Update for 30 November...

90s update time. This update has been a bit of a debacle, I tried getting up yesterday but run into problems and then more problems but it's done now. First problem: It turns out that the copy of Ruby Cairo aka Deception I have seems to be missing a late scene where Andie MacDowell is nude and I have no idea why. This seems to be original cut but there's no evidence of an alternate cut that has the missing scene. Ah well...

Second problem: In October 2020, I capped the movie Bug Buster off fullscreen DVD and mused about how good a HD copy would be. Well, I have a HD copy and it's terrible quality, zoomed in which cuts out a fair bit plus the speed of the image seems to be off and the colour is also off. Doubt there will be another version so I recommend the fullscreen version which is available here.

Update for 27 November...

More Australian movies for the Saturday update, 4 movies I haven't capped before and a redux, all released between 1999-2002. Some quick synopses:

Radio Samurai is a 1999-2006 low budget comedy where a radio presenter is sacked after making one too many pranks but is given one more episode to finish. He decides to go big with a radio play and gets the help of his feminist writer girlfriend and sleazy best friend who have just hooked up without the radio presenter's knowledge. Things are looking bad particularly with his replacement more than willing to humiliate him but the presenter decides to go ahead with his flimsy plan and hope for the best. Silly movie with a ridiculous central love triangle with bogs the movies down for the most part. The comedy is particularly nonexistent and it's low budget causes all sort of problems with the plot. A struggler.

Narcosys is a 2000 cyberpunk thriller set in 2018 where a gang of crims rob chemical plants for drugs because the drugs there are pure and haven't been infected with a virus used to thin out the ever increasing drug addicted population. One of the gang has been forced to go undercover in the gang and films their exploits. But after robbing the last chemical plant in the area, they decide to go for one last big score. The leader of the gang gets pissy with the rest of the gang and steals their credits and drugs then he finds out that one of gang is undercover, so he decides to kill them. Also, a low rung factory worker is injected with something which may kill him or make him superhuman. Boring plot for a cyberpunk movie and the low budget strikes again with no action robberies and a movie that seems to have been padded out to feature length as some scenes go on forever and no idea what the point of the factory worker is or what happens to him in the end. Very much influenced by The Matrix but with little of the interest of that movie.

Hard Knox is 2001 action comedy pilot when a private detective (Kim-Maree Penn) is getting married but her father (Lee Majors) hasn't arrived because he is being attacked by a woman (Simone Kessell) and a couple of goons who want a gemstone that he is supposed to have. The private detective goes to help him but doesn't get there in time and her father is dropped from the roof of his building while she barely survives an explosion. The private detective decides to go after the woman who killed her father and gets help with an unlucky cop (Thomas Calabro) who just quit his job and just happens to be in the right place at the right time. Well, the woman still wants that gemstone for her boss as when joined with the other two gemstones he has in his possession, he will be given great powers. Oh and the boss just happens to be the man the private detective was going to marry. Silly, low-rent movie made for the American market so it's dodgy accents ahoy except from the main character who seems to be dubbed but still with an Australian accent. Also made in the most non-American looking city ever in Sydney. The action is pretty good mainly because the lead is a martial arts champion and knows her stuff and Simone Kessell is good too as a real shitty villain but the plot is ridiculous, Lee Majors comes back as ghost, Calabro is lumped with some real anti-comedy and someone forgot to tell the lead it's a comedy and she plays it way too seriously. Hard to believe this comes from John Edwards who would become known for much better shows like Love My Way and Puberty Blues.

I recorded Hard Knox from a screen recording of Amazon Prime which is the only place I've ever seen it. The quality isn't the greatest but as I'd never heard of the movie before seeing it on Prime, I doubt a better quality version will become available.

Selkie is a 2000 family movie where a teenage boy starts to develop features that make him more animal than humans normally are. When the family moves to a remote island for her mother's new job, he finds out what he is turning into when he goes to save a girl who falls off the jetty. Turns out he's part seal and that he's actually a selkie. But he doesn't want to be a selkie and goes about trying to find out how to stop this from happening with his grandfather. Meanwhile, his mother is tracking dolphins but the trackers are going missing. After he helps a selkie trapped as a human he becomes closer to becoming just human but time is running out. OK movie, nothing special but not that bad.

Interestingly, there's a very brief nude scene in Selkie when the female selkie transforms despite the movie being a PG family movie. I recorded it off a recent SBS movies showing which will probably be highest quality it'll ever be seen.

Former Neighbours actress Jenna Rosenow is in Nobody Will Believe You, nothing to cap but strangely, very strangely, she plays the mother of a teenage daughter. I thought surely they're playing sisters, Jenna wouldn't even be 30 (apparently she just turned 30) but no, the teen daughter kept calling her 'mom'. Baffling...

Update for 23 November...

More 90s movies from Europe, well L.A. Without A Map is somewhat made in Los Angeles but is also filmed in England with a Finnish director/producer. Bandits is a German movie where a women's prison band escapes before a gig they were about to play and become the most wanted band in the country both by the police and the music industry/fans. It stars Jasmin Tabatabai, who featured in one of my first series that I ever capped from the movie Die Putzfraueninsel. You can see the caps below, capped from an SBS VHS recording (look at those subtitles, still the same after all these years).

    
    

Also it seems that a couple of videos from the movie L.A Without A Map show more in the fullscreen version of the movie (including a hint of nipple in one) but the likelihood of that being available and not from (or even from) VHS are practically none.

Update for 21 November...

One more Australian movie from 2008 that I didn't have time to finish capping yesterday. I should really dig into his movies at some stage because I've only capped Lonely Hearts, Golden Braid, Exile, Innocence, Human Touch, Force Of Destiny plus his Erotic Tale, Touch Me. There's about 8-10 others I still haven't capped and I think I have most of them, not necessarily in great quality but some of his movies are not easy to find particularly from the 80s.

Salvation is a later Paul Cox directed movie (his second last), about Barry (Bruce Myles), who visits a prostitute Irina (Natalia Novikova) and it changes his life. He's married to prominent TV evangelist Gloria ( Wendy Hughes), who runs his life so he finds comfort and his faith again through his visits to Irina and after a while they fall for one another. But Irina's pimp starts hassling her then steals her passport and Barry decides to go the extra mile to save Irina. A bit more straightforward than the usual Paul Cox movie, basically turns into a noir thriller in the third act. Has his usual themes of art and love but they are less prominent here. Probably ends up being one of his more accessible movies. Not bad but it's basically a dressed up 'hooker with a heart of gold' movie.

Update for 20 November...

That time again with a couple of Australian movies from 2008 that I strangely haven't gotten around to capping yet and a recent Australian short film. Some quick synopses:

Lake Mungo is a fictional documentary about the death of Alice Palmer (Talia Zucker), who drowned herself in a local dam. Her family struggle to get on with life and then Alice starts making appearances in photos and videos and they all but mostly her mother begin to believe that she may be still alive. The truth is a bit more complicated than that. A pretty well done movie that uses the documentary format extremely well to create an interesting mystery. There's some genuinely strange moments that work and apart from a few minor missteps, it is a very fine movie.

Acolytes is a thriller where three school kids (one played Hanna Mangan-Lawrence) find a body in the local forest and instead of going to the police they decide to find the killer themselves. When they do, he turns out to be a serial killer (Joel Edgerton). But instead of backing away and letting the police handle it, they extort the serial killer to kill a man (Michael Dorman) who assaulted the two boys years earlier and just got out of jail. Big mistake. Not bad movie, it becomes less credible the longer it goes but there's enough going on to make is a passable movie.

Interestingly, this young lady turns up just over an hour into Acolytes for her first film role:

Yes, that's Bella Heathcote. She plays a Norwegian backpacker who gets menaced by the serial killer. Also Hanna Mangan-Lawrence's second movie, her first being the same year's The Square.

Finally a short film, Tangles and Knots starring Odessa Young and Leeanna Walsman as a daughter and mother who find the dynamics of their relationship challenged by a party they host.

I capped the movie back in August 2003 off an SBS airing, so it would've been VHS quality and haven't seen it since. Interesting movie, depressing but filled with oddball humour including narration from a rotting fish.

Was coming up short with stuff for yesterday's update so decided to make a few videos from Australian short film but go a bit carried away and ended up making a new update for today. Mostly stuff I haven't gotten around to with mostly actresses that are fairly unknown. Disappointing that Laura McIntosh hasn't kicked on with no credits since 2017. Update for 13 November...

Two Australian and two New Zealand movies for the Saturday update. Had a bit of trouble this week with movies to cap, watched a few that didn't have anything. So not much in this update. Some quick synopses:

West Of Eden is a 2017 New Zealand epic drama made from the filmmakers of last week's entry Broken Hallelujah about a Maori cowboy who tells the story of how he got his cowboy hat. Well, in 1960 he leaves town and takes a job at a remote farm with a family that is full of secrets including when he walks in on the wife of the patriarch having an affair with her husband's brother. The patriarch's son wants to leave the farm and the town is whispering about him and he finds a soulmate in the cowboy. A series of events leads to a tragedy and the dismantling of series of lies that had kept the family together. Much tighter than Broken Hallelujah and also much better but still has its issues including that it takes forever to get going as it has a lot to explain.

Alien Addiction is a 2018 New Zealand stoner comedy (of sorts) where aliens arrive in a small town in New Zealand and a local stoner comes across them in the nearby forest. Turns out the aliens are massive stoners, not for weed but human shit. So the two aliens go on journey with the bloke to find the perfect human shit to get high from and it turns out it's from a local woman who has a thing for the man. Also, alien hunters are on the trail looking for a big scoop. Basically a stoner comedy but with shit and it's really something. There are a few laughs but there are so many shit jokes it becomes overwhelming.

How Do You Know Chris? is a 2020 Australian drama where a teenage girl called Emi meets a man called Chris in a laundromat and they get along so well that he invites her to a party he's having that night. She decides to go but is completely out-of-place and she isn't the only one. The people all know Chris but don't know why they are there while Chris hasn't even arrived to his own party. As the partygoers talk to one another, Chris arrives but something is off and it's going to be a night they won't forget. The twist is sort of given away early so it's a matter to work out why everyone is there and well, that isn't answered that well. The movie has a flawed concept and it struggles to gather momentum to it's inevitable ending. Disappointing.

Friends And Strangers is a 2021 Australian absurd comedy where Ray and Alice are two friends that go on a camping trip but when things heat up between them, things go awry apparently. Later, Ray has job interview as a videographer for a wedding but things go wrong along the way and then it doesn't get much better once he gets to the home of the client. Very mundane plot but bit-by-bit the absurdity of what is happening takes over and it becomes a surprisingly intriguing movie. Way better than I was expecting.

Update for 6 November...

It's the Saturday Australian/New Zealand update with 6 more New Zealand movies. Some synopses:

Savage is a 2020 gang drama that follows Damage (Australian actor Jake Ryan) over 30 years of his life. In 1965 after an argument with his father, young Danny is caught stealing and is sent to a juvenile detention centre where he meets Moses and starts a lifelong friendship. Danny earns respect in detention when he beats up the main guard after he pushes around Moses. After leaving detention in 1972, Danny and Moses with a few others start a gang called the Savages but things become frayed when Danny meets up with his long lost brother Liam, who is in another gang, which causes Moses and the others to beat Liam and a fellow gang member up. Danny is forced out by Moses and he goes to his brother's gang and he is told the only way to join is to get revenge on the Savages. Danny leads then to their lair but warns the Savages in advance and helps them beat up the rival gang. He earns back his place in the Savages. In 1989, Danny now Damage and Moses (John Tui) lead the gang with an iron fist but that is tested when potential recruit Red (Poroaki Merritt-McDonald) attempts to run away with girlfriend Lilly (Italiyah Wilson) and Liam (Seth Flynn), now out of the gang, comes back into his life. Interestingly told movie where it looks like the movie is going to be about the older Damage but after an introduction, spends the next hour following his early gang life before closing out with Damage's turning point. The introduction doesn't add much to the story and would have probably have been better off starting from the start. Other than that, the story is brutally told, lots of gang violence, both between gangs and inside the gang and the story holds interest throughout, showing that while gang life has great camaraderie with people that will have your back, it is in no way glamourous and all you end up with is a lifetime of nothing.

The Inland Road is a 2017 drama where 16 year-old Maori girl Tia (Gloria Popata) runs away from home after a bust up with her mother and hitches a ride with Will (British actor David Elliot) and his brother-in-law Matt but they have an accident where Matt dies and Tia ends up in hospital with large scars. She has a bust-up with her father, who sees a tattoo on her neck and tells her that she can't stay with him. So Tia goes to Matt's funeral and ends up staying with Will and his heavily pregnant wife Donna's (Chelsie Preston Crayford) house in their barn because they are renovating. Things get off to a rocky start when Tia starts shooting at possums that are annoying her in the middle of the night. Donna wants her out but Will puts his foot down and says that she can stay indefinitely because of the accident. Matt's widow May (Jodie Hillock) is struggling and after a dinner goes poorly, Donna and Will offer to look after May's daughter Lily as she mourns and recovers with her parents. Tia helps out around the farm and with Lily and starts to take a liking to Will which Donna is very suspicious of, particularly after they get stuck a fair way from home with a flat tyre and have to stay the night in the car. And rightfully so too as Tia kisses Will but he does not reciprocate. Tia then attempts to seduce Will and Donna catches her but instead of chewing her out, Donna tells her that she needs to go home and Tia tells her why she had to leave including why she got the tattoo. Not bad drama, not a lot happens but at 75 minutes it doesn't muck around and the movie is fairly watchable. I kept wondering why Tia was allowed to stay so long but the story is given an unexpectedly satisfactory ending that works surprisingly well considering where it could've gone. Newcomer Gloria Popata is quite good and is helped by given a well-written role. I think having limited experience probably helped her play a troubled outsider with a misguided innocence that gets her into that trouble. Interestingly, it is written and directed by Jackie Van Beek, far better known for comedy including the movie The Breaker Upperers and this a rapid departure from what she usually does. No comedy in this movie.

Broken Hallelujah is a 2014 ensemble drama where business owner Gary (Roussel Dubois) is struggling and lays off a number of people but his real problem is that he has a gambling problem he's been hiding very well until he blows it one night and loses the car. His wife Kirsty (Vanessa Riddell) takes their daughter Ashley and goes to her unwelcoming mother's place. Gary struggles and becomes depressed. Kirsty moves on and starts a relationship with car salesman and local lothario Jason Wiki (Ben Mitchell), who everyone seems to have a problem with including Kirsty when she finds out he's still playing the field. Oh and she's pregnant. During an argument between Kirsty and Jason, Ashley sneaks out and gets hit by a car. Real estate agent Lex (Mike Ginn) and his friend Nick (Mathew McKay) buy speakers from shady men that used to be owned by Gary and they throw in a samovar which was Kirsty's family heirloom. Also, Francis (Dean Carruthers) can't come to terms with his wife leaving him and having a successful job as a TV presenter. Ten years later, Lex cheats on his pregnant wife but they work their way through it. Kirsty and Jason have split up but they have a daughter, Evie. Ashley survived but gets seizures. One day on a beach, Francis decides to kill himself while Kirsty, Ashley, Lex and his wife are there and Lex saves him. Gary has been in the mental hospital for all of those ten years and Kirsty has been spending time with him but now he is dying. Francis' son doesn't take his suicide attempt well and there's still over half-an-hour left... Oh boy, this 135 minute attempt at making a worlds collide ensemble drama is admirable but incredibly clumsy and heavy-handed. The main focus of the movie is Kirsty and her story takes up most of the running time which wouldn't be a problem if other characters weren't hamfistedly jammed into the plot to give the story a wider view when it really isn't necessary. Even then, Kirsty's story seems to be surface level only. We spend the first half-hour following Gary but then he disappears except for when he is dying. There's a writer character who is everywhere but has no story and it isn't known that he's a writer until after the 2 hour mark because before then, I would've laid money on him being uncovered as an angel. The supporting characters don't get much of a story and are clearly put in to give Kirsty's story meaning which is fine but we don't need to know about them and what we do end up knowing is hardly worth it. High marks for effort at something substantial but achievement is seriously lacking which is a shame.

I did watch the 2016 sci-fi comedy This Giant Papier-Mâché Boulder Is Actually Real but I lost interest and barely remember it even though I only watched it a couple of days ago. Something about three nerds going to a comics convention and ending up inside a clunky 50s sci-fi movie. Not for me...

Penny Black is a 2015 drama where famous model Penny Black (Astra McLaren) is all washed-up at 23 and burned a lot of bridges in the process. She looks after her simple sister Alex (Toni Garson), who is obsessed with a low rent superhero TV show (which I think is a short the director made). Penny is a careless woman and with Alex decides that she needs to save her career and goes on a long drive to Wellington to do this. Along the way, she loses her handbag with her money, which is picked up by self-styled anarchist Guy (Anton Tennet) who then comes across Penny and Alex on the side of the road after Penny crashed the car. He takes them along for the ride as he travels around spray painting his little jokes on signs and walls while living life on the fringe, a big learning curve of Penny, who has always had the finest things. Penny then finds out what she needs to do and she decides to get even with the evil corporation that is behind her downfall and Guy is the perfect guy to help her achieve this. Silly movie, very minor with a plot that is way more complicated than it needs to be. I have no idea why Penny does the things that she does, she very impulsive and careless and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Guy's an annoying character, his anarchism is very base level, he's more petty graffiti 'artist' than having a 'bring down the capitalist world' aesthetic. Which may end up being a more accurate portrayal of anarchists than it means to be. It's a movie that's trying to say that living simply is better than being caught up in the capitalist world but I don't think the movie portrays this well with the character of Penny Black. She's never going to be this person that the filmmakers want her to become, it's just not believable.

The Map Reader is 2008 drama where Michael (Jordan Selwyn) is a shy 16 year-old who lives with his shut-in alcoholic mother Amelia (Rebecca Gibney) and ever since he was a kid, he's been obsessed with maps. This is mainly because he wants to find his father, who his mother doesn't give any time to and won't tell him about. With his 'friends', they spy happy-go-lucky blind girl Mary (Bonnie Soper) including while she is in the shower. They are joined by schoolmate Alison (Mikaila Hutchinson), who is bares the brunt of sexist gibes from Michael's friends but he pays no mind to them and becomes friends with Alison. Alison goes to Michael's house where she introduces him to his mother and Alison takes a compass from his room. When Alison comes to school with a black eye, Michael finds out that he father did it and makes a feeble attempt at intervening. Amelia invites an old friend around for dinner and she brings her daughter, blind girl Mary to join them. Mary takes a shine to Michael and when Amelia and Mary's mother go to the pub, Mary seduces Michael and tells him that she doesn't want more because she's moving for university. Michael attempts further contact with Mary but wimps out. Amelia tells Michael to see the world but he's not interested. At a concert, he catches up with Alison and they go back to her place where she gives his compass back, which she has turned into a necklace. He stays the night and the next morning he is woken by Alison and her father fighting and Michael comes out and attacks her father while Alison knocks him out with a frying pan. She then gives him a box full of money and tells him to never come back. Michael picks up his things and leaves the country but not without some reluctance. OK movie, a fairly stock-standard coming-of-age story that is mostly effective. The ending is a bit of puzzle, I don't know what it was going for with that also strange as the story is simply told up until that point. Rare New Zealand production for Gibney after Among The Cinders. I think this was the first New Zealand movie since then and interesting that it's such a little known movie where she isn't the main character.

Update for 2 November...

Another 90s movie, today's movie is the 1991 low budget horror fantasy Shock 'Em Dead, a movie where loser pizza shop worker Martin (Stephen Quadros) quits his job to audition for a band on the make, only to be told he's the worst guitarist ever. He hits rock bottom when a strange woman offers him a Faustian bargain where he can become the greatest guitarist ever and show everyone. He takes it and gets everything he ever wanted including on-demand groupies and he takes over the band who kicked him out but he has to kill a bunch of people and feed off their energy in order to survive. His downfall happens when he lusts after the band manager (Traci Lords), who is the fiancé of one of the band and is impressed by his skill but not by him. Pretty basic movie, very B-grade and low budget, so it's a bit clunky and there's a bit of nudity from a number of actresses thrown in but the credits are terrible so I had to do a bit of work just to get some of the names and still couldn't work out some. I've had this movie lying about for a while, I think I got spooked by how bad the credits were but after capping a bunch of sporadically credited Hong Kong movies, might as well just put it out there and hope I'm right.

Update for 1 November...

90s weekend again, following up last week's update with another Peter Greenaway movie, this time the very busy Prospero's Books. There's a lot of nudity from extras, too much to cap, so I've put up a few choice videos. Not many actresses in the movie. French actress Isabelle Pasco is about the only one with a substantial role while others including Ute Lemper and Australian singer (and sometimes actress) Deborah Conway sing a song fully clothed. Mad movie, a ridiculous amount going on yet Sir John Gielgud is the only one that speaks. Mark Rylance in a very early role also appears for quite a while.

Also below is the grim first movie (well all her movies are pretty grim) from Scottish director Lynne Ramsay where a young boy drowns in the first minute and it doesn't get any less cheery from there. Tough going but a strangely hopeful movie amongst the piles of rubbish and a town overrun by rats.
