Update for 27 May...

A couple of 90s movies that are also Australian Classics including a VHS series which I haven't done in a while.

Signal One (also known as Bullet Down Under) is a 1993 thriller where American cop Martin Bullet (Christopher Atkins) kills a kid during a bust and decides it's time to move with his Australian wife Charlene (Maureen O'Shaughnessy) and become a cop in Sydney. Meanwhile, Detective Jack Moran (Mark 'Jacko' Jackson) is first on the scene of a murder with his partner Boza and in a chase with the supposed killer, his partner gets hurts badly. The actual killer is mentally impaired Frankie (Richard Carter) who panicked during a drug deal and his brother Doug (Alfred Bell) attempts to get the cops off his scent by serving up the supposed killer Tony who works for Chinese crime lord Chang Kai Chee (Kee Chan). Bullet joins Moran as his partner and they track Tony but he gets away. Tony tracks down Frankie and slaughters him while Doug continues to play both sides by giving the cops Tony again except Tony is not quite who they think he is. Fairly standard cop thriller but is surprisingly better than it has any right to be by having one helluva a twist. While the story is nothing special and the cops same old, same old, the twist adds some life to the movie that gets snuffed out with a pretty pedestrian end chase. Jacko plays the only character he can play but plays it well enough to outshine boring old Christopher Atkins and his whooping and hollering during his sex scene (yes, you read right) is fairly amusing which helps leaven the blow of seeing his arse. It's nothing special and the less said about some of the stuff in the movie, the better, but Signal One is an OK movie which is surprise considering it's from the low rent Phillip Avalon stable of films (Summer City, Fatal Bond, Tunnel Vision, The Pact, Liquid Bridge).

Raw Nerve is a 1990 (end credits say 1988) teen drama three-hander talkfest where friends David and Michelle (Kelly Dingwall and Rebecca Rigg) break into a mansion for no particular reason and are later joined by another friend Billy (John Polson), who followed them. Over the next few hours, the three will map out their issues to each other while systematically destroying the mansion. Michelle recently had a kid she gave up to adoption and has moved to Sydney to be away from her father who is ashamed of her. Billy is just angry at everything and trashes the house as his way of dealing with it. David has a particular reason he is in this specific house and he is having a lot of trouble coping with it. Will they solve their issues or will they get caught? Awful lot of talking and teenage angst in this drama, nothing particularly enlightening and mostly boring. 85 minutes feels like an eternity so there's no guessing as to why Raw Nerve is absolutely forgotten. Good to see another movie with Rebecca Rigg though and probably the closest she's been to having a nude scene so it's not a complete bust.

I definitely need to deep dive back into my collection of Australian movies off VHS as I have dozens I've never gotten around to watching let alone capping. Raw Nerve is surprisingly good quality for a VHS rip almost DVD quality. Genuinely surprised that Signal One is available in HD as the best I've been able to find before is a pretty terrible DVD release which looks closer to a VHS release. It is also in full screen which means that we see a little more of Maureen O'Shaughnessy's bottom but we see an extra shot of her breasts in widescreen. Speaking of Maureen, I should get around to recapping Love Until... where she has another nude scene along with Rachel Blakely and Dee Smart. Capped it back in the old days but never got around to redoing it. I have the DVD around here somewhere.

Update for 26 May...

Being busy elsewhere so haven't had time to do much but I do have enough time to do a quick 90s weekend update and well it's from a 1989 movie (the end credits says 1988). Whatever... Cutting Class is a pretty stock standard high school horror comedy movie but it does have an early role from Brad Pitt not long before his break out role in Thelma And Louise. He is not the lead actor in the movie, he is one of two boys (with Donovan Leitch Jr. playing a troubled kid) vying for the affection of Jill Schoelen playing the archetypal good girl. I will say that the movie has a strange obsession with Schoelen with most of the male characters lusting after her including Roddy McDowell's incredibly sleazy principal who's does things that surely would've got him locked up long ago. The soundtrack is full of Wall Of Voodoo songs, sadly not Mexican Radio and most were apparently unreleased songs. What a wild selection, almost at Wang Chung doing the soundtrack to To Live And Die In L.A level. Not a bad movie, it should've pushed the comedy aspect harder and is probably best watched as an early Brad Pitt movie where he gets to do that sensitive rebel he would frequently channel, especially in the 90s.

Update for 24 May...

A couple more TV movies. High School Lover is another stalker thriller except for one thing: James Franco plays the father of a teenage daughter and while he's appeared in TV movies beforehand, it's definitely very weird in this movie. Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer is a dramatisation of the events around him murdering his girlfriend and that wouldn't be that unusual except that Pistorius is South African and this is an American production so while the two leads seem pretty fine, the supporting cast are all over the place with the accent. Of course the movie is fairly unsubtle with Pistorius portrayed as basically Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. It's about as good as you'd imagine. There's a sex scene in the movie where it looks like you see Toni Garrn's breast which is pretty rare for a TV movie.

Have a few TV movies backed up, so better start getting rid of them. Seems like it's Manson Family week with a TV movie about their exploits. This one focuses on Linda Kasabian, who ran away from the Family when the killings started and then turned informant against them. This part of the story wasn't explored in Charlie Says and Linda barely appears in that movie. This movie focuses on the end of the Manson Family when everything goes crazy as Linda was a latecomer to the Family. For a TV movie version of the story, this isn't bad.

Update for 20 May...

Another new movie. Yay!

Daddy Issues is a drama about a doomed love triangle. Maya (Madison Lawlor) likes to draw and wishes to go to school in Italy to further her drawing but has no money and her mother and stepfather won't help. She is obsessed with social influencer Jasmine (Montana Manning), a fashion designer who is much loved but the reality is no-one is buying her clothes and she actually makes her money through a sugar daddy, Simon (Andrew Pifko), a drug-addicted surgeon with a fetish for the infantile who Jasmine has being seeing for 6 years. One night, Maya decides to track down Jasmine and introduce herself to her and over the night and the weekend, they fall for one another. When Jasmine is late to one of their sessions, Simon goes spare and starts looking for her and along the way almost hits Maya with his car. Well it turns out Simon is Maya's long lost father. Maya has a fight with her mother and moves into Jasmine's apartment where they not only continue their relationship but Maya inspires Jasmine's fashion and her clothes begin to sell far more than they ever have. Maya even rekindles her relationship with her father and he gives up the drugs. Everything is going great for all three but their is that lingering issue that's just about to ruin everyone's happiness. This movie does it's darnedest to annoy me but it manages to almost make me like it despite it's cheat of an happy ending which includes a baffling end credits segment set in another country with a character that is only mentioned as a social media friend beforehand. Daddy Issues is at it's best when the doomed love triangle unfolds and it does a good job of unravelling the selfishness of the three characters. A good movie that threatens to be better than it has any right to be.

Update for 19 May...

Well, you've probably realised I've abandoned the 90s weekend update for more new stuff.

Life Like is a drama where young couple Sophie and James (Addison Timlin and Drew Van Acker) move from their small apartment in the city to James' parent's mansion with servants. Sophie is uncomfortable with the arrangement and sends the servants away preferring to be self-sufficient but James finds it hard to keep up with the upkeep of the mansion. They decide to get help in the form of a human-like robot called Henry (Steven Strait) who is a creation of eccentric genius Julian (James D'Arcy). He is a godsend for the household but after a while Henry seems to develop human emotions including the ability to dream. Henry develops a rapport with Sophie which James becomes jealous of and attempts to thwart their interactions. This causes a rift between him and Sophie and she leaves to cool down. What happens after this will change everything and become a threat on their lives. Interesting drama that treads over well-worn ground about humans interacting with robots but is still worth a look as the story is takes a few wild turns and the relationship between Sophie and Henry is the best part of the movie. It's not without issues, the husband is a bit of uninteresting drip although one plot development eventually gives him some interest. Overall, worth a look.

Romina is a Mexican horror movie where a group of university students go on a camping trip to Crystal Lake (possibly not that one). While there, a couple of the male campers spy fellow university student Romina (Francisca Lozano) swimming naked nearby and later that night they decide to have their way with her. Next morning, Romina decides to get her revenge on all of the campers, systematically and savagely destroying each camper in a horrifically sexual way. (Deep sigh) Absolutely terrible derivative of I Spit On Your Grave that has dubious motivations for what happens and even the triggering event is highly dubious. It seems that the whole revenge plot was pre-planned beforehand, so the triggering event is unnecessary and is dubious because even that seems to be pre-planned too. And the incredibly sexual nature of the deaths is even more revolting than I Spit On Your Grave, which seems impossible; thankfully they are only revealed in aftermath. And there's very little sympathy for Romina, there's a suggestion that she may have been bullied by the campers but that isn't made clear so her motivations seem dubious. Say what you will about I Spit On Your Grave, at least it's motivations were obvious. Romina is a bad, bad movie that doesn't even have the dignity of at least being cathartic.

A whole bunch of new releases.

Charlie Says is a drama about three of the Manson Family girls, Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon) and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón), who are separated from the general prison population after their arrest for the murder of Sharon Tate and others. A prison teacher, Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is enlisted to help the girls come to terms with the crimes they have committed and try to untangle the hold that Charles Manson (Matt Smith) still seems to have on them. Meanwhile years earlier, Leslie joins the Manson Family who at that stage are just a group of people believing in free love and music with occasional visits by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson who is interested in Manson's music. Through the Family, Leslie finds a place where she believes she belongs. Dennis tees up a trial with a prominent music producer but he isn't interested in Manson's music and his reaction to this is to turn the Family into darker areas where he gets the members to start robbing houses and eventually attack and savagely kill their victims. Reteaming the writer and director of American Psycho, Charlie Says is a fairly mild look at the Manson Family, mainly going over old ground with the slight difference that some of the focus is on what happened to some of the girls after they received life sentences for their crimes and even that doesn't feel conclusive. Not bad but hardly essential.

My Days Of Mercy is a drama where Lucy (Ellen Page), who with her sister Martha (Amy Seimetz) and her younger brother follow around anti-death penalty activists joining in protests. This is mainly done as their father (Elias Koteas) is condemned to death for killing their mother and they are convinced that he did not do it and are desperately trying to save him from his upcoming execution. At a protest, Lucy catches the eye of an opposing protestor Mercy (Kate Mara) and they begin to strike up a friendship that becomes far more. Despite their different positions on the death penalty, their relationship blossoms but with her father's death looming, Lucy is looking for comfort and Mercy's standoffish behaviour may be a hindrance to their relationship lasting. OK movie that attempts to show that people with opposing beliefs can attract but I couldn't work out Mercy's continual role at these protests and why she kept turning up. The relationship angle of the story is well done although the movie tacks on a happy ending it doesn't seem to deserve. Not bad but nothing special.

Update for 13 May...

The 90s weekend slides into Monday with 4 more movies. Was going to do four yesterday but decided to do a couple more today. Always heard bad things about The Two Jakes, not as good as Chinatown mostly, but I gotta say it's a fairly decent movie, intriguing albeit a bit confusing and Jack Nicholson is always great. Sure, it's not as good as the original and it would be interesting to see what the original director Roman Polanski would have done with it but it's perfectly fine companion piece.

Speaking of quality, Fair Game has always had a bad reputation and well, it more than earns it. It is quite obvious that there was a lot of mucking around done just to make the movie work in some way, but the plot is silly and manages to get more ridiculous the longer it goes. Basically, some Russians want Cindy Crawford's lawyer character dead for reasons so perplexing that if the Russians just ignored her, they would've got away with what they were doing. Billy Baldwin's cop character helps her escape but the Russians have a hacker that can find them whenever they use any sort of technology, the type of thing that's only possible in movies, especially in mid-90s movies. Anyway, after evading them for a while, the Russians take a wild stab in the dark and wouldn't you know it, they find Cindy and Billy on a train and take her. Hang on, weren't they trying to kill her? Wouldn't you know it, Billy tracks down the Russians on a boat in the middle of the sea and manages to stop their plan and save Cindy. So much bad stuff happens throughout the movie that it's better to just enjoy the silliness than to try to make sense of it. And the only reasons to watch the movie is for the not bad action scenes and for those fleeting glimpses of Cindy's breasts including during a most preposterous sex scene. Also something I didn't know is that Salma Hayek turns up in a couple of scenes as token hotheaded Latina. Apart from that, the movie is best forgotten because if I get started, I could go for another 5000 words or so and nobody wants that. Fair Game is beyond awful, let's just leave it at that.

Update for 12 May...

The 90s weekend update has a couple of early 90s Teri Hatcher movies, both pretty much forgotten. I thought Brainsmasher: A Love Story was a fairly OK movie but it is clearly a B-movie and survives for the most part on Andrew Dice Clay's likeable charisma although I would say that Teri Hatcher's character is the main focus of the movie. Clay does well with limited comedic material to work with and is fairly convincing as a hard as nails bouncer. The story is monumentally silly with a pretty simple plot, barely enough to fill 90 minutes but there are plenty of worse movies to watch than Brainsmasher: A Love Story. Dead In The Water is apparently a TV movie and if that's true then it is the very rare dark comedy TV movie. Basically a noir story about a lawyer (Bryan Brown, he really could never do an American accent) who is sleeping with his secretary (Teri Hatcher) and they set up a plan to kill his horrible wife which, of course, doesn't go to plan. Hatcher barely in this movie and while the movie is OK, it's nothing you haven't seen a thousand times before.

Amazing to think that the long forgotten Dead In The Water is available in HD (not in the greatest quality, it is very dark) but something like Heaven's Prisoners is barely on DVD. And speaking of 90s movies with a naked Teri Hatcher, it'd be nice if The Cool Surface was available in HD too.

Update for 9 May...

More new movies both starring Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriguez. Some quick synopses:

Miss Bala is a remake of the 2011 Mexican movie, this time about an American make-up artist Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) who visits her friend in Mexico to help her get ready for the Miss Bala California beauty pageant but after a drug cartel attacks a nightclub where they are at, Gloria gets separated from her friend. While looking for her friend, she gets caught up with the cartel involved in the shooting and is forced into being a drug mule while being closely tracked by the DEA. Haven't seen the original but this movie plays like a pretty stock standard action thriller that is better and much more tense when the action stops. Rodriguez is pretty good and there's a hint that the makers want to make a franchise with her character which seems to cancel out most of the character's ordeal. OK, I s'pose.

Someone Great is a girly drama about three friends who all work through relationship issues while trying to get tickets to the hottest event that is happening that night. Very girly, not for me...

Update for 7 May...

A bunch of new movies in today's update including finishing off a couple of movies I capped on the Australian/NZ actress part of the site. Some brief synopses:

The Last Summer is a teen drama about a group of people who have just finished high school and are living out the summer before they go to college. Fairly engaging and not a bad little movie. Netflix have been picking up the slack where teen movies have mostly been abandoned by cinemas and here's another good one.

Tell It To The Bees is a drama about a doctor (Anna Paquin) who helps a mother (Holliday Grainger) and her son when they have trouble making ends meet by letting them stay at her house. Over time their friendship turns to love which is not accepted in 1950s Britain. OK, I guess.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is about the capture and trial of serial killer Ted Bundy told through the eyes of both Bundy and his girlfriend (Lily Collins). Well made and told movie, more a procedural focusing on the main televised court case than focusing on the brutality. Both Zac Efron and Lily Collins are pretty good surprisingly enough.

We Are Boats is a hippy-dippy drama where a woman (Angela Sarafyan) is murdered but she is reborn as a person who makes sure things happen as they should, an angel in a way. As she weaves a complicated web through a number of lives, she continues to pine for her daughter who she never got to say goodbye to and is forbidden to contact. With my cold, cynical, perverted heart it took a long while to get into this movie but I must say that the longer it went, the more riveting it became. Yeah, it's obvious, manipulative and idealistic but I didn't hate it. Weird...

I didn't watch Back Fork so I won't give a synopsis.

Update for 6 May...

As promised the Silent Night remake from 2012, a remake mostly in name as this movie has a completely different plot to the original. Sure there's a Killer Santa on the loose but this movie just gets straight to the killing with little explanation as to why when the original movie was basically an origin story. This time we follow the cops trying to catch the Killer Santa, mostly Jamie King as a reluctant persuant. Basically the movie is a stalk and slash thriller for it's entire run time and has a pretty decent number of kills even if they are rather methodical and not that inventive. There are some brief homages to the original, the most obvious being the girl getting impaled on the deer antlers. Sadly, even that is pedestrian compared to the original killing. OK movie but nothing the sizzles like the original. And points for lengthy Cortney Palm nude scene even if that's the only nudity in the movie.

Update for 5 May...

The rest of the Silent Night, Deadly Night series is a complete mixed bag. The third movie basically sticks with the stalk and slash plot and is utterly boring for it. Turns out anyone can be Killer Santa Claus including someone irrelevant to the first two movies who can magically dream what the killers of the first two movie did. Yep. At least it has a good nude scene from Laura Harring looking pretty damn good here and the plot of a blind person who can view other people's dreams isn't the worst idea under the sun. If only they focused on that and not the boring stalk and slash stuff.

The fourth movie is where noted horror nutbag Brian Yuzna (The Re-Animator series including Beyond Re-Animator, Return Of The Living Dead 3, The Dentist, The Dentist 2, Beneath Still Waters, Rottweiler are just some of his movies I've capped) joins the franchise and well, he certainly puts his touch on it because this movie is very, very different. Basically, a rookie journalist (Neith Hunter) sees the strange death of a person by spontaneous combustion and decides to investigate and this leads her to a group of witches who want to make her their next queen. No stalk and slash, no Killer Santa Claus and barely a mention of Christmas but this movie is not bad. It's the typical Yuzna movie, lots of nutty body shock scenes and special effects and general mayhem plus the bonus of a completely bizarre Clint Howard character role. I quite like this movie, sure it's not a Silent Night, Deadly Night movie, but it's still worth a look.

The fifth movie is another Yuzna production but not as director this time and basically it's about a toy maker (Mickey Rooney, yes the Mickey Rooney) who makes toys that kill people, well sort of, and he sets his focuses on one family. This movie has a few fairly fucked up scenes and it has an ending so bizarre it has to be seen to be believed including an attempt at toy rape (?!) and a scene where Mickey Rooney just walks into a house and kidnaps a kid, which is just shocking. What the fuck was that? And then there's the character who is never explained why he's even in the movie or why the mother instantly fucks him. No idea why he's in it; there's even a joke at the end to this which suggest this is very deliberate. And let's not forget Neith Hunter and Clint Howard just bafflingly reprising their roles from the previous movie with no mention as to why they are back. Just a bizarre movie all round and probably the most uncomfortable of all the movies including the horrifying first 30 minutes of the original.

And wouldn't you know it, they actually remade Silent Night, Deadly Night fairly recently so I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow.

Update for 4 May...

The 90s update is actually an 80s update as over the weekend I"m going to go through the Silent Night, Deadly Night series. This is my first time watching this series, I'm pretty behind on these things it seems.

The first Silent Night, Deadly Night movie begins pretty solidly and has a couple of fairly decent scares and seems to promise a fairly harrowing ride then it gets to the little boy becoming an adult and instead it turns into another stalk and slash movie with a heavy dose of sleaze. It has a fairly decent body count and some good kills but it feels like a slight letdown considering how good the opening half hour is. Anyway, it's still the best in the series and by a long way considering the weird and wild places the series ends up going to. The second movie is basically like a number of horror sequels of the period that basically replay the first movie before adding a new bit at the end (Friday The 13th Part 2 is first one that comes to mind). The first 40-odd minutes is taken up with this replay before we follow the brother of the original Santa killer who was only a kid in the original and turns out to be a psychopath just like his brother and the last half of the movie is basically the brother just going around killing people. Very little plot and nothing more than a bunch of pointless kills. A very poor follow-up.

Another new movie, another addition to the I Spit On Your Grave franchise.

I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu is a follow-up to the 1978 original where the survivor of the horrific event Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) is now making a living writing books and going on speaking tours about what happened 40 years ago. After Jennifer catches up with her international supermodel daughter Christy (Jamie Bernadette), they are kidnapped by a couple of rednecks, Kevin (Jonathan Peacy) and Scotty (Jeremy Ferdman). They are driven back to the town of Jennifer's ordeal where they meet up with Becky (Maria Olsen) who was married to the leader of the gang that raped Jennifer. Well, Becky wants revenge for her husband and wants to torture and kill Jennifer but has no use for Christy, so she sends Scotty away to get rid of her. Of course, Scotty stuffs up and Christy tricks him and steals the car and drives back to town to pick up her mother who has herself tricked Becky and co. and made her escape. When Christy arrives back in town, she finds something horrific but that is only the beginning of her hell as she's about to relive what her mother went through 40 years previous. Will it end in the same way? I still haven't seen the 1978 original and I didn't know that this movie was a direct follow-up to that movie made by the original filmmaker and not another of addition to the remake franchise until I started watching. It doesn't really matter as if you've seen any I Spit On Your Grave movie, you know that the formula is well and truly set. Then I see that this movie is 148 minutes long, which I thought was a mistake but no, this movie is absolutely that long and feels like an eternity before it ends and it takes forever to end. Basically the first 50 minutes is spent with Jennifer which has some interest with Camille Keaton reprising her character from the original. Then the rest of the movie is just a standard I Spit On Your Grave movie that goes on and on and on, hell it's probably still going. Oh man, this is a fans only movie if ever there was one as another I Spit On Your Grave movie is as necessary as syphilis.

Update for 1 May...

Some new movies for today's update. Some quick synopses:

High Life is a sci-fi drama about a group of prisoners who are sent into space to participate in a reproduction experiment run by a shonky doctor (Juliette Binoche) who forces a pregnancy onto one of the prisoners (Mia Goth) but when a radioactive storm hits the spaceship, all but one man (Robert Pattinson) and the child from the pregnancy survive and have to make the most of their time on a failing ship. Not much happens and there are a few scenes which are pretty disturbing but there are some interesting things, mostly when the prisoners are all together. A tough watch but worth a look.

JT LeRoy is a drama based on the true story about an author Laura (Laura Dern) who finds success in writing about a real life troubled boy called JT LeRoy except she's made him up. There's some interest in the literary community in JT so Laura decides to run with the idea that he's real but is having trouble convincing people he is. When her husband's androgynous sister Savannah (Kristen Stewart) moves to New York, Laura thinks she's perfect to be the real JT and convinces her. Over the next few years, Savannah plays JT for the literary and movie scene while kept under a tight leash by Laura until cracks start to appear in the facade. OK movie although it seems to end abruptly without much explanation into how they where found out.
