Update for 27 May...

A few weeks ago I said that I had about 100 Spanish DVD movies that have just been piling up and it's time to start whittling down and I just chose some random movies for today's update. The only movie featured below that I've watched is Fausto 5.0, a 2001 movie that is a wild modern twist on the Faust story. I'd seen it before when it aired back in the day on SBS and I thought I might've capped it but I couldn't find any evidence of it. Ah well, it's done now with a couple of decent scenes featuring Irene Montalà and Raquel González.

Update for 25 May...

Continuing the 90s weekend with a couple more movies. Remember seeing The Passion Of Darkly Noon back in the day, a very odd movie about a young man (Brendan Fraser) who survived a cult mass killing and is nursed back to health by a woman (Ashley Judd) who is pining for her indisposed mute boyfriend (Viggo Mortensen). The young man develops feelings for the carefree woman, weird new feelings that he comes to believe are wrong thanks to his heavy religious upbringing and he unravels with increasingly violent behaviour. I have a strange fascination with the movie, it was the first time I ever saw Ashley Judd (maybe it was Heat, I can't remember exactly) and Brendan Fraser went from buffoonish roles in Encino Man and Airheads to this completely religious nutjob wearing a barbed wire vest getting real horny for Ashley Judd. Plus there's plenty of weirdness in this movie from director Philip Ridley not unlike his previous movie The Reflecting Skin (also with Viggo), who has strangely only directed one movie since (the 2009 not weird revenge thriller Heartless).

All-American Murder is a silly little B-grade murder-mystery that strangely has Christopher Walken playing a cop in his own oddball way, introduced by bringing a hostage taker's wife to a hostage situation and then preceding to tell him that he fucked her. He seems wildly out-of-place in this movie but he's also the best thing about it. The mystery is bizarre but the unveiling of the killer makes absolutely no sense unless these cops are the dumbest cops ever. There is some brief nudity and full on sex scenes featuring Josie Bissett, who plays the murdered good girl who turns out to be very, very bad and apart from that, this movie is a total miss, that is actually directed by Potsie from Happy Days.

Update for 24 May...

90s weekend comes around again. Thought I hadn't seen Heaven's Prisoners but it didn't take long to realise that I had, pretty much from the fake looking plane crash in the beginning. It's an alright movie where a former cop is dragged back into his old life thanks to saving a little girl in the plane crash and he's going to have to get deep down and dirty when his wife is slaughtered. Alec Baldwin is always good in these type of roles but the movie is probably best known in these parts for the brief nude scene from Teri Hatcher which caused an incredible stir back in the day, even in normal society. Amazing to remember how big Hatcher was in the 90s, particularly on the Internet. But having said that, this movie is mostly forgotten now, hell I didn't remember even watching it and apart from Baldwin, there's no real impact from anyone else including Hatcher who doesn't turn up until the 40 minute mark, introduced by that scene on the balcony, and then comes in and out of the movie without making much of an impact. Ah well...

Update for 18 May...

Another look at the 90s DVD collection and Two Deaths is a wild dank movie where Michael Gambon basically replays his character from The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, a nasty bastard who 'owns' a housekeeper and tells the story of how he got her to his friends who are shocked by his behaviour. I don't know why they are shocked now considering he seems to have slept with his guest's wives and they still turn up to dinner for another dose of his shit. Directed by Nicolas Roeg, no stranger to the weird and ugly, Two Deaths is definitely a movie from a director on the wain. The movie looks very cheap at times, hiring Romanian actors to play the younger characters and then dubbing with the older character's voice. Very odd movie.

No nudity from Caroleen Feeney in Cadillac Ranch but she did do a nude scene in Bad Manners. Also no nudity from Renée Humphrey but she has a nude scene in The Sex Monster, which I capped recently.

Update for 17 May...

90s weekend update once again and I capped the sequel to Bounty Hunters a couple of years back and I finally gotten around to capping the original. Pretty much the same movie with similar nudity in both movies. Pale Blood is an arty vampire detective thriller where an investigator who's secretly a vampire is invited to Los Angeles to help find a vampiric serial killer. While the movie isn't necessarily about killings as it's pretty obvious who the killer is early on, it is more about how he captures the killer with the psychic help of his local handler and about a video artist who is desperate to find a vampire so that he can get famous. Surprisingly good movie more about mood than procedure which suggests that it was probably made by music video directors and Wings Hauser is always worth a look.

Update for 16 May...

More new movies including another movie made in South Africa, the completely necessary 25 years later sequel Bulletproof 2. You have to wonder why it took so long to make this movie and inexplicably set it in South Africa but it happened and it's available to watch. I don't remember much from the Sandler/Wayans original but I remember Sandler singing 'I Will Always Love You', a plane crashing where they both survive while Wayans jokes about to sitting on the black box and a lot of gay panic jokes. Well, they kept the gay panic jokes for some reason and not much else. And wouldn't you know it, it's another Universal direct-to-streaming sequel, the masters of the cheap cash-in in name only sequels. A quick note about the unknown people in the videos for Bulletproof 2, the credits are both very detailed but also very vague in details. For some reason, the girl in underwear isn't credited as far as I can tell but the guy that plays her boyfriend is despite having similar screen time. There is a credit for Facetime Girl who is played by Jenna Saras but there's no Facetime scene in the movie and I'm not convinced that the underwear girl is Jenna as she is blonde but could be wearing a wig. She also looks like one of the naked girls in the party scenes, so I don't know...

Update for 11 May...

Another look at the 90s DVD collection. Dream With The Fishes is a typical 90s indie black comedy where David Arquette plays a character who wants to kill himself and he is stopped but also encouraged by his neighbour, who is actually dying. So they go on a journey together and become friends before the inevitable happens. Lots of wacky scenes like nude bowling so it's exactly like every 90s indie comedy. Elephant Juice feels like an episode of the 90s British drama This Life and wouldn't you know it, it's written by one of the creators and even has Daniela Nardini from the show. Has a pretty wild cast for a British movie: Emmanuelle Béart, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Mark Strong before he became a hard man, Daniel Lapaine etc. but the movie is barely memorable mainly focusing on two uninteresting male characters while Emmanuelle goes missing for a while before the focus come on her.

Update for 10 May...

90s weekend update with a couple of Michael Winterbottom movies, I Want You and With Or Without You. Winterbottom really churns out the movies with these two movies released within a year of one another, hell, he even made Wonderland in between these movies (now there's a movie that's tough to track down, barely released in Australia and I only saw it on late night TV. Never released on DVD locally and forget HD). I think I've seen I Want You 3 or 4 times, it's a pretty solid movie about obsessive love and how people seem to gravitate towards Rachel's character. Also a fair bit of sex and nudity throughout. Never seen With Or Without You before, don't think it got a local release, at least I don't remember it being which would make it one of the few Winterbottom movies that didn't. It's a pretty simple story about a couple trying for a child and while struggling to do so then an old flame turns up trying to win the woman back. It's OK, very much in the Winterbottom style but it's hardly essential and that's maybe why it didn't get released here in Australia. I waiver on Winterbottom films but I'm mostly positive on them. 24 Hour Party People is an all-timer but 9 Songs is absolute dog shit, boring even at 64 minutes and a shitload of real sex scenes. His latest movie, Greed, which I capped only a few days ago and sadly it's a disappointing rehash of 24 Hour Party People and even The Look Of Love but strangely it's not based on a real person like those other two movies and feels like a bad satire of his own work with Steve Coogan just playing his stock Winterbottom character. Very weird miss...

Update for 3 May...

That time of week again with another 90s update. Raven is B-grade all the way but starring Burt Reynolds, a genuine star of his time, this feels just that extra bit terrible and just one year out from being great in Boogie Nights. I capped The Maddening starring Burt recently and that was made the same year and was not very good either but this feels a level below that as it's basically a B-action movie with softcore sex. But, I will say Burt is certainly making the most of it, playing the good guy gone bad, chomping cigars and delivering one liners after slaughtering some chump. At least he makes the movie somewhat watchable, the block of wood lead is a dead loss and Krista Allen is great to look at but her role is so badly written that the final act twist her character has should never happen and is only predicated by a throwaway slur from Burt. Also strangely this movie has the principal from Billy Madison who also turned up in The Maddening and Burt slaughters him in both movies. Must know Burt or something...

Crooked Hearts is depressing as hell, there's just more family drama by-the-minute until they finally kill someone off. Cold Dog Soup is barely a 90s movie and feels exactly like one of those 80s movies where there's barely a plot and wacky things keep happening to the lead character against their will until they resolve some issue. Randy Quaid plays the character you'd expect him to play but feels strangely subdued here and I only know Christine Harnos from Cool And The Crazy, now there's a movie that needs to be dug up for capping, perfect for the 90s DVD collection.

I capped Uninvited Guest on the old site and it all came flooding back when I watched again, remembering how terrible it was. The plot is so ridiculous and based on the flimsiest twist I've ever seen, it's just not plausible in the slightest. Basically a home invasion thriller without the home invasion and a thriller were you have to suspend a helluva lot of belief to make any sense, Uninvited Guest asks a lot to make its premise work and fails at every turn. If it stuck with being a straight home invasion thriller it would've been better, probably not by much but it would've been better than this.
