Update for 28 December...

One more Hong Kong movie for the 90s update.

Body Weapon is a rape revenge thriller where a female cop (Angie Cheung from last month's Raped By An Angel 3: Sexual Fantasy Of The Chief Executive) watches her new husband getting killed on their wedding night while the assailants rape her and leave her for dead. She decides to let the rapists go when they are caught and get her own justice but it seriously lacking in fight until a rambunctious gay man and her not-so-secret lover help her get the revenge she wants and unmask the man who is leading the rapists. Could've easily been another entry in the Raped By An Angel series but then it would have the ignominy as being the worst in the series because while Raped By An Angel 2-4 are bad movies, Body Weapon is even worse than them.

It opens with a rape scene where a naked lifeless woman is raped with a bloodied bag over her head and it doesn't recover. The central love triangle is laughably bad with the 'winner' getting the prize of being brutally murdered while the man she was supposed to be with is a massive cuckold who she rightfully tears apart. Then there's the rape gang, a couple of shitheads and a masked guy who forces his victims to arouse him. You'd be shocked to know that he's gay, so good luck with that and you'd be even more shocked to know that it turns out he's a cop who hates women and has a crush on the cuckold, well, he can have him. And of course he's played by Elvis Tsui, who's always playing sleazebags so it's no surprise at all who the masked man is when he turns up. The rape revenge stuff is so hamfisted, the lady cop gets advice from the campest gay guy ever who nearly beaten to death by a gang of vigilante women, who the lady cop saves and then teaches her to kick men in their 'G-spot', apparently right behind the balls. Then she goes after the rapists and of course they overwhelm her, almost rape her again (!) but thankfully the cuckold is stalking her and helps saves the day before she destroys the ugly rapist. Phew! Even the I Spit On Your Grave movies have a shred of credibility, not much of it but more than this terrible movie. The best that can be said is at least Angie Cheung shows a bit more in this movie, still you need superlative eyes to get a good look but at least she takes her underwear off.

Update for 27 December...

90s weekend update with a couple of Hong Kong movies.

Found Maang lui 72 siu si which had a bunch of English titles which were pretty shit so I went with it's original title. Basically a stalker movie with the victim being a temporarily blind woman (Veronica Yip) who is left in the care of their maid by her doctor husband for 3 days (the 72 hours of the title) when a man claiming to be an old school friend (Anthony Wong) of her husband's worms his way into the house and won't leave and then he does leave but comes back and that's when the terror starts. It's takes a while before we find out why the stalker is terrorising the woman but when it becomes clear there's a little sympathy for the stalker but the woman isn't having it and she won't go down without a fight. OK movie, not without a bit of silliness which suggests that the movie could've been a comedy but turns dramatic very quickly and never goes back making the movie is better for it. Reminds me quite a bit of the Australian cult B-movie Lady, Stay Dead where a hapless stalker gets himself in deeper with every move he makes although Anthony Wong's stalker is a lot less hapless after his intentions are made clear. Get the feeling the shower scene is what this movie is best known for, a slick bit of sleazy comedy mixed with tension that signals a change in tone for the movie. All in all, a lot better than I was expecting thanks to its two leads and a story that gets better the longer it goes.

Spinning the wheel and here's a couple of movies I've come up with.

Beautiful Ohio is one of those movies that has been mostly lost in time, couldn't pick it at all and a quick check suggests that the movie never got released in Australia. Then looking through the movie I finally remembered where I'd known it before during the scene where Michelle Trachtenberg is lying on her stomach and shows her bum. Another reason for it's obscurity might have something to do with the producer/director combo of Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank, who were married at the time of making the movie and had split up not long after it was finished. Ouch!!

Despite the expansive nude scene from Lorri Bagley, Trick is actually a sweet gay romantic comedy about one night in New York where an aspiring Broadway writer who is a bit shy around other men meets a confident go-go dancer and they desperately try to find a place to fuck but as the night continues and their options continue to narrow, they might just be doing more than fucking. It's not a bad movie, very New York, very 90s indie and a surprisingly good performance from of all people, Tori Spelling, as a terrible actress...

Update for 16 December...

Another 90s update.

Remember watching The Silence Of The Hams back in the day as I was/am a big fan of The Naked Gun movies, still very funny movies but I remember thinking Silence was a terrible imitation of those movies. Rewatching it now, it has a dire joke imitating studio logos in the first second and never recovers. It has the feel that writer/director/star Ezio Greggio watched the Zucker brothers movies and said I can do that but it turns out he couldn't. The movie also does that terrible thing where it replicates scenes from movies and the joke is it's replicating those scenes, something that would be a major part of the awful Date Movie/Epic Movie parodies that stunk up the late 2000s. Worse, while replicating the scenes, the narrator mentions what movie they're from and I give up. And while the movie does parody The Silence Of The Lambs (sample joke being Billy Zane's character is named Jo Dee Fostar and fuck me I can better than that), it spends way more time parodying Psycho and surprisingly ends up better for it, not much better, the difference between 0 and 1 out of 10. One decent joke in the movie is casting Martin Balsam, the private detective from Psycho as the same character (as Martin Balsam, eye roll) in this movie and when he enters the old house again is the only time I laughed at this abomination. Even a Mel Brooks cameo has a bad joke. Worse than I remember...

Update for 15 December...

Still with the 90s update, today with one I haven't capped before.

Saw Meatballs 4 back in the day, I think it's the only Meatballs movie I've seen and it's a fairly basic movie to the point where the plot is actually pretty boring. Yeah, it's a pretty bad movie but it delivers if all you want in a movie is T&A and a bit of dopey fun. Well, when the all of the female cast except the two main female character are all Playboy models, you really don't expect it to be anything else. And it's amazing that all the campers are at least in the early 20s and there's nothing in the movie to suggest that any of them are supposed to be high school students. Hell, Corey Feldman seems like the youngest in the cast and there's a joke at the end of the movie about him being in The Goonies and it's hard to believe that it was only 7 years earlier that movie was released.

Update for 13 December...

A couple of movies I capped off DVD recently have become available in HD, so it's time for an upgrade. Also made a couple of collages from Deadfall even though I've already done one.

Didn't watch New Blood when I capped it off DVD but have now watched it and it's a typical 90s violent crime thriller which strangely has John Hurt in the cast adding unnecessary gravitas to a pretty standard movie. From the strange period where everyone from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels got cast in lead roles so here we get Nick Moran adding not much. There's Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano (in a ridiculous wig) just before The Matrix with Carrie-Anne in a pretty much throwaway role. The plot is so convoluted that it plays out one way, a character makes up a back story to trick another character and it turns out that the trick story is actually the real story. And how John Hurt's character gets involved in the plot is too ridiculous to even contemplate. Someone had a lot of fun writing it, I wonder if they stopped for a second to wonder if it made a jot of sense...

Australian Classics for 10 December...

Some more Australian Classics for today's update, a bit more expansive than yesterday's update. Strangely, all three movies involve the main character having a traumatic experience involving their father, which is not something I chose, it just panned out that way.

Carmilla Hyde is 2010 Adelaide set Jekyll and Hyde influenced revenge thriller where Millie (Anna Lindner), a shy, socially anxious young woman shares a house with Sara (Nina Pearce) who has a casual boyfriend Nathan (Cameron Hall) who she offers to Millie and he's very keen but she doesn't take up the offer. Sara's party-loving friend Britt (Georgii Speakman) wants to move into the spare room but Millie doesn't want her mainly because Britt laughs at her awkwardness. One night, Sara convinces Millie to join them as the drink and take drugs in the lounge room and helps her get dressed up. Britt drugs her wine glass and Nathan makes a play for her and the next thing Millie knows is she wakes up having lost her virginity and the sense that she's been drugged. It also turns out that Sara and Britt filmed her having sex on Britt's phone. Millie decides to see a psychiatrist named Dr. Charles Webster (Sam Tripodi) who recommends hypnosis which ends up unleashing a new personality that Millie names Carmilla after the vampire novel, her favourite book. The personality is set to come out when she drinks a glass of wine and Millie goes about crafting Carmilla into a wild woman she always wanted to be. First, she has her way with Nathan again and then at a sex club she comes across Ed (Cale Morgan) who is brutally beating up a man and robbing him and she starts having sex with him in the alley way. Carmilla moves onto Britt which makes Nathan jealous, so he decides to follow her and sees her having sex with Ed. Nathan still wants her but Carmilla is bemused by his attempt to seduce her, so he attacks her, which she seems to have planned because Ed saves her and then she uses hypnotic suggestion to get him to go away. But her partnership with Ed leads to consequences, first he has unwanted sex with Britt and then he sets his sights on Sara, who he tries to rape when she's left alone in the house, but Carmilla stabs and kills him and the girls dump him at the beach where Carmilla again uses hypnotic suggestion to make him forget. But Carmilla hasn't forgotten about her revenge and sets up Britt by putting a video of her having sex while drugged with Ed on a slut-shaming site and this causes Britt to commit suicide. Dr Webster remembers where he knew Millie from and it turns out that he did some very bad things to her when they last met and Carmilla is still hungry for revenge.

A surprisingly long (almost two hours) revenge thriller that threatens to be good but but lets itself down by having too many plot contrivances involving druggings and a ludicrous fascination with hypnosis which leads to way to many conveniences including a very silly ending which feels like it goes on forever. There's also two instances of men given hypnotic suggestion while unconscious (is that even possible?) which conveniently removes them from the movie. And the psychiatrist does things with hypnosis which would surely land him in trouble, particularly brushing off what seems to be undiagnosed schizophrenia. The revenge plot seems to take a while to kick in, well over an hour into the movie and it seems to ignore Sara who was very much a part of the night where Millie unwillingly lost her virginity. I suppose you could make a case for rapist Ed being the revenge but it's never suggested that is the case and Mille/Carmilla is friendly with Sara at the end of the movie. There's a solid revenge thriller somewhere here but too much silliness gets in the way.

Crackers is a 1998 dysfunctional family Christmas comedy where young Joey (Daniel Kellie) climbs on top of a school building and in a seemingly depressive state jumps off the building but luckily lands in a bush. His frazzled mother Hilary (Susan Lyons) doesn't know what to do with him but Christmas is coming up and they decide to go to her Dad's place for the annual Christmas party, but this time with her new boyfriend Bruno (Peter Rowsthorn) and his angry son Angus (Christopher Chapman), both of whom Daniel hates. After an eventful car ride where they almost die, the four arrive at Hilary's parent's house and are greeted by her dad Jack (Terry Gill), her mother Vi (Maggie King), Vi's sister Dottie (Valerie Bader) and a barking dog Bomber. After lunch, they are joined by her wacky grandfather Albert (Warren Mitchell) who causes immediate havoc with his rooster. Joey is sent out to sleep in the garage with Albert, who farts a lot and just generally smells, which he is not looking forward to. Things get off to a great start for them when they steal the car and go to a pub and piss off some skinheads, ending with the skinheads chasing them off. Albert then unveils the long forgotten boat gathering dust in the shed and plans to get it up and running once more and teaches him a few moves to protect himself from attacks by Angus. At the barbeque lunch the next day, Jack is doing a good job burning the sausages while perving on Dottie and then shoots a rat just for fun. Bruno takes Joey out fishing which goes terribly ending with Joey losing a fishing rod and swimming back to the shore. Turns out it was Angus' rod and he takes it out of Joey who is drilling holes in Bruno's boat. Later while Bruno is cooking on the barbeque, Joey sets Bomber loose which sets off a series of events that ends with Bomber dying and Jack takes it out on Bruno.

They bury the dog in the backyard and Joey has a strange fascination with the grave and decides to dig one of his own and lie in it while breathing through a snorkel. This puzzles the family and Angus decides to jump on the grave hoping to collapse it but Joey gets out, only to be attacked by Angus who rubs dog shit on his face. Joey tries to fight back with a shovel but is stopped by Albert. While mucking around with the hose, Joey and Albert cause Jack to destroy his prized flower and Jack tells Albert to leave after Christmas dinner. Joey sees his mother and Bruno smoking a joint and making out in the cubby house so Joey stabs Bruno in the bottom with his pocket knife and gets a hold of the drugs which he places in one of Vi's mince pies. While filming around the place, Joey films Jack having sex with Dottie and then Angus steals the camera and it ends up with Vi. Albert is disappointed he can't get the boat up and running so Joey apologises to Bruno and gets him to help finish the boat all night. Vi watchs the video and sees the footage of her husband and Dottie and loses it. Hilary announces that she is pregnant but is not getting married to Bruno which her father disagrees with. Turns out Bruno eats the drugged mince pie and starts acting erratically causing Jack to kick him out and in the commotion, Vi shoots off a shotgun and shows them the tape. Albert has a heart attack which cause Joey to remember how his father died, a light plane accident and seems to be the reason he climbs up onto the edge of buildings. Dottie leaves. Joey tries to convince the family to go on a boating trip but with Albert hospitalised and everyone angry with one another, Joey takes matters into his own hands and steals Jack's car and drives off with the boat. He picks up Albert and they go to sea for a sail. Hilary, Jack and Vi find out where they are going and get Bruno back to go after them in his boat. Joey and Albert make it back to shore but Bruno runs out of petrol and then starts sinking from the holes Joey drilled into the boat. Joey and Albert and Angus go back so save Bruno, which they do, but on the way back to shore, Albert dies. Next Christmas at a carols event, Joey and the rooster cause mayhem.

Billed as the next big Australian comedy after The Castle was a big hit, Crackers didn't quite live up to expectations and it's not hard to see why. The Castle is a lovable, knockabout comedy while Crackers goes for crude jokes and is surprisingly hateful with a lead character who while distressed by the death of his father, acts like a complete shit and it's hard to have a lot of sympathy for him. He's also bullied mercilessly by Angus, also a terrible person and while Bruno is seen as a hapless foil, he hits Joey at one stage is more than a little off. There's not a lot of love in this family but the Joey and his great-grandfather have a moment at the end before he dies which while sweet, seems unearned and Joey's redemption is rushed and selfish at best. While dysfunction can be funny, when mixed with a healthy dose of hatefulness, it doesn't seem so funny.

Australian Classics for 9 December...

Haven't done an Australian Classics update in a while so it's time to dig into the collection. Today's update has a couple of Phil Avalon movies (Summer City, Summer City 2: Breaking Loose, Fatal Bond, Signal One, Signal One, Liquid Bridge, The Pact) and an indie comedy Reef 'n' Beef.

The Finder is a 2001 thriller where Rebecca (Anja Coleby) is taken from her car and kidnapped by Lew (Alan Cinis), who takes her in his kombi van to a remote location. Rebecca's father Bob (Barry Langrishe) receives a tape and decides to get in touch with Les Kearney (Simon Westaway), a former cop turned private investigator who works out of the local surf lifesaving club is playing phone tag with his girlfriend Michelle (Allison Cratchley), so it's not going well. Barry tells a very reluctant Les he has 24 hours to get them a million dollars and after some coaxing, Les accepts. Les visits her boyfriend Rick (Dieter Brummer) who tells her about an incident where a gang of drug dealers called the Natoli brothers including Leo (Paul Mercurio) and Sam (Callan Mulvey) drugged Rebecca and almost raped her before Rick saved her and copped a slashing for his trouble. While visiting a club owner with various links to the players, Rick, who was waiting in the car is murdered. When her kidnapper goes on an errand, Rebecca escapes and the kidnapper uses a paraglider to find her. Les gets his car salesman mate Ace (Alan Lovell) to do some errands for him while he goes an visits Rick's mother Irene (Rowena Wallace) and she tells him that he was going to propose to Rebecca yesterday morning before she was kidnapped and that they were struggling to pay the mortgage even though her husband Jim (Vic Rooney) has two jobs. Rebecca is still on the run but someone, not her kidnapper finally catches up with her. Les finds out that someone paid Jim and Irene's mortgage three days ago. Les visits Bob when he gets a call from another man involved in the kidnapping and Les gets him to stall the money drop-off by 24 hours but only manages to do so by a few hours.

Les visits Jim at his job at the men's boarding house and finds out that Jim was bought off by Bob and he used the money to pay his mortgage. They are interrupted by the other kidnapper, Paul Sterling (Tim McCunn) who Les fends off. While distracted, Rebecca stabs her kidnapper with a pair of scissors and escapes in the kombi van but only gets a little way down the road before she comes across Paul and ends up running off the road and into a tree. Turns out the Natoli brothers are the security in Lyle's club and that's where Leo finds Les and takes him out to the country to kill him. Les finds out the Paul killed Rick by elimination when the other Natoli brother Sam (Callan Mulvey) says he didn't kill him. Sam runs through a police checkpoint and a chase ensues and during the chase, Les jumps out of the car while Leo gets out soon after to kill him. Les barely escapes by playing chicken with a truck. Jim turns up at the surf lifesaving club beaten badly by Paul. Jim tells him where Rebecca and the kidnapper are and Les arrives with Ace and manages to save Rebecca and the kidnapper just before Paul was going to shoot them.

OK thriller but is riddled with a bunch of ridiculous stuff and a complicated plot that needs a whole lotta explaining and I'm not sure makes sense. The way the movie plays out, it tends to feel like a pilot to a TV series that never happened. Westaway plays his character in a laconic fashion almost like he doesn't care whether he wants to solve it at times and is quite good in the lead. Everyone else isn't given much to do and some characters come across as comical, particular Paul Mercurio's Leo who's not given much to do and he's constantly being made a fool. There's a whole bunch of odd moments throughout, no more so than the kidnapper using a paraglider to find a fleeing Rebecca which just looks like something the makers put it because they had access to it. All in all, the plot moves along quite nicely which makes the movie fairly watchable but it's so complex and probably doesn't make sense. And considering the quality of producer Phillip Avalon's previous movies, this is a step above the usual.

Sher Mountain Killings Mystery is a 1990 supernatural thriller (I think) where Davey-Joe (Jeffrey Rhoe) and Conrad (Richard Carter) break into the house of a 103 year-old adventurer and steal a stone that gives eternal life. They meet with intermediary Sole (Ron Becks) who is going to get $500,000 for it but before it can be handed over, Davey-Joe goes on the run and Conrad chases after him but he gets to the monorail and gets away. Davey-Joe's brother Alex (Tom Richards) was going on a camping trip but his friend cancelled so he asks his sister Muriel (Abigail, an Avalon regular) whether their mute, mentally handicapped brother Caine (producer Phillip Avalon), who she looks after, could come instead. Davey-Joe visits sleazy photographer Wacka (David Wheeler) to get more money so he can leave town and sell the stone but Wacka rats him out to Conrad and Sole. Turns out Davey-Joe hid the stone under Caine's bed and Caine finds it and decides to take it with him on the camping trip. Davey-Joe, Conrad and Sole wait until Muriel leaves the house to get the stone, but it's gone and Muriel comes back, so Conrad and Sole take her. Alex and Caine go to Sher Mountains National Park and leave their details with the ranger ('Aussie' Joe Bugner) who gives Caine a badge and says that he will keep him safe. Sole goes to Alex's house to find out where they're going and he ends up threatening his wife Dianne (Elizabeth McIvor) and son Billy (Steven Jacobs). Dianne tells them they are at Sher Mountain National Park. Muriel stabs Conrad and steals his gun but Sole takes Billy and drives off to the national park. Muriel, Dianne and Davey-Joe follow closely after them. During a ride in a boat, Caine loses the bag with the stone in it in the river. Both group of cars go past the ranger who senses something is up. Alex goes shooting and this helps Sole and Conrad find them. Sole threatens to kill Billy but Alex, Caine and Billy get away after Alex kicks Conrad in the balls. Caine loses the badge the ranger gets him. As night falls, the Ranger comes to help and finds the badge that Caine lost then stops Davey-Joe from causing more chaos.

After a night in the park, Caine wanders off to get the missing bag. Davey-Joe wakes up halfway up a tree and doesn't know how he got there. Sole and Conrad catch up with Alex and Billy but before he can shoot them, Conrad is hit in the arm with an arrow shot by the Ranger. The Ranger gives Caine the badge and his glasses that he lost. Conrad is slowly dying and Sole catches up with Caine who takes him to the bag in the river and along the way, Sole puts Conrad out of his misery. Caine points out the bag in the river and Sole goes into the river to get it. Muriel, Dianne and Davey-Joe go back to the ranger hut and find that it's changed completely, now looking like an abandoned house. As he comes back with the bag, Sole comes across a gigantic Ranger who Sole can't kill and takes the bag from him with Sole running away in bemusement. The Ranger then strikes Sole down in fire from the sky and then he disappears before Caine can thank him. The Ranger heads back to the house where Davey-Joe and Conrad stole the stone from and retakes his place as the 103 year-old adventurer.

Absolutely baffling movie and that's just the mouthful of a title that has no real killings in it unless you count the finishing off of Conrad and even then it's only one killing. The movie is apparently an adventure movie but is incredibly low key for an adventure with barely any action and the only interesting character in the whole movie is The Ranger but even he barely registers. The plot is so contrived, we just assume Davey-Joe puts the stone under Caine's bed because we never see it and we don't even know why he just ran away with the stone, I assume it's because the stone flashed in his pocket and forced him too but it's never explained. Then there's the whole ending with Sole and the Ranger which is so baffling, I have no idea what happens (he seems to dissolve into a fire or into the sky or something) and the movie seems to think being baffling is the same as being mysterious. Avalon as a mentally impaired mute is laughably bad, every time he turns up, he comes up with a new way to be incredibly shitty. The movie never really reaches any great heights and doesn't even bother to try, incredibly underwhelming stuff. There's no action, little adventure, the stakes are never more than low and the mystery isn't worth staying around for. Just one big yawn...

Update for 6 December...

Some brand spanking new horror movies in today's update. The original Castle Freak wasn't a great movie but it was directed by Stuart Gordon and his movies are always worth a look. The Shudder/Fangoria backed remake isn't bad, there's plenty of violence, a heaping of Lovecraft particularly in the final act and some decent nudity. And a late nod to another Stuart Gordon movie I'm assuming they're going to remake as well, which I'm a bit mixed about.

Freaky is the lateest Blumhouse horror comedy that basically a horror version of Freaky Friday where a serial killer (Vince Vaughn) body swaps with his latest victim, a school girl (Kathryn Newton) and they have 24 hours to swap back otherwise they stay that way. Silly enough fun, but when it comes to Blumhouse horror comedies I prefer Happy Death Day.

Update for 1 December...

A quick update from a new Australian movie.

The Taverna is a light comedy where the owner of a Greek restaurant (taverna) employs a bellydancer (Rachel Kamath) for the night but it goes pear-shaped when her soon to be ex-husband who she is fighting with and has a restraining order against her turns up with his new rich girlfriend. She refuses to go out for a second performance, so one of the waitresses (Emily O'Brien-Brown) decides to fill in and chaos ensues involving two shitty walk-in customers, a kidnapping, a hit-and-run incident and a troublesome possum. Being 10 years since the director's last movie and this one is a helluva lot lighter than his usual fare (Em4Jay, Tom White, Everynight... Everynight). The movie is very light and wacky, the comedy is mild and has a largely implausible plot and a late twist that washes away a major crime and closes out a marriage in the most ridiculous way. But the movie has enough going on to distract from it's flaws and if you like ethnic comedy, this sitcom-like movie will probably satisfy.

Also, great new feature on the classification site which makes my job easier. Looks like it's only for movies the play in the cinema, so I'm guessing The Taverna was supposed to play in cinemas before the pandemic but as far as I know, it didn't end up happening. It may have played in other states though but the state I am in has had cinemas closed pretty much until a couple of weeks ago.
