Another 3 Australian movies for the Saturday update, this time it's 3 movies from the 80s, all 'sort-of' involving secret societies. Definitely a lot of secrecy going on though...

The Edge Of Power is a 1987 political thriller where a bunch of friends get together and come up with a curious hypothetical: What if a politician was a secret Nazi? Well, it was a bit of a joke while drunk with mates but then a socialist newspaper runs with a story that 'next big thing' politician Peter Mueller (Ivar Kants) is a secret Nazi and all hell breaks loose. His people decide to ignore it as it's not true but the people behind the socialist newspaper Ivar (John Stone) and Judy (Katherine Thomson) won't let it go and dress up as fake Nazis and infiltrate his press conferences. The socialists are approached by a power broker (Vic Rooney) who gives them money to stir up more trouble but Ivar refuses the money then they come to Judy and she takes the money. At the next press conference, things go incredibly wrong; Ivar is kicked to death and Mueller is stabbed and it looks like everyone was set up. A petit-bourgeois journalist who used to have ideals Steve (Henri Szeps) gets pangs of guilt for concocting the Nazi story and decides to investigate further. And what he uncovers is a conspiracy that could be coming from the highest office in the land. This movie attempts to make Australian politics seem exciting but it's the most boring shit imaginable and this movie is not in anyway believable. Socialists posing as Nazis for who knows why, a stupid story that ends up growing legs in the dumbest way possible and assassination after assassination, mostly for no reason whatsoever and then the final twist being completely unbelievable, particularly if you've lived through the last 20 years. It's all more than a bit silly and so many people's motives are well, your guess is as good as mine. A terrible mess with less understanding of Australian politics than I have...

The Everlasting Secret Family is a 1987 secret society drama where school boy (Mark Lee) is lured away by a powerful senator (Arthur Dignam) to become his illicit lover. They form a relationship while a chauffeur (Dennis Miller) drives him and sort of looks after him. After a while, the school boy becomes disillusioned by the relationship and looks for a way out. He tries with fellow secret society member, a high court judge (John Meillon), but he dies of a heart attack during some light BDSM. But before he dies, the judge introduces the school boy to a doctor where he goes to keep himself looking young, despite still being a teenager. The senator also takes a wife (Heather Mitchell), who the school boy despises. He continues the relationship with the senator and 14 years later, the school boy has ingratiated himself into the senator's family, now as the senator's son's 'tutor' and looking exactly the same. Oh and he and the senator's son have fallen for one another and mummy is not happy about that one bit. All very odd with no-one questioning why a senator just openly takes a boy from the school but I guess once you're part of a secret society, nothing really matters. I suppose it helps that Mark Lee is way too old to play a school boy. Lots of strange, baffling behaviour where everyone seems to have a secret of some sort and the death of a high court judge is no big deal. And while it's all very progressive towards homosexuality, you can tell that it's from a less enlightened time because there's a baffling scene involving the school boy 'dragging' up to show that he's hit his 'lowest point'. Very odd movie...

The Boy Who Had Everything is 1984 drama set in the 60s where John (Jason Connery, son of Sean) is a 'fresher' at an exclusive college where he is going through the hazing period and he absolutely despises it and the elders know he does so they make his life an extra special hell. This isn't helped by his mother (Diane Cilento, Connery actual mother) who is struggling with life on her own and keeps thinking her husband is coming back in between bouts of alcoholism. John also has a girlfriend Robin (Laura Williams), who he is struggling to find sexual chemistry with. All this heats up and causes John to lose it, rebelling against and just being plain angry to the people hazing him and also 'finding his feet' with a string of sex workers. He become immensely disillusioned and it comes out in bursts of violence and his relationship with Robin hanging by tenterhooks. Hard to get into this movie as John is so mopey right from the start and he doesn't elicit much sympathy along the way. Plus, he has 'everything' so who cares really. John's just not an interesting enough character to care about.

Both The Edge Of Power and The Boy Who Had Everything are from VHS rips so the quality is little down but both are actually pretty good quality for VHS rips. Very brief nudity in the below clips. Anna Maria Monticelli only has nudity in a couple of photos and the relevance of those photos to the plot are so baffling I cannot properly explain it to you. Beth Child briefly has her breast sucked in The Everlasting Secret Family but it could be a double. Caz Lederman has a blink-you'll-miss peek at her bottom, so much so that I didn't notice it until I lightened up the shot (see frame below).

(20th Anniversary Week) Update for 11 December...

Haven't capped a 1970s movie in the Saturday Australian/New Zealand update, so here's a couple of 70s movies from Australia.

Cosy Cool is a 1978 motorcycle road movie where Cosy (writer/director Gary Young) is fired from his job at a petrol station and then pours petrol over the owner. He calls up his mate Gracious Grytt (John Wilson) to ask him to come on a road trip with him and they travel around the country doing things like winning a car/motorcycle appreciation contest, having some fun with some 'chicks' who conveniently turn up and just getting into general trouble for being motorcycle riders. Also, two men are setting them up for a bizarre cult murder for some reason and a rifle-toting crazy dude wants revenge for humiliating him in front of pubgoers. Baffling, incoherent movie that flagrantly rips off Stone and Easy Rider and is just all-round amateurish. The 'plot' is barely worth mentioning and we never really know why some dude wants them 'gone' so much. There's also large chunks of plot written on the screen and plenty of footage is just repeated. There's long segments of the movie that just the two riding their bikes or a drag race meeting which is inexplicably put in, clearly to pad out the movie to a feature length 72 minutes. There's one scene where a car is driven into a tree with people in it which looks way too real. At the end, there's a shot of the infamous Comancheros bikie gang for some reason. Clearly aimed at the roadshow set where fetishistic shots of cars, bikes and girls were all you needed, this is an embarrassingly shitty movie.

In Search Of Anna is a 1978 road movie where newly released from prison Tony (Richard Moir), who spent 6 years in kill or be killed Pentridge Prison decides to visit an old 'friend' named Anna. He hitchhikes his way from Melbourne to Sydney where he comes across free spirit Sam (Judy Morris) in her 1938 Buick who takes him close to Sydney. Earlier while just released from prison, Tony moves back in with his father who has become a mess after the suicide of his wife and Tony's mother and Tony resents him for it. He catches up with old friend Jerry McGuire (Chris Haywood) who at first seems chummy but is actually none-too-happy to see Tony back when he thinks he's the boss of their little gang. He arranges a beating which prompts Tony's trip. Later, Tony catches up with Sam in Sydney living with her wimpy husband Peter (Bill Hunter) and they start to fall for one another. In a way, a similar and definitely more competently made movie than Cosy Cool although the plot jumps around so much that it's hard to track when in time something is happening. Both Moir and Morris are pretty good and the car Sam drives is really something. Bill Hunter, usually known for his brusque manly roles is strangely given the role of a cuckold and feels wasted here. Also one of my favourite movie things is when a character has the same name as a character in a later, more popular movie and this movie has Chris Haywood playing a character called Jerry McGuire who refers to himself in the third person constantly and it's never not funny to me and me alone. Not a bad movie, just a confusing one to keep up with.

(20th Anniversary Week) Update for 8 December...

Another couple of 90s movies in today's update.

The other day I mentioned I started this site because I was disappointed with what was being missed and tried to fill a hole. Nowadays, most things are far more accessible than they were so it's hard to find stuff that hasn't been capped. I still have better access to a number of Australian and New Zealand movies than cappers from other countries as you can see by a far bit of rare Australian movies and short films that I've been able to find over time.

I became a fan of foreign movies by watching the channel SBS in the 1990s and there was a whole lot of movies that weren't available anywhere else at the time. Sometimes you'd find the occasional foreign movie at the video shop but in my area that was somewhat rare. I did find shops around town that did have a greater selection but it was still limited. Most foreign movies were only available via late night SBS showings. I note that SBS was jokingly called Sex Before Soccer and there were quite a few sexy movies shown and you'll find a number of movies I capped off of SBS over time and I still occasionally cap from the movie channel (as recently as 10 days ago).

Inevitably, I got interested in Spanish movies and that began with Pedro Almodovar movies, which were a type of crazy I'd never seen before and I moved on from there. I started Spanish updates as far back as 2003 and did a Spanish update once a year up until about 2012 or maybe later. Now I just cap Spanish movies when I come across them. I recently passed capping 400 Spanish movies and as I said yesterday, I now have capped over 40 Spanish TV series.

Sometimes I just latch onto things and get a little carried away. For some reason I started getting into capping 90s movies somewhere around 2016 and it quickly went from every once in a while to a monthly update then inevitably a weekly update which has been going since around 2019. I've just past 1000 movies from the 1990s on the site and as this update proves, things aren't slowing down quite yet.

Today's update features a couple of crazy movies from the 90s. I've never seen Modern Vampires before and I'm not sure it was ever released in Australia and if it was it definitely was not on DVD. From Matthew Bright, director of Freeway and Freeway II: Confessions Of A Trickbaby so you know this is going to be crazy and it gets more than a little nuts. Natasha Gregson Wagner plays her vampire character like a savage lion, complete with growling sound effects and a lot of the supporting cast are really hamming it up especially Craig Ferguson but Kim Cattrall isn't without a moment or two. Casper Van Dien, just off Starship Troopers, is an absolute dead loss which would be a feature of his career as a B-grade hack. Silly enough for a watch plus a bit of nudity from Natasha.

I think I've seen director Mike Leigh's Naked before but I barely remember it and it's even crazier than Modern Vampires. Basically a man (David Thewlis) comes to London and finds an old girlfriend Louise (Lesley Sharp) then begins to infiltrate the lives of various people while skirting the edge of homelessness. One part sympathetic character, one part the most annoying person in the world, Thewlis is a whirlwind throughout the movie even after he gets beaten up. But I don't say he's the most horrible character in the movie because that goes to Jeremy (Greg Cruttwell), a charmless man full of misogyny which leads to rape and then he just makes himself at home at Louise's house which he's the landlord of and decides he's not going to leave. Poor housemate Sandra (Claire Skinner) arrives home and becomes incredibly flabbergasted at the nightmare she's come home too. Can't believe Greg Cruttwell quit acting not long after this as he would've had British arsehole roles locked up for the rest of his life (I'm sure he played one in George Of The Jungle). It's a full on, ugly movie and really something.

(20th Anniversary Week) Update for 7 December...

Just a quick update today as another movie I was capping had Issues.

Continuing on with a little history and there's not much to go.

In November 2005, I started johnnymoronic.com, which I still use but it's leads to the main site johnny-moronic.com. I now had a shared server with 200GB and it only took a few days before I first broke the bandwidth of the site when I posted videos of Kelly Brook from Three. This would happen a number of times using this server which was a pain and I had to use other sites to offset this but for the most part it worked well until it didn't. I had more than a few offers in this period to host the site which was generous but when I set out what I needed, they all backed away saying 'I can't do that'...

In 2008, I started Johnny Moronic Television. Up until this stage I really hadn't capped that many TV shows, focusing mainly on movies. The goal was to capture as much as Australian TV as possible, which has included all of the soap operas and I pretty much have. This has expanded to shows from other countries, including over 40 series from Spain which I hadn't realised I'd done so many.

Moved to the current server in early 2012 and it's been excellent, can't complain. It's been up all the time and the issues have been incredibly minor. I had to get more hard drive space recently and the site currently has about 2TB of stuff to look at/download.

August 2015 was when Australian/NZ Actresses Overseas section started on the back of having no internet for a couple of weeks so what else to do but start a new section (I also made videos from 4 seasons of Go Girls DVDs). While I did capture some international movies and TV shows featuring Australian and New Zealand actresses, I'd realised that I had missed a helluva lot, so that needed to change. The section is closing in on 500 series which is a lot of movies and TV made by overseas productions starring Australian and New Zealand actresses. I think I've done all of the major stuff and what's remaining is a lot of little things plus all the new releases hopefully when they happen.

After 7 years, I finally began the Australian/NZ Actress Nude Guide in June 2021, a ridiculously large project that I just would add little bits to every once in a while and then realise I was still years away from completion. A major help to getting this section finished was the pandemic lockdown and without that I'd probably still be years away from a completion point. It's also one of these things where I realise that there's still a whole lot of stuff I need to look at, so it's still a fair way from a complete completion and maybe I'll get there one day, although I made a list on IMDB recently which made for depressing viewing as to how many movies I've still got to find let alone look at.

(20th Anniversary Week) Update for 6 December...

So, twenty years ago today I started a Yahoo! Group for Johnny Moronic Capturing (which was only shut down this time last year). I'm kind of winging it, so I don't know what I'm going to write so I'll start with a 'brief' history.

One day at university in 1998 I was bored and I can't remember how but I ended up discovering Imaging and Scanning Artists on-line and from there I found celeb forums. For three years I lurked just collecting stuff from other artists on-line and had a pretty mean collection of images. There weren't many videos around at this time but they were starting to become available, nowhere near the quality of today's videos but a 320x240 video of a scene was considered more than acceptable in 2001. But I didn't have the space for videos, they were too big and I was still using a 20GB hard drive as my main drive (I've still got it and it worked when I checked it recently).

Around mid-2001, I became disappointed that a lot of the stuff that I was watching, mostly Australian movies were not being capped. There was a very small Australian celeb community at that time and they were mainly into Black and White Magazine scans which was still going very strong at the time. Hardly anyone capped movies so I wondered if I could capture video. Well, I had access to a media lab which had a video capture system so I bought in a bunch of videos from the local store and taught myself using Virtual Dub (a program I still use regularly today), I was able to capture decent quality video at about 10-15 frames a second at 720x576 size, which was perfect for collages, not quite good enough for videos though. It took a while to get the confidence up to post what I had done but by the time I posted my first collage, I'd captured about a dozen movies which would form a part of my early series (and some I never got around to finishing off).

One such Australian movie nude scene I'd never seen available anywhere was Miranda Otto's nude scene in the 1996 movie Love Serenade, so that became my first ever collage. According to my old list of early series, I posted my first collage to a bunch of boards I was a member of on the 26th July 2001 and I remember getting very little love. So, I went back to the drawing board and decided to start again and while I was bored at work, I made the Yahoo! Group and posted the link on various boards plus I reposted the Miranda Otto collage and promised a weekly update.

My first ever collage. I have recaptured this movie 3 further times since, twice on DVD in 2006 then 2016 and finally in HD in May of this year. You can see the progression here.

My early series seem to be a mix of stuff I experimented with from the video shop and stuff I recorded from TV. Series 2 was Caroleen Feeney from Bad Manners which I recorded off TV (which I swear was on again recently and I missed it). A couple of weeks ago I posted my collages from series 3 of Jasmin Tabatabai from the German movie Die Putzfraueninsel, 4, 7 and 11 were Australian movies I hadn't seen capped anywhere Soft Fruit, That Eye, The Sky and Angst. 5, 6 and 8 were SBS recordings: the Portuguese movie Testamento, Sofie Gråbøl in the very good Norwegian cult thriller Isle Of Darkness and a Polish movie called Far From Each Other.

My first captures from DVD, series 9, was from the Larry Clark movie Another Day in Paradise. We got DVD relatively late in Australia, the first movie I saw on DVD was The Mexican which was a 2001 release and didn't get my first DVD drive until around then. I think DVD had been going in Australia for about a year up until that point but I've seen DVD collages from overseas cappers from 1997/1998.

I bought my first video capture card around this time and the aforementioned Angst was the first movie I capped on it (I think. I definitely capped the movie with the capture card just whether or not I captured one of the others first). I would also post very small videos to the Yahoo! Group as there was enough space for a few at a time. I found some of them recently and they are poor quality, a time capsule of 2002 where an illegal version of DivX 3 was brand new and made a leap forward in the quality of captured videos despite it's annoying watermark.

Things went well up until May 2002 when I took a break and came back a month later with a brand new site on FortuneCity, a site that I would run until late 2005 when I was unceremoniously dumped by them. There was a brief period between 2003-2004, about 6 months or so where a very nice person gave me access to a 20GB server which was more than FortuneCity was offering plus I could post videos. This would be it's downfall as my posting of videos from the newly released DVD of Gross Misconduct featuring Naomi Watts would break the site and that was the end of that.

I'll stop there with more to come in the coming days.

Over to today's update, a couple of 90s movies off DVD, well it turns out Honest is actually a 2000 movie but I make the rules so it's a 90s movie now.

Have never seen Honest before and it was never released in Australia despite All Saints being a huge band around that time. I bought it from the UK for 1 cent (plus postage) a few years back (I also bought the DVD for the TV series Honest, a remake of the New Zealand show Outrageous Fortune at the same time and haven't capped that either). Directed by Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, it's a late 60s set crime thriller with a darkly comic edge where the two Appleton sisters and Melanie Blatt play sisters who rob for a living and then get in over their head. Older sister Gerry (Nicole Appleton) gets caught by American rich kid Daniel (Peter Facinelli) during a heist and they end up falling for one another. The other sisters rob the wrong guy and one of them gets shot and now they have a gangster after them. Then the sisters and Daniel go for one last heist, a stash of money hidden in the pussy of a mannequin art piece before they leave the country and it's nailbiting stuff. Surprisingly low key movie, the All Saints girls aren't great actresses and would never act again (the other All Saint not in this movie, Shaznay Lewis would also only act in one movie: Bend It Like Beckham) but Nicole Appleton looks like she stepped out of 1968 while no-one else does. The plot is pretty silly but the final act is fairly exciting and the Appleton sisters both have nude scenes so you can't complain about that.

Update for 3 December...

Bringing the Saturday Australian/New Zealand update forward a day early as since last Thursday everything has buggered up and updates have been randomly happening. Technically, I was going to put this update up last Sunday but I ran out of time and as I've found out, I couldn't have done it anyway because it turns out there was an absolute shitload to cap from Nude Study and it's taken much longer than I expected. Anyway, it's technically early...

Today's update features the movies of independent underground director Stefan Popescu, who has made 3 movies including a couple made in the icy cold climes of the Yukon Territories although they are technically still Australian movies.

His first movie was the 2006 grimy kitchen sink drama Rosebery 7470, made in the titular Tasmanian mining town focusing on a very fucked up family. Alison (Alice Ansara) plays a mentally stunted teenage girl who wears nothing but pajamas and is abused from all angles including her own family. Daddy is in an incestrous relationship with Alison's sister Sophie (Sara Cooper) and Mummy copes with her own dalliance and her pills. Then Sophie rejects Daddy and he can't take it so he blows his brains out. Sophie can't cope so she leaves home and Mummy ups her pill intake but Alison starts to come out of her shell. Then Mummy drops dead and Alison copes by becoming more 'normal' and then she comes across the aggressively horny Keith, who's sick of the town 'sluts' and wants someone 'pure'. She succumbs to his 'charms' but is physically sick at performing sexual acts which frustrates Keith further. A very strange movie but is also a fairly straightforward kitchen sink drama with a mix of horror images and Popescu sure love putting chemicals on film (see also Nude Study where characters are seen doing it). It's intriguing to a point but the ending is a bit ridiculous and you have to believe that a certain character is someone else until it is revealed who they really are, which only works if you haven't figured it out earlier.

Nude Study is a 2010-2012 drama where an Australian woman Sarah (Jackie Alixander) becomes pregnant after a one night stand and then she miscarries. She tries to cope by visiting her parents but her mother is dying and she hasn't been told. Her mother dies and she decides randomly to go to the Yukon Territories to do a film project. Sarah (now Victoria Moss) arrives in Dawson City and quickly finds a place to live and a job after flashing her breasts (!) and decides on what her film project will be: a nude study. A local woman Lyndsay (Kathryn Foran) is reluctant at first to be nude on camera but comes around to it and becomes close with Sarah even though she's married albeit unhappily. Then a series of events occur which causes a ruction in Lyndsay's life and forces her closer to Sarah. Interesting movie, a lot less grimy than his first movie but no less dramatic and has a shocking ending which ends up becoming too unrealistic (there's two rape scenes). The central relationship feels pretty real although it took me a while to get my head around the change of actress for the lead character. I thought it was a different character for a little while. Plenty of nudity too.

I capped Nude Study from a screen recording I made 4 years ago, so it's been a long time coming but I gotta say it might be the best recording I've ever done. The videos have come out quite well and in HD. I'm pretty thankful for that as I've only ever seen the movie in this one place and doubtful it'll become available elsewhere being a 10 year-old underground movie.

Vixen Velvet's Zombie Massacre is a 2016 zombie mockumentary where wannabe Audrey Hepburn-type actress but actual porn star Vixen Velvet (Kathryn Foran again) is making Zombie Gangbang II and absolutely hates it, particularly as she thought that her and the director Hector were going to make a 'legitimate' movie. Vixen leaves to pursue a legitimate career but is forced back in by Hector's sister Vera and her trusty axe. They drive to a cold clime in the middle of nowhere to shoot Zombie Gangbang III but this time with the help of 'totally not gay' camera operator Wolfe they plan to steal the video, shoot their own scenes while Vixen tries to stall the sex scenes so that they can make the perfectly legitimate Zombie Massacre III and she can show her son that she's not a 'whore'. Oh and there's a COVID-like pandemic breaking out and the vaccine is apparently turning everyone into zombies (um... yeah, prescient). Now thanks to the zombie outbreak, Vixen may have her perfect ending to her movie if only they can get out of town before it is firebombed into oblivion while avoiding Hector and his now zombie sister. Big departure from the previous movies to a more straightforward zombie genre movie with a bit of porn parody mixed in. Takes a while to get going and the surprisingly all action ending is pretty good. The porn parody/legitimate actress plot is a bit hacky, not helped by a bizarre gay conversion sub-plot. When this movie sticks to the zombies it's on much safer ground.

I bought this movie on DVD fairly cheaply a few years ago but I found a Bluray rip of it so that DVD remains unopened. Great purchase! Also Kathryn Foran's nude scene in the movie is just a replay of the scene from Nude Study which is billed in this movie as a scene from Breakfast On Tiffany.
