Update for 31 August...

90s weekend continues. Cold Heaven is a strange but toothless early 90s movie directed by Nicolas Roeg in his gun-for-hire phase of his career (which would later include Full Body Massage) but still working with Theresa Russell. Basically, a woman (Theresa Russell) is going on one last holiday with her husband (Mark Harmon) before telling him she's leaving for a doctor colleague (James Russo) of his but her husband has an accident during the holiday and dies, which seems to solve her problems until his body disappears from the hospital. She goes home and plans to move on with the doctor but then her now brain injured husband tracks her down and things change completely. Oh and she keeps having a vision that troubles her so she goes to a priest who is befuddled by what she describes, so he gets his junior (Will Patton) to look into it. A lot more religious than I was expecting considering there's barely a mention of this until about an hour into the movie and then it goes off onto a strange and unrewarding tangent. The movie has some interest but it cops out completely and ends in the most toothless way possible. Roeg of 20 years previous would've gone for the jugular but this ends in a wimper. Disappointing...

Update for 30 August...

90s weekend with the early 90s erotic noir thriller Bitter Harvest. Basically the story of a dumb farm boy (Stephen Baldwin) who's never left home and after his father dies, he's left alone with the farm. Soon, a roaming woman (Jennifer Rubin) comes across his path and begins to ingratiate herself onto him and it's the first attention he's ever gotten from a woman. Then a real estate broker (Patsy Kensit) attempts to buy the farm from him and so she ingratiates herself onto the farm boy and life has never been better. At the same time, there's a bank robbing spree in the area and it comes close to home when the local bank is robbed when the farm boy is there and then mysteriously ends up at his farm harassing the roaming woman and in the commotion, she ends up killing the robber. That's when the two woman hatch a plan to rob a bank using the robber's method as the police don't know the robber is dead and drag the farm boy into it. And then everything changes for the worse. OK movie that rolls along with plenty of sex and then sudden bursts of violence but isn't without some absolute silliness. I mean this movie gives it's dopey main character two women to play with and they both spend a lot of time talking about their respective sisters. Let me see, are they sisters? Now they're making out, oh boy... Then there's Patsy Kensit's accent where she speaks in her normal British accent for most of the movie and then a howler of twist happens in the end where Patsy starts speaking with a southern American accent and then you realise why she spoke normally throughout. Having said that, I'm always up for a noir thriller and plenty of nudity helps.

I had a DVD of Bitter Harvest that I was almost going to cap recently but a HD version came out, so that was a bit of luck. I've put both versions up, the fullscreen version shows a bit more in some parts and the widescreen also does in some shots.

Update for 27 August...

Three more New Zealand movies. A couple of recent ones and one from the 80s.

Bridge To Nowhere is a 1986 backwoods thriller where a group of teens go for a weekend away camping and pass a farm run by a middle-aged man (Bruno Lawrence) and his much younger wife (Alison Routledge from The Quiet Earth). Things go badly very quickly. One girl has to bring her younger brother along as a chaperone and he gets bullied by the two teen boys. When a bullock enters their camp ground, one of teen boys tries to shoot it but the older man stops him and breaks his gun. One of the teen boys takes it too far with the girl who brought her brother along and attempts to rape her and goes off in a horny huff, only to happen upon the young wife bathing outside and then watching her and her husband have sex only to be spotted and confronted. The teen boy pulls a gun on the older man and in the commotion, the teen boy gets shot in the chest and killed. The next day the older man comes after the rest of them and they go on the run with no food and no water but find that the only way out is by going by the farm past the crazy older man. Bizarrely underdone and completely filthy survival thriller where the psycho killer doesn't really want to kill his prey and the kids go to seed so fast it's a miracle any survive. It all feels more quaint than a backwoods survival thriller usually is and Bruno Lawrence is always watchable while Alison Routledge is wasted in put upon role. A strange uninteresting and very New Zealand feeling misfire.

Jake is a 2013 comedy movie where an annoying man named Jacob wakes up one morning to a man claiming that he has been recast as Jacob by someone unknown and Jacob is now cut-off and is someone else who can do whatever he wants with his new life. This baffles Jacob but no more than when the people in his life don't even recognise him and only recognise the new Jacob, who doesn't even look like him. Jacob can't do anything about it because he has an ankle bracelet that shocks him if he breaks the rules. The new Jacob becomes the perfect Jacob that someone wants him to be while the old Jacob tries to work out what's going on, only to be confronted by the company involved who force him away from the new Jacob so he goes into acting lessons to be someone else. But when it becomes clear the old Jacob doesn't want this, he is chained up and left to fend for himself while the new Jacob begins to get doubts about his new role. Baffling movie that has a semi-interesting concept but blows it by making it completely implausible, none of it making sense and gets more implausible until it's surprisingly nasty ending. The plot involving the girlfriend is so implausible and baffling that I've got no idea why it ended the way it did. I got nothing...

Ghost Shark 2: Urban Jaws is a comedy shark thriller that is apparently a sequel to some movie called Ghost Shark but it seems to be an unrelated comedy shtick. Anyway in Auckland, a bunch of American sounding people are getting killed by a ghost shark that can go on land. The mayor hires a professional ghost animal hunter who doesn't shower and is haunted by the fiance being killed by a ghost shark to kill the shark and he does in a most unusual way. Silly, very low budget movie which doesn't work and is hampered by it's need to always be silly without ever being funny. The idea of a ghost shark is inordinately silly and in a time where stupid shark movies are popular for some reason, a parody was inevitable but the genre is already so ridiculous that doing a parody of the ridiculous is always going to look even stupider the movies they are parodying. And the plot twist involved in killing the shark is so stupid and feels like they ran out of ideas and just went with the first thing they thought of. Just doesn't work in anyway.

Sadly the quality of Bridge To Nowhere isn't the best but I think it's the best it's ever going to be. I got it off Tubi and it's clearly a VHS rip which is perfectly watchable but the dark scenes are pitch black and Alison Routledge's nude scene is mostly in the dark and near impossible to see. I bought a different VHS rip off some site a while back which isn't any better so I guess this is it.

Update for 26 August...

Had a request for a couple of New Zealand movies that have been recently released despite being both filmed in 2014 (Older released just this week), so here we are.

Older is a quarter-life crisis drama where failed movie director Alex (writer/director Guy Pigden) has hit the wall in his life. He has no job and his movie career has stalled, he lives with his parents and plays video games, smokes bongs and masturbates all day and he doesn't have girlfriend. At the wedding of his best friend Henry (Harley Neville) with Isabelle (Samantha Jukes) where he is best man, he bumps into former school friend Jenny (Liesha Ward Knox), who he hasn't seen since school and they immediately hit it off. Also at the wedding is his on and off fling of 10 years, Stephanie (Astra McLaren), who is currently off and with a new date but not for long. After the wedding, Alex asks Jenny back to his parent's house for a nightcap and they end up spooning together but nothing more. In the morning, Jenny leaves and Alex spends the day vomiting although he agrees to see Stephanie for another big night. They end up sleeping with one another and they are definitely back on until she blanks him for days. He visits Jenny's house and she makes them watch his horror movie, they smoke a joint, chat and then have sex and they hit it off. Stephanie texts him the next day and wants to go out and during the night they bump into Jenny and her date which goes badly and then Stephanie goes off with someone else. Alex goes home but then decides to call Jenny early the next morning and Alex ends up going to her place and they have sex. Alex's dad has a chat with him and asks him to move out of home. A few days later his mother calls crying saying his dad has died. He struggles through the funeral but has a good chat with Jenny before going to Stephanie's place and staying the night. Jenny takes Alex camping and everything seems to be going great with them and he even starts a new screenplay then Jenny calls him and says she is pregnant. Alex acts in the worst possible way and during the argument Jenny tells him that Stephanie doesn't want him and that she slept with the married Henry recently. Jenny dumps Alex and his life spirals further. Can Alex figure his life out and get with Jenny? Affable drama with likeable leads in Pigden and Ward Know who make the movie more enjoyable than its stock-standard plot. While it's pretty obvious how it all goes, Henry and Jenny gel incredibly well and when their tenuous relationship hits the skids, it hits hard. Sure, it all ends predictably and too easily but it would be a shame if they didn't end up with one another. Worth a look if you are into romantic comedies.

Interestingly, I found this movie on Tubi and began capping it from that, albeit from a 720p source, looking to upgrade later. What was cappable in the movie was a bit disappointing as the original trailer from 2014 suggested a lot more sex and nudity, but it was fine. I then looked up to see where else it was available to watch and found that an uncut version with 4 minutes of extra sex and nudity was available on Vimeo (only to Aus/NZ) and I've never bought something so quick. And they weren't lying, there's far more to cap in the uncut version. So lookout for that if you see it on Tubi/Amazon Prime, it's the 'International' edited version.

Orphans & Kingdoms is a drama where Jeremy (Colin Moy) reluctantly enters his luxury home late at night and is confronted by a young woman who attempts to placate him before he is hit over the head and knocked out by a younger boy with a hockey stick. Earlier in the day, three siblings get off ferry at Waiheke Island and cause a bit of mayhem. Led by the eldest Tibs aka T (Hanelle Harris), she has two brothers, Jesse (Jesse James Rehu Pickery) and the youngest Key (Calae Hignett-Morgan) and they snatch a bag from a woman, do some light shoplifting, some graffiti before deciding to find one of the luxury houses to stay in. Key breaks into one house and disarms the alarm and they enjoy the house briefly before the police come around to check the house. They hide and manage to avoid being seen. They party on through the night before Jeremy comes back home. After Jeremy is hit on the head, there is a mad scramble to pilfer the house before leaving but in the rush, Jesse climbs up on a chair to look for something in a high cabinet and falls off the chair, breaking his ankle. A concussed Jeremy mistakes him for his son Scott. They tie up Jeremy and Key decides to kill him with a knife with T and Jeremy begging for him to do kill him talking him out of it. We see that Jeremy found his son hanging in the garage. It becomes clear that Jeremy is needed to help them with Jesse so T cuts him loose but Jeremy begs them to leave. Jeremy sees Key with his son's hat on and he loses it, attacking Key and forcing Key and T to clean up the house and then make a splint for his leg. After settling Jesse down, T helps Jeremy with his sores and then attempts to seduce him but he's not interested. They go to sleep and wait for the morning to go to the hospital. The next day, they argue before the policeman from yesterday knocks on the door checking if Jeremy's alright and asks if he's seen the siblings but he says he hasn't. They go to the local hospital but their are pictures of the siblings on the noticeboard, so they have to take the ferry to Auckland. OK drama and at barely 70 minutes, it packs a bit in with a fairly basic plot but there's isn't very much at stake and it ends fairly anti-climatically with no suggestion anything changes for the better or that the kids learned anything from the experience other than managing to barely escape from their frolic. The locations looks great, a rare movie set on Auckland's Waiheke Island (see also Death Warmed Up). It's a low stakes movie but a fairly watchable one.

Update for 23 August...

90s weekend update comes around once more after a week off. Your Friends & Neighbors is the second movie from Neil LaBute after his much talked about debut In The Company Of Men and this movie is basically a more widely spread version of that movie. More hateful and more miserable people and with a bigger, better known cast yet it still looks like a filmed play. The movie goes around in circles and gets a more than a little repetitive and just gets more annoying by the minute. At least there's some nudity from Amy Brenneman right at the end of the movie, otherwise forget it.

Watching Can't Hardly Wait now feels like a complete nostalgia trip more than anything else. Every time someone pops up, all I was thinking was 'Oh, they're in this' and this just kept happening. With She's All That, it feels like 90% of young Hollywood from the 90s were in either of those movies. The movie itself has a pretty forgettable and predictable plot, nothing really stands out but of all the 90s movies I've watched/rewatched in recent years, no film has had the nostalgia trip than this movie does. Very odd.

Another batch of HD reduxes including one for the first time on this site, Trois 3: The Escort. I capped all of the Trois movies back on the old site but this is the first of that series available in HD. Hell, I capped the first Trois movie off VHS as it's the only way it's been available here. Update for 10 August...

One more for the 90s weekend update, this time the 1991 incest drama Close My Eyes. Somehow I've never seen this movie until now despite being a fan of Saskia thanks to Traps, but that's not because I didn't seek it out. Remember seeing the movie got a surprisingly disparaging mention in one of those soft core mags Picture or People, can't remember which, mainly for the incest angle (boy how times have changed...), but the movie was almost impossible to find locally. Until one day I was foraging through some video shop in the mid-2000s a fair way from home but somewhere I went to frequently and found a VHS copy of Close My Eyes. But some absolute wanker wouldn't let me sign up despite being signed up at stores further away from home than that, so I was thwarted. It's never been released on DVD in Australia and that was the only place I've seen it in Australia. So my Saskia Reeves kick hit a dead-end, hell I even capped the long forgotten Antonia And Jane off a VHS that I got from a video store that was further away than the fascist video store that rejected me.

    
    

Anyway, finally got to watch/cap Close My Eyes, very much a movie from Stephen Poliakoff, a hoity-toity drama about a brother and sister (Clive Owen and Saskia Reeves) who have a close relationship but are mostly in other parts of the country before the brother moves to London and their close relationship oversteps the line of being siblings to being lovers. The sister desperately tries to put an end to it, even marrying a toff (Alan Rickman) to distract herself but that doesn't work and the brother only wants it more. As far as it goes, the movie is not bad but the ending does seem a little anti-climatic for something as taboo as what happens here but the drama is fine otherwise. It also touches on the themes of the time like AIDS and climate change but they are not the main themes and frankly, the AIDS angle is a tad timid.

This just reminds me that I need to cap more from Saskia Reeves. I think I have a DVD of Butterfly Kiss somewhere.

Update for 9 August...

90s weekend update once more with a couple of early 90s movies starring Drew Barrymore.

An early entry to the white trash going on a killing rampage genre from Matthew Bright (Freeway, Freeway II: Confessions Of A Trickbaby), Guncrazy is slightly more restrained than the later movies but are of a similar vein only without the fairy tale angles of the Freeway movies. Barrymore plays a teenage girl abused by all the males in her life who becomes penpals with a jailed criminal (James Le Gros) while getting into guns and then she kills her absent mother's boyfriend after he rapes her. Her penpal gets paroled and comes to see her and they fall for one another but after getting rid of the mother's boyfriend's body, they are confronted by two of the girl's former classmates and in the scuffle, they kill the classmates. After the snake-handler priest who is charged with helping the penpal is bitten by one of his snakes and put in hospital, the penpal's parole officer (Michael Ironside) decides to put him back in prison despite being married to the teenage girl. Well, that's when the crime spree goes into full swing and they go on the run. OK movie, far more watchable and less obsessed with the extremes as the Freeway movies, but it's very much a white trash crime spree movie and one of the early ones in a time when it became a genre of some popularity throughout the 90s.

Sketch Artist is a fairly straightforward murder mystery with a neat hook where a sketch artist (Jeff Fahey) draws the face sketch of a murderer from a witness (Drew Barrymore) and it turns out that it's his wife (Sean Young). So, he makes slight adjustment to the sketch to get his fellow officers off the scent while he decides to do his own investigation trying to prove that his wife is innocent. But, it doesn't go to plan when he becomes the main suspect after the death of the witness. Not bad movie and Fahey is pretty good here, troubled by how little he seems to know about his wife and how their relationship seems to be drifting away.

Update for 3 August...

Time to go through the 90s DVD collection and a very random bunch today. I hadn't seen Deadfall before but knew of its reputation for having Nicolas Cage's most insane performance and it certainly lives up to it, even at levels his Vampire's Kiss performance couldn't match and he eats a cockroach in that one. Near incomprehensible and incredibly loud at all times, it's truly bizarre to watch the actors reacting as if he's just doing some basic acting. How are they not bursting out in laughter at this insanity? It's amazing to think he's two years away from a Best Actor Oscar and he still had time for some roided-up insanity in Kiss Of Death. The whole movie basically stops to a crawl when Cage turns up and he's only in it for about half-an-hour but practically nothing happens in this time until he tries to kill James Coburn's character. Then there's the wig and fake moustache which hilariously go missing when he's about to be killed off. What is going on? Did I mention that it's directed by Cage's brother, so that probably explains him getting away with what he does. Also written by the bloke who won the best screenplay Oscar for The Green Book, his first movie.

The movie itself is a pretty stock-standard con artist thriller that has the exact same con performed as some other 90s movie I watched/capped recently but I can't remember what it was called and it's going to annoy me until I find out what that movie was. That's not the end of the silliness in the movie though, everyone's having a go but is so much more subdued, it almost feels normal. Michael Biehn amps up just to keep up with Cage. Coburn plays two nutjob brothers and can't help himself. Charlie Sheen even finds some eccentricity in his brief role as a pool shark. Angus Scrimm from the Phantasm movies is his same old nuttiness, this time with scissor-like hands for some reason. As I said, the movie is pretty stock-standard stuff but the nuttiness is so high, it's hard to take seriously.
