Update for 30 March...

A couple of movies starring Spanish actress Amaia Salamanca including a movie I've taken a while to find, Fuga de Cerebros. The movie also features and early role for Blanca Suárez, playing a blind girl who mostly speaks English throughout. I capped the sequel back in 2013 that doesn't feature any of the two leads but it's where I first saw Hannah New (looks like it was her first movie).

Update for 28 March...

A bunch of new movies for today's update, well, in the case of Without Ward more a newly released movie as it was shot in 2012 and was finally finished and released. It's a deliberately strange movie about people coping after a life-altering event. Good to see Alexis Dziena in something 'new' as it's been a while since she's been in anything. And a long, crazy-arse nude scene to boot although it's hard to top her scene in Broken Flowers and I also liked her in Fool's Gold.

Have seen the movie Hasta Que nos Volvamos a Encontrar listed under a number of names including Backpackers and Without Saying Goodbye, so as always I go with the original Spanish title. Peruvian actress Stephanie Cayo has already been in a few American movies like the silly Puerto Rican shot Force Of Nature, a crime thriller set during a hurricane starring Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth and Mel Gibson, so someone to look out for more in the future.

Update for 26 March...

Didn't really have much ready to go for the weekend Australian/New Zealand update but I've got a couple of HD reduxes ready to go. I remember Storage being a pretty decent little thriller but my main memory is I paid $37 for a copy of the DVD because I couldn't find it in local video stores. Really worth it. Good to see it in HD though. Umbrella have finally released the 80s family movie Playing Beatie Bow on Bluray and interestingly it in widescreen and a pretty decent transfer considering their DVD release of the movie was a scratchy fullscreen release. Unsurprisingly, the fullscreen version shows a little bit more in the shower scene where we see that Imogen Annesley is wearing something over her breasts.

Update for 20 March...

This weekend update features 4 New Zealand movies. Some quick synopses:

Gary Of The Pacific is a 2017 comedy about a boy who lives on one of the Cook Islands who is sent to New Zealand to get an education before he becomes chief but 15 years later, Gary (John Thomson) has failed university and is now a self-made real estate mogul, well a shit one. Then his father is dying and he comes back to the island to see his father but has no plans of sticking around until his father dies just as he's leaving the island. As soon as he hears that he has control of his father's money, he decides to take the role of chief he didn't want from his sister and then brings over his girlfriend (Megan Stevenson) to be his wife but it becomes clear that he's shit at being chief too and is spending up big on the wedding while he treads all over his sister who was getting married before her brother came back. Now the islanders have to move to a new island because the sea water has contaminated the fresh water and Gary has pissed away his father's money and the islanders have revolted against him. Can Gary save the islanders and his reputation? Weak comedy that has the major problem of trying to make an incredibly selfish man become the good guy despite pissing away all the money he was given in good faith then pissing away his father's savings. There can be a comedy made out of such a scenario but this ain't it.

The Catch is a 2016 light comedy about a man who loves nothing more than to fish with his best mate but things are about to hit the man hard. His subdivision has gone bust and he can't afford money for his son's trip. Him and his mate go looking for a fisherman who hasn't come back and find him dead from a heart attack and he's also caught a huge fish which his friend tells him to let loose but there's a fishing competition in a few days with big prize money and all he has to do is to keep it alive until then. One problem. The local shithead commerical fisherman everyone hates has seen him with the fish and extorts him so they both win the prize money. But he has to convince his honest best friend that the shithead is actually a good guy and good luck with that. Simple light comedy about friendship and fishing which is utterly predictable and strangely not a lot of fishing, particularly during the fishing competition where the winners are seemingly picked out of thin air.

Would love to tell you about 2015's Not For Children but there's so much plot in it that I think it's still being unravelled. It takes place in a number of countries including bafflingly in Benghazi in 2011 (hmm... I wonder what happened then) although the entire movie was shot in New Zealand with local actors. I tuned out after a while as there's so much explaining going on, something about a man being kidnapped, sex traffickers, a number of people dying after sex and I can't remember much else. I sure it makes sense (I bet it doesn't).

Desired is 2015 although technically 2011 drama/serial killer thriller where a prostitute (Delaney Tabron) is caught by police after her friend shoplifts and is questioned and comes across an old school friend now a cop (Dwayne Cameron) who used to have a crush on her and would like to finally get a chance to go out with her. Well, they do and she hides that she's a sex worker but that only lasts so long. The cop tries to get over it but an incident with a friend of the cop starts the sex worker on a spiral which fractures their relationship. Then someone starts killing prostitutes and the cop is investigating the case and you can guess where this is going. The movie half explains so much it's hard-to-know where it's going until it settles on the serial killer plot which is utterly predictable right down to the final second. At least when it was half explaining stuff you had no idea where it was going (neither do the filmmakers). The movie suggests that she gave up sex work for a real job but this is only one scene and then she hits a spiral and is back on the streets so fast. A muddled confused mess.

Capped Gary Of The Pacific off of a recent World Movies showing, so it's alright quality probably equal of a iTunes download. Interestingly it stars American actress Megan Stevenson as the high maintenance girlfriend and while she only has a few sexy scenes here, she's had nude scenes in stuff like Californication and the TV adaptation of Get Shorty. Also of note is that actors Ruth Wynne and David Capstick have a sex scene together in The Catch and play a couple who get married at the end of Not For Children. I screen-recorded Desired from when it available online via the movie's website back in 2017 but now it's long gone from online and hasn't popped up anywhere else, not even streaming. Lucky I did but I don't know why it's taken almost 5 years to get to it. It's a bit of mess but it stars Delaney Tabron and I quite like her. She has nude scenes in an episode of Spartacus: Vengeance and the 2015 movie Deathgasm and has a very brief side-boob scene in Desired, basically frames. She doesn't seem to haven't done much recently although she has a new movie soon to be released although even that was made a while ago. Also soon after we find out a character dies, we are then told that said actor died in real life which is a little jarring.

Update for 15 March...

Another Hong Kong movie for the 90s update, this time the 1992 comedy that turns into a drama Cash On Delivery. Starts off a wacky sex comedy where wound up tight lawyer Sandy (Sandra Ng Kwun-Yu) who is made a fool of by former singer turned nightclub owner with a penchant for antiques Simon (Simon Yam) and it turns her life on its head as she dumps her boring boyfriend and falls for Simon and he likes her back but there's one problem and it turns out to be a big one. Just before Sandy and Simon fall for one another, Simon 'auditions' to impregnate rich wife Mrs. Lau (Veronica Yip) and while he doesn't win through the audition process, she wants him and boy does she want him. So after a yachting trip where they spend most of it trying to get Mrs. Lau pregnant, Simon moves on thinking that it was just a business transaction but Mrs. Lau hasn't and wants and then stalks him, resulting in an 'accidental misfiring' a gun which kills her husband. So, SImon's up for murder and he's about to go down except it turns out Mrs. Lau is absolutely crazy as women tend to be. As I said, it starts out as a sex comedy then gets deadly serious and becomes less interesting, well except for Veronica Yip who is plenty naked plus she wears a lot of clothes where her nipple just happens to pop out regularly. Once is a mistake, a half-a-dozen times is either deliberate or there's a big problem. She really needs to find better fitting clothes...

Update for 14 March...

90s update and over to Hong Kong for Ebola Syndrome, an absolutely crazy play on The Untold Story from the same makers and star. The first half of the movie is basically a rehash of The Untold Story right down to the butchering of people and turning them into food to serve at a restaurant. Anyway, Anthony Wong kills his boss and the boss's wife he was fucking plus another guy and almost kills their daughter until he is found out and goes on the run to South Africa. 10 years later and he get Ebola after raping a Zulu tribeswoman who's dying and then kills his boss and boss's wife, finds their money, is cured of Ebola and then goes to Taiwan to live it up where it turns out that he is an absolute super-spreader and the second half of the movie is just Anthony Wong spreading Ebola all over Taiwan then Hong Kong while the girl who was lucky to get away in the beginning has grown up and just happens to run into her would-be killer and can spot him by his spell and it's up to her to help find Wong before he destroys Hong Kong. Absolutely ridiculous stuff but I found myself enjoying this way more than The Untold Story, particularly when Anthony Wong becomes a super-spreader and everything turns insane. A particularly jarring movie to watch during a pandemic, but probably the best time to watch such craziness too.

Update for 12 March...

Had an update fall through so I went to a back-up plan and came across something I hadn't gotten around to despite having it for over a decade.

Number 96 was a notorious TV soap opera set in an apartment block which began 50 years ago this week and had well over 1000 episodes and makes today's soap operas look pretty soft. Plenty of shocks and sexy stuff plus nudity, it's very of its time but it's good silly fun and full of high camp. Anyway at the height of its popularity in 1974, the producers decided to make a movie to show in cinemas, something that wasn't unusual at the time as quite a few Australian TV shows made cinema released movies. It was a huge hit, well so says plenty who'd know better than me.

Basically it's extended plots which play out over the course of a near 2 hour movie, most of which are pretty silly. There's the woman who comes back to Number 96 after being driven crazy by living in it, only to find herself having nightmares which turn out to be caused by her husband drugging her and then tries to hypnotise her into jumping off the balcony so that he can run off with a girl he met on holiday in Bali. In the meantime, his fling is sleeping with the landlord which seems perfectly fine at first but it turns out she's only doing to keep up appearances. Then there's the couple having their 40th wedding anniversary but it turns out that when they look at their wedding certificate, someone buggered it up so the wife is actually married to the witness. They get in contact with the witness to fix the problem but it turns out he's a methylated spirits drinking derelict who's also horny for her (this is in no way subtle). There's other stories like the men building a sauna in the building and it's all very soap opera and silly and is definitely fans only stuff. But that's not to say it's highly watchable and there's some stupidly funny scenes in the movie which was a surprise. It also begins with a rape scene which turns out to be a dream and can only be described as a completely bizarre way to start a movie.

There's a bit of nudity in the movie, mostly brief stuff from Elaine Lee, who on the commentary said she got paid an extra $300 to do. Not quite Halle Berry in Swordfish (pretty sure that was debunked). Also Rebecca Gilling has a number of nude scenes including full frontal nudity which I'm not sure happened on the TV show (I'm probably wrong about that). Either this or Stone was her first ever role and her character only ever appears in the movie. Lynn Rainbow, who plays the character who comes back to the building after being driven crazy by it, has a couple of sexy see-through nightie scenes and then teases taking her top off. I wonder if she had a nude scene on the show, I get the feeling she might not have.

Umbrella Entertainment released this movie on DVD plus a bunch of prominent episodes on DVD and I've had a look through all of them and will hopefully get around to releasing them soon. There's a bit of nudity throughout although in one of the sets they released there was absolutely no nudity through the 32 episodes available so there looks like there were times when the show decided to rely on plot. Boo...

Update for 5 March...

A couple of Australian movies from the late 90s for the weekend Australian update. Some quick synopses:

All The Way is a 1999 comedy where after sending off his best friend to marriage, Steve (André Eikmeier) finds out that his mother needs to pay $32,000 in a month to an evil bank manager otherwise she's going to be thrown out on the street. With the help of his friends Danny (Amos Szeps), Mike (Matt Boesenberg), Karrie (Bronwyn Jones) and Robyn (Samantha Murray), they come up with a plan to make a porn movie in 30 days and sell it to make the money. It turns out that making the film is not as easy as they thought but they luck out by gaining access to the honeymoon couples' flat to film it although the religious neighbour is keeping an ear out for them. The evil bank manager cottons on to the plan that Steve has as it turns out that his daughters are the star of said porn movie. Now the bank manager will do anything to stop them saving Steve's mother. Silly low budget comedy but a fairly competently made one that isn't boring and has a fairly funny final act. The plot isn't all that original and the porn aspect shows a strange naïveté about the industry and what is shown of the movie barely looks like something anyone would watch. Then again that isn't the point, the comedy is and while most of the comedy is a miss, it's not a complete wash. The ending has a novel's worth a writing to read which they probably could've found a better way to exhibit.

Most of the sexy stuff is done by minor characters in All The Way and most of the actors are fairly unknown although some like Amos Szeps and Matt Boesenberg have stuck around since. I remember Samantha Murray from the 1993 Western Australian set 60s comedy Love in Limbo which bafflingly has Russell Crowe and Aden Young in supporting roles after they'd broken out. She has a few sexy scenes in that movie, her only ones as far as I know. Amazingly, she's credited as the intimacy coordinator in the new Hellraiser reboot. If you follow the link, you'll also find videos of Allison Cratchley who coincidentally also has a small role in this movie. The credits off IMDB are awful and incomplete but in the movie itself the credits are surprisingly expansive with each character credited with a 'memorable' line of dialogue they said which is incredibly handy particularly when you have no idea who anyone is.

Justice is a 1998 thriller set in Perth where Bobby (Marcus Graham) is an alcoholic homeless man who begrudgingly befriends teen runaway Kat (Tessa Moncreiff) who can't stand her mother Annie's (Kerry Armstrong) latest boyfriend. After 'saving' Annie from the beating from her boyfriend, Annie seeks him out when Kat runs away again to help find her, which he does but when he goes back to his spot drunk, he witnesses corrupt cop Blake (Simon Westaway) brutally kill an internal affairs cop that is investigating him and when Blake spots him, he decides to pin her murder on him. Bobby seeks refuge with Annie and Kat but after a manhunt, he hands himself in newly sober and freshly shaved which turns out to be a big mistake. An even bigger one when he decides to represent himself. Not helped by prison guards giving him alcohol to help stifle his abilities in court and a fuzzy drunken memory of what happened, Bobby looks certain to go down for the crime until... Stock-standard courtroom thriller when all hope seems to be lost before a miraculous last minute hail mary saves the day. The plot is pretty silly and has the feel of a TV movie, I mean did nobody think to ask as to why a drunken homeless man would tie up and brutally murder an internal affairs cop in a calculated manner in an abandoned power station. Seems like a wild and unbelievable coincidence this would happen. The movie is helped by some good acting from Graham, Armstrong and the teen girl and Westaway plays a contemptible villain even when he blows his brains out immediately after being caught out in the court room. Some usual WA suspects in the cast and it's always good to see George Shevtsov turn up in something. If only the movie didn't feel like a movie of the week.

The quality of the sources are only OK but aren't too bad. I got All The Way off YouTube when it's distributor Beyond put up a bunch of it's releases free of charge (sadly no longer up so lucky I did get it while it up). It looks like DVD quality but the source is small and it's incredibly doubtful they'll be anything better as it never got a DVD release. Lucky to get that to be honest as it barely got a release on VHS. Justice is from a VHS rip and it's not too bad source either plus it's in widescreen.
