Update for 31 July...

Last 90s update for the month and finished with over 100 movies capped which is crazy but it's put a huge dent in the long list. According to IMDB there's over 37,000 movies made in the 1990s and I've now passed the 1400 mark. You can find all of the 90s movies I've capped at the following link. It should also be noted that I've marked off over 2000 movies that don't have anything to cap in them so I'm well on the way. Sure I'll never cap all of them, many never making it to out of being on VHS but let's see how many we can do.

I'm going to take a break from capping 90s movies full time for the moment. I will see if I can do one update a week may be on a Friday or Saturday as I have a few lined up ready to go. And of course if things don't pick up in regards to new stuff, I can always go back.

Today's update has a comedy flavour except for The Sunchaser, the final movie from director Michael Cimino who finally made his career killer after a number of tries. Didn't have a boring career did Cimino, quite a few failures (Heaven's Gate was a big one but I found it an interesting movie when I saw it recently) and some hits (The Deer Hunter of course).

Senior Trip from National Lampoon is a strange, very minor follow-up to the fairly successful Loaded Weapon 1. I recognised a few Canadian actors so it was obviously made in Canada but doesn't really star anyone that big compared to Loaded Weapon. Most of the jokes are poor and it's pretty forgettable stuff, sort of attempting to channel Animal House but failing miserably. Will probably be best remembered as Jeremy Renner's debut and nothing else.

Update for 30 July...

90s. A couple of Salma Hayek movies from just after Desperado including the anti-romantic comedy Breaking Up where it's basically just her and Russell Crowe going through their relationship. So much so that nobody else is credited in the movie so that's a pain in arse to identify anyone else. Odd part of both Hayek and Crowe's career, particularly Crowe who was still a year or so away from hitting it big with L.A. Confidential and was stuck making second tier movies like this, Rough Magic and strange road movie thriller and definitely B-grade No Way Back.

Also, I like seeing certain actresses turn up in movies and today's example is Tamara Clatterbuck who never has a lead role but she usually turns up for a few scenes for something sexy and today's example is from the horror thriller The Borrower. This is the 5th time I've capped her from a 90s movie.

Update for 29 July...

Still with the 90s.

Young Guns II was the first venture into Hollywood of acclaimed New Zealand director Geoff Murphy (Goodbye Pork Pie, Utu and may be the best New Zealand movie ever The Quiet Earth). His Hollywood career was a bit less auspicious, mostly sequels like this movie, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory and Fortress 2: Re-Entry also Freejack. He also made the fairly decent and sadly hard-to-find Rutger Hauer thriller Blind Side. That movie seems to have been forgotten but I remember quite liking it when I saw it on TV late one night a long while ago.

Took a bit of work to find out it was Carlotta Garcia in the video/caps below from Young Guns II as this seems to be the only movie she ever appeared in. No-one seems to have capped that scene, possibly because it's tough to work out who she is plus the scene is very dark and you can only just make out that she's naked in it and that may be because of it being in HD. Anyway, I had to do a bit of logic as her character is only mentioned by name once by Emilio Estevez's character, saying he's looking for her company and we briefly see her as he arrives in town. She otherwise just turns up very late in the movie to be with him. Too much work...

Interestingly, I was looking into who played the stripper in House Party 3 as it's an uncredited role but the character has a name (Angina Williams) and she seemed strangely important almost like it was a cameo. So I looked it up and there's a bit of interest in the character including inspiring a song and the actress confirmed it on TikTok. Weird.

You know what's still happening. A couple of mid-90s movies about presidents involved in murders which both have a little sex in them. Also one of those Wim Wenders movie where he worked with U2 and a Whoopi Goldberg movie where she impersonates a white man which is incredibly baffling mainly because it's absolutely awful and that it would fool no-one. I guess they had to overcome her hair and well... they didn't.

Update for 21 July...

Yet more 90s movies.

Pariah is a 1998 movie that is trying to cash in on the back of Romper Stomper by following a bunch of skinheads but the plot of the movie is so poor, it crumbles before it ends. Basically after his black girlfriend is gang-raped by skinheads and then she kills herself, a man decides to infiltrate the group of skinheads who did it and get revenge on them. Except he's such an absolute dumbarse that he forgets the revenge and starts to join in. Then a war breaks out between the skinheads and a black gang and well, he's off banging the head's girlfriend for some reason. There's some issues with Romper Stomper but it's a fairly decent movie with 3 excellent lead performances. Pariah has none of that and doesn't even have a satisfying revenge ending. Just a total whiff.

Dobermann is the French attempt at an ultraviolent Tarantino-like thriller and as with pretty much all of these types of movies, they get lost in the own ugliness. There's a kernel of a good idea here with Vincent Cassel well cast as the head of a violent robbery gang that has eluded the police so far. His gang is the usual collection of absolute shitheads plus his deafmute girlfriend (Monica Bellucci). This time the cops, headed by Tchéky Karyo, desperately wants the gang and he'll do anything and I mean anything to get them. So much so that even his fellow cops are repulsed by his action including one who says he'll scratch a swastika into his gravestone. Dobermann has it's moments but falls for the same traps as every violent thriller of the period did. The ending is unbelievably insane but I would love to know how they shot it. Just completely nuts. Some good nudity from Spanish actress Laura Mañá too.

Update for 19 July...

An absolute mish-mash of stuff, just capping anything I come across in this update so there's not a lot of nudity below mostly filling in a few small gaps.

It's taken a while but I've managed to find an uncut version of Mansfield Park as the movie seems to be only released with Victoria Hamilton's brief nude scene cut out. There have been various DVD and Bluray releases without the scene. Surprisingly, the uncut version of the movie turned up on SBS On Demand, so it's not HD quality but it'll do considering the uncut version is hard-to-find.

Update for 14 July...

Another spree of 90s movies. Had never seen Mad Dog Time (which was released in Australia as Trigger Happy) but I remember the connotations of it being Tarantino-like which is not really a surprise considering the writer/director of the movie, Larry Bishop, would later have a role in Kill Bill (there's a great scene where he and Michael Madsen are arguing about the latter's employment at the strip club) and Tarantino produced Bishop's 2008 movie Hell Ride. Mad Dog Time is a bit of a mess, it starts in a stop-start manner where people would talk then they'd have a shoot-out but when they talk, it's in an annoying rhyming scheme that's thankfully abandoned after the first third. The movie gets better the longer it goes, particularly when Richard Dreyfuss turns up as the kingpin and finally puts down Gabriel Byrne's increasingly annoying character. I'm glad this type of movie doesn't get made anymore because they all got annoying pretty quickly.

And another in the category of future actress of note who was a child star in the 90s (like Elisabeth Moss in Separate Lies) for this update comes from Virtuosity where a very young Kaley Cuoco plays Kelly Lynch's daughter who gets kidnapped and sets up the 'thrilling' finale. Interesting fact about the director of Virtuosity, Brett Leonard. He came to Australia in the mid-2000s and made two movies, the Marvel movie Man-Thing starring Rachael Taylor and a chubby chaser murder mystery called Feed. Both movies have some decent nude scenes which you can check out from the links supplied.

Update for 10 July...

Guess what? More from Tubi with a couple of sexy thrillers.

Separate Lives is from that strange period in the 90s when Jim Belushi turned up in sexy thrillers like Traces of Red and nobody seemed to think that was bizarre. This movie plays with the schizophrenia angle with psychology teacher Linda Hamilton asking Belushi to follow her as she wants to know what happens when she blacks out. Turns out she's a party girl also there's an ever growing number of men turning up dead who seem to have been involved with the teacher. Very much a 90s thriller with it's obsession with psychologists and a base knowledge of mental disorders mixed with sexiness. Very few fucked more than psychiatrists in the 90s. Elisabeth Moss turns up playing Beliushi's inquisitive pre-teen daughter. I've seen her turn up in 90s movies like The Last Supper, Mumford and Anywhere But Here. She has a much bigger role in this movie than she usually has.

Intimate Stranger, not to be confused with last update's Intimate With a Stranger, is concerned about another 90s obsession, phone sex. This time a killer becomes obsessed with a phone sex operator called Angel (Deborah Harry, who even has the time to sing a couple of songs) and is slicing up sex workers and she is forced to listen. The police thinks she's crazy but one cop (played by James Russo) decides to help in his spare time and they eventually track the killer down but not before the police realise the cop is illegally using police resources. Oh and the killer has Angel/Cory's sister (Paige French) and it's a race against time to find her. Pretty typical stuff with a silly conceit, quite nasty at times but perfectly watchable. Tia Carrere turns up for a sexy scene which is a nice little bonus.

Update for 8 July...

Yet more from Tybi, four movies in fact including another movie starring Joanna Paula and her body double.

I remember seeing Point Blank inexplicably turn up late night on Channel 10 not that long ago because I watched it thinking it was weird a barely known movie from the 90s was playing some time in the last 5 years, can't remember exactly but it was fairly recent. So when I came across it on Tybi, I remembered the pretty superfluous nude scene so I had to capture it. Pretty nasty B-thriller about a bunch of escaped violent crooks led by Kevin Gage just off Waingro in Heat taking a shopping mall hostage. One of the crooks is Danny Trejo playing the most psychotic and drugged up of the lot, himself just off being in Con Air. But the lead of the movie is actually Mickey Rourke, who goes Die Hard on the crooks. Also it turns out that Kevin Gage is his brother. Oh boy. Very violent movie, not great and from the period where Rourke's career was on a huge down swing. Interestingly, Rourke and Trejo would turn up together in a much better movie, Once Upon A Time in Mexico, only 5 years later. They've actually being in 4 movies together including the Steve Buscemi directed prison drama Animal Factory.

Update for 6 July...

Here's a couple of obscure 90s movies off Tubi.

Tollbooth is a bit of an oddball crime drama about a small town tollbooth operator (Lenny von Dohlen) who wants to be a police officer and marry his girl (Fairuza Balk) but she won't get with him proper until her drifter of a father comes back. Good news: He comes back. Bad news: He threatens the tollbooth operator and they get into a tussle and her father dies. Now he has to get rid of the body which his bait shop friend (Will Patton), who's fucking his girl, is all too happy to help with. Then the police start sniffing around and the tollbooth operator starts losing his mind. Not a bad little movie, has a pretty simple if dopey premise but works fairly well particularly when the tollbooth operator becomes a paranoid wreck plus it has it's share of weirdo characters.

I've got a few more movies off Tubi to come, just the most random of movies on that streaming service. Plenty of Australian and New Zealand movies and TV too. The American version has a much wider selection but the Australian version is not bad either. Not sure if you can get it without a VPN anywhere else.

Update for 5 July...

Digging into the 90s DVDs. Should've had this update out yesterday but ran into some stupid problems that took forever to work out to fix. Why can't things be simple...

I remember seeing both Happiness and I Shot Andy Warhol in cinemas back in the day, don't know if I fully understood either back then, particularly the ridiculously fucked Happiness. Jane Adams is just instant comedy anytime she's on the screen in Happiness and Camryn Manheim describing how she butchered the doorman is really something. Don't think that movie would survive today's environment particularly all the Dylan Baker stuff. Surprised neither have gotten a HD upgrade as both have some cult appeal.
