Update for 30 October...

Yesterday I released two Australian Classics, one starring Toni Collette and another starring Rachel Griffiths. I was going to also cap Muriel's Wedding starring the both of them but I couldn't find the copy of it that I had. Anyway, I got a hold of one and finally capped it.

Anyway, this update features two of the most popular Australian movies of all time, both released in 1994, both star Bill Hunter (who's pretty great in both in completely different roles) and both well regarded particularly in Australia. Also both have musicals based on the movie. I don't know what the Muriel's Wedding one is like but considering the movie is non-stop ABBA songs I'm guessing it's like Mamma Mia. And if you haven't got enough ABBA, there's even some in Priscilla, a movie much more conducive to the musical format.

Update for 29 October...

A couple of 90s Australian movies for today's update. Some quick synopses:

Me Myself I is a 1999 'Sliding Doors' drama where successful writer Pamela (Rachel Griffiths) who is in her 30s but has has no success with finding a man to love. The one man she did like Robert (David Roberts) has moved on and has a family of his own which she seems envious of. She meets P.E. teacher Ben (Sandy Winton) and seems to have a spark with him. But before she can go on a date with him, Pamela has an accident and meets her doppelgänger who married Robert and when she wakes, she is now married to Robert with three kids (oldest daughter played by Yael Stone). At first, Pamela is lost as to how to be a mother but when Robert arrives back from his trip, she tries to revive their sexual relationship which seems to be waning but comes back to life. Then Pamela meets Ben in this world, now a sports writer and she begins an affair with him and starts to wain on Robert. Robert attempts to reaffirm his love for her, Pamela has a choice to make: stay with Robert or go back to her old life and improve herself. 'Sliding Doors' plots were all the rage in the late 90s/early 2000s and Australia wasn't going to be left out. A fairly saucy drama where Pamela brings some of her bad habits from her life and brings them to her alternate life while learning a few things about herself. Otherwise the plot is fairly standard and is very similar to The Family Man (which actually came out a year later), family life is better than the single life and must be obtained no matter what. Strangely, the imagined Pamela is sleeping around on Robert, a plot development that goes nowhere and Robert never finds out about. Plus the movie doesn't even try with the changeover, just some tossed off scene where both Pamela's meet one another, no reason given as to why or how they meet or even change back. A pretty modest effort.

Diana & Me is a 1997 romantic comedy where Diana Spencer (Toni Collette) wins a trip to London with Woman's Day magazine. She takes her boyfriend Mark (Malcolm Kennard) and her main goal is that she wants to see her namesake Princess Diana. At a party, she gets her chance but in a mix-up, she ends up arrested with a paparazzo Rob (Dominic West). Diana and Rob bicker their way around as they both chase after Princess Diana to their own ends to the point where they inexplicably fall for one another. Oh boy, this one is bad. A tepid romantic comedy with no conviction, a silly plot that lumbers to it's predictable ending but not before a truly baffling scene where Diana, Rob and Mark get into a car chase after Princess Diana. And lets not forget the obvious reshoots which are badly tacked on. The best thing that happened to this movie was Diana dying before it was released because otherwise it would've been completely ignored. It's still ignored but at least it's now just the little bit tasteless so there's one reason to watch it. Otherwise it's a boring movie.

Both movies are capped off VHS rips although the copy of Me Myself I is actually pretty good, better than the usual VHS rips. Not so the copy of Diana & Me which is passable but it could be better. Doubt it will though as that movie is long forgotten and probably lost since it bombed incredbily badly and more than a little tasteless. I know Me Myself I made it DVD in some places, not in Australia, so I may upgrade it at some stage. Plus the movie has French backing so maybe it'll get a better release that way.

Still in the 90s with one more Helena Bergström/Colin Nutley movie Under Solen (Under The Sun), which I do remember watching as I remember it being on SBS fairly regularly in the early 2000s. Also in today's update is another Italian horror movie, this one a vehicle for Italian singer Stefania Stella and well it kinda sucks not helped by the terrible dubbing of a number of characters or a surprising number of cameos from horror legends like Donald Pleasance, Angus Scrimm and Linnea Quigley.

Update for 25 October...

90s update heads to Sweden with a couple of movies starring Helena Bergström and directed by her husband Colin Nutley. Their movies would turn up on SBS all the time throughout the 90s and 2000s and I probably watched all of them but don't really remember them. Looking at them now, some things seem familiar but it's mostly been memory-holed. Always surprised Bergström didn't really cross over to English language films as a number of her movies got cinema releases all over the world (the last one was probably The Queen of Sheba's Pearls). Apart from QoSP, the only other English language movie I can think of is Still Crazy.

Update for 23 October...

A new New Zealand movie and a new short film.

Millie Lies Low is a drama where Millie (Ana Scotney) is going to New York to start an architectural scholarship leaving behind her boyfriend Henry (Chris Alosio) who she has broken up with, hopefully for only her time in New York. Then she has a panic attack before the plane leaves and she gets off the plane and discovers that she needs $2,000 to pay for another flight which she doesn't have. Plus she doesn't want anyone to know what happened so she decides to fake that she's in New York as she hides out around town. She also comes across her lecturer Scott (Sam Cotton) and attempts a clumsy affair with him. At some stage all of Millie's lies are going to unravel and she can't hide forever then her mother (Rachel House) finds her. Then Henry calls her and says he's coming to visit her in New York. And she starts messing with her best friend Carolyn (Jillian Nguyen) who it's looking increasingly like she should've got the scholarship as Millie is looking more and more like a fraud. How is she going to get out of this mess? Alright movie where Millie's problems just escalate with everything she does. Not a lot happens and most of what does is in the area of cringe humour as Millie seems to be a habitual copier and overexaggerater so her faking being New York feels like something Millie would totally do, just keeping up the lies until the people who question her move on. How her boyfriend and best friend find out about Millie is also well done. Scotney does a good job at portraying a mess of a character and she has some good support. Hard to recommend as nothing much happens but it's a good movie nonetheless.

Also below is a new short film Hot Mother about and mother and daughter (Alison Bruce and Erana James) who's relationship is a bit tense and is about to boil over when they get stuck in a sauna.

Update for 22 October...

A grab bag of Australian movies today including one from VHS. Some quick synopses:

Moonlight & Magic is a 2007 comedy drama where two misfits Rocky (Tim Burns) and Frank (Maxine Klibingaitis) (aka Moonlight & Magic) go on a crime spree around Belgrave doing everything from robbing cafes and op shops, stealing food, throwing eggs and attempting to pinch the nipples of women with tongs amongst many other things (one scene with a woman who had a mastectomy is absolutely baffling). They meet a bunch of characters along the way, most of them naked while an Indigineous man, also naked, looks over them. Their victims also talk incessantly about them. That's pretty much it. Silly movie, typical Timothy Spanos stuff (Prisoner Queen, Boronia Boys, Sizzler '77, Throbin '84) but set down the road from his usual movies in Boronia. Plenty of attempts at campy humour definitely influenced by John Waters but nowhere near as entertaining as Waters' movies. Wanders all over the place and never all that coherent and forget the plot, it barely has one. Spanos's movies are definitely an acquired taste and I don't mind some of them but not this one. It's a rambling mess...

Lucky Break aka Paperback Romance is a 1994 long forgotten romantic comedy where Sophie (Gia Carides) is a wannabe romance novel writer and when Eddie (Anthony LaPaglia) hears her reciting one of her stories, he instantly falls for her. He asks Sophie out but she is reluctant because she is disabled and thinks if he finds out he'll reject her. So she ends up rejecting him but is still keen. She spies on him and finds that he has a fiancé Gloria (Rebecca Gibney). When she looks as if she's going to be found out spying on him, Sophie runs away but gets in a tangle and ends up breaking her disabled leg (lucky break!). She then meets Eddie at a party and she now has a way to hide her disability and still go out with him. They hit it off but time is running out with the cast set to come off and she still hasn't told Eddie about her disability. Also Eddie is involved with a missing piece of jewellery and a weird detective Yuri (Jacek Koman) is chasing him and also falls for Sophie in a Russian literature way. Utterly silly and nutty movie that goes from one ridiculous concept to another poorly thought out one until it lands on a crazy crime plot that doesn't begin until 30 minutes left in the movie. Kept thinking that it'll turn out that Sophie was faking her disability as there's that much ridiculous stuff going on. Gloria knows about Sophie and just lets her hang around Eddie like she's borrowing him from her. The concept just never works. If you want a better Carides/LaPaglia movie, I recommend Brilliant Lies.

Update for 16 October...

A new Australian movie that I stumbled across when looking for more TV movies to cap. It came out 3 weeks ago, so I guess I'm slipping.

Sissy is a horror comedy where Cecilia (Aisha Dee), formerly Sissy, is a wellness influencer who has just passed 200,000 followers on Instagram and craves the attention. Of course, she has no friends in real life. She goes to the pharmacy and hears a familiar voice and sees her old school BFF Hannah (Hannah Barlow) and panics. Hannah catches up with Cecilia and invites her to her engagement party where she's marrying Fran (Lucy Barrett). It goes well enough except for being thrown up on by Hannah who then invites Cecilia to their hen's weekend, which she reluctantly accepts. Cecilia then finds out that another girl from school, Alex (Emily De Margheriti) is still Hannah's friend and is coming along on the hen's weekend. There's one problem and it's a big one. At school, there was an incident between 'Sissy' and Alex which ended with 'Sissy' injuring Alex severely and Alex is none-too-happy to see Cecilia again. Right from the get-go, Cecilia doesn't fit in with Hannah and her friends and then things go from bad to worse when Alex steals Cecilia's phone and forces her to confess to being a psychopath to her followers. Cecilia won't do it so Alex 'confesses' for her and goes to upload the video but Cecilia fights her and then stops her by bashing her over the head with a crystal, killing Alex. On the plus side, Cecilia is able to stop the upload but now she has to get rid of Alex without the others finding out. Good luck with that...

Not bad horror movie that plays like a comedy of errors as Cecilia keeps running into a new problem at every turn and eventually finds the best way to solve it is to kill everyone but Hannah. The comedy is a bit hit-or-miss but there's a few funny moments and Cecilia is enough of a pathetic character that she is almost sympathetic, well, except for the psychopathic tendencies I guess. There's also a few nasty moments, particularly Fran's death and the movie doubles down on the ridiculousness by the end. Overall, it's works well enough.

Update for 1 October...

Couldn't be bothered looking for an Australian/New Zealand movie, so it's another batch of short films chosen at random. Some actresses are familiar: Megan Peta Hill was in Open Water 3: Cage Dive, Whitney Duff had a few nude scenes in Tin God, Giselle van der Wiel showed her breasts in an episode of Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms and was the lead in the recent movie On Halloween.

Also, I shoud say that the Lucy Fry featured below isn't the same Lucy Fry of Lightning Point, Mako Mermaids and Wolf Creek plus a bunch of American stuff. Shame as this Lucy Fry has a nude scene in River Water.
