Australian/New Zealand Classics for 27 February...

Another weekend Australian and New Zealand update and a couple of fairly diverse movies. Some quick synopses:

Wrong World is a 1985 drama about a disillusioned doctor David (Richard Moir) who had dreams to heal the world but now he's done and desolate and back in Melbourne, using morphine and then taken to a rehab clinic by his best friend. There he meets Mary (Joey Kennedy), who has no interest in staying and makes a break for it, only to be caught but she is helped by David and then evade the staff. They hide out at Flinders Street Station until they are set up in a place by a friend of Mary's but then she goes missing in the night. David looks for her and finds her overdosing but instead of taking her to hospital, he tries to help her out by driving her to her sister's in the country. Oh and they bond along the way. That's pretty much it, a junkie road movie where not a lot happens but it's about the journey and for the most part, it's fairly boring and not easy to get into and David's reason for becoming disillusioned are vague and hard to have sympathy for.

Hugh & Heke is a 2007 (although listed as 2010) comedy about Hugh (Geoff Dolan) and his white family who camp by the seaside and think they have the beach to themselves until Heke (Pete Smith) and his Maori family arrive and decide to camp close to them and tensions between the two patriarchs develop quickly, so much so that Hugh draws a line that neither can cross. Meanwhile, the rest of the families seem to get along fine. Eventually the two patriarchs are forced together and you know the rest. Simple stuff with some light comedy and a fairly predictable plot but the movie is an easy watch and does its job with a minimum of fuss and an 80 minute run time.

The quality of the sources for both movies isn't great. Wrong World is incredibly obscure but Umbrella made it available on their VOD service and it's only available in Standard Definition with some of the audio is splotchy but is mostly watchable. Better than nothing. Accidentally realised I had Hugh & Heke when I was going through a stocktake of what I had, having no idea what it was but it must've got released on DVD in Australia and I got it at some stage. The DVD is fairly ordinary quality, very interlaced and there's not much I could do but again it's about the best we'll get unless some magical HD version becomes available.

Update for 24 February...

Some new/new-ish Spanish movies including a couple of movies starring Ingrid García Jonsson. Sadly, the only copy of Yo, Mi Mujer y Mi Mujer Muerta I could find is not great, it gets a bit choppy at times, which you'll see in the videos below. I've found other copies of the movie but it looks like that it was all sourced from the same original, possibly via screen capture (it feels like this because I've done it myself too many times). Ingrid also has a nude scene in Love Me Not but all the copies of that movie are long gone and good luck getting it reposted.

Update for 23 February...

A quick update from a new Australian movie.

Bafflingly, Rage is a 143 minutes long (one of the longest Australian films ever by my reckoning), an incredibly long revenge thriller about a couple who are rocked by a home invasion gone wrong where the wife (Hayley Beveridge) was raped, her sister murdered and the husband, who bashes one of the home invaders to death, gets shot multiple times and miraculously surviving after a 39 day coma. The cops (led by a character played by Richard Norton) are clueless, the wife refuses to speak to anyone including her husband despite seeing her rapist and the husband gets itchy for revenge. After a while, the wife spots someone who she thinks was her rapist and the husband sets in motion a plan to kill the man but it doesn't quite go to plan and then things get worse. No idea why this movie had to be almost two and half hours, not a lot happens for a long time in the movie before it all comes together in the last half hour. There's a sub-plot which introduces a character who comes in and out of the movie only to set-up another guy he doesn't like and set-up a red herring. There's stuff with a psychiatrist (Tottie Goldsmith) who just happens to be married to the lead cop that goes nowhere. And then the ending is pulled out-of-nowhere, which sorta works well put there's an awful lot of set up needed to get there. The movie isn't bad but it surely could have been done in under two hours.

Australian/New Zealand Classics for 20 February...

That time again with a couple of movies I've finally gotten around to capping/watching.

Fistful Of Flies is a 1996 teenage girl coming-of-age drama where Mars (Tasma Walton) is constantly horny and can't help touching herself which drives her typical Italian mother Grace (Dina Panozzo) to despair. This isn't helped by Mars declaring that she never wants to get married. After being caught masturbating when she fakes an illness to skip out on church, Grace gets Mars' father Joe (John Lucantonio) to whip her, which he does quite badly, leaving bruises over her body. Mars seeks solace with her cast out grandmother (Anna Volska) who hasn't spoken to Grace for years. Grace becomes obsessed with stopping Mars from becoming horny; forcing her to go to confession, taking her to a doctor (Rachael Maza) to get her fixed and finally setting her up with the boy down the road Eno (Mario Gamma) who isn't interested until he sees her rebel against her mother. Also, Joe is having an affair with Magda (Maria Venuti), Eno's mother. But after her father mistakes Mars being friendly with Eno as something more, all hell breaks loose and a series of events will occur that may unexpectedly end up bringing Mars and Grace closer together. Not bad drama with some fairly ridiculous and melodramatic scenes that go about highlighting the Italian-Australian experience and the obsession with making girls 'pure' for their husbands. This isn't helped by Grace's rather extreme sexual repression which ends up having the opposite effect on Mars. The movie isn't a serious look at a culture, despite some harsh moments, more an absurd look at the old culture struggling to hold a youth in revolt. There are some funny scenes and some outright ridiculous scenes which are done fairly well but they don't mix well with some of the more harsher moments like when Mars is brutally beaten by her father in one scene and then later forced into a chemical bath to scrub her 'horniness' from her. Those scenes seem at odds with the overall tone of the movie which is much lighter. Otherwise, the movie is fairly watchable and both Tasma (in her movie debut, I think she may have started on Blue Heelers before the movie though) and Dina Panozzo (in a role she would become typecast for) are very good.

Finding a decent, or at least a passable copy of Fistful Of Flies had become a long term chore for myself so I'm glad to finally be able to at least tick it off that I've capped it. I'd been able to find copies of it, just not passable quality, some real rough ones in there too. It was never released on DVD and the VHS was very hard-to-find and the rare time(s) I found one it was way too expensive. It was a movie that barely got a release back in the day, even on VHS and it's doubtful it got much of release outside of Australia. Anyway, this is from a fairly decent VHS rip of the movie and considering the movie is 25 years old, it's quite possibly the best we're going to get for Tasma Walton's nude debut. It'll do...

Heart Of The Stag is a 1984 New Zealand drama where Peter (Bruno Lawrence) car breaks down on the side of the road in the middle of the night and he walks to the nearest property where he knocks on the door and interrupts Robert (Terence Cooper) who is having sex with Cathy (Australian actress Mary Regan). Robert, a sheep farmer, lets Peter stay the night at his worker's quarters so that he can fix his car in the morning. Well, Peter makes his presence known quickly when he borrows the tractor to tow his car to the farm and Robert joins him, annoyed at him borrowing the tractor without asking but soon takes a shine to him and offers Peter a temporary job at the farm which he accepts. Peter is the friendly type, so he tries to get to know Cathy but she seems disturbed by something and doesn't socialise with the others while her mother lives in the house but is incapacitated after having a stroke. And both seem very tense around Robert. Well, it turns out that Robert and Cathy are father and daughter and he's been forcing an 'incestuous relationship' on her. Slowly but surely, Cathy brings down her guard and let's Peter in but she's still reluctant to tell him about Robert. When Peter finally finds out, he helps her escape but Robert isn't letting her go without a fight. Very good and typically depressing New Zealand drama made better by the incredibly charismatic Bruno Lawrence who always makes movies better. Has some great scenes with the titular stag who becomes a character itself particularly in the very tense finale. The movie is heavy going for the most part, Cathy is a hard character to warm to, hardly surprising being a helpless victim and it takes a long time for Cathy to be convinced of Peter's intentions. But Lawrence's guiding hand makes Heart Of The Stag well worth watching.

I got the DVD for this movie a few years ago and I've only just gotten around to capping it, which is just plain lazy. I spent well over a year waiting for the out-of-print US DVD to creep under $20 and then I pulled the trigger and bought it and then preceded to forget it. Anyway, it turns out the DVD is very ordinary quality, basically a VHS rip, worse quality than the VHS rip of Fistful Of Flies. Very disappointing but the movie was never released on DVD anywhere else (not even in New Zealand) and the movie hasn't become available to stream either, so this is it. Hopefully the lure of Bruno Lawrence will give it an eventual HD upgrade like Smash Palace got but that movie was directed by Roger Donaldson, a fairly well-known director and Heart Of The Stag isn't, so I guess we may be shit out-of-luck.

Update for 19 February...

A new movie, this time a documentary from New Zealand that is sort of not a documentary because one of the main subjects of the movie is played by New Zealand actress Natalie Medlock, who ends up playing a character after the real person left the movie after she broke up with the documentary filmmaker. Very odd and casts doubt over the validity of the movie as a non-fiction product. Ah who cares... Natalie has a few nude scenes in the movie and a number of brief sexy scenes, which is a nice surprise and there's a bunch of New Zealand actors throughout the movie, usually playing themselves and I was able to recognise Phoebe McKellar as the woman Natalie makes out with in one scene.

Update for 18 February...

More new releases. Being a while since the last Wrong Turn sequel so it's time for a reboot and to be honest, the Wrong Turn series could've done with a proper reboot because the sequels had turned into complete sleazefests and were absolutely terrible by the end. This movie starts off in a fairly similar way to the other movies but once it unveils the 'mountain people', it takes a wild turn in a different direction and instead of ugly, rape happy mutant hillbillies, they are self-sustainable people who run their own society, no less brutal, no interest in rape. The reboot is definitely better than the sequels and maybe better than the original movie but that's not to say it's without its problems. There's the unnecessary fake out ending and a whole lot of silliness regarding Matthew Modine going after his daughter particularly when it comes to the townspeople. But this is still better than anything the sequels come up with. Plus there's Charlotte Vega, who's fairly good as one of the victims who finds her own way to get through the whole experience.

Update for 17 February...

A couple of new releases from New Zealand where the female leads are pregnant.

Baby Done is comedy where Zoe (Rose Matafeo) and her boyfriend Tim (Matthew Lewis) are tree climbing arborists who have just seen another of their friends get sucked into the baby boom and they seem to be the only ones without a baby, not that they want one. Then Zoe gets pregnant just as she becomes the tree climbing champion and just as she's about to bungee jump she tells Tim that she's pregnant. Tim is rapt but they decide to not become like their friends and make a list to do a bunch of 'wild stuff' before Zoe gives birth. Then it turns out she's actually further into the pregnancy than she thought, right about the time when they stop pregnant from flying so there goes the world championships of tree climbing or flying anywhere. Zoe continues to live as if she's not pregnant but her body fails her including when tree climbing. Tim gets sucked into the pregnancy cyclone but Rose hates it and they fight and split up. Can they get back together and can Zoe get on a plane even though she's heavily pregnant. OK comedy that skirts the line of being something different in the pregnancy romantic comedy genre but is not funny or biting enough to get away with it. There's a few funny scenes, one in the delivery room is very funny but there's not enough of these jokes and it gets genuinely creepy when the guy who loves pregnant women turns up. Not bad but should've been better.

Reunion is a horror thriller where Ellie (Emma Draper) arrives at her old house heavily pregnant hoping to relax and finish her book but her mother Ivy (Julia Ormond, her second recent movie in the Antipodes after Ladies in Black) is there cleaning it out with her wheelchair bound father (John Bach). Ivy is very insistent on Ellie relaxing before her birth and also very careful to lock all the door in the house as soon as she uses them. But Ellie begins to remember Cara, her 'sister', who died after falling over the bannister after the two had a fight. Ellie sees Cara everywhere and remembers that he death was sparked by the breaking of a glass vase that she attempts to find in one of the many boxes in the house. As she keeps searching, the better her memory becomes of Cara and the incident and it leads to a number of shocking realisations that not only was she wrong all these years but that her parents were into something very disturbing. Promising movie that doesn't get out of first gear until the end and leaves with more questions than it answers with a very confusing ending. The remembrance of the incident is well done throughout the movie but there's some much searching of boxes and so much repetition that when things do get reveal, it's still unsatisfying. For the most part the movie is two hander between Ellie and her mother with only small intrusions from others but older Ellie isn't really an interesting character and Ivy is an incredibly insistent character and Ormond plays her very well to the point of being very annoying. It's a shame that a lot is left on the table and things happen that aren't properly explained, particularly in the end like why did Cara help Ellie when the incident was caused by the very selfish Ellie. Disappointing...

Update for 14 February...

90s weekend update time. A couple of nobody asked for sci-fi sequels in The Hidden II and The Second Arrival, particularly The Hidden II which is a vast step down from the original, not helped by replaying the last 15 minutes of the original at the start of the movie and then tacking on 75 minutes of a mostly uninteresting two hander plot. The Second Arrival is mostly a rehash of the original with various mentions of Charlie Sheen's character and a tacked on full frontal nude scene which is about the only thing worth seeing in the movie.

Salmonberries is a strange little movie about a young woman (singer k.d. lang) usually mistaken for a man who is looking for where she came from as she was a dumped as a baby in Alaska. She forces local German librarian (Rosel Zech) to help her but she resists but the young woman persists and after a while the two get to know one another and become friends, so much so that the German librarian tells the young woman her story of survival from East Germany. The young woman decides to buy them tickets to Berlin just after the Wall has come down and revisit her past. Interesting movie, not a lot happens but there's some great scenes particularly when the German librarian tells her story. Something a little different.

Update for 13 February...

Two 1990 movies in today's update, one Australian movie and a New Zealand/Australia co-production made in New Zealand. Also the answer to the question what was Scottish actor John Hannah's first film role. Bafflingly, it was an Australian movie.

Harbour Beat is a thriller where rogue Scottish cop Neal McBride (John Hannah) ruffles too many feathers so he's dumped down to Sydney to continue his career. Lance Cooper (Steven Vidler) is a rogue Sydney cop who's dedicated to the job and has just seen his previous partner Gavin (Gary Day) retire early bitching about cops not getting much and becomes an independant contractor. Neal and Lance are forced to work together and check out a case that hasn't been cleared where drugs were hidden in house. Neal manages to get into the house by posing as an architectual expert and checks the place out and ends up getting a massage from the owner Simone (Angie Milliken). She also shows him that there's been plenty of interest in the house, particularly from a company called De Santos run by scummy land developer Andrew De Santos (Toni Poli). Neal and Simone hit it off and start going out together while Neal and Lance seem to get along fine to begin with but tension grows between the two when it looks like Lance might be involved with De Santos. Lance also finds out that his former partner is less than perfect with his wife leaving him which he finds out is because he hit her and he seems to be doing dirty work for De Santos. And things are about to get further strained when they confront De Santos and he runs Neal over and then Neal gets arrested for having drugs at his house. Lance begins to realise that Gavin is neck deep in it and decides to get evidence of this but while faking that he'd like a little extra money working for De Santos, Gavin shoots him and leaves him for dead. With Neal in jail and Lance in a quandary, it's going to take a lot to get out of this mess.

Ridiculous cop thriller clearly aimed at the American market and looks less plausible than the very similar Signal One. The plot meanders all over the place, it's hard to keep up with what is the plot and what's just busy work to get the movie up to 90 minutes. And the bad guys are really shitty people, De Santos gives his wife heroin for some reason, possibly a convenient excuse for the cops to get info from her while former 'good cop' Gavin is just a real shithead, beating his wife and attempting to murder his former partner. Very little plausible happens throughout and the criminal plot makes no sense, something about storing drugs in houses or something, I don't know. If it wasn't for the Sydney backdrop it would hardly be considered an Australian movie there's little to distinguish it from every other American cop thriller. About the only thing going for it is the two leads are pretty good, particularly Hannah who would go onto far bigger things. Vidler also still acts from time to time but would also go on to direct the Australian movies Blackrock and recently Standing Up For Sunny.

The Returning is a horror movie where reluctant lawyer Alan Steadman (Phillip Gordon) learns of the death of his grandfather and then in the will is given all of his estate, much to the chagrin of this father (John Ewart), who's looking for any excuse to get it. After a drive to the country, he comes across an abandoned house and Alan decides then and there to give it all his grandfather's money to charity and quit being a lawyer just as his friend/on-off lover Jessica (Alison Routledge) is made partner. Alan moves into the house despite a rather cold welcome from the local priest (Max Cullen) and a truck almost running him over and on his first night there he has sex with a ghostly woman. He starts to ask around about the house and local George (Jim Moriarty) helps a little while the priest is also helpful in a very unhelpful way. One day when he asks Jessica to stay over at the house, Alan stops dead in the dam where he was swimming only for Jessica to save him. Then that night, he has sex with the ghost while in bed with Jessica and then when she 'wakes' him, he runs off naked from the house and goes missing. Jessica calls George to help find him and they eventually find him up a tree near the dam in a stupor. His father and confidantes look for a way to get the estate back from Alan and find one through his catatonic mother and then they find out about his behaviour. Jessica catches Alan again having sex with the ghost and confronts him but he won't tell her who she is. Alan's behaviour is now bordering on unhinged but he finds the ghostly woman's diary in a branch up the tree he was found in and finds out the truth about her. All comes to head on the 100th anniversary of her death and not many will be spared. A very New Zealand look at the haunted house genre, very depressing and moody although not at all scary but it has something a little different with the ghost sex angle which is a strange fit for a deadly serious horror movie. Not a lot happens for a long time and when it does, it comes quickly with a fairly devastating ending but it takes forever to get there as the movie meanders in the middle third with repetition and a rather dodgy priest character who bumbles around stringing Alan along. There's other odd things like the relationship between Alan and Jessica which is ill-defined, they seem to be very casual but then she has a baby who seems to be fatherless with no suggestion that Alan's the father and no interest in being the baby's father. I don't know what to make of this movie; it's hard to tell why Alan is under the spell of the house and the ghost who seduces him. The ending is very sudden and depressing, it's strange seeing it happen because you're so used to seeing American movies go in an opposite direction. I think there's something here, I just don't know what...

Should say that Harbour Beat is capped from a VHS rip of the movie I've had sitting around forever and finally gotten around to capping it. It's actually fairly decent quality which was a nice surprise. Also didn't know about the nude scene from Angie Milliken, who by my count had nude scenes in four 90s movies (see also Dead Heart, Talk and What I Have Written). The Returning is capped from a Spanish DVD so the quality is usual DVD quality. Sadly no nudity from Alison Routledge with the sexy ghost being played by Jenny Ryken, who apparently only ever appeared in this movie.

I still have a number of movies off VHS rips that I've had for up to decade and just haven't gotten around to capping. Hopefully I will do so on future Saturdays.

Update for 6 February...

Been trying to do some Australian and New Zealand movies recently because I have a whole slew of them that I just haven't gotten around to capping/watching. So I've decided to make one day a week, probably Saturdays, to capping at least one Australian/New Zealand movie. So here we go with today's update with one New Zealand movie (Desperate Remedies) and a bunch of New Zealand short movies including Anna Hutchison's debut nude scene(s).

Desperate Remedies is a 1993 costume period drama where a prominent clothes maker Dorothea (Jennifer Ward-Lealand) goes to the docks to look for a man and finds newly arrived Lawrence (Kevin Smith) and gets an urchin to give him a business card with the message to come see her. Turns out that Dorothea has an underage sister Rose (Kiri Mills), whose become opium addicted thanks to her flamboyant beau Fraser (Cliff Curtis) and Dorothea has decided to find her a husband and get rid of Fraser. Meanwhile a local MP, William (Michael Hurst) has a massive business proposition for Dorothea involving making uniforms for 4000 soldier but the deal hedges on her being married which William offers his services for a marriage of convenience. Turns out Dorothea is secretly in love with her business partner Anne (Lisa Chappell) and the deal is looking good despite having to get married. Lawrence arrives and finds out he's to be Dorothea's husband and he reluctantly accepts but he becomes enamoured with Dorothea. Dorothea tries to buy off Fraser and get him to go on the next boat to San Francisco but he wants more and strings her along also he actually loves Rose, who is now forcibly getting off the opium. All this has to go down in two days and it's not looking likely. Incredibly camp movie, massively camp, theatrically so, that is very sexual despite being discreet about sex and nudity with both straight and homosexual relationships and is full of garish sets and costumes and bold, loud music. The story is pretty predictable stuff for a period drama but it's never boring and strangely alluring, much more than I was expecting. And amazingly Cliff Curtis, ususally a tough guy/menacing actor is the campest of the lot. A slightly different look at the period drama.

Also I recommend the short film Honk If You're Horny, a pretty funny short film about a tall story told by a taxi driver. It's easy to find online (I found two different copies). It features Luna Rioumina, who had a nude scene in Spartacus: War Of The Damned.

Update for 3 February...

A couple of new Australian movies, actually both movies have just been released in cinemas locally.

High Ground is a thriller where a group of officers led by Travis (Simon Baker) and Eddy (Callan Mulvey) and some locals commit a massacre of local Indigenous people including woman and children while Travis shoots dead the locals who were doing most of the killing. He pulls out a young child hiding under water and brings him back to the local mission. 12 years later, the young child Gutjuk (Jacob Junior Nayinggul) is now a young man Tommy and he's been asked by local police chief Moran (Jack Thompson) to help capture the leader of an Indigenous gang called the Wild Mob, Gutjuk's uncle Baywara (Sean Mununggurr) who managed to survive the massacre and wants revenge on the white man. But Gutjuk is interested with reuniting with his uncle and after a botched negotiation, he decides to join up with his uncle while the police are not far behind and are as trigger happy as ever. Brutal tale that has a pretty harrowing opening and doesn't relent with the grim atmosphere while being a pretty well told tale with some well fleshed out characters. A fairly decent but very ugly movie.

Penguin Bloom is drama about a happy-go-lucky family that takes a tragic turn when the mother Sam (Naomi Watts) falls from an unstable balcony while on holiday in Thailand and becomes paralysed. Sam becomes incredibly depressed at not being able to do the things she used to while her husband Cameron (Andrew Lincoln) attempts to look after their three boys and her. One day, the boys find an injured magpie that they name Penguin and begin to look after it. Sam isn't interested in helping but one day she's asked by one of her sons to look after Penguin and the magpie drives her crazy but slowly she becomes interested in helping the bird while attempting to find new meaning in her own life, which she does by taking up kayaking. OK family drama that lays on the obvious comparisons between Sam and bird on thick but is a pretty easy watch on the whole.

Update for 2 February...

Another lot of 90s movies. Never seen a Cynthia Rothrock movie before, so Sworn To Justice is the first and to be honest, it's just OK. The fighting stuff is pretty good but the plot is incredibly silly, something about Cynthia getting revenge for her sister's death and somehow got second sight when she jumped to avoid marauding killers, which is then abandoned to concentrate on the much more interesting one woman against an entire gang of dopey white guys plot. It's not a good movie but there's a lot worse that I've seen in previous 90s updates.

Update for 1 February...

90s weekend continuing. The Finest Hour is one of those rare genre of movies, Gulf War propaganda. Pretty stock standard military thriller starring Rob Lowe, interesting choice as he's not really an action guy and the action stuff is fine but there's an awful lot of time spent in the in between times and the plot about two friends pining of the same woman (Tracy Griffith) is incredibly poorly done. When one man kisses her, the woman goes off and gets pizza with Rob Lowe and while they're waiting, they get married. I shit you not, this is the movie. Baffling stuff... Also for some reason there's two scenes where Tracy is in the water in a white dress/shirt wearing no bra and is completely see-through and clingy, which means I get to cap something. Very ordinary movie...

And if anyone wants to tell me what the hell is going on in Strange Horizons, a strange movie that barely has a plot, just 80 minutes of rambling and something about the battle of the sexes, don't bother. I remember watching the movie earlier but don't remember anything at all. A very odd movie.
