Update for 14 August...

More for the 90s weekend with another couple of Category III 90s Hong Kong movies, both of which star Anthony Wong.

I capped the 1993 movie The Untold Story a couple of years ago and remember being repulsed by it's mix of nasty violence and slapstick comedy, so I was reticent to watch the 1998 sequel. Turns out most of the ugliness has been taken away although the cannibalism plot remains, stripped back and doesn't have the impact of the original which is probably for the best. The plot is now about a mainland woman (Paulyn Sun) coming to work with her cousin (Yeung Fan) and her husband at their restaurant and she takes a shine to the husband while his wife off fucking other men. Oh and she's an escaped lunatic who has no problem killing people including her cousin. Officer Lazyboots (Anthony Wong downgraded from star of the original to bozo cop here) is highly skeptical of the mainlander (turns out everyone in Hong Kong seems to hate the Chinese, a strangely common theme throughout the movie) and he has every right to. The husband then sees the woman take over his life and eventually nail him to the floor. So fun and games I guess... The movie is basically a toned down gender swap of the original and is fairly unmemorable. Paulyn Sun is not bad as the mainland cousin. Turns out there's a third Untold Story. I could probably guess the plot...

Erotic Nightmare from 1999 has a strange structure that ends up being a movie of two halves. In the first half, Anthony Wong comes across a scammy wizard who sells him erotic dreams as his wife isn't interested in sex and he's horny. Well, it turns out after every dream, something bad happens. First the dog is brutally killed then his mother is murdered. He tries to end the dreams but the wizard wants to take everything from him. And he does, killing the man after he signs over his entire estate in a dream. In the second half, the man's brother comes home from Malaysia to pick up the pieces and finds out what happened to his brother and then sees that the wizard's wife (Pinky Cheung, always a welcome sight even if she's a great tease) is being abused by her husband. Turns out the brother is a bit of a wizard himself and he teams up the abused wife to put an end to the bad wizard. Strange idea for an erotic horror thriller with plenty of sex and nudity particularly from Kei Heung in her only movie. It's actually quite strange that the movie loses it's lead actor at halfway, you don't see that too often and especially someone as big a name as Anthony Wong.

Volpina is about a man who goes to a witch to get what he wants and that's a women he's interested in. El Secadero de Iguanas is actually a 2018 movie about a epileptic woman who works at the town bar owned by her abusive father and she sleeps with her brother when their father is not around. Meanwhile various people in her life start dying and the woman sees it as an opportunity to change who she is.

More new Spanish movies including the psychological thriller Libélula. Funnily enough there was a Spanish movie released less than a year ago called Libélulas released on Netflix. Totally different story though. Not the first time this title confusion has happened recently with the two Venus movies. They need to get together and figure this out...

Update for 6 August...

90s weekend time with 3 movies from French director Patrice Leconte including a movie I've seen way too many times in Le Mari de la Coiffeuse (The Hairdresser's Husband) but hadn't seen for a while until it turned up in the early days of SBS World Movies. A genuinely oddball movie about a man who's main goal in life is to marry a hairdresser after a session with one began his sexually awakening as a kid. Some quite odd moments, that nutty dance Jean Rochefort does and that quite depressing out-of-nowhere ending, it's really is some kind of movie. Between this and Jamón, Jamón (among others I haven't seen), Anna Galiena sure was sexy in early 90s movies.

Quite like La Fille sur le Pont (The Girl on the Bridge) too, similar sort of story to The Hairdresser's Husband with a man (Daniel Auteuil) saving the life of a young woman (Vanessa Paradis) as she tries to commit suicide. After, they form a partnership which revives the man's career as a once-great knife thrower with she being his 'target'/muse. Another fairly odd movie, not as sexy but a good watch.
