Update for 26 February...

A couple of new movies.

Judy & Punch is a black comedy/revenge movie where Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) are struggling puppeteers still hoping to make it big in the arse end of nowhere town of Seaside, which is nowhere near any sea. Punch thinks he can still impress scouts but the truth is Judy is the star of the show and Punch is struggling with alcohol and his temper. Judy thinks that their act is too violent towards her character and suggests some changes but Punch is having none of it, convinced they will be scouted with their current act. Seaside has been taken over by puritans lead by Mr. Frankly (Tom Budge), who are far more interested in punitive measures for keeping people in line like stoning people and making a sport of it by organising Stoning Day, where the locals can join in. One day, Judy entrusts Punch with looking after their baby but Punch becomes distracted when his hired help, Scaramouche (Terry Norris), breaks out the alcohol. He saves the baby from entering the oven but after a tussle with their dog, Punch accidentally throws their baby out of the second storey window, killing it. When Judy comes home, he brushes it off and when she yells at him for his nonchalant attitude to their baby's death, he beats Judy to death. The next day, Punch goes to town to tell the new constable (Benedict Hardie) that Judy and their baby had gone missing and when the police check their home, they find a burnt baby shoe and Punch accuses Scaramouche and the maid (Brenda Palmer) of cooking and eating them. That's enough for the police to send them to be hung. Meanwhile, a group of children who live in a hidden community of mostly women come across Judy and discover that she is actually alive and the community nurse her back to health. Punch goes on with his life, trying to continue his act with local prostitute Polly (Lucy Velik formerly Lucy Honigman) when she tells him that two men who look like scouts had entered town, but she's terrible at puppeteering. Judy has one thing on her mind, revenge and with the help of the hidden community, she will ruin Punch's life.

I'm struggling to work out what this movie wants to be. It seems to want to be a black comedy with a twist on the Punch and Judy puppet show but when Judy is beaten to 'death', the movie stops being a black comedy with that ugly scene. After that there isn't a lot of comedy and the movie turns into a stock-standard revenge thriller which is a disappointing turn of events. There was potential in Judy being the driving force behind the Punch and Judy puppet show, particularly if they could become successful because of her but that plot is abandoned at the end of the first act. Even the baby death scene is done with humour but what happens for the next 5 minutes after this stops the movie dead and sends it down a boring, well-worn path and turns Judy into a one-dimensional vengeful character. Black comedies can work with nasty death scenes if humour is the point but nasty death scenes in a black comedy always pose a problem because you are expecting to laugh/be amused but as in Judy & Punch's case, you end up with a disturbing scene of spousal abuse that could never be funny. The movie never recovers from this and that is very disappointing.

A quick synopsis of The Night Clerk, a thriller where an autistic man Bart (Tye Sheridan) works at the night desk at a hotel and has set up a series of cameras in a room, for voyeuristic means but not for the usual devious reasons. One day, he captures a murder in progress and drives to the hotel to attempt to stop it but doesn't get there in time. He lies to the detective (John Leguizamo) about why he was there and it isn't long before he becomes a suspect which worries his mother (Helen Hunt). His employer moves him to a quieter hotel and he comes across a young woman, Andrea (Ana de Armas), who takes an interest in him and he sets up cameras in her room to watch her. He finds out that she is having an affair with a married man who turns out the man who committed the murder at the other hotel and it looks like she is playing him to help her lover. How is Bart going to get out of this? Not a bad little thriller, nothing too great but keeps it pretty simple and you never quite know how much Ana de Armas's character is playing the autistic man and how much of her interest is genuine.

Update for 24 February...

What the hell, let's continue the 90s weekend. And I found another contender for the most dated 90s movie and it's The Sex Monster. A terrible comedy that smacks of gay panic and incredibly fragile masculinity about a dork who convinces his wife (Mariel Hemingway) to have a threesome with her co-worker (Renée Humphrey) which goes very well, in fact too well because his wife decides that she's massively horny for women. Now he thinks that she's going to fuck every woman his wife comes across including his sister and he starts to lose his mind. Not an ounce of believability in the plot and you'd think this movie was poking fun at the husband in a 'be careful what you wish for' way but time and time again this movie keeps going against that and would rather be a rubbish bedroom farce that punishes the wife as well as the husband. Completely out-of-touch movie. Best you can say is at least Renée Humphrey briefly shows her breasts and there a fair bit of lesbian kissing. Can't save the rest of the movie though.

Update for 22 February...

90s weekend upon us once again. Today, quite a bit from the 1991 HBO biopic, The Josephine Baker Story, about a dancer who became a singer and was very famous in Europe, particularly France but received little love in her home country of America for obvious reasons. Very lengthy at just over 135 minutes and quite exhaustive (in a good way) look at her ups and downs. Lynn Whitfield is excellent as Josephine Baker and has a lot of work to do as she's on the screen the entire time and includes a bit of aging make-up for the last half-an-hour or so when Josephine runs into money problems thanks to a persistent need to help orphaned children. Also quite a bit of nudity throughout, as you'll see below.

Another update featuring South African movies and one American movie starring a South African actress. I've seen Stephanie Schildknecht before in One Last Look and she stars in Accident, a South African movie made for the American market, so it's American accents everyone. Takes a ludicrous turn about halfway through mainly to get to 90 minutes because you can't spend that long trapped in a car without becoming boring. Not much in Shark Killer, a silly Canadian shark thriller that at least is set in Cape Town but mostly boring. Don't Sleep is an American thriller starring South African actress Charlbi Kriek, who I capped previously from the Spud trilogy and it looks like she's been getting work in America recently.

Update for 18 February...

I was going to say that I haven't capped any new movies since the new year but I've actually capped more than few, mostly new Australian movies. Don't know why I thought this, anyway...

Queen & Slim is a drama mixed with road movie where lawyer Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) goes on a Tinder date with Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) and after a pedestrian meal, they head off home. After a minor incident in the car, a police officer following them pulls them over, but things escalate quickly due to the an overzealous police officer and results in Queen being shot in the leg and in a scuffle, Slim shoots dead the officer. They go on the run but are completely unprepared, running only on adrenalin, so much so that they run out petrol. A man (Benito Martinez) pulls over to help get them to the next petrol station but he turns out to be a local sheriff, so they lock him in their boot and take his car and drive to Queen's uncle's (Bokeem Woodbine) house in New Orleans. Her uncle, a pimp, reluctantly helps her but they have to leave quickly when the police start sniffing around. He sets it up for Queen and Slim to go to Florida and meet up with a husband and wife (Flea and Chloë Sevigny) he knows who will get them to Cuba. Along the way, they try to bond and enjoy the ride although their car breaks down and they spend an afternoon with the mechanic's son Junior (Jahi Di'Allo Winston), which inspires him to murder a cop at the protest for Queen and Slim the following day. After getting to Florida, the police close in but a plane is ready to go. Can they get away or will the police hunt them down? Queen & Slim starts off as an incendiary story based on recent incidents but becomes less interested in the politics the longer it goes and probably to its detriment. Mainly because it turns into just another running from the law movie and ends up being riddled with contrivances and implausibilities so that the movie reaches it's logical conclusion. There is some fiery stuff throughout like the suggestion the cop had already killed a black person in a previous incident and Junior murdering a black cop but even that is underexplored to focus on Queen and Slim. Sadly, I don't think this movie will take its place amongst the great politically charged movies which is a shame as the opening 30 minutes sets up the potential to be memorable.

Update for 14 February...

Another redux. Having another look at Van Wilder 2 over a decade later, it feels like a relic and a fairly piss poor cash-in to the original. Kal Penn's Taj is an out and out sleazebag, calling women whores constantly and basically treating women as his playthings. My memory of the original is that his character was lacking confidence and gained it over time but I don't remember him becoming the sleazebag of this movie. The cheap nature of this movie comes through when this Britain set movie is actually shot in Romania and there's a few examples of local actors just blatantly dubbed by a British actor and it's obvious when this happens. There's occasional laughs but all the character of the original is removed and replaced with the energy of an 80s teen sex comedy, 20 years too late. It's Lauren Cohan's second movie, British accent and all and I have no idea whether she's British or American, probably both although I always thought she was British for some reason. And that nude scene is one of the weirdest nude scenes ever, it looks like there's been digital manipulation but also it looks perfectly fine if you take out the green blur that populates the scene. There's also a later shot where there's clearly a very rough patch on her breast. No idea and HD doesn't settle it. Holly Davidson basically gave up acting after this movie, interesting...

Amazingly, there's a 3rd Van Wilder, that I've never seen and has none of the original in it. Wasn't Kal Penn working in the White House when they made it? Couldn't lure him back...

Oh, of course it's a prequel.

Baffled as to why you would hire a no name like Isa Jank for your sleazy B-movie Night Angel and then have to get a body double for the nude scenes as she barely speaks a word for the entire movie. Just get the double to act out the role, nobody cares...

Update for 7 February...

Not more Australian movies! A couple of HD reduxes, it is my third go at both movies and now that they are in HD hopefully the last.

The Jammed is a 2007 sex trafficking thriller that is told from two perspectives. Crystal (Emma Lung) is being questioned by immigration with the threat of detention and deportation. Three weeks earlier, Ashley (Veronica Sywak), who works for an insurance company, is set up by her friend to pick up a male friend from the airport, who brings along Sunee (Amanda Ma), who he met on the plane and is looking for her daughter Li Rong and her persistant wears down Ashley, who reluctantly helps. Sunee says that Li Rong is in prostitution and asks Ashley to make missing signs giving out Ashley's number, which she is not happy with. She gets in touch with her ex Tom (Todd MacDonald), who's not happy with her as she walked out on their relationship without telling him and as an ex-postman, he is able to narrow down where Li Rong or someone else sent the letter she sent to her mother from. Meanwhile, Crystal tells her story of how she came to Australia thinking she was working as a tabletop dancer, but is forced, including by being repeatedly raped by her handler Dyce (Masa Yamaguchi) into prostitution and joins two other girls, Russian woman Vanya (Saskia Burmeister) and Rubi (Sun Park), who is actually Li Rong. Rubi is struggling and one day overdoses on drugs and is dumped at the hospital and in the ensuing mayhem, Vanya finds one of the missing signs with Rubi on it and escapes and manages to make a call to Ashley about Rubi's whereabouts before being found out by her handlers. Ashley finds out who owns the address Vanya tells her and makes herself known to the owner's wife (Alison Whyte) but this causes the sex traffickers to get in contact with Ashley and ask her to pay Rubi's debt and make threats against her and Sunee. Ashley is unperturbed and with a reluctant Tom decides to stake out the illegal brother and follow the girls when they are driven to where they are staying. When the handler stops to get dinner, Ashley strikes and manages to free Crystal and Rubi but Vanya is left behind. Sunee is reunited with Li Rong/Rubi but it does not go well as it turns out that Li Rong was sold into prostitution by her parents to settle their debts. The next morning, Li Rong jumps out the window of the motel they were staying at and kills herself leaving Crystal distraught and Sunee devastated. Ashley makes one last bold attempt to free Vanya by going to the illegal brother and in the mayhem, Vanya steals a whole lot of money and then stabs one of the handlers before escaping. They confront the owners of the brothel at their art gallery opening and then Vanya runs off but not before giving half the money she took to Ashley to give to Crystal. Crystal decides not to become a witness and is sent to detention.

Very good thriller that doesn't take a backward step about the issues surrounding sex trafficking and doesn't necessarily end with a happy ending despite the women being freed from their captors. All the main cast are all very well defined characters and all actresses are very good, particularly Lung and Sywak, both fairly unheralded on the Australian scene despite both being rightfully nominated by Best Actress at the local film awards and probably unlucky one of them didn't win. The plot is tight and thrilling although the sex traffickers are rather incompetent which makes the women's escape a bit easier than probably would be. The movie also doesn't skimp on the horror of sex trafficking and when it's revealed about how Li Rong got introduced into prostitution, it is very devastating as Rubi is basically caught in a horrible situation where she sees death as the only solution. The Jammed is a well made movie about an important subject and should get a more love than it has had.

Interestingly, the four actresses featured in The Jammed barely act any more. Emma Lung has only done an episode of Rake since Wonderland. Veronica Sywak seems to have quit acting although she's appeared in The Jammed director's subsequent movies 10Terrorists and Out Of The Shadows. Burmeister hadn't done anything since 2012 until she turned up in a small role as a mother in last year's Little Monsters and Sun Park barely did anything after being in kid's group Hi-5 but has recently returned to acting and seems to be getting regular roles, I remember her turning up for few episode of Wentworth. Shame really, particularly Lung who I'm a big fan of, but seems to have taken time away to be a mother.

More new Australian movies.

Standing Up For Sunny is a romantic comedy where Travis (RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad), who has cerebral palsy and works a paltry job at the university doing groundskeeping when he gets mocked by some of the students so he gets in his car and drives at them. The dean (Radha Mitchell) tells him to get help for his anger but he steams off home and finds a blind man, Gordo (Italia Hunt) in his house, now living there because Travis can't afford the place by himself. Travis is now more angry than he was so he goes to the local pub with Gordo in tow where he sees Sunny (Philippa Northeast) on stage doing stand-up comedy. When Sunny is heckled by some arsehole, Travis comes to her aid with a withering attack leaving her boss/lover/mentor Mikey (Sam Reid) is impressed with his attack and hires Travis to help keep Sunny focused for when she does get heckled or off track and to work at the bar with Sunny and her sister Felicity (Ella Scott Lynch). Mikey is priming Sunny to join him on his morning radio show but Sunny is interested in being a mechanic as she is an apprentice for Mario (Sal Sharah) and she introduces him to Travis and his 30 year-old shitheap of a car. Sunny opens up to Travis about her problems including being bulimic. At a performance with talent scouts for radio watching, Sunny goes off Mikey's script and uses her personal issues to riff off and it ends up going better than expected and she gets a chance to be on radio with Mikey. Sunny spends more time with Travis and they end up falling for one another, much to the chagrin of Felicity who wants her to be Mikey's lover/protege. At an unsigned stand-up comedy night, Sunny gets sick and Travis improvises quickly and takes her spot wearing a bag on his head to calm himself and ends up being pretty funny and goes through to the next round. Outside, Travis is beaten up by the earlier heckler and his friends and Sunny cleans him up and they begin a relationship. Mario dies from heart issues and Travis spies Sunny cuddling up to Mikey and Travis isn't happy about this and they split up. At the comedy showdown judged by Barry Humphries, Travis loses it at Mikey and ends up having a seizure with Sunny helping him out but she still isn't convinced she should be with him. Barry Humphries gives Travis a wildcard entry to the comedy show and he uses it to profess his love for Sunny in his own odd way.

Second movie directed by Steve Vidler, 20-odd years after the incendiary Blackrock and this movie is very different. OK movie where it's pretty obvious how everything is going to turn out but the central couple are charming enough to make it watchable. There are issues such as the character of Gordo who seems to be forced onto Travis and the audience as a wacky side-kick when he's not really necessary and only turns up when Travis is very angry, so he ends up copping a whole lot of abuse from Travis which feels very odd. No idea what the point of Radha Mitchell's character is as she's barely in it and at first she seems like his boss but later exchanges make it look like she's his sister or guardian but it's never made clear. But the movie hinges on the central relationship and that's where the movie is at its best. Mitte has manic energy which he channels well and Northeast is always well, sunny and upbeat despite her character's issues and they both work well together.

Definitely a bit of a surprise to see some very brief nudity from Philippa Northeast in the movie, definitely wasn't expecting it as I thought it was just a nice romantic comedy with nothing really sexual but here we are and probably why I took a few weeks to get around to watching it. Interestingly, there's a body double credited for her on IMDB but it certainly looks like Philippa in that scene. Hmmm...

Friends, Foes & Fireworks is a drama set in St. Kilda in Melbourne on New Year's Eve where Fiona (Lara Deam) decides to invite all her friends to spend the night together but it's going to be a bumpy night. Newly successful actress Lucinda (Whitney Duff) brings her new British boyfriend Taron (Daniel Hill) and new breasts much to the annoyance of Summer (Asleen Mauthoor) who has a major crush on her but has never told Lucinda her feelings. Zoe (Jess Riley) is a young actress ready to impress but she's terrible but Taron thinks she's fine and once known actress now acting coach Sofia (Genya Mik) bites her tongue. The group leave Fiona's apartment and go to the park where Fiona admits to seeing her ex-boyfriend at the supermarket and he was happy which made her unexpectedly happy. Summer accidentally lets out that Sofia is pregnant but she is probably going to have an abortion. When the clock strikes midnight, Summer kisses Lucinda and freaks her out as Lucinda is not interested in women. Sofia finally tells Zoe what she thought about her monologue and Zoe goes off in a huff. Taron goes after Zoe and they kiss. Sofia tells Fiona who the father of her child is, Fiona's ex, and she is fine with it. Summer finally catches up with Lucinda and they find common ground. Fairly simple drama, a bit of a soap opera and at 75 minutes, there isn't enough time to be boring. The characters are fairly well drawn with enough information given about each character to give them some rounding even with most of the characters being actresses in different part of careers. Nothing much to the movie but an OK watch.

Update for 5 February...

Three new Australian movies.

Slam is a drama about immigrant Ricky (Adam Bakri), who has embraced his new Australian life, marrying local girl Sally (Rebecca Breeds) with one child and another on the way and they have just opened a cafe. When Ricky's sister Ameena (Danielle Horvat). a vocal political figure, doesn't come home after doing some slam poetry, their mother (Darina Al Joundi) calls him worried and wanting him to help find her. They call the police and their case is taken by Joanne (Rachael Blake), who has just returned to the job after the death of her son and she is barely holding it together. She is also trying to avoid her ex (Damian Hill) who wants to get back with her but he reminds her of their dead son. Meanwhile, an Australian fighter pilot has been shot down in Syria and held hostage by ISIS who are threatening to decapitate him. There is very little evidence as to what may of happened and her best friend (Abbey Aziz) hasn't spoken to her for 3 weeks but Ameena did call her the night of her disappearance but she didn't pick up. But there is the lingering issue that she travelled to Syria to be an ISIS bride and this thread is picked up by the media right about the same time that the fighter pilot is murdered by ISIS. Ricky and his family's lives go into turmoil, hounded by the media and the police/intelligence agencies are convinced that Ameena's in Syria and Ricky has to come to terms with this and how the country he loves has now turned on him. OK drama that actually feels a few years dated considering what's happened recently in Syria but also feels needlessly inflammatory to get maximum drama. And there's a strange focus on the character of Joanne who is only there to increase the main drama and her story is very coincidental to the main plot and when it's revealed what actually happened to her son, it all becomes too much that her circumstances just happen to mirror what is happening. And what happens to Ameena is badly handled, little is given away and it's just assumed that she went to join ISIS the whole time with only 'doctored' evidence revealed. When what actually happened is revealed, it all feels like an afterthought and the result would be a national disgrace. What does work is when the movie focuses on Ricky and his embracing of Australian ideals which are shaken up by his sister's disappearance. This works well and is where most of the tension in the movie happens. If only there wasn't so much contrived plot occurring around the main plot, Slam might've been a much better movie than it is.

The Marshes is a horror thriller where three research biologists Pria (Dafna Kronental), Ben (Mathew Cooper) and their junior assistant Will (Sam Delich) go out camping to the marshlands to pick up samples for the weekend. On their way to their destination, they run into a hunter (Zac Drayson) who is erronously unhappy with what the scientists are doing with the hunter and his wife making threatening motions towards them. Ben tells a story of how the swagman from the song Waltzing Matilda actually lived in the area, but not much is thought of it. Tensions between the three begin early and boil over when Pria sleeps with Will and they decide to make one last sweep for samples before leaving. Pria, who has been having weird and frightening dreams, feels like she is been followed and begins to hear someone whistling Waltzing Matilda. Pria catches up to the other two and they go to leave the marshlands but then the hunter runs towards them completely naked and frightened by something. He is then dragged back into the marshland and found hanging from a tree. The biologists try to get out of the marshlands but seem to be going in circles, eventually coming across the hunter's wife who is also taken by the Swagman (Eddie Baroo). Can the biologists escape the Swagman? Silly horror movie that may have worked better if the premise was set up better than it is. The story about Waltzing Matilda is just tossed off as a quaint fact and it isn't until later on that it's made clear that the coldblooded killer is actually the legend of the Swagman from Waltzing Matilda and it makes little sense as to why this happening. The killer is not a bad concept but he isn't given much to do except whistling Waltzing Matilda, which is pretty creepy, and occasionally slaughering someone off screen. It's also pretty obvious who is going to be the last one left but then it does the stupid fake out ending. There are some small signs that the movie could've been good but blows it mostly by not making it's killer concept clear until the killings start happening.

Strange Colours is a drama where city girl Milena (Kate Cheel) visits her sick father Max (Daniel P. Jones), who lives in a remote opal mining town and has been estranged from. Max is in hospital and gets his local friends including Frank (Justin Courtin) to help her feel welcome but this is a lonely place and there's not much to do. Occasionally, there's an inkling that someone is trying to make claims on Max's plot. After Max checks himself out hospital, he tries to make amends with Milena and offers her a place to stay but Milena is restless and decides to leave and Max goes off in a huff but then goes missing. Very little happens in this movie with long periods of not much in between Milena conversing with her dad and the locals. Having said that, the movie keeps interest with decent characters and Milena and Max are worlds apart from one another but manage to make a fair bit from their interactions. But it's hard to give a lengthy response to a movie where nothing much happens and you have to have a lot of patience to get through.

Never heard of Strange Colours until it aired on SBS World Movies last week and it's the first movie I've capped off of that channel. It's pretty much the only channel I watch on TV nowadays and I've caught up on plenty of movies I hadn't gotten around to watching. And they've shown a number of new releases too. Nothing much else on the other channels, so glad there's something to finally watch.

Update for 3 February...

More for the 90s weekend, an erotic thriller and a docudrama about a street prostitute.

Didn't expect much from Snapdragon and wasn't let down, it's typical B-grade erotic thriller with a boring, done to death plot, a wildly miscast Steven Bauer as a psychiatrist (what was it with psychiatrists fucking their patients in 90s movies?) and a twist so predictable that if you don't pick it in the opening scene, you'll probably enjoy the movie. The twist also leads to the bizarre ending of Chelsea Field's character just shooting the first person she sees, who knows if it is the right one (spoiler, it isn't). Utterly forgettable and really only exists to get Pamela Anderson naked and on that scale it succeeds.

Remember seeing Whore on TV back in the day but didn't really remember it being that graphic but it got an NC-17 rating and I looked it up and it turns out it's because of the pretty obscene dialogue that is uttered throughout the movie, not really for the fairly moderate amount of sex in the movie. Turns out there's an Unrated version of the movie but again it's mostly more dialogue and one clothed sex scene goes quite a bit longer and considering the scene is one where she's roughly handled, another extra minute on that scene isn't necessary and feels far too long. Theresa Russell spends most of the movie in a bra and I capped pretty much everything with the video topping out at 14 minutes, so I cut it into two videos to make it slightly more manageable.

Update for 2 February...

90s weekend once again.

Had never seen This World, Then The Fireworks, based on a Jim Thompson story but I had enjoyed other movies made from stories like The Getaway (both versions), After Dark, My Sweet and The Grifters and I wasn't disappointed. The movie is positively filthy, right from the first minute and never lets up, just full of scenes of nastiness and ugliness all the way through and more than a hint of incest between the Billy Zane and Gina Gershon characters. Rue McClanahan looks like she's decomposing, the bodies pile up in increasingly revolting ways and none of the characters are likeable in any possible way. So, I enjoyed this movie a lot...
