Update for 25 August...

Some new-ish 80 minute independent New Zealand movies. Some quick synopses:

Tomorrow I Quit is a drama where a French woman (Géraldine Creff) living in New Zealand finds out her landlord has a spy-cam in the bathroom of the communal bathroom and steals the tape and runs away. The only person she knows is her half-sister (Claire Van Beek) who she is estranged from, so she gets in touch with her through their mother and the French woman is allowed to stay at her sister's house with her boyfriend. They all seem to get along but the landlord tracks the French woman down and tragedy strikes. OK movie, the lead character is a total flake, basically a drifter and it's hard to like her but it's not a bad movie.

Spring Interlude is barely a movie where one woman chats to her friend but decides to go back to work rather than go off with her. On her way home at 1am, she meets a lost man wandering the streets and she speaks to him and then helps him out to the point where she lets him stay at her house for the night. But, he snores, so she doesn't get much sleep. He leaves in the morning and she goes to meet her friend and they have their first romantic moment. That's it for plot, it's basically lengthy conversations that I don't remember much about.

Hang Time is a movie about a groom who's bride-to-be walks out on him days before the wedding so his friends (including Gemma Knight) decide to have a blow out party instead of the wedding. They are joined by the bride's brother, who wasn't told about the wedding being abandoned and his old friend's sister (Katrina George) who has a crush on him. After going on a wine tasting tour, they party all through the night and emotions boil over. Nothing much happens and the movie sometimes feels like an advertisement for the area that they are filming in. Didn't really interest me.

Update for 23 August...

90s weekend continues.

Crimetime is directed by George Sluzier, director of one of my favourite films of all time, Spoorloos (The Vanishing) and also it's Hollywood remake. He seems to have had a checkered career after Spoorloos including directing River Phoenix's last movie Dark Blood, which finally got a release 20 years later and he was also involved in the early stages of the first Resident Evil movie. He also directed Crimetime, a Britain set thriller about a rage-case actor (Stephen Baldwin) who gets a break when he plays a real-life serial killer in a sleazy crime recreation show. Turns out the real killer (Pete Postlethwaite) takes an interest in the actor's career and loves the fame, so he keeps killing while taunting the actor. This causes the actor to spiral out-of-control, so much so that his girlfriend (Sadie Frost) leaves him. The movie is OK but it gets a bit silly in the end with an ending that suggests that Sluzier got fucked over in Hollywood and he's not too happy about it (possibly about the rubbish revised ending to the otherwise solid The Vanishing remake).

I haven't seen the first two of the Snake Eater series but if Snake Eater III: His Law (a terrible subtitle) is anything to go by, it'll be low rent and incredibly sleazy, not necessarily bad things but the plot is too ridiculous for the movie to be any good. Also, for a guy who seems to able to get the job done, Lorenzo Lamas's character sure loves putting people in harm's way including getting one witness killed and using his girlfriend as bait when bikies come to scare him. The movie features Bam Bam Bigelow as one of the main villains and he's pretty fun before dying horribly while taking a piss and there's a few laughs along the way, no more than when Lamas's cowboy buddy is forced to wear absolute dogshit late 80s clothes and he looks ridiculous. Ridiculous movie but it plays to its strengths, so if you like these types of movies, you won't be disappointed.

Update for 17 August...

The wheel is still spinning and it lands on ivansxtc., the 2000 digitally filmed drama about the final days of a Hollywood producer who is trying to live life to the fullest as he is dying. Hadn't seen the movie before and it's pretty good, reminds me a lot of Bernard Rose's later movie Two Jacks, which I thought Danny Huston was playing the same character but his character dies in this movie and it wouldn't make sense. Not that has been a problem before... It also reminded me of the Australian movie, The Beautiful and Damned, also an updated adaptation of a classic novel and wouldn't you know it, the director of that movie is on the commentary track for ivansxtc. with Lisa Enos extolling it as the best movie of the 2000s (a bit much). Could've knocked me over with a feather...

This is capped from the recent Bluray release of the movie which has the original theatrical version and an extended producer's cut made by Lisa Enos that is 20 minutes longer. It turns out that the copies of the extended version on-line have no audio (but subtitles) during the extended scenes, a total stuff up and I wasn't going to cap the scenes without audio so I went back to original Bluray and on exploration, it's easy to see why the stuff-up happened as the main audio track is designed for the theatrical version. Anyway, there's an alternate version of one scene where Lisa Enos is naked and it is double the length of the theatrical version so plenty more nudity. Apart from that there's a brief scene with Valeria Golino. There's also a whole bunch of outtakes from the party scene where Victoria Silvstedt flashes her breasts a few more times.

Intriguingly, I was listening to the commentary to the movie and they come across a scene in the extended version and Enos is asked about an actress and she mentions Crystal Atkins (who's in a few scenes in the movie) and says she's Australian. So I looked into her and she doesn't have many credits but she was in a late 90s movie starring Julian McMahon called Magenta and I instantly knew who she was and that she has a few sexy scenes in that movie and that I might have the DVD somewhere around here (haven't found it yet...). Didn't realise she was Australian, so now I need to find that DVD.

Hopefully Lisa Enos's and Bernard Rose's next movie, Snuff-Movie gets a Bluray release soon. Plenty of good nudity in that movie.
