Update for 30 July...

Another Australian Classic. Well...

Pandemonium is a 1987 movie and... I have no idea what is going on in this movie, after about 10 minutes my mind drifted and the rest is a blur, so much so that when I making the videos afterwards, I didn't even recognise some of the things that were going on. OK, I'll give it a go.

An unnamed dingo girl (Amanda Dole) arrives on a beach wearing only some improvised underpants and wanders off to a closed off building where she is spied by nutter Kales Leadingham (who else but David Argue) who follows her as she breaks into the building owned by wheelchair bound P.B de Woolf (Arna-Maria Winchester), who is angry that dingo girl is back in her life after abandoning her all those years ago. Her husband, E.B. De Woolf (Esben Storm), is a struggling filmmaker who is advertising for an actress to finish his movie when the dingo girl comes into his path and he become enraptured with her. Also boarding at the house are in sync twins (Kerry Mack and Rainee Skinner) who are incredibly horny and are desperate to be impregnated by their uncle Little Adolph (Ashley Grenville), a descendant of Hitler but he is fairly inadequate. There's also numerous others living at the building. Everyone becomes obsessed with dingo girl particularly when they find out she's a virgin but also possibly the second coming of Christ.

That'll do. The first thing I wrote had three mistakes in it so you can tell the brain fog set in early and never left. The first problem is that every character in the movie except dingo girl is incredibly shrill and highly annoying. Everything is decent to be controversial in one way or another but it's all very dull. Maybe it was more controversial in 1987 when Azaria Chamberlain was still very raw in everyone's memories but now it just seem like an awful lot of 'dingo got my baby' jokes mixed with Hitler has one ball and sexually inadequate jokes plus plenty of Second Coming jokes. More and more characters enter the fray, no idea what their point is except that the movie becomes increasingly crowded, then there's actors playing more than one character, a more annoying character than the last one. Just a non-stop barrage of nonsense becoming more unwatchable by the minute until it ends like a gunshot to the head and finally bliss. The most unwatchable Australian movie I've ever seen; no wonder it didn't get a cinema release and no distributor would touch it. Just impossible to recommend in any way. I could say that at least Amanda Dole is plenty naked in the movie but I've got it all below so you don't have to watch the movie.

As always with VHS rips, the quality is lower than DVD but I have to say that this is the best VHS rip I have seen image wise, better than a number of DVDs I've capped. Very surprised at the quality of it particularly as the movie never really had a DVD release (except privately). I will say that there is a little popping in the audio, nothing too distracting but it isn't as good as the video. I doubt there'll be a better release as the movie was barely released and as I've hopefully made clear, is a tough sell at best.

Update for 29 July...

Hey guys, girls, it's party time. Come up here, the view's magnificent, you'll bar up!

It's about time this cult classic terrible movie turned up on this website. Houseboat Horror is a slasher horror movie where a hot young band go to Lake Infinity (actually Lake Eildon) to film their next video clip with a small film crew including the hottest music video director Evans (Alan Dale) and it triggers bad memories for a local who was burned badly the last time a film crew came to town to shoot something. After killing a young couple camping and an overanxious park ranger, he starts on the interlopers as they shoot the video and party at night. Technically the second Australian movie shot of video after the 1986 movie Marauders, the movie gained a cult following based on it's absolute shittiness but on rewatch, I don't think it's the shittiness that stands out. It's actually a fairly boring slasher movie. There's long sequences where not a lot happens and there's very little tension where the murders happen that not only are the deaths not scary, they're also not funny because of their incompetence because one of the few good things in the movie is that the low-fi special effects are actually pretty competent. I'm baffled by it's cult status, it's a terrible movie with a few decent lines from Gavin Wood, a strangely decent casting of well-known Neighbours actor Alan Dale, who gets a fairly decent death scene. It's shittiness is what makes it a cult classic but the movie may be not shit enough to deserve it.

The screenplay barely makes sense which makes identifying actresses in some of the scenes below a very tough task. In a strangely similar problem to the recent Love Crimes update, all the characters are given names but they are never referred to them, including most of the main characters. I've seen some extensive synopses of the movie where they just give vague descriptions of characters to identify them it's that hard to work out. This is not helped by the lesser roles populated by unknown actors with very few roles, so identifying them is at best a process of elimination. Christine Jeston is in the promotional material and her character is called by name (Tracy) are couple of times. Peppie D'Or is a sort of known actress (I've capped her before in Melvin, Son of Alvin) and her character is called by name once (Teri) but she is listed in the credits as Teresa...

The other actresses are going to take some deduce because they are never called by name. There's three other actresses and one of them has two nude scenes. You could deduce that the higher listed actress, Julie Thompson (Tompson in the credits, because of course it's spelt wrong) is the make-up artist. So that leaves two actresses:

Just as she leaves the water naked after a swim, the character hears a noise and calls out for Susy, her friend that she hangs out with earlier in the movie. So you can make the assumption that she's Kat and her friend is Susy. So, hopefully that's right. The woman that was nude by the lake was just some stripper that the asked to come along.

My favourite fact from the movie, apart from only three people were paid for making the movie (Alan Dale, the special effects guy and music guy Brian Mannix), is that is was cast by Deborra-Lee Furness, yes, the one and the same, who cast the movie with actors from a class she was teaching.

Update for 26 July...

90s weekend update comes around on a Monday.

Remember watching Love Crimes back in the day but didn't remember much beyond Sean Young standing naked in the bathtub and the horse woman, two great things to remember. Rewatching it and am surprised that it's actually a pretty solid movie, not perfect but as far as erotic thrillers go, it's OK. It's written by Allan Moyle (Pump Up The Volume, Empire Records and a couple of movies I like: XChange and Jailbait!) and the plot is interesting and there's very little violence and nobody dies which is incredibly rare for this type of movie. Young is good while Patrick Bergin was a reliable sleazebag in the 90s. And some excellent nudity particularly from Young.

I wish I knew who the name of the actresses in the unknown videos, particularly from the horse woman scene. The credits seem to name all of the actors in the movie, so I suppose it's one of them listed but all the characters are given names even though they don't have them and coupled with limited information about some of the actresses, it's led to a some dead end. Kate Rodger's character (credited as Kathleen Rodgers) had a name despite not uttering a word but at least she's a recognisable actress. The others aren't.

Update for 21 July...

A bunch of new(ish) Australian movies. Synopses of the movies:

The Five Provocations is a drama where Marlena (Sapidah Kian) is trying to get her restaurant finished before the opening date but has run out of money. She decides to ask her friend Paul (Tony Moclair), whose wife recently died and who Marlena had been having an affair with unbeknownst to him. But before she can ask, Paul puts up an offer involving her moving in with him and his daughter to help her save money which throws Marlena and she quite disgusted by the offer. Instead, Marlena puts up an ad for a roommate and meets Bridget (Rebecca Bower) and she moves in. Bridget has her own problems as she just found out she is pregnant and the father wants nothing to do with her. Paul is in a relationship with his nanny but can't bring himself to tell his daughter Queenie, worried about her reaction after her mother's death. Meanwhile, Clinton (Blake Osborn) is a plumber working on Marlena's restaurant and misses his daughter and is annoyed that his wife is going by herself to visit her in Paris and it comes out in an unexpected way. OK drama that has weird interludes called provocations where women provocatively act around various characters at a crucial moment and I have no idea what the relevance is. The story itself is pretty basic and the story of the plumber feels outside of the main story and comes in at a time when the main plot is heating up which seems to make the main story come to a screeching halt. But for the most part the movie keeps interest.

Ashburn Waters is a horror movie where a group of old friends get back together to go on an Easter long weekend camping trip. They get to the camping ground and find that it is fully booked and they forgot to book but they hear of another camping ground nearby named Ashburn Waters where a whole bunch of people were recently slaughtered by an unknown being. When they get there, it is cordoned off and the owner wards them off but they go ahead anyway. Things are fine to begin with except for a man who seems to be stalking the place but once nightfall comes, the being starts picking the friends off one-by-one and they only way out is to kill it. Silly low budget camping horror movie, nothing new, even has the requisite nudity so you know exactly what you're getting.

Night Shift is a comedy about two brothers who need to come up with $400,000 quickly otherwise they are to be evicted from their family home. They get wind of an opportunity thanks to a dumb friend who is trying to get into the local bikie gang and it involves robbing the safe at a petrol station that is said to be full as the owner is a tightarse and can't be bothered banking it. Well, they get to the petrol station and it turns out the safe is on a timer lock and doesn't open until 6 in the morning, so they have a number of hours to fill before it opens so they decide to take over running the place which goes badly because they have no idea what they are doing. An old school teacher turns up, then a couple of women try to rob the place, then one of the brother's girlfriend arrives, then the police arrive and then the bikies come to rob the place and they aren't mucking around. As more and more people become involved, it's looking less likely they are going to get the money or survive the night. Fairly funny low budget comedy that is far funnier than I was expecting and as things escalate quickly it just leads to sillier and sillier situations. It's does have an issue or two and sometimes it's too silly and the ending wraps up very conveniently but the movie is funny enough to overcome this.

Chasing Comets is a drama set in Wagga Wagga about a rugby league player Chase (Dan Ewing) who can't help himself and cheats on his girlfriend (Isabel Lucas) constantly. She gives him one more chance but he blows it. Then his rugby career goes bad and he finds himself on the bench. One day after breaking down out the front of a church with his Aussie Rules playing friend (Stan Walker), Chase is invited in by his pastor friend and he takes to it, becoming a regular churchgoer and then deciding to go celibate to the amusement of the locals. Two brothers, one the local Aussie Rules coach and the other a B-grade Hollywood actor decide to make a bet about whether the Aussie Rules side or the Rugby League side will do better with the winner having to run nude around town. Well, the rugby league side goes poorly until Chase comes off the bench one game and plays a blinder and the team manages to resurrect their season. And he catches the eye of the new pastor (Kat Hoyos). So, which brother will have to streak around town? Written by former rugby league player Jason Stevens and loosely based on his own life, the movie is amiable enough and while it's a sports movie of sorts, there's not a lot of actual game play and there's mention of religion helping Chase but it's not overbearing. Fairly light and played mostly for fun.

90s weekend again.

The New Age is from the director of The Rapture, a great movie so I was looking forward to watching but sadly, the movie is really only skin deep in its satire of people being suckered in by New Age scams. The idea that the central couple (played by Peter Weller and Judy Davis) give up their lives and start a store only dealing in trends isn't the worst idea but it never really goes anywhere beyond its inevitable demise. It then ends with Peter Weller's character using the new age crap to run his own scam group and this movie just doesn't have the same bite as The Rapture. New Age scams seem like an easy target and this movie doesn't prove otherwise. Shame, as it has a pretty decent cast.

Update for 11 July...

A quick 90s weekend update.

Just when I thought I was running out of Tarantino knock-off, along comes another in Flypaper. Basically a circular crime story that follows a bunch of people who interact with one another over the course of a day in California. This film goes more for laughs but there's also a lot of forced strangeness, the ending especially where a character who should be dead goes on another adventure that so silly, I did wonder if I was watching another movie at this stage. And considering the movie is nearly 2 hours long, they probably could've cut that out. There's a bit of sex and nudity in the movie from Sadie Frost and Lucy Liu with Lucy's sex scene happening in a snake pit as they are getting bitten. There's just that much forced strangeness in the movie that it stops it from being all that good. But if I'm being honest, I much preferred that strangeness to the Tarantino knock-off stuff.

Update for 4 July...

Another 'lost' movie finally available in HD.

Among The Cinders is a coming-of-age drama about a teenage boy Nick (Paul O'Shea) who has become a constant worry for his parents Helga (Bridget Armstrong) and Frank (Maurice Shadbolt, the author of the book this movie is based on). After going on a hunting trip with his only friend Sam (Ricky Duff) and visiting a cursed murder house, Sam falls off a cliff edge and dies while Nick is injured while saving him. This only sends his parents more worrisome and Nick's brother Derek (Marcus Broughton), a revered poet, and perfectly normal person, suggests that this is happening because he's a homosexual! Nick's grandfather (Derek Hardwick) arrives to see Nick, much to the disgust of Helga who despises him, mainly because he believes in the 'old ways' and treats people as such. Granddad suggests that Nick should join him and his grandmother (Yvonne Lawley) for a retreat, which he does. Granddad is a handful for everyone and his grandmother suggests that Nick should just go along with his way to keep him happy. Granddad suggests that they go on a trip to go prospecting for gum and gold but they leave suddenly and Granddad seems forlorn and won't let Nick say goodbye to his grandmother. They make it to Granddad's old prospectors shack where they stay for a while.

One day, Nick spies a bathing Sally (Rebecca Gibney), who introduces herself and while NIck is shy in her company at first, they become friendly while walking around the area including doing some skinnydipping. They visit a house in the middle of nowhere and find it is owned by a famous photographer and Sally's friend Tera (Sela Apera) is there. Nick and Sally stay at the house waiting for a shoot to finish and after looking at some suggestive books, they have sex. Nick decides to leave abruptly, bring Sally with him and back at her camp he hears a news item that says that police are looking for he and Granddad. Nick goes back to Granddad and tells him and he decides to go on the run, getting some horses from a Maori man who recently lost his wife. They bunker down in an abandoned shack as Nick is getting tired of the bush and not long later, Granddad becomes gravely ill. Nick goes to town to get him his medicine, brandy, but a store owner recognises and tells a nearby police officer who speaks to Nick. So, why are the police after the two and will Granddad survive.

Strange and very much of the time drama about a boy who mostly seems normal but does show some signs of being a bit off. Not a lot happens in the movie and it's mainly about the characters and there's a few good ones in the movie. Granddad is amazing, a real throwback to when 'men were men', someone who likes to argue law cases using the Magna Carta (still bafflingly a thing! I doubt it will ever go away), who treats women as second-rate and believes a man is at his best by his lonesome. Derek Hardwick's performance is a delight, an actor who barely had any roles but had an all-timer in this movie and then died a few years later. The lead, Paul O'Shea, in his only role, is not bad in the lead, very much the feel of a first-time actor but it sorta works because he's able to be more convincing as a shy person. Rebecca Gibney is in the movie for maybe 20 minutes but makes quite an impact and it's pretty obvious she was going to be a star not long after this. I quite liked the movie, it is a very different coming-of-age story where it's hard to tell where it's going and what Nick's going to get out of it. It has a very rural New Zealand quaint feel and many of the actors aren't professional which gives it a weird authentic feel that you don't usually get and a lot of random stuff happens adding to that feel. And being a New Zealand movie, it must have a dour, depressing feel and the ending is a bit of a shock. If you're looking for something very different, this is well worth a look and you can rent it for only $3 off NZ On Demand (NZ and Australia only sadly).

While Rebecca Gibney is only in the movie for about 20 minutes, she has a few nude scenes and a decent wet dress scene. Most of the nudity is from a bit of a distance but still fairly visible. This is pretty much the only proper nudity she's ever done, so it's good to finally she it in HD as it's only ever been seen in VHS quality prior to this. I also liked Amanda Jones's scene in that dress that she's wearing. Her character was another oddity in the movie and I loved that run she does down the beach after Nick. She has another run where she follows him as he's in a row boat. Seems like a good runner...

I should note that I screen captured this movie, which isn't a perfect way to capture the movie but my first capture turned out pretty damn well, especially compared to other attempts. Very little jittering in the videos especially compared to my attempt at Middle Age Spread.

Update for 3 July...

Another batch of videos from Australian short films. Funnily enough I finally got around to watching the strange 2006 Australian/British family movie Opal Dream just last week and when I looked up what else Sapphire Blossom had been in, it turns out she played the little weird sick girl in that movie 10 years previous. Worlds apart those two roles... Slapper is worth a watch, a funny short about a horrible young woman desperately trying to get the morning after pill despite no money and growing responsibilities. I also kinda liked Opal Dream too but it's is a very odd and depressing for a family movie.

Some other quick notes: Rebecca Bower showed her breast while wearing pasties in the oddball cop show parody web series Cop Hard, which seems to have disappeared online as I was looking for it when writing the nude guide recently and couldn't be bothered finding the copy I had of it and it isn't on YouTube any more. Di Smith has a nude scene in Emoh Ruo. Shannon Ashlyn's best known role is probably as the German backpacker in Wolf Creek 2 and Emissary is her nude debut as far as I can tell.

Update for 1 July...

A bunch of new(ish) Australian movies that I've finally got around to capping/being released. Some quick synopses:

Indigo Lake is a thriller where prominent artist Jack (Andrew Cutcliffe) is asked by gangster Kazak (Marin Mimica) to paint a portrait of his wife Ruby (Miranda O'Hare). He reluctantly takes the job, mainly because he's intrigued by Ruby, who turns out to be a kept woman controlled by Kazak and with his two goons Sheyda (Nicole Verhoeven) and Twinkie (Gerard Webb), he keeps a close eye on her. Well, inevitably Ruby convinces Jack to paint her in the nude and he finally comes up with something he likes and then they fall for one another. Kazak finds out and Jack and Ruby go on the run, only to be tracked down but Ruby gives Kazak, Sheyda and Twinkie tampered drugs, knocking them out and she and Jack decide to drown Kazak in his car. Well, they're safe for about a second as it turns out Kazak actually survived and he wants the both of them dead. Fairly silly movie that starts off alright but runs around in circles until the final showdown where people in normal situations would die but it's just impossible to kill anyone apparently. Nothing special.

Pulse is a drama where disabled school kid Olly (Daniel Monks) feels left out after he finds out his best friends Nat (Sian Ewers) and Luke (Scott Lee) are together. After having a surgery to help his leg, he decides that he would like to become female and both his friends and his mother (Caroline Brazier) are supportive. It goes really well and Olly turns into the beautiful OIivia (Jaimee Peasley) and for the first time they get the attention they crave. Olivia loses her virginity to Brandon (David Richardson) but when he finds out she's trans, he loses it. Olivia really wants Luke and is convinced to go after him but it goes badly and then she goes on a bender to get over it, only for it to end with her sleeping with her mother's boyfriend. Olivia alienates everyone and her mother throws her out and she then comes to the realisation that she's a terrible person or something. Strange movie that attempts to tell the story of a disabled gay person but ends up in an unholy mess of a trans plot which is very confusing. I possibly didn't understand it but this isn't helped by the mixing of Olly and Olivia throughout the plot in the same situations and then the whole 'it was all a dream' ending feels like a real cop out. And Olivia is such a terrible, selfish person that it's hard to have sympathy for her. Desperately disappointing...

Newman is a drama where Newman (Dean Kirkright) has a car accident with a train while travelling to his new home and ends up in hospital and some memory loss. His friend Bert (Christian Heath), helps him home but he lost everything in the crash. He then is greeted by a man at the door he doesn't recognise and it turns out to be his father Frank (Jeremy Kewley), who comes to visit him often. Newman all of a sudden becomes interested in boats and starts collecting things like paintings and models with boats on them. He also starts remembering a woman he can't quite picture the face of. Newman starts back at his job and he struggles to keep up but he catches the eye of co-worker Jess (Kate Gerrard), who seems to have a big crush on him. Then he finds the woman he remembers and it turns out to be Taylor (Tamuz Ellazam) who used to be his girlfriend. They start a friendly relationship and she helps him reveals some missing pieces of the puzzle which lead him to realise that his previous life wasn't going well and that his relationships with the people in his life are not what he thinks they were. Interesting movie despite a clichéd amnesia plot but it isn't all bad and it goes to some unexpected areas. It runs out of steam towards the end with too many revelations but the final reveal of why he's interested in boats is quite nice. Not a bad little movie.
