Chances: New Cast Member

I mentioned previously that the cast of Chances has been thinned out, possibly for cost reasons, possibly because a widespread nudity clause was instituted and some didn't want in. At least half the original cast has gone now and so the show is pretty thin in talent and storylines. Episode 70 marks the appearance of the character Stephanie, played by newcomer Molly Brumm, who otherwise had a very limited acting career. Her character comes straight out of the gate with a nude scene and then adds quite a few more over these 4 episodes. Almost like when things got boring, they drag her character in to strip off and liven things up. In episode 70, Molly receives a guest credit before being upgraded to the opening credits in episode 71.

Episode 70

3 nude scenes from Molly in her debut episode opening up with her changing clothes before receiving a package where she receives a print out on Alex (Jeremy Sims), who she is tasked to 'look after' in the coming episodes. It's hard to describe the character Stephanie as she's everything to everyone. Her character reminds me of Anne Heche's character in Wild Side. Technically a prostitute, she has her finger in many pies and here she worms her way into a job with Alex's advertising agency, introducing herself to him by taking off her panties and stuffing them in his muffler to cause his Porsche not to work, then magically work when she takes them out.

Later, Stephanie would seduce a lay priest and then finally seduce Alex by posing as his missing girlfriend Paris (previously Annie Jones).

Episode 71

Stephanie is still 'taking care' of Alex and has sex with him in the shower where we see Molly Brumm's breasts briefly and her bottom a fair bit in a lengthy sex scene. Intercut in this scene and throughout the rest of the episode are flashbacks of dazed Alex underwater being saved by a naked woman, who is played by Rebecca McKenzie. The naked woman will be significant in the next lot of episodes and is played by a different actress.

We also have Jack (Tim Robertson) and Bill (Michael Caton) 'auditioning' strippers for Sharon (Mercia Deane-Johns) who is holding a party in her bar. We see a couple of auditionees Raunchy Raquel played by Samantha Cunningham doesn't get naked but another uncredited stripper performs does. Anyway, this plot ends with the party being a hen's party so, wrong gender for the stripper and with an impatient throng of women (led by comedian and soon-to-be big Melbourne radio star Tracy Bartram) baying for someone to strip with Bill ending up having to lose the clothes. I love how 6 years later Michael Caton becomes Australia's favourite Dad in The Castle and think about this a lot as he has yet another sleazy scene in this show.

Also notable is that this is Cathy Godbold's last episode, relegated to 'guest star' for this episode.

Episode 72

Alex is visited by a nun Mary (Ann Rigby) who claims to have nursed Alex back to health in West Australia where lost his memory a year previously. She seems to have a crush on Alex and as his wont, she eventually falls for him as nuns do. Will she have to leave the church? Well no because this is Chances and it turns out she is a prostitute who was paid to seduce Alex (another one!). Ann didn't have much of a career in acting (she does reappear in a couple more future episodes) and is probably most notably known for a stint on yet another version of Blankety Blanks in the 90s.

Also appearing in this episode of note is Tiffany Lamb, also playing a prostitute who looks after Bill. She was a notable figure in the 80s and 90s in Australia, probably better known for co-hosting Perfect Match and It's A Knockout than for her acting work. A few things to cap from the episode but nothing too revealing sadly.

A quick preview of upcoming episodes and I've watched up to the end of the 1991 episodes (episode 77) plus a couple more and well, there's way more to come. Molly continues stripping off and an actress of some note who briefly appeared in an earlier episode comes back as a new character and spends a lot of her screen time wearing very little including one incredible scene where she wears a short dress and... you'll have to wait until the next update for that one.

Chances: It's every episode now!

The previous update saw Chances have a change in direction which began a cull of the main cast between episodes 61 and end around episode 71. Some formerly major characters became minor characters and sometimes not even credited in the episode. There's now an extra special focus on the character of Alex (Jeremy Sims) which will become more of thing in coming episodes after the clean out. Kimberley Davenport, who had a few nude scenes along the way was immediately dumped, never seen again after episode 60 and the daughter her character had with an unknown paternity between Alex and Ben (Rhys Muldoon) is written out with only a line of dialogue, never to be spoken of again. Same with the grandmother character played by Yvonne Lawley and Jack's wife Sarah (Ann Grigg), both dumped without ceremony. Other characters at least get a send off but the show goes from a fully furnished soap opera to a sparse, oddly focused mess so fast it's truly bizarre.

Anyway, these are still the in between episodes and have quite a bit of nudity in them and from actresses playing characters that are strangely far more realised than those in the previous update despite their only appearing in 1 or 2 episodes.

Episode 66

At the start of episode 66, we are introduced to Caterina Donovan (Christine Harris) who is studying members of the Taylor family and then focuses on Ben. She chats him up, gets him interested in pursuing her then tells him she's been paid to kill him by some mysterious organisation who will kill her if she doesn't kill him. After a particularly long bout of sex, Ben suggests that she can pay off the mysterious organisation so she doesn't have to kill him and Caterina suggests she'll need 1 million dollars, which neither have. So, being a former bank teller, Caterina formulates a plan where she steals the million electronically from somewhere (no idea where) and then pay them off and live happily ever after together, which she does using Ben's business account as the middle man. Then she and the million disappear and you're not going to believe it but she's a conwoman and she's conned Ben but not of money he didn't have but... look it doesn't make any sense but we got some decent nudity from Christine so who cares, right?

Christine has a pretty extensive list of credits from 80s Australian TV shows like Prisoner and Carson's Law before quitting acting possibly after this role. I'd honestly never heard of her before this so I can't say if she's has done any other nudity but considering her other TV work, probably not.

Episode 67

Guess who's back? It's Cheryl (Kristen Lyons), who was one of the wives of bigamist Eddie (Dennis Miller) who was killed by his first wife Connie (Deborah Kennedy). But previously she was played by character actress Louise Siversen, who's not known for sexy roles so Kristen is drafted in. Anyway, Cheryl still has to pay off Eddie's debts so Cheryl turns to sex work much to the chagrin of Connie's son Chris (Mark Kounnas) who likes her. Well, by the end of the episode they end up together and we get a couple of nude scenes from Kristen.

Kristen's credits are quite sparse but she seems familiar and I can't quite figure out where. Going by her limited credits, I'd suggest that her Chances scenes are her only nudity.

Also in the episode we come across Shelley (Ann-Maree Spencer) who has lost her purse and Chris helps her out and they leave together. He then seems to spurn her sexual advances but we do see her breasts briefly. Interestingly, Ann-Maree would appear later on Chances in a scene I captured previously (but is currently not available but will be redone when I get to it) and I had a look at the video and the scene is absolutely nuts.

Episode 68

Chris and Cheryl have decided to run off together but Cheryl still has to pay off Eddie's debt. Enter some Italian kid who's skipped out on his boarding school and is looked after by Chris's mother Connie. Well, the Italian kid's mother is unhappy he's gone missing a flies especially out to fix it and it turns out that she's super rich and has offered to put up Connie, her other son, Chris and Cheryl so that they can get rid of them from the show. Well, at least they get an exit as others weren't really afforded.

Another brief nude scene from Kristen in this episode. Also, the rich Italian mother is played by Anna-Maria Monticelli, no stranger to nude including from the Pierce Brosnan starring American thriller Nomads, the excellent 80s New Zealand drama Smash Palace and other Australian movies like The Dark Room and The Edge Of Power. No nudity here but has a brief underwear scene.

Episode 69

A few nude scenes including a couple of brief from a distance scenes from Fiona Carson who plays the live-in masseuse of Paris's (Annie Jones) father Sir Malcolm (Kevin J. Wilson). Fiona is a returnee who featured in the previous update as a 'topless hairdresser', mostly in the background. She gets a slightly better role here but still doesn't utter a line of dialogue.

Things are going to slow down for a while as there's more stuff to cap. I'll try to release a disc (4 episodes) a week but you've seen how I've been keeping up with that since I've started. So what's coming in the next lot of episodes? The cast is completely cleaned out and the main cast is whittled down from 16 with some recurring characters to 8 with no recurring characters, particularly female characters who now turn up, get nude and bugger off and some will come back again as someone else. Also a major character is introduced and it's played by someone I've never seen before and barely has another credit. So bizarre!

Still nearly 60 episodes to go.

Chances: It begins!!!

When people think of Chances, they pretty much always talk about the crazy plots, closed sets and copious amounts of nudity that it's famous for. The reality is that for the first 60 episodes is a pretty stock standard soap opera drama with a little bit of nudity and sexy stuff, nothing like Number 96 or The Box from the 1970s. Well after episode 60, the gate is opened and the bull has bolted and a slew of random, barely known actresses have been recruited in to show their breasts and sometimes more. The plots haven't necessarily wildly changed yet but the signs are there.

Below is some commentary of what happens in the episodes followed by a description of what's to come.

Episode 61

Now set a year after episode 60 and with bad boy Alex (Jeremy Sims) now working as a farmhand and suffering from a spot of amnesia, he comes across Paris (Annie Jones, joining the show just from Neighbours) who's the rich farmer's daughter and takes an interest in him. She brings him back to Melbourne where she has an interest in buying the hairdresser salon owned by Ben (Rhys Muldoon) and this begins to sparks memories of his past. Anyway, the salon is struggling and co-worker Sharon (Mercia Deane-Johns) suggests that to drum up business, they should have a topless hairdressing night where they get in women to cut men's hair while topless. Sounds plausible, well for the 90s...

So, Charity (Renae Kucina) comes in and shows her 'skills' to Ben and Paris. She also joins in as the topless hairdressing night goes ahead along with Frances McDonald and Fiona Carson. Don't really know much about any of the actresses but Renae is credited in a bunch of other Chances episodes later in the series, so I'll keep an eye out for her.

Episode 62

In the video below Jack (Tim Robertson), after having a go at Bill (Michael Caton) for dating a younger girl Olivia (Catherine McColl-Jones), who he met at the topless hairdressing night (she didn't take her top off although she's auditioned for Hair), finds a younger girl of his own in Amelia (Barbara Hall) and he has a bit of fun with her. Later, she calls him 'Dad' as she asks him for a towel, which he was not very happy with.

Episode 64

Jack's back at it again, this time 'helping' Cynthia (Donna Bennett) with her boat problems before he's called away.

It should be noted that the Prime Minister dies of a heart attack in this episode, fucked to death (unseen) by a former madam/prostitute turned round-the-world yachtswoman Maggie (Kate Fitzpatrick).

Episode 65

Mercia's had a few nude scenes in the series so far but her last one was back in episode 26. In this episode she shows a little side-boob as she gets hot and heavy with her employee Nathan (Justin Melvey). Later, she is kidnapped by oddball drifter/artist Jock (John Gregg) who wants to take her to Lassiter's Reef so that he can get all the gold that is promised there and be with her (it's poorly explained why he kidnapped her). Anyway, she tries to escape unsuccessfully and eventually tries seducing him but he isn't interested but it's enough for him to decide to let her go (no idea why). Mercia shows her breasts in this scene.

Later, Sharon goes back to her bar and finds Nathan with an unknown woman and we see her breasts as she puts her clothes back on.

I highly recommend looking into the story of Lassiter's Reef, a totally 'real' place that was made up by a shyster and crazy people have been desperate to find in the middle of nowhere in Australia, including the 90-something possibly still alive son of the shyster.

I've watched the next two episodes of the show and well, there's a reason why I only capped 6 episodes for today's update and it's because there's more nudity in these two episodes than there is in this update. And the stories behind them are really something too. Hopefully I'll have it up in the next few days.
