Update for 29 September...

A couple of 90s Rose McGowan movies from the DVD collection for today's update.

This is going to age me but one of first memories of being at university is seeing the poster for The Doom Generation everywhere, you know the one that looks exactly like the Pulp Fiction poster. Anyway, I never got around to watching the movie until now and unsurprisingly it's a pretty typical Gregg Araki movie. Lots of sex with ambiguous sexuality, inexplicably violent and a wacky humour that still pervades his movies/TV shows. Technically Rose's first movie although she had a small role in Encino Man.

(Added 1/12/2023) Just a quick note, all the videos below are pretty much as they were on the DVD except for this shot below that is conspicuously missing from the Bluray version of the movie. It's a brief two or three frames and very odd it doesn't appear, no idea why.

I've never seen Lewis & Clark & George either but mainly because it never got released in Australia and barely got a release generally. Hell, I'd never had heard of it if wasn't for knowing of Rose's brief nude scene in the movie. The movie itself is the most 90s concept ever, a road movie about escaped criminals looking for a treasure with the help of Rose's character.

Update for 28 September...

Digging into some DVDs and I've talked about Wild Side before but I had never capped it until now. Wild Side was released in 1995 straight-to-video and mostly went unwatched. This paragraph from IMDB sums up what went wrong better than I can:

After the movie's release, the director Donald Cammell committed suicide, possibly caused by what happened with the movie. Strangely though there was an effort to get Cammell's cut of the movie released and in 1999 the movie was edited to notes made by Cammell and was given a video/DVD release in 2000 with some love but not much more than it got from it's initial release.

My memories of learning of the movie was that Picture magazine (the Australian softcore mag) had a spread featuring the nude scenes from the movie possibly years after it's release once Anne Heche became more famous. So I decided to take a look at the movie and remember liking it as a good little B-grade thriller with a crazy, baffling plot and a great over-the-top performance from Christopher Walken but also a fairly decent lead performance from Heche, just before she broke out. I also watched the director's cut but I don't remember it having that much of an impact on me.

Rewatching the two different cuts of the movie reveals that the main difference between the two is that the director's cut lingers on scenes for what seems like forever, has a more relaxed mood where the plot isn't really the focus and ends in a fairly ambiguous way. It is also 20 minutes longer and feels every bit of it. The original cut is more of a straight forward thriller with an unambiguous ending also longer sex scenes, particularly the Heche/Chen lesbian scene which makes sense as the distributors are trying to sell a sexy thriller. It's also clear that the relationship between Walken's and Chen's character is based on the writer/director team's own relationship. I like both versions although I don't really have a favourite cut as both work in their own way.

I had been waiting for a HD release of the movie before capping it but it looks very like that's not happening any time soon (cue it becoming available before the end of the year just to piss me off). As I said above, all of the sex scenes have different edits and there is more nudity in the original cut. The collages are made from the original cut as being in fullscreen it had more to work with.

Update for 25 September...

Another bunch of 10 Australian short films. I've chosen the short films featured in the last two updates at random from a pile that I looked at years ago, so I don't really know what's in them until I look at them again.

Some good stuff in this update. Some brief nudity from Mandahla Rose who had a 6 minute sex/nude scene in the lesbian drama All About E. Lauren Orrell has done a few nude scenes and was one of the waitresses in Sleeping Beauty. Some brief stuff from Eliza Taylor, best known for The 100 and has a very good albeit dark nude scene in The November Man. Also some brief nudity from Millie Samuels who I quite liked seeing turn up in things but I haven't seen for a while and it looks like she's working behind-the-scenes recently, which is a shame.

Update for 21 September...

90s movies time.

Had never seen Rumble in the Bronx until it turned up on SBS World Movies a few weeks back. Plays like an introduction to Jackie Chan movies for the American audience with plenty of crazy stunts particularly that ridiculously fun hovercraft carnage ending and that wacky comedy Chan is known for. The plot feels like it was thrown together as they were making it but it doesn't matter, it's a pretty fun movie. Strangely, it's dubbed but not necessarily by someone else as it's clearly Jackie Chan and co. speaking but it's all clearly done later. Very odd. There's a few sexy scenes from Françoise Yip as the sister of Chan's neighbour who's involved in a gang who beat up (or try to) Chan but then comes to like him.

Remember liking The Chambermaid on the Titanic back when it played on SBS in the late 90s, a movie showing rare subtlety from Spanish director Bigas Luna (Jamón, Jamón, La Teta y La Luna, Huevos De Oro etc.). It's still pretty good, basically about a man (Olivier Martinez) who wins a trip to see the Titanic leave and when there, he gets a knock on the door of his room from a woman (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón) who says she's a chambermaid from the Titanic and needs a place to stay for the night before she leaves. He lets her stay and nothing happens between them but when he gets back home, he thinks his wife (Romane Bohringer) has been cheating on him so he drowns his sorrows at the pub and then starts telling stories about the chambermaid that become wilder as he continues. A crowd listening to the stories develops leading to him going on tour telling these stories. It works really well and becomes more interesting as the stories expand into more erotic adventures. No real nudity in the movie but glad I saw it again.

Update for 18 September...

A couple of recently released Australian movies I've finally checked out. Some quick synopses:

We're Not Here To Fuck Spiders is a 2020 found footage thriller focusing on a house where an undercover police officer Jimmy (Max Brown) has set up cameras to gather evidence of what is going on in the house. Well, what isn't going on. It starts with a little drug dealing then a bikie gang sets up a drug lab in the kitchen that is looked after by a young boy. Two corrupt police officers want the leader of the house Anton (Lindsay Farris) and his gang for an undisclosed job. It also turns out that Anton's girlfriend Effs (Stephanie King) is an undercover cop but she cops the worst of it as Anton is a violent, moody psychopath who wields a sword in his spare time. Then the undisclosed job happens and what was going to be the final piece of evidence of the crimes of the house turns into a matter of life and death for everyone. I usually hate found footage films because they are all so contrived, this movie lets the cameras run and it takes a while to garner what is going on. When it does, it's a pretty by-the-numbers paranoid violent thriller that probably could've been told better without the static cameras. Not all that bad but there's got to be a better way to make a movie than with found footage.

Love You Like That is a 2021 romantic comedy where a naked woman washes up on the beach of the coastal town of Seafront Sands. It turns out she has amnesia and doesn't know her name so she calls herself the name of the beach MIm (Allira Jaques). After meeting a whole bunch of locals, she is given a tour of the town by Harrison (Mitchell Hope) who seems to have a strong connection to Mim but he doesn't know why. Everywhere she goes, Mim leaves an indelible impression of everyone but it is with Harrison where she'll change his life forever. But why and who is Mim really? Silly romantic comedy that starts off in a promising manner but then has a badly handled plot twist which leads to a very schmaltzy happy ending. Not completely bad but is more than a little convenient about where it's going.

Got a free month on streaming platform Stan, so that's how I found Love You Like That plus a bunch of other Australian movies I hadn't seen elsewhere although they had nothing to cap. I screen captured the video so it's good quality but I don't like doing screen captures. If it becomes available in another way I'll redo the video. Also recently realised that 'we're not here to fuck spiders' is a very Australian saying, could've sworn it was known overseas but it apparently isn't. It's basically a colloquial way of saying we've got other things to do.

Update for 3 September...

A bunch of recent Australian movies from around 2017-2018 plus a few short films from that period. Some quick synopses:

Hot Mess is about Loz (Sarah Gaul) who is about to have a bad week or so starting with self-sabotaging her chance at a writing residency and then she meets Dave after a long dry spell and immediately hits it off with him. But she becomes super obsessive over what he means for her and then they have sex and Dave starts to cool on her. This isn't helped by a disaster of a night when she meets his friends. OK movie but Loz is a hard character to like not helped by her penchant for self-sabotage. Plays as a black comedy and has a few amusing moments but also has that cringe type of humour which is a bit hit and miss.

Phoenix Rising is a revenge thriller where Anna (Belle Nicholas) loses her mind when her daughter is murdered by a sex offender who is then let off and given protection. She spends some time in a mental institution after a suicide attempt. After getting shock treatment and meeting another patient, Anna gets a new focus, escapes the institution and hides out with a police officer friend. She becomes an avenging angel, helping a police officer get his daughter back and then goes about finding her daughter's killer but soon finds that he is being protected by a powerful paedophile ring. Typical revenge thriller that gets a little silly but tries hard.

Watch The Sunset is a one-take thriller when a man takes a woman from a bikie gang which sets off a chain of events that will lead to his daughter being kidnapped by the bikie gang leader. He tries to get his daughter back while trying to reconcile his ex but it's going to take a whole lot for him to pull it off and then get away. Technically proficient and the story is fine once it gets going but runs into the issues like long periods of nothing and it's a 60 minute movie that is dragged out to the more sellable 80 minutes. But once the movie gets going, it's actually pretty good.
