Update for 28 June...

More HD reduxes of Australian movies. Umbrella have really upped their game recently with their Australian releases after staggering for a while and they've just released a Bluray featuring both Day and Strike Of The Panther, which I think may be the first time it's being available in a version other than VHS in Australia. The two movies were Paris Jefferson's first roles and turns out she's still acting, pretty much exclusively in Britain and doesn't seem to have done anything in Australia (or New Zealand as she turned up in some episodes of Xena) since the 90s. Interestingly, this update has answered a question that I've been pondering for a while in who is the girl in the music videos for Icehouse songs 'Electric Blue' and 'Crazy', which I had a feeling was Cassandra Delaney but never convinced it was her and it turns out it is Paris Jefferson. Well, that's one question that can stop bugging me now...

A few HD reduxes of Australian movies, both new and old. Capped Windrider off DVD back in 2010 and a Bluray was released a while back and I finally picked up a copy. Also included an extended scene off the DVD that I posted in the original update that has slightly more nudity in it. When I first capped The Marsupials: Howling III, I capped from both the widescreen DVD and the full screen Bluray and now the widescreen Bluray has been released, so I've upgraded the widescreen videos. Update for 22 June...

A couple of redux series for today's update including finally redoing Psycho Beach Party, which was one of the earliest movies I capped back in 2002. Watched it for the first time since and it's one strange movie. Basically a 60s beach party movie mixed with more modern references that would have been avoided in the original genre mixed with a schizophrenic serial killer on the loose sub-plot. It's not the easiest watch because the earnest beach party stuff is fairly annoying but there's plenty of strangeness throughout that leavens the annoying stuff and everyone is very into it. Don't see movies like this get made often...

Update for 20 June...

Have capped any Spanish releases recently so here's a couple of new ones. Some quick synopses:

Elisa y Marcela is a drama about the first 'gay marriage' in Spain in the early 20th century where two women Elisa and Marcela (Natalia de Molina and Greta Fernández) fall for one another and after being separated for three years, find a way to get back together. But with gossip mounting about their 'relationship', they decide to take drastic measures to ward off the gossip with Elisa going away for a while and coming back as her recently dead male cousin and then get married out of town. It isn't long before this ruse is uncovered, so the two women split to Portugal until they can get money for two tickets to sail to Argentina but they are arrested and time with running out for the two to get on the boat or be deported back to Spain where they may spend up to 20 years in prison. This is also complicated by Marcela being pregnant and after the baby is born, it becomes sick. Rather sad story that has a happy ending, well sort of, is a fairly decent watch and has plenty of lesbian action if you're into that too.

Framed is a torture porn horror movie about a group of teenagers who are hanging out for the night until it gets gatecrashed by a group of weirdos who have targeted the group for a dark web streaming show where they force the teenagers to commit violent acts against one another. I think it's supposed to be part satire on the streaming TV culture but honestly it's just another torture porn movie from a genre I thought was pretty much (deservedly) dead. Just ugly, nasty stuff...

Update for 16 June...

More 90s movies for the weekend. Like the total bozo I am, I've watched the sequel Fortress 2: Re-Entry but have never seen the original. So, finally gotten around to watching this Australian Classic, yes, made on the Gold Coast in the brand new (at the time) Movie World Studios and was Village Roadshow's first big crack at the American market having tried with smaller efforts like The Delinquents and complete shit like Bloodmoon. Now Village Roadshow is big time Hollywood. Anyway, the movie is pretty much exactly the same as the sequel except his wife is missing from the sequel (it seems Loryn Locklin left acting before the sequel was made, a shame). It's an OK movie with an alright cast of oddballs and some decent moments but it's nothing to get excited over. Not much to say about Red Corner, an obvious attempt at anti-China propaganda except it has a rare straight Bai Ling role which is good for a laugh considering the type of characters she plays now.

I hadn't even heard of Killers until I watched it today, no idea what it was even about and well, that was a mistake. Basically, two notorious teenager brothers who slaughtered their parents escape from prison and hide out in the house of a unexpectedly welcoming family and well, they have a surprise or two for the brothers. Which in isolation doesn't look like a bad plot except this movie was made in the mid 90s, so you know what that means; it's heavily influenced by Tarantino. So you get endless monologues of boring bullshit that overwhelms the movie before it ends in a pissweak shoot-out which shows the limitations of the budget. The twist in the middle of the movie was a good change and could've saved this movie but no, how about another monologue about some bullshit nobody cares about. I think this movie could've been the cult hit it desperately wants to be if it played as a genre movie but it wants to be Natural Born Killers and instead Killers is just absolutely annoying. It does have a lengthy but poorly edited sex/nude scene featuring cutie Nanette Bianchi playing a teenage girl that is horny for the killers, so something can be salvaged from this bog awful wannabe. Ugh, just when I'd thought I'd seen all the Tarantino knock-offs...

Ashes In The Snow is a drama about a family from Lithuania who are taken away and forced to work at the gulags in Siberia during the war. A total downer of a movie but is OK and I'll watch Bel Powley in anything.

Broken Ghost is a thriller about a family who move to an old murder house in Montana to make a new start after something happened to their daughter but between a kid at school looking to bully the daughter and a number of strange happenings in the house, things aren't looking any better for the family. OK movie that has a twist that ends up making the title a bit of a misnomer. Made by an Australian director of Summer Coda and Blinder who now makes low budget thrillers like this in the US with a bunch of his Aussie mates who turn up in this movie.

The Go-Getters is a Canadian comedy about a deadbeat drunk and a drug-addled prostitute (Tommie-Amber Pirie) who reluctantly team up to get $98 to get bus tickets out of town to start a new life except neither have a cent to their name, are terrible at making any money and every scam they run ends incredibly badly. Gotta admit I found this movie to be surprisingly funny and the two leads work well together. Worth a look.

Update for 11 June...

A couple of new movies. Some brief synopses:

Assimilate is a thriller about three teenagers who find out that the town including their parents have been taken over by some sort of parasite from outer space and they desperately try to survive as the entire town of hijacked bodies come after them. OK but if you've seen one Invasion Of The Body Snatchers movie, you know how these movies go.

The Perfection is a thriller where a former music prodigy Charlotte (Allison Williams) decides to get in touch with her old teacher (Steven Weber) after spending 10 years looking after her sick mother and then having a mental breakdown. He invites her to join him in China as he looks for a new prodigy and meets his current prodigy Lizzie (Logan Browning) and they instantly fall for one another and begin an affair. Lizzie gets Charlotte to tag along with her as she travels around China but Lizzie succumbs to a shocking virus and then everything goes to shit. And how... Well, this was an absolute surprise, thought it was going to be a straightforward stalker thriller but it turns into an incredibly fucked descent into hell before turning into a different type of movie. I liked this movie quite a lot, had no idea where it was going after 20 minutes and even has a satisfying ending of sorts. It's on Netflix if you're interested.

Update for 8 June...

90s weekend update has a look at the 1994 erotic thriller Color Of Night, just released on Bluray with both the 122 minute theatrical cut and the 140 minute director's cut. There's a fair bit of difference between the two cuts with a lot of scenes edited differently particularly the sex scenes. I have seen a version of the movie before off a TV showing but I have no idea which cut it was, I'm assuming it's the theatrical cut, so I had a look at the director's cut and it is actually not a bad little movie, not without issues (the biggest still being Jane Marsh obviously playing 3 different characters and none of them ended up being the killer) but a good fun watch nonetheless. There's a lot of silliness going on throughout but the director's cut embraces it's own silliness with a cheeky sense of humour and playing a lot like a giallo movie with over-the-top violent set pieces owing a lot to the director Richard Rush's love of stunts. Color Of Night is very much a movie of it's time, a movie that wouldn't be made now but also a movie that is a victim of it's own excess. Sadly, the movie probably killed any chance Jane Marsh had of having a Hollywood career, not helped by other factors including an overbearing husband who was one of the producers of this movie who insisted in being very hands on with her career, to her detriment. If you ever feel like watching this movie again, I recommend checking out the director's cut as it makes slightly more sense, has more sex and nudity and check out the director's commentary with the now 90 year-old director who had some great insights but also sounded like he could die at any moment...

As mentioned above, I've made videos from both cuts of the movie as there are different edits of a lot of scenes and some scenes that only exist in either of the versions. I didn't recap some scenes from the theatrical cut because the difference was they were shorter with no extra shots.

Australian Classics for 4 June...

Some more Australian Classics including another couple of VHS releases. According to my list, this update features the 600th Australian movie that I've capped.

Family Demons is a 2009 no budget psychological thriller where Billie (Cassandra Kane), a heavily abused teenage girl struggles just for food as her abuser, her mother (Kerry Reid), drinks herself stupid and brings home strange men that are more interested in Billie than her. After taking a few dollars from her sleeping mother to buy food, she is harassed by a group of young men who intend to rape her but one of the men is a concerned neighbour (Alex Rafalowicz) who likes her and saves her. Billie has another tangle with her mother which ends with her mother becoming concussed and taken to hospital. She is helped by the concerned neighbour and with her mother out of the way for a while, they fall for one another and he promises to take her away. But as Billie packs to leave, her mother comes back to torment her one more time. While the movie has severe limitations mostly due to it's budget, it manages to show some definite promise and even makes a decent go at the abuse story line even if it does come off as heavy-handed in later scenes (something, something history repeating). And the supernatural angle is unclear and doesn't seem necessary. Family Demons turns out to be an OK movie with enough promise from first-time writer/director Ursula Dabrowsky for her future projects. It's available to watch for free from its IMDB page if you are interested.

And the director made a second movie, the 2016 kidnap thriller with a supernatural element Inner Demon (I think there's supposed to be a Adelaide Demon trilogy although I see no sign of a third movie yet) which is about a teenage girl who is kidnapped by a husband and wife team and brought to a forest where she manages to escape only to realise that the horror has only just begun. Also a decent movie that probably would be better as a straight kidnap thriller but just like Family Demons, has a confusing supernatural element. The first 50 or so minutes are tight and tense and it has a very dark twist which it doesn't explore enough because of the supernatural angle which is a shame because this could've been a genuine sleeper hit. Anyway nothing really to cap, just wanted to mention it.

Dangerous Game is a 1988 thriller where a group of university students plan a night out mainly so they can hook up. Meanwhile, crazed Irish cop Murphy (Steven Grives) is harassing one of the students Jack (Marcus Graham) because of past history with Jack's father. After a incident as Jack is about to tell his superiors about the harassment, Murphy is suspended. The uni students get together where Jack bets so-called computer hacker David (Miles Buchanan, brother of Simone and Beth) that he couldn't hack into something big. David claims to have opened the door of a major department store downtown, so the group check and it turns out it is open. They decide to have a bit of fun in the store but they are followed by Murphy who wants to continue his harassment. Murphy takes the computer override key which locks the doors and leaves the students locked in the store with Murphy who attempts to torment them but while throwing a knife at a target, he accidentally kills Tony (John Polson, again tagging along with angst like he did in last week's movie Raw Nerve). Murphy doesn't take killing Tony too well and decides to take it out on the remaining group and the rest of the night becomes a fight for survival. A strange mix of 80s computer thriller where they haven't worked out what computers can actually do yet and stalker thriller that doesn't really work as either and is clearly made for an American market as a ticket into working in America. And it worked as the director Stephen Hopkins would go on to direct Predator 2 and the similar Judgment Night. I swear I'd seen this movie before but couldn't remember one moment from it. Strange. Anyway, Kathryn Walker (who is capped below) would only ever appear in 3 movies, this, the rare Australian western Bullseye and the struggling dancer movie Belinda that I should get around to capping one of these days. Strange scene below where she exposes her breasts that comes completely out of nowhere. Decided to put a few VHS caps of the nudity as the scene is mighty quick.

Jigsaw is a 1989 political (well, sort of) thriller where Virginia (Rebecca Gibney) finds out that Alex (David Bradshaw), the man she's known for 3 weeks and married the day before, has turned up dead at the beach by drowning. As she tries to wrap her head around what's happened, a rather curt detective Broulle (Dominic Sweeney) asks questions which suggests that Alex may have been murdered so she begins to think about what she actually knows about him. When Alex's young son Aaron turns up out of nowhere, she realises she knows pretty much nothing. Broulle starts asking questions to some powerful people which leads to political candidate Jack McClusky (Terence Donovan) who gets a bit nervy and hires mysterious hitman Ed Minter (Nick Lathouris) to get rid of Virginia. As she barely escapes from Ed, Virginia gets to the bottom of Alex's death and it ends up being a lot closer to home than she expecting. One of those paranoid but very local 80s political thrillers that isn't all that big but ends up having stuff happen that happen in big political thrillers and it feels very out-of-place. The story is a tad confusing and goes off in tangents that don't seem relevant to the plot; Gary Day's character seems to only exist to introduce Terence Donovan's character who seems to only exist to introduce the Ed Minter character who has a ridiculous amount to do with the conspiracy for someone who seems to be only a hitman. Jigsaw also contains quite possibly the most ridiculous climatic car chase I've ever seen that involves not one but two people clinging to a regular sized car as it scuttles around the unusually empty busy streets of Melbourne (I've never seen St. Kilda Rd with no traffic; it's weird as hell) before ending in a gun fight where the person killed is seemingly killed by a magic bullet. I've watched the ending three times and still can't explain it. Absolutely bafflingly laughable. This is an early Australian production for New Zealand actress Rebecca Gibney who is now one of the biggest names on Australian TV and has been since the early 90s. She has a bunch of early New Zealand films I wouldn't mind getting my hands on, Among The Cinders probably has her best nudity (and she hasn't done that much) but has only ever being available on VHS and is very hard to get (and expensive). Maybe one day...

The two VHS titles are fairly decent quality. I think Dangerous Game has had a DVD release overseas on some low rent labels but has never had a local release as fair as I can tell. Strange as it seems like it would be in something prime for the Umbrella treatment, particularly with the director and cinematographer fairly prominent in American productions and Marcus Graham and John Polson are still tooling about. Jigsaw has probably not being seen for 30 years until I fished it out of my pile.
