Update for 28 July...

Some more 90s movies. Simon Sez is cheap and nasty Euro comedy thriller starring Dennis Rodman, so there were no high hopes for this movie. And while the movie is bad, Rodman is the least of its problems. The plot is near incomprehensible, something about people trying to kidnap a woman played by Kristin Davis clone Natalia Cigliuti which includes the worst villain ever seen on screen and apparently her father, I've got no idea. Also there's something about a CD from the CIA that everyone wants and Dane Cook is given possession of. Dane Cook is the comic relief and well, he's certainly in the movie and he does so much mugging. There's one scene where he randomly imitates a dinosaur that I think is still going and there's no way that scene was written in the script. The fight scenes are some low rent wire-fu bullshit that is done by a decent stunt choreographer but most of it is extremely unrealistic looking. Very little to recommend in this movie, the type of movie that feels like a tax write-off and a holiday.

Update for 27 July...

90s update. Another Tom DiCillo movie (Living In Oblivion, Box Of Moon Light, Delirious). Hadn't seen The Real Blonde, a pretty random and fairly plotless comedy about a group of people who are in the same social circle. Not much happens as it focuses more on character and even then, the character arcs are thin. Nothing unusual for a DiCillo movie but I just didn't get into this movie like the others even though there are some funny moments. Very much a 90s indie comedy, the type of movie that doesn't really get made any more. DiCillo made one more movie in the 90s, his first movie, Johnny Suede, but I haven't been able to find a HD version of that movie, surprisingly as it does star Brad Pitt and the female lead is Australian actress Alison Moir, making the movie perfect for the Australian/NZ actresses overseas section of the site.

Update for 19 July...

90s weekend update featuring a couple of Spanish movies.

Los Años Bárbaros is a drama about two Spanish men who are forced into a prison work camp in 1948 after being arrested for vandalising their university. A friend helps set a plan up with a French man and his two American female friends to come and help the two men escape from the prison camp. They then try to get to France while avoiding a ruthless university cop. A couple of American actresses in this movie and they both have a nude swim, so there's that bonus for this OK movie that feels like it should be a comedy but isn't really that funny.

La Teta y La Luna (The Tit And The Moon) is another wacky comedy from Bigas Luna, apparently the third in a trilogy of themed movies (the other two being Jamón, Jamón and Huevos De Oro). This only may be the most blatant of the trilogy and that's saying something. Basically, a young boy gets breast envy when his mother gives birth to his brother and finds a substitute in a newly arrived French performer (Mathilda May). Meanwhile his older brother gets a huge crush on the French woman to the point that he comes between her and her Le Pétomane-like lover. Absolutely silly fun and holds up ridiculously well just as Jamón, Jamón and Huevos De Oro also do. I think this is because the trilogy of movies aren't at all serious and are basically satires of certain type of person, usually men and in this case, a young boy, who get everything they want and still want more. Also, the other two movies star Javier Bardem and wouldn't you know it, he has a blink and you'll miss cameo in this movie, even credited under a different name. And funnily enough I looked up what Laura Mañá was in recently and it looks like she's quit acting but she actually directed a new movie I recently capped, Te Quiero, Imbécil. How did I not see this when I capping it?

Suburban Wildlife is a drama about four friends in the days after graduating from university and are about to go their separate ways into the world, with a couple going overseas, so this is their last days together. Basically follows the group from party to party before one last blow out at a country house. Not much more than that. Not bad, basically a wistful movie where the friends worry about the future and making the most of their last days together.

Update for 14 July...

A couple of new Australian movie. Some quick synopses:

Conscious is a thriller where a reclusive psychiatrist who is haunted by the death of his wife is coerced back into restarting his radical therapy practice to help save two women who seem to have no conscience or no fear/anxiety. The therapy is basically legal torture plus the use of a dream recorder which gives him an idea of what haunts the women. But the longer the women are there, the closer the psychiatrist comes to his own truth which shocks both woman who try to escape from his remote property. Barely 70 minutes long and very slow to get going, the movie is underdeveloped and too long but I'm not sure what would be the better option. Needs more work...

Relic is a haunted house horror thriller where a daughter and a granddaughter are asked to go to the grandmother's home to help find her as she seems to be missing. But a couple of days later, she turns up as if nothing has happened. Slowly but surely the grandmother's cognitive and physical attributes begin to decline but is it dementia or a something more sinister from inside the house. Not bad, a bit of slow burn that doesn't take off until the final act but is fairly watchable.

Update for 13 July...

More 90s movies. Saw Blood And Concrete back in the day and it's one of those crime comedies movies that came out before Quentin Tarantino started making movies, so it's unsullied by the need to be cool. The movie ends up being a quirky comedy with wacky characters mixed with incredibly straight characters and a wild plot which takes forever to resolve. Billy Zane plays a non-violent thief who gets caught up in a murder of an associate who seems to have stolen a whole bunch of love drugs that makes people horny from a crim who no-one seems to have ever seen until now. He accidentally saves a suicidal singer (Jennifer Beals) and they fall for one another as the thief gets deeper into the plot and closer to death. Silly movie but fairly watchable with a couple of baffling scenes where characters just swear for a minute or so and a dead body remains in a pool despite being uncovered by a jaded old cop. Then Harry Shearer turns up as a former associate of the thief and is the straightest man ever. OK movie and probably better for being made before Pulp Fiction.

Code Name: Wolverine is a mostly forgettable TV movie where Antonio Sabato Jr's kid gets kidnapped twice including by being captured in a net thrown from a helicopter while swimming in the sea which is probably the best scene in the movie. The only real interest for me is the female lead Traci Lind, who I quite like and she has a couple of sexy scenes in this movie. Gotta find more movies with her in them but she had such a short career.

Update for 12 July...

90s weekend update again. Never heard of Lover Girl before, I doubt it was ever released in Australia as we didn't get all of those 90s indie movie, mostly just the more well known ones. Pretty simple story about a 16 year-old girl (Tara Subkoff) who is left to fend for herself when her mother then sister (Kristy Swanson) rejects her. She meets her sister's neighbour (Sandra Bernhard) who works at a 'massage' parlour and has a habit of picking up strays so she ends up staying her. Then the teenage girl sees what the neighbour does and becomes intrigued and decides to have a go at it, entertaining a young mechanic who gets a crush on her. After being aghast at what happened (well, it is illegal), the neighbour and her fellow workers decide to let her continue as long as the owner isn't around. It turns out it's not as easy as it seems and when her sister finds out, she wants in too causing more problems. Very much of a 90s indie comedy vibe which might suggest why it's produced by 90s indie favourite Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging, Grace of My Heart, the witching segment of Four Rooms), the movie has a playful vibe and while it's set in a massage parlour, there's no nudity and only one hand job in the movie. Not the greatest movie and very much of its time but watchable enough and I kinda like Tara, particularly in Larry Clark's baffling and sexed-up re-imagining of the B-movie Teenage Caveman. Also with Sandra Bernhard in the movie, it reminds me that she was in an Australian movie in the 90s called Dallas Doll that I really should dig out a copy of as she has a few nude scenes in that movie. Think it might be Rose Byrne's first movie too.

Also, there is no way in hell this movie gets made today. Not a chance...

Update for 7 July...

More from the 90s DVD collection. The only thing I knew about the British gangster drama Rancid Aluminium was that it was roundly dismissed upon release and went straight-to-VHS here. Watching it years later, I didn't find the movie to be that, well, rancid, but it is a mostly forgettable movie that's a baffling mix of reluctant gangster drama and baby-making comedies where in this case, Rhys Ifans' reluctant gangster can't get his wife pregnant but seems to be able to get anyone else he fucks pregnant including the daughter of the Russian gangster he's doing a deal with. A fair portion of the movie is made up of the Russian gangsters making Rhys Ifans' character go through a ridiculous amount of tests just to get their trust. No idea what's going on in this part including them fake killing the Rhys Ifans' character. I was expecting a bad movie but got a ridiculously pointless one instead. Probably would've preferred a bad movie...

Update for 6 July...

Digging randomly into the 90s DVD collection. Sacrifice is listed as a 2000 movie but the movie itself says it's a 1999 movie and I'm making the rules, so it gets a run here. An interesting twist on the serial killer movie mixed with a fair bit of sleaziness but even having a violent killer played by Michael Madsen escape from prison to find the serial killer that killed his daughter isn't enough to devolve into an incredibly strange killer who isn't seen until 2/3rd in and a motive that doesn't make a lot of sense. But Sacrifice is interesting enough for a watch. And Double Cross is an incredibly low rent movie, so much so it barely has credits and heaven knows who any of those women below are. No idea how I came across it...
