Update for 28 March...

Still going with the reduxes, this time another go at The In Crowd, finally in HD. Well, except the copy I got is some bizarre cut version where they kept the nudity for the most part but there's weird edits that remove a few seconds here and there and of course there's some interlap with what I want to cap. So in the first Susan Ward nude scene, for some explicable reason a scene is trimmed of about 5 seconds very randomly. There's also another scene below where Susan and Lori Heuring are dancing together, nothing to explicit but it is cut short by about 20 seconds. I got no idea what's going on, it's all very random and another great cut release from Amazon. I'm surprised that they didn't have the actual cut version instead.

Anyway, I still have my old DVD edit from the movie with the 2 videos that are uncut posted below. Plus a deleted scene featuring Lori Heuring.

Can't believe this movie is over 20 years old now. Also, all bar Laurie Fortier don't act any more, well Lori Heuring has only acted in the low-rent superhero movie series Cross in the last 10 years. Amazing, as I've capped all of these actresses a number of times but nothing new recently. This movie is the kiss of death...

Another batch of HD reduxes. The Hot Chick features on this site for the first time. Rachel McAdams gets an introducing credit in the movie despite already having a few smaller credits like My Name Is Tanino. She basically plays an antecedent of her character in Mean Girls and after body swapping, strangely disappears for about an hour of the movie. Sure it's a Rob Schneider vehicle but it's strange watching a body swap movie from only one of the protagonists' perspectives.

90s weekend update time. This was not planned but both movies feature Amanda Plummer if you're looking for connection...

Amercian Perfekt is one of those 90s road movies where bad people travel across the country pedalling their wares and they always have some weird philosophy for some reason. Robert Forster, just coming off being excellent in Jackie Brown, plays a doctor who lives his life by flipping a coin and he drags in Amanda Plummer playing a relatively nice person (for once) to the point that they 'fall' for one another. But as we know from the movies, only psychopaths flip a coin to decide stuff, so you know where this is going. Sadly, the movie gets sillier by the minute, particularly when Fairuza Balk turns up as Amanda Plummer's sister and this leads to one of the stupidest reveals ever. 90s road movies are a breed unto themselves; a genre that has mostly disappeared when it was very prevalent back then.

Update for 17 March...

A quick update from a new Australian movie.

I, Portrait is a drama/thriller where couple Julian (writer/director Nathan Hill) and Carmen (Natalie Heslop) are a loved up couple but Carmen has been struggling after the success of her last painting, The Tree Of Life. She tells Julian that she used to be able to paint something while blindfolded and it would become true, so he encourages her to do it and she paints someone but neither know who it is. Enter Carmen's old school friend Stephanie (Sienna Stass) who suspiciously tracks Carmen down but she's invited into their home and immediately sets her sights on Julian. Carmen begins to have dreams that cause her to become suspicious of Stephanie and she is right to as she gives him a sneaky blow job. After a very vivid dream, Carmen decides that Stephanie needs to move on but she's having nothing of it and wants Julian all to herself.

Amateurish and poorly thought movie that struggles to get anything going over its 75 minutes with scenes that go on forever and have no bearing on the plot whatsoever. There's an interview of Carmen that goes for 5 minutes that has no relevance to the plot and just keeps going and going. But there's montage scenes that go for minutes where it looks like that scene was playing out but the director decided it was better seen a musical interlude. The plot doesn't so much move forward as suddenly lurch towards an ending and most of the plot seem to happen in the dream scenes. Some of the editing is atrocious, scenes are intercut in confusing ways and completely kill the flow of the movie. Hill has made a number of movies but still makes amateurish mistakes and you wonder if he's learnt anything along the way. His previous movie, Colourblind, looked like he was forced to make it against his will. At least he seems happy to make this movie but I, Portrait is a poorly made, boringly plotted movie that never looks like getting interesting and never does. I will give Hill credit for having an amazing ability to cast actresses in his movies (my favourite being Sandy Greenwood in Jasper) and he can sell his dogshit movies all over the world better than pretty much anyone in the entire local industry. If only he knew how to make a movie...

Update for 16 March...

Was supposed to release this 90s update yesterday but it ended up being bigger than I expected.

Kla$h is a rare Jamaican movie where Giancarlo Esposito plays a photographer who goes to Kingston to take photos of the Kla$h music festival and the local surroundings only to get caught up with an old fling in Blossom (Jasmine Guy) who works/dances for a club owner/gangster who is setting up a drug dealer named Ragga who is working with the cops to bring down the club owner and everyone is double crossing everyone except for the 20 minutes of the movie where they just show highlights of the music festival including a cameo from Snow. Sadly no 'Informer' but he turns up for a song or two and a brief scene. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Esposito is in too deep with Blossom and all she wants is the piles of money the club owner has and it's never going to end well. Has a strange, almost documentary vibe to the movie, no more so than the 20 minutes at the concert but also Esposito feels like he's narrating a travelogue of Kingston more than the typical narration of a noir movie. Interesting in only that it's a rare movie made in Jamaica but the movie is a pretty by-the-numbers story of dumb idiot falling for the wrong girl.

Get the feeling the entire premise of The Fear came from someone working out that diametric is an anagram of matricide and then they put it in the movie and botch it by making the main character misremember what he heard, so they have to spend a ridiculous amount of the movie explaining this. Plus having a wooden Robin Williams from Bicentennial Man as the killer maybe one of the sillier ideas for a killer in living memory. The Fear has no idea what it wants to be so it throws in every idea under the sun hoping something clicks and it mostly doesn't. If the mystery of the protagonists mother's death and a 'scary' childhood puppet isn't enough, how about the campus rapist ending up joining a group going on a weekend to a cabin the confront their fears. Oh and then someone gets possessed for some reason. Way too much is going on here and unsuprisingly the movie bloats out to an hour and 3/4 with a very unsatisfactory ending hinting at an even cheaper sequel, which actually occurred with The Fear: Resurrection. Wes Craven turns up to bookend the movie and strangely the movie doesn't get a Wes Craven Presents moniker in it's title, just a cameo.

Update for 14 March...

A couple of quick series for the 90s weekend update. I remember Bodies, Rest & Motion was promoted at the beginning of so many VHS movies back in the day but I had no interest in watching it. Finally got around to watching it and it's exactly that type of 90s movie where are group of people get together and ponder where they are in life. I was completely confused by the relationship between Bridget Fonda, Tim Roth and Phoebe Cates's characters. Apparently Fonda and Roth were together but Roth and Cates looks way more 'comfortable' together and apparently they were 'friends' but I'm not convinced. Particularly when Eric Stoltz comes along and sweeps Fonda off her feet. And then it ends with Stoltz blundering around the night looking for Fonda, absolutely baffling...

The House Of Yes is basically a filmed play about twins (Parker Posey and Josh Hamilton), who comes together for a stormy Thanksgiving after a long time apart. Posey is a Jackie O-obsessed woman (everyone even calls her Jackie O which isn't annoying in the slightest...) who is impossible to get along with. Hamilton brings home his girlfriend (Tori Spelling) and Posey loses it. Meanwhile, their mother (Genevieve Bujold) tries her best to get rid of the girlfriend while their younger brother (Freddie Prinze Jnr) sets his sights on the girlfriend while his brother is being distracted recreating the assassination with his sister. And then the inevitable incest begins. Parker Posey's character is so insufferable in this movie and this isn't helped by her family just encouraging her behaviour, so they movie becomes very annoying before the very silly ending. Rachael Leigh Cook turns up as a younger version of Parker Posey, so Cook and Prinze Jnr were in a movie together just before they were together in She's All That.

New Zealand Classics for 8 March...

It's New Zealand's turn to get a 90s update with a couple of late 90s movies starring Sophia Hawthorne.

Savage Honeymoon is a 1999 comedy where the Savage family are going through a rough patch. Mickey (Nicholas Eadie) has had his motorcycle stolen and he's too busy with his schemes to pay attention to his wife Louise (Perry Piercy), who's becoming more frustrated with him. Their son Dean (Craig Hall) is back home and depressed because after a motorcycle accident his girlfriend left him and today is day she is getting married to someone else. Well, Mickey gets the motorcycle back with his incredibly dodgy mate Bryan (Stephen Hall) who was probably involved with stealing it in the first place. This is good news for daughter Leesa (Sophia Hawthorne), who is desperate to ride a motorcycle and as soon as it gets home, she take Dean and rides off to his ex's wedding to cause a little trouble. Mickey decides to cheer everyone up by having a party which goes well for everyone except their neighbours until Leesa screams home on the motorcycle with the cops on her tail and they manage to stall the cops long enough for Mickey to hide the stolen goods and motorcycle in the caravan and then go on an impromptu second honeymoon with Louise and they bring Dean along to cheer him up. They go to their old caravan spot which is now a gentrified nightmare run by a tinpot dictator (Ian Mune) who they just wholly ignore. Oh and Leesa and Mickey's mother Maisy (Elizabeth Hawthorne) have sneakily joined them for the honeymoon. Mickey looks to relive old times with Louise but he is constantly distracted so she takes off with old friend Rhys (Bruce Hopkins), who's always had a thing for her. Can Mickey save his marriage? Not bad and fairly fun movie that is basically a forerunner to the New Zealand TV show Outrageous Fortune, so much so it was probably the blueprint for the show. The movie is almost exactly one double episode of show and the director played a big hand in the show although I'm not sure he created it. Plays out a lot like a sitcom and it plays out in a convenient matter but there's a few laughs along the way and the mood is mostly good silly fun. Worth a look if you liked Outrageous Fortune, which I did.

When Love Comes is a 1998 drama about Fig (Nancy Brunning) who loves and is in a fledgling band with Sally (Sophia Hawthorne), who has taken in songwriting wunderkind and complete mess Mark (Dean O'Gorman), who Fig and Sally don't really like but his songs are way to good to kick him out and he writes best when he's a mess, so they try to keep him in that state. This is helped by Mark being in love with music producer Stephen (Simon Prast), who doesn't like him messed up particularly as he is looking after former singing star Katie (Rena Owen), who has come home to New Zealand to find herself before filming her big comeback showcase, leaving her on-off 'married' lover Eddie (Simon Westaway) in Los Angeles. Stephen wants Mark to write a new song for Katie but they have a fight after Mark comes over in a drugged up state and things get tense between the two. Fig and Sally meet Katie and concoct a plan to get her to sing backing vocal during their studio session that they managed to finagle, which she agrees to. Katie is struggling to find her voice so Stephen, Mark and her go to a beach house to get away for a little while. Eddie arrives in New Zealand looking for Katie but finds Sally and Fig and they end up taking him to the beach house and joining in. Mark starts doubting himself and his relationship with Stephen and decides to leave. Can Katie find her voice and can Mark and Stephen get together? OK drama, very 90s indie feel where a small group of people become interconnected but very talky and the movie doesn't really resolve much. Fig and Sally tell the story but they don't have much to do in the movie and end up just being 'there' for the most part. Mark, Stephen and Katie are the ones with issues and even then they are not overcoming insurmountable odds. But it's a fairly watchable movie as the characters do have a fair bit of depth and Fig and Sally are fairly fun to watch when they're together.

Australian Classics for 7 March...

Australian Classics and the 90s update meld together for a super update.

Pearls Before Swine is a 1999 drama/thriller where 'Daniel' (American musician Boyd Rice) is a hitman who with his gang of hitmen kill a bunch of homeless youth so that their organs can be harvested. In between, he spends time with his girlfriend Christy (Lisa Hutchinson) who works as a dominatrix and their friends Anthony (Greg Scealy) and Isabelle (Baby Lemonade Lamarr), who usually partner swap or dabbling in his fascination with BDSM. He also tries to make sense of the world by reading and watching films or going to a psychiatrist where he manages to outsmart them to his way of thinking... Anyway, his hitman buddy Paul (Nicholas Crawford-Smith) comes across a huge hit worth $25,000 each and it turns out that the person they are to kill is notorious writer Morton Bugs. 'Daniel' attempts to find out more about his hit by reading his work and he seems to like what he is writing. In the meantime, 'Daniel' continues his work as a hitman including working for friend Pascal (George Huxley) including on one hit that Christy joins him on. Paul gets himself into trouble when he kills a prostitute who turns out to be Isabelle. As the day of the hit comes closer, 'Daniel' becomes reticent about doing to job of someone he admires but it's may take him to a place he's only dreamed of.

Pretentious twaddle and then some from one of the directors of the low budget 'cult classic' Bloodlust where the character of 'Daniel' is some holier-than-thou know-it-all genius who lords his genius over everyone with his similarly-minded girlfriend and then it ends in a way so ridiculous it renders the plot of the movie null and void. You're never going to see this movie, so I'll spoil it. Turns out 'Daniel' is actually Morton Bugs, the writer who he is to kill. A whole chunk of the movie is devoted to 'Daniel' buying then reading Bugs' latest novel which would be ridiculous to anyone except for this pretentious twat who admires Nazi know-how, does some light Holocaust denial, spends an awful amount of time speaking about BDSM magazines with some other twat and just fuck off. Oh and the hit, it was set up so that Bugs can start some fascist horse shit and Paul never once wondered why he never knew what Bugs looked like even as he goes to kill him. Come on! Bloodlust was a completely low-rent, silly movie but at least it never took itself as seriously as this wank does. Absolute garbage...

Update for 3 March...

A couple of movies with plots revolving around lesbian affairs including an Australian movie.

My First Summer is a drama where 16 year-old Claudia (Markella Kavenagh) is left behind with only her dog after her mother commits suicide in the nearby river. Grace (Maiah Stewardson) saw the whole thing and decides to go back the next day and comes across Claudia hiding from her at her house. She acts friendly towards Claudia and she lets down her guard and they quickly become friends. Meanwhile, the police are investigating and Grace omits that Claudia was also there when her mother died and now no one knows of Claudia's existence. Grace hates her mother and stepfather and spends more time with Claudia to get away from them. She finds out that Claudia has never left the region and that her mother had sheltered her from the world. The police come snooping around the house and they take the dog while Claudia hides but as they leave they come across Grace who says that the dog is hers. She gets the dog back to Claudia and they spend a special day together which ends with the two falling in love. But Claudia's existence is about to uncovered and it may tear them apart forever. Better than OK drama about two girls who find friendship and then love in the most difficult of circumstances and both actresses are fairly good as the whole movie is pretty much just the two of them and the dog. The story is pretty simple and the friendship is well-presented with Claudia opened up to the world, well at least to someone other than her mother, for the first time. And at 75 minutes, it doesn't muck about with pointless sub-plots.

Update for 1 March...

90s weekend begins on a Monday...

Hadn't seen either of today's movies before. Stealing Beauty, from prominent Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, is basically a drama about Liv Tyler's character spending a summer in Italy where she plans to lose her virginity. Not the usual Bertolucci fare; the movie is not political in the slightest, more like the type of movie your parents/grandparents go to see in cinemas once a month to see a prestige movie and enjoy although this one might also get the call of being 'scandalous'. Fairly stock-standard stuff but has the added bonus of Liv Tyler and Rachel Weisz having pretty decent nude scenes.

Pump Up The Volume is a movie from the now abandoned teen rebellion genre where shy boy Christian Slater anonymously starts a pirate radio station that become a big hit at his prestigious school, which of course pisses off the teachers, so much so that they look to ban it. Again nothing ground breaking in this movie, just a fun time in a genre I kind of miss now that the teen genre has become an angsty yawn for the most part. Sure, there's a bit of teen angst in this movie but it only plays a small part as the movie is more about kids expressing themselves with the help of his rogue DJ.
