Still more new movies, this time a couple of new Australian releases both starring American actresses. Some quick synopses:

No Such Thing As Monsters is a redneck horror thriller where a couple go on a camping trip and are joined by three sisters and a hanger-on who at first seem friendly but they end up kidnapping the couple and forcing the man to impregnate the sisters while possibly using the hanger-on to impregnate the woman. The woman attempts to get out of their predicament but it is not until she is about to give birth that she has her best chance. An interesting concept that is disappointingly under written and there's a number of questions that are either not answered or only half answered.

Swimming For Gold is a family movie where a fallen young swim star (Peyton List) has to take a job coaching a male high school swim team in Australia. She slacks off considerably not interested in the job and is rooming with her arch-enemy (Lauren Esposito) but is won over eventually and helps the team to success. Eh, it is what it is, not for me. Also good to know there are two fairly well known actresses named Peyton List, not confusing in the slightest. And Lauren Esposito has strangely being under my radar of Australian actresses, having never seeing any of the Conjuring movies and this is her first Australian movie.

Update for 25 October...

More new movies. Escape: Puzzle Of Fear is another in the new subgenre of thrillers set in an escape room but this movie isn't so much about the escaping the escape room and escaping the baffling plot that is still unravelling as I type. From the maker of the also not great Coven, this barely 80 minute movie takes forever to get to the point and doesn't get to the escape room to about 30 minutes in but not before a bit of needless nudity (yeh!) and so many little flashback stories that somehow end up being the plot. Otherwise the plot about a group of annoying rich arseholes who go to an escape room for a laugh only to discover that one of the group is a serial killer, well at least one of them is, Then there's bizarre sub plots to pad out the movie to 80 minutes include one involving Lili Bordán (sadly nothing to cap this time), who runs the escape room as a tight ship and a cameo from Nicholas Turturro, a Spike Lee regular, as one of the participants in the escape room who disappears until during the credits which is only topped in the bafflement by him being cast as a KKK member in BlacKKKlansman. An absolute mess of movie.

Update for 20 October...

More from the 90s DVD collection. Had another go at Out In Fifty after it failed yesterday and I think I salvaged it as best I can. Movie is a B-grade indie with extended cameos from Mickey Rourke during that late 90s nadir in his career and Peter Greene, who appeared in so many cool movies during the 90s. The writer/directors were also the stars so it's an erratic mess of a movie, one character is so annoying that his demise feels like a celebration. Female lead Nina Ofenböck only ever appeared in this movie and you have to wonder if she was the girlfriend of one of writer/directors because she's pretty awful. Nikki Bokal didn't have much of a career either but she did have a nude scene in the 90s Van Damme movie Inferno. Just one of those movies that could only get made in the 90s.

Table For One is one crazy movie, Rebecca De Mornay making her The Hand That Rocked The Cradle character look sensible, check out some of the clips below for some absolute nuttiness. Seem to be coming across a few Michael Rooker movies lately, strangely the least crazy in this movie but having to deal with De Mornay at full nuttiness definitely helped there. I would try to explain the plot to you but I need someone to explain it to me first...

Man, I hope there's a HD release of Bug Buster sometime soon, that Katherine Heigl scene really needs it.

Interestingly, The Sunlit Night is listed at 106 minutes on IMDB but the release version is only 78 minutes, a massive 28 minutes taken out from its disastrous Sundance 2019 showing. Well someone has put up a list of what was in the festival release and a couple of scenes of nudity, presumably featuring Jenny Slate are missing from the release. Below is the list and I've put a tick next to what appears in the movie. I doubt we'll see the original cut considering the movie was quietly dumped onto VOD services. I mean if you're going to dump the movie, you might as well leave it as it was originally intended.

Update for 15 October...

Time for some new releases, including a bunch of women taking baths or showers.

Also, a rare movie made in Azerbaijan, The Bra, a silent/non-verbal movie where a retiring train driver finds a bra that gets stuck on the train during his final run and he goes about finding out who is belongs to. That's pretty much it, a completely baffling Cinderella story where instead of a glass slipper, a man tries to find the owner of a rogue bra. It's has some interest and the train driver finds new meaning in his life in a most unorthodox way but there's some pretty dodgy scenes, one including a breast cancer screening bus and poisoning people which isn't as funny as it's supposed to be. It's definitely something different, never boring and it does have Paz Vega turn up for a few minutes, so it's not without merit.

As the movie is non-verbal, none of the characters have names so the credits are a bit trial and error although fairly descriptive but I'm pretty sure I have correctly listed the actresses from the movie.

Update for 12 October...

90s weekend update continues. Never did see Wilder Napalm back in the day but I sure saw the trailer to the movie at the front of every second VHS release, must've seen it dozens of times. The movie itself is a totally oddball affair about two estranged brothers (Dennis Quaid and Arliss Howard) who have the ability to start fires with their minds, who go to war for the affection of the brother's wife (Debra Winger). Billed as a comedy but it's not so much funny as wacky with many odd moments plus Debra Winger's character is a total manic pixie dream girl adding to wackiness and don't forget the barbershop quarter masquerading as the fire department. So wacky! It's not a bad movie but the wackiness is at full volume all the time that it just never has the opportunity to be anything better than an OK movie. I felt like I just downed a whole bag of sugar after finishing this near 2 hour movie. Interestingly, it's written by Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame so if you like those shows this might work for you.

Update for 11 October...

90s weekend. Never heard of Where The Air Is Cool & Dark and it's a very independent movie set in a logging town in Washington State about a man who has given up alcohol, who comes back to his home town from New York to make a short film but he's broke and he is really helping his shonky friend look after his indoor weed plantation while doing some logging work to fill in time which he ends up quitting after watching a man die from a fallen branch. He meets an old girlfriend and starts up with her again but it goes badly. He finally gets around to making that film and meets another woman who helps him make it but there's something lingering in the background which will destroy that relationship. By very in dependant, I don't mean what indie film were called in the 90s, I mean this was done very cheaply with mostly non-actors and the story is a total slow burn but I gotta say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would but it does push an ending it probably didn't need. If you want to see a real indie movie, this is well worth a look.

Still going with the Abel Ferrara movies and finally Bad Lieutenant, a totally nuts movie about a cop who is very much on the edge in everything he does and that's when he's not breaking every other law and doing so much drugs. The movie is so dense with detail even when not much happens and that's thanks to a baseball series that plays out in the background but mostly it's Harvey Keitel's raw performance, who's way too convincing and engrossing that even when shit gets truly out there, and it does often, Keitel grounds it amazingly well. Can't believe it's taken this long to see this movie, should've happened a lot earlier and up there with King Of New York as Ferrera's best from the 90s. Wonder how much Uncut Gems was influenced by this movie because there's some stark similarities between the two...

Not much to say about the others except Drop Dead Gorgeous was Amy Adams first movie, which I did not know.

Update for 9 October...

A couple more movies in today's update, both from 2002. My Name Is Tanino is technically Rachel McAdams's first movie but she was also in The Hot Chick and a very sensational TV movie called Guilt By Association which were released earlier than this movie. Also it's an Italian movie that is mostly in Italian with Rachel speaking for a fair portion of the movie before it moves away from her character. On the other hand, Sex And The Teenage Mind is absolute garbage, a dreadful movie obviously cashing in on the success of American Pie but with some absolutely awful and humiliating jokes and a plot so baffling including a final act which is not even conceivable but I saw it and still don't believe what happened. Definitely amongst the worst films I've ever seen and yet there's some decent stuff to cap in the movie.

Update for 4 October...

Another week, another 90s update. Mostly old Showtime movies in this update. Also Whispers In The Dark, another in the long line of mystery thrillers where the main character is a psychiatrist, this time played by Annabella Sciorra. I thought I hadn't seen this movie before but the second Alan Alda turned up, I remembered that he was the killer but I still struggled to remember much of the movie save for the nude hanging scene and also remembered the cassette tape reveal/confession. And it's still a pretty forgettable movie, the love interest is played by Jamey Sheridan who you'd never guess in a million years but Anthony LaPaglia leaves an impression as a dumb cop who manages to work out who did it to his detriment. Then again back in the 90s, LaPaglia was always a cop, even in a comedy movie like So I Married An Axe Murderer or the Australian movie The Custodian.

Personally, I much prefer the director's cut of Color Of Night when it comes to murder mysteries featuring psychiatrists.

Update for 2 October...

A couple more Australian movies now in HD. I'm not gonna lie, I'm completely surprised Point Of No Return got a HD upgrade by Umbrella, a long forgotten movie that didn't even have a local DVD release and was actually made-for-TV. I'm not complaining, there's some brief nudity from Nikki Coghill that could always do with an upgrade, just completely unexpected. Also completely forgot Marcus Graham plays dual roles as himself and his brother in the dodgiest looking wig and moustache and it all comes clear why this movie is long forgotten.

Also bold of the makers to call a movie Point Of No Return a year after the Bridget Fonda La Femme Nikita remake. Sure, that movie was renamed The Assassin in Australia, but still.

Update for 1 October...

Redux time and a couple of Australian movies now in HD. Haven't seen Black Water in a while, a not bad crocodile horror movie and I've been meaning to recap it and have only just found a HD copy of it, just in time for the sequel Black Water 2: Abyss. Nothing to cap from that movie and it's basically the same movie as the original including who remains at the end but this time it's set in a cave. It even has a similar pregnancy sub-plot but in the sequel it's a tortured story line involving cheating partners which just gets in the way of the crocodile chomping. Otherwise, it's not bad either.
