Update for 31 May...

More Australian Classics, this time a couple of 90s movies off VHS.

Turning April is a 1995 drama about a put-upon wife April (Tushka Bergen) who is married to an ambitious political operator who is too busy with his career than his wife and daughter. April is left alone and bored so she starts doing a little shoplifting and one day she is caught by the manager but as he brings her back to the store, it is robbed by a ragtag bunch who accidentally take April hostage. The ragtag bunch have no idea what to do with her and April refuses to eat and take orders but Leif (Aaron Blabey) gets through to her and April eventually comes around. But after a few days, the ragtag bunch start to get sick of her but April wants to stay and with the help of Leif, she becomes involved in their next 'heist'. Meanwhile, her husband could care less about her and pretty much abandons her after a ridiculous hostage video is sent to him and he dumps his daughter with his father-in-law, who's probably a paedo, so good move... April and Leif fall for one another and the heist goes, well, not at all... The ragtag bunch are sick of April but she suggests one last heist of her father's place, who is a stamp collector but he's with her daughter and... Pretty much forgotten movie that barely got a release to begin with but did have the bonus of being a Canadian co-production which at least gave it a Canadian release. The movie is mostly forgettable, it doesn't know whether it wants to be serious or a comedy and fails at both. The ragtag crew is mostly pushed to the background once April and Leif get together and the husband is so selfish that he dumps his daughter with her paedo grandfather whose wife conveniently died a few days earlier. The movie doesn't seem to have a point and ends in an open-ended way. The movie just doesn't work and is unsurprisingly forgotten.

Exchange Lifeguards (Wet And Wild Summer!) is a 1992 save the landmark comedy/drama where Bobby (Christopher Atkins) is gifted a coveted role of an exchange lifeguard because his father Mike McCain (Elliott Gould) is going ahead with building a resort at Mullet Beach in Australia. Really, he's scoping out the beach so that the resort can go ahead. Once he gets to the beach, it turns out that the lifesavers and a ragtag bunch who struggle at lifesaving championships and are all doing it for nothing. Led by Mick (Julian McMahon), they are struggling to keep the beach going and local interests are desperate to make the resort happen. Turns out Bobby is a pretty bad lifesaver but he catches the eye of lifeguard Julie (Rebekah Carlton) and he gets the support of the other lifeguards after he helps them train up for the lifesaving carnival. Meanwhile, it turns out that Mike's wife Donna (Lois Larimore) has been drugging Mike while scheming with ambitious underling Richard (Christopher Pate) to make it look like Mike is not mentally capable to run the company and that they can take it over and build the resort. Well, Mike stops taking his 'medication' and realises what is going on, so he heads to Australia with his own plan for an eco-resort. The Mullet Head locals find out that Bobby is actually working against them but his father comes in time and sells them on his plan, just in time for the big surf lifesaving carnival where winner takes all and they can save the beach from the evil developers. Predictable and lifeless movie, unsurprising as it's from absolute hack Phillip Avalon (Summer City, Summer City 2: Breaking Loose, Sher Mountains Killings Mystery, Fatal Bond, Signal One, Tunnel Vision, Liquid Bridge) who's never made a good movie. No one really shines here; Atkins tries but has nothing to work with. Gould is clear pay cheque mode and has some ridiculous scenes where he acts batty. Julian McMahon barely registers and would go onto far better things. Inexplicably, the beach has a small section where it's a nude beach (aren't they usually cordoned off?) so we get a fair bit of leering and an obligatory cast gets nude scene. One scene involving dog food being puts down a man's underpants so that a dog could have a feast is so out-of-place it just feels distasteful. Avalon's movies are always terrible but at least this one has a fair bit of nudity from the main cast, even if some of it seems tacked on to sell it to an American audience. It's not his worst movie and that's saying something but it's still a very poor and lazy movie.

Of course with every movie capped from VHS rips, the quality is down but the picture is mostly fine for both movies but there was an issue with my copy of Exchange Lifeguards where in the first 20 minutes or so that audio is a bit noisy and it's noticeable in a few videos below. Maybe one day there will be upgrades, I see Exchange Lifeguards is on Tubi but it's fairly small in size. I might take a look at it though.

Update for 30 May...

An Australian Classic update, this time a couple of movies from over 50 years ago and technically even before Australian New Wave cinema began.

I'd seen Age Of Consent before, probably from a local TV showing but I didn't really remember much of the first half of the movie. Still in the stage where Australian movies were being mostly made by foreign directors, this time exiled British director Michael Powell who also directed the 1966 Australian ethnic comedy They're A Weird Mob (which I haven't seen also it's wild that movie is Powell-Pressburger production). Anyway, this 1969 film is made mostly on Dunk Island in Queensland and it's basically about a painter (James Mason) who's sick of the city decides to spend some time on Dunk Island with his dog and a bunch of eccentric locals including Cora (Helen Mirren, very early in her career) who's a sheltered, underage girl who scavenges for her awful grandmother and is skimming a few dollars from her hauls so that she can save enough to head to Brisbane and become a hairdresser. The painter decides to help her out by asking her to pose for him but her evil grandmother is one step ahead and steals Cora's stash resulting in a series of events leading to the grandmother's death. Also, a shitty friend from Brisbane decides to track down the painter and 'borrow' a bit of money from him and ends up getting more than he bargained for from one of the painter's neighbours. Not a lot happens but it has a charm to it and Mirren is very good as the innocent girl who gets a taste of life outside of the island, something she craves. Interestingly for a movie called Age Of Consent, not a lot is made about the age of Cora apart from one mention from the grandmother and that terribly sappy song over the end credits. Mirren clearly looks older than 18 and if it wasn't for those mentions, it probably wouldn't be an issue. Also love how Mirren is credited in the movie as if it was a coup; Age Of Consent was an early credit but she was clearly going to go onto bigger and better things.

The 1970 independent drama The Set was pretty much a lost movie but there was recently a remastering of the movie which I finally checked out. It's a drama about a bunch of 20-somethings who decide to make a go of it in the big city (Sydney). Paul (Sean Myers) meets Tony (Rod Mullinar) after he saves his cousin from drowning. They decide to go to the city where Paul is feted by a renowned designer and taken under her wing. He also falls for Tony, who's a huge ladies man who has a string of flings that he manages to disappoint on a regular basis (probably the one funny ongoing joke in the movie) including Paul's aunty Peg (Hazel Phillips), who's having her own marriage problems and is surveying the field while her husband rejects her. Tony is shitty towards him but after Paul attempts to kill himself, Tony relents and they begin a relationship which is only going to end badly. The movie is an early attempt at a gay relationship which isn't too bad but because this is the late 60s, it totally cops out and has Paul get back with an old girlfriend. The movie meanders a lot, usually between scenes but also during long scenes better suited to soap operas. The movie also meanders between characters, never really focusing on one for long periods of time. It's a movie that tries to break the cultural norms but ends in the safest way possible with the aforementioned Paul plus Peg crawls back to her boring, safe husband after some flings including one with her daughter's boyfriend Tony. It's an interesting movie as something a little different for an Australian movie and it's seems to have better than most but it's soap opera plot doesn't help and it's constant meandering seems to make the movie longer than it is. Even more interesting is that it's written by Roger Ward, a well-known cult actor who's still going around.

The HD remaster of The Set released by underrated distributor Bounty is a lot better than expected considering it's an almost lost 50 year-old movie. It was released about 18 months ago but I never got around to it and then Bounty deleted everything off their Vimeo site last year but have been slowly putting their collection back up, so I finally decided to grab it lest it be deleted yet again. Of the cast, Rod Mullinar is still kicking around and has had a pretty solid career onscreen particularly in the 70s and 80s but is probably better known as the king of voiceover actors in Australia. Australians will know his voice, particularly if you follow the AFL or listen/watch anything Hamish And Andy do. Hazel Phillips, one the oldest in the cast, is still alive and at 90 was in the Queensland-filmed Hollywood production Love And Monsters. Most of the rest of the cast didn't do a lot more after this.

Update for 24 May...

90s weekend continues with a couple of B-movies.

Deathline is a Euro-thriller where Rutger Hauer plays Wade a trader who is murdered with his girlfriend by his so-called right hand man Merrick (Mark Dacascos). Well, geniuses in a future Cold War Russia bring him back to life to interrogate him, only for Wade to disappear and go on a crusade to kill Merrick and get his money back. Oh and he meets a prostitute Marina K. (Yvonne Sciò) who looks remarkably like his dead girlfriend and seems to be much more than a prostitute as she's very willing to help Wade in his crusade. Silly and sleazy movie but Hauer makes it pretty watchable despite an incomprehensible plot set in a new Russia (made in Hungary, so there's the mandatory shitloads of naked extras) and Sciò seems to be having a lot of fun. Not bad overall.

Blood Dolls is another Charles Band plays with his dolls movie, this one feeling like it was made even cheaper than usual and I'd be surprised if there was a script. Basically, a freak billionaire loses an anti-trust case so he turns the judge, prosecutor and lawyer into killer dolls who get revenge on his rivals but meets his match with the wife of a rival who uses her husband as a puppet to run the company. Utterly ridiculous movie with the billionaire living in a mansion but never seems to leave a room with his humble servant in clown make-up, a dwarf helper and an all-girl punk band that is electrocuted into playing for his pleasure. The movie barely gets to 70 minutes when we are greeted with an alternate ending which is clearly only there to pad the movie out to a sellable 80 minutes. Blood Dolls is a bad movie but worse, it's incredibly lazy, looking like it was made up as it went along. Just a very poor movie.

Update for 23 May...

Haven't done a 90s update for a few weeks, so here's one.

Midnight Heat is a dopey amnesiac thriller where Brian Bosworth is a bank worker who walks onto the road without looking and gets hit by a car. Well, he forgets everything including his wife and then he starts to get fragments of memories where he remembers being the part of a prison gang. Meanwhile, that gang led by Brad Dourif helps a gang member escape and they are planning something big. Bosworth goes looking for clues and ends up calling a bar where the gang hang out and they decide to kill him, which he narrowly escapes but they kill his wife. He goes looking for the gang and with the help of a woman he comes across along the way, they take on the gang who it turns out are planning to break another gang member out of prison, which seems incredibly foolish from both sides. Silly movie, while Brian Bosworth vamps being a dopey bank worker with terrible fighting skills well enough and the movie doesn't really take itself too seriously but it's basically an inferior B-grade version of The Long Kiss Goodnight. I won't say rip-off as this movie was made around the same time, so who knows...

A couple of quick update from new Australian releases. Some quick synopses:

The Dry is a mystery thriller where a cop (Eric Bana) goes home for the funeral of an old school friend and his wife and their son in an apparent murder-suicide in his drought riddled home town. His old school friend's parents ask him to take a look at his books in the hope of finding out that he didn't do it and it draws the cop in to investigate further while he gets pushback from locals and reacquaints himself with old friends. Pretty decent thriller and an incredibly rare appearance from Bana in a local film.

Great White is a shark attack thriller where a pilot and his American wife (Katrina Bowden) get a job to fly a couple to a remote area only to find a dead body eaten by a shark. They go looking for the dead man's girlfriend and find their boat only to also find the shark who sinks the plane and they have to float all the way back in a life raft and that shark sure is hungry. Stock-standard stuff but passable as shark attack films go.

Update for 17 May...

More New Zealand movies today, three from the 2000s.

Exposure is a 2000 thriller where reclusive Gary (Ron Silver), a former war photographer haunted by the death of his girlfriend (Miriama Smith), finds a naked woman entangled in nets in his boat shed. It is Elaine (Susan Pari), who ended up in the boat shed after she jumped off the boat to get away from her abusive boyfriend. Gary helps her out and Elaine comes back to return the clothes he gave her and notices that he's has a bunch of sexy photos he's shot and Elaine is interested and they decide to do a quick photo shoot. Gary shows it to his friend Paul (Paul Gittins) and he's impressed and gets Gary to do another photo shoot with Elaine for his 'sophisticated' men's magazine IQ, which she agrees to. It's a hit but then Elaine finds herself with unwarranted attention which she puts down to her shitty boyfriend and boss Brad (Timothy Balme) until Gary finds her dead when he becomes concerned about her safety. So, it was probably Brad, but then Paul is attacked after Gary goes to talk to him and finds Paul canoodling with a model. Paul's wife Jackie (Alexandra Paul) takes comfort with Gary and Paul catches them just as they kiss and Paul thinks Gary is 'cutting his grass' after he found Paul with the model. Anyway, no problem, Paul is murdered and there's a message about an unholy trinity, so someone is going to kill a third part and it very much looks like Gary is going to be the final victim. But who is the killer and can it be the most unlikely person who you never know about until a dumbarse priest (Kevin J. Wilson) manages to work it out?

Silly murder-mystery that picks the killer out of a hat and the answer is near impossible to predict but the dumbarse priest works it out, only to get slaughtered in the most obvious way. Directed by David Blyth (Death Warmed Up, Wound, Ghost Bride, Angel Mine), no stranger to genre movies made for the American market, this movie just gets sillier by-the-minute. Ron Silver is strangely subdued and Alexandra Paul is barely in the movie until the second half where her character is hamfistedly brought together with Silver's for the ridiculous ending. Miriama Smith doesn't have much to do, playing a token South American (!) woman in her underwear or less who's has sex with Silver's character, who's has a mullet in these scenes. The movie never gets out of second gear and is probably best watched for the smatterings of nudity throughout. Good luck finding it though as I bought this on DVD over ten years ago and finally gotten around to capping it.

Have also included some videos from the 2007 movie, We're Here To Help, also starring MIriama Smith but there's not much to cap and I don't have the original movie to verify if it's all there is. I just found some scenes I chopped out of the TV showing of the movie that are dated December 2010, so it's only taken me a decade to get around to it.

To end with, I found the 2003 TV movie Skin And Bone on the NZ OnScreen site, took a quick look and was surprised to see it had a sex/nude scene, so I decided to take a closer look. Turns out that the movie is a standard country boy (Antony Starr, who I know from Outrageous Fortune but you probably know him better from The Boys and Banshee) who's about to make it big in the city who gets the rug pulled from under him and heads back home to play in the final game of the season for his old home town rugby team, which is falling apart. Except this is one of the more darker interpretations of this, actually it's incredibly fucked. One of the old team is a total psychopath who when he's not trying to knock out his captain, gets the country boy's city girlfriend drunk and forces another bloke to rape her while she's passed out. Well, the final game is an incredibly grim experience. The psychopath kicks the captain in the head and a fair amount of time goes into the local doctor (well I think he was...) thinking about drilling a hole in the captain's head. Anyway, the captain dies, the team is still 2 tries down and the country boy has walked away while the coach (Roy Billing playing Roy Billing at 200%) is sulking in the dressing room after finding out about the psychopath. Can they win the shield, give the town hope and have the most fucked ending in sporting history? Yes, probably not and pretty much. The climatic game is one of the grimmest things I've ever seen in a movie. Plus there's a whole bunch of graphic male shower scenes in the first 10 minutes and an underwear fashion parade which suggest a rather homoerotic element to the movie I wasn't expecting. Truly bizarre stuff... If you want, you can watch it for free on the NZOnScreen site but don't say I didn't warn you and don't mind the PG rating it is listed as on the site. Ha ha ha...

Update for 16 May...

Time for a New Zealand Classic, this one from way back in 1979.

Middle Age Spread is a comedy-drama about Colin (Grant Tilly), a man who has hit-the-wall in his life despite being a shoo-in to be the new principal at the school he works at and a reasonably happy home life with his wife Elizabeth (Dorothy McKegg) and teen daughter Jane (Kerry McGregor). Then enters a new teacher, Judy (Donna Akersten) who he's very interested in know, so he invites her to his and his wife's next dinner party and she comes with her rather square husband Robert (Bevan Wilson). Also at the party is long time friend Reg (Peter Sumner), who's boorish behaviour always livens up a party. One day, Colin spots Judy waiting for a bus and he offers her a lift home and she accepts. Turns out that although she's married to Robert with kids, she has has her own place and seems very much like an independent woman, something that intrigues Colin. Meanwhile, he watches Reg have an affair with one of his students and enjoying himself while he's stuck in meetings. When he gets the job as the headmaster, things are looking up and then he bumps into Judy and they hit it off so well that except for an interruption, they almost begin an affair. After being rejected by his wife, Colin begins an affair with Judy and it enlivens him. But, it's all about to collapse dramatically for Colin and it begins with his daughter becoming pregnant and then he gets found out with Judy by Reg, who isn't the most subtle of people as he's about to find out once more.

Mildly funny movie about a man having a midlife-crisis, mostly due to Peter Sumner's obnoxious lefty uni professor who's always lauding it over people despite coasting in his own career. And as is typical of New Zealand movies of the time, it ends it very depressing way, it now just seems like it was mandatory to never have a positive ending when things start going well. It has that 70s vibe where everyone has discovered sex and it's all freewheeling about it, except for Colin and Elizabeth until Colin has his affair. Judy is a baffling character, I can't work out how she was living in her own house while her husband and kids where in another house. And the ongoing joke in the movie is that Judy sleeps with everyone and Robert seems completely unaware of it. Then there's a scene where Colin asks a very drunk Reg to drive him home and he does! Fuck me have times changed. The movie is pretty watchable even if I didn't really relate to any of it but this movie is very much a relic.

Decided to try out NZ OnDemand for the first time, the only place Middle Age Spread seems to be available and I've got to say, the HD transfer is pretty damn good. Genuinely surprised at how good it is. Too bad I could only screen capture the movie so the videos are a bit jittery, but it helps that there's not a lot of movement in the below videos. I wish I could get a hold of a download so that I can work with it, but the site doesn't seem to offer that. The videos are not bad, but they could be better and the Donna Akersten videos are quite long and better nudity from her than in the movie I capped recently, Sleeping Dogs.

Also, NZ OnDemand have just in the last month or so put up the long forgotten Among The Cinders which is fantastic as I'll finally get to cap Rebecca Gibney's nude debut but sadly it looks like it'll be another screen capture job. Damn it all...

Update for 15 May...

Going through oversights on the site and came across the 1999 two-hand drama Better Than Sex, a movie I first capped in 2002 but never got around to recapping it for the site until now. Plenty of nudity from Susie Porter, a toss-up between this movie and The Monkey's Mask in which movie had better nudity from Susie but there's plenty in both.

Pretty straightforward movie, after a night out, Josh (David Wenham) ends up back at Cin's (Susie Porter) and they hit it off so well, he doesn't want to leave and even when he does, he ends up back at Cin's for more talk and sex. There's also a bunch of cutaways where their 'friends' (although it's mostly random people) talk about relationships and sex and stuff. A number of the actors in these cutaways are fairly well-known now like Jason Clarke, Tammy MacIntosh (although she already had a number of prominent roles), Leah Vandenberg amongst others. If you don't mind a talky movie, this is a pretty decent movie and at 80 minutes, it doesn't drag it out any longer than needed.

Sadly, there's a brief moment in the first video that is glitchy for a few seconds, it's distracting but it's only for a few seconds and I couldn't salvage it. I might be able to find another copy of the movie but it's now a very out-of-print movie and I doubt there will be HD upgrade but as the last week of updates have proved, you never know and a whole bunch of Australian movies just hit Netflix (locally, not sure about overseas).

Update for 8 May...

More new movies. I thought The Nest was going to be a slow burn thriller about a family falling apart but it turns out that it's just a slow burn drama with no real shocking moment which tears the family apart (well, if you don't count the death of the horse). Not a bad movie but it end in an anti-climatic way which it probably wouldn't have if it was a thriller.

Breeder is a Danish thriller where an equestrian rider (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen) wants to get pregnant but her husband isn't interested and seems to be distracted. One day, a neighbour's au pair bashes on the door looking for protection from pursuers only for the rider to find out that her husband is involved with the pursuers. She tracks him down and finds out that he works for an evil doctor (Signe Egholm Olsen) who captures women to create the perfect child and now the rider is in her custody. A quite nasty movie and a hard movie to like but it's OK if predictable.

Hmm, just realised that both female leads are horse riders, wasn't a deliberate connection though. Amazing how often these con incidences happen when I'm watching movies.

Saint Maud is a fairly decent horror movie about a deeply religious private nurse who goes to great lengths to 'save' the soul of her current patient, a formerly famous dancer. Gets a bit crazy in the end but is a solid horror movie that goes to some interesting areas.
