Update for 26 February...

For the Australian Classics weekend update here's a couple of mid-2000s low budget 'near-silent' movies.

Jupiter Love is a 2007 ahhh... thriller I guess... where X (Nikka Kalashnikova) is building up to her first exhibition when she comes across Y (Michael André) while driving along a country road who drives alongside her and films her then wants to get to know her but she's not interested. They meet a second time along the country road and Y becomes more violent towards X which leads to her escaping but not without her camera which has her latest exhibition piece on it. Y becomes obsessed with finding and wanting X but she's always one step ahead and will do anything to get rid of him. I think... Honestly, I have no idea what the hell this movie was on about and there's very little going on to even parse a plot from. Considering the entire movie was made by two people, it's impressive they got as far as they did if only it made some sort of sense. Also marks for getting a movie this incomprehensible a release on DVD when there's plenty of Australian movie that make sense that didn't/haven't.

Defenceless: A Blood Symphony is a 2004 silent revenge thriller where The Woman (Susanne Hausschmid) has her husband then lover (Erin Walsh) murdered by ruthless property developers because of her opposition to a development on the beach that she loves. The property develops then attack and kill The Woman and her son. 9 months later, The Woman emerges from the surf a shell of her former self, found by a young girl (Bethany Fisher) who helps The Woman get her bearings although now The Woman is a cannibalistic dimwit. Then the girl's stepfather kills the girl and The Woman decides to get revenge. She then finds out about what happened to her before she died and The Woman decides to get revenge on the developers and she does so in the nastiest way possible. Interesting way to tell the age old revenge thriller but once The Woman dies, the movie gets increasingly silly and The Woman becomes a monster who inexplicably starts eating her victims organs. Before she dies she seems like a bit of dimwit but when she comes back it's like her mind is completely wiped. Her turning to cannibalism including eating the remains of her husband is so ridiculous, it's hard to take seriously anything that happens after that. Good idea, silly execution.

Both movies are from US NTSC DVD and filmed in early digital so the quality isn't great but it's DVD quality so it's perfectly fine. The director of Defenceless has a whole bunch of movies from that period and also has some recent stuff that he made in America, some of which are erotic thrillers. Would really to get a hold of some of them as they're either out-of-print or hard-to-find. I should be able to get Trail of Passion, but Fishnet looks like a tough find.

Update for 24 February...

A couple of reduxes of movies I capped in the pre-johnny-moronic.com days, now available on the side and in HD. I even have DVD of both movies I just never got around to capping it until now.

Ted Bundy is a typical Matthew Bright movie (Freeway, Freeway II: Confessions Of A Trickbaby) so extreme violence mixed with zero subtlety. I wouldn't be surprised if some of Ted Bundy is played for laughs, it certainly seems like it. I capped Devil in the Flesh earlier in the month starring Rose McGowan which I'd never seen before but I had capped the sequel back in the day, basically the same movie down to the dopey giving an apple to the teacher scene. This time it takes place in university.

A bunch of 90s Spanish movies including a HD redux.

Really disliked La Mirada del Otro, a movie about a woman who is a sex addict (Laura Morante) who's behaviour becomes more bizarre and unhinged by the minute. Then she poses as a sex worker and gets raped and the movie just goes downhill from there until it's really awful ending. It's hard to have sympathy for her when she has no self-respect and does stupendously horrible things. Plenty of nudity though...

Update for 16 February...

The final of the series is 2013's Casse-Tête Chinois (Chinese Puzzle), set 10 years later, moves the setting to New York after the marriage between Romain Duris' character and Kelly Reilly's character has ended and she's in a new relationship in New York. So he goes there to be close to their children. Coincidentally Cécile de France's character is in New York, so at least he has a friend there. Also Audrey Tautou's character visits from time-to-time and they end up hooking back up.

Interesting to see Li Jun Li, who recently had a prominent role in Babylon, turn up playing a woman who marries Romain Duris' character so that he can get a green card. Never heard of her until a few months ago when I capped Devils and now I'm seeing her everywhere.

I've also included some collages and HD caps from Les Poupées Russes as I ran out-of-time yesterday after a series of frustrating issues which haven't necessarily been resolved. Really wanted to make some collages of Irene Montalà's nude run.

Today's update is from the 2002 French movie L'Auberge Espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) starring Romain Duris as a young man who goes to Spain to live for a job leaving behind his girlfriend (Audrey Tautou) and getting involved with a slew of women both romantically and platonically. Plenty of hot European women in this movie including an early role for Kelly Reilly.

This movie was part of a trilogy which I'll be going through in the coming days. A lot of the characters are recurring throughout the series.

Update for 12 February...

Was thinking that I was hitting the wall with Australian movies to cap but found this incredibly obscure black comedy.

Dallas Doll is 1994 black comedy where school boy Charlie (Jake Blundell) comes back from a failed attempt at mile high sex with his girlfriend only for his girlfriend's seat has been taken by Dallas (Sandra Bernhard). Charlie and Dallas hit it off but they part and he goes back home to his family including mother Ros (Victoria Longley), father Stephen (Frank Gallacher) and sister Rastus (!) (Rose Byrne in her first movie). Then Charlie comes across Dallas once again, a professional golfer/motivational speaker, who has just insulted the members of the local club. He introduces Dallas to his family. First mistake. Second mistake is spying her undressing through the window and falling for her, eventually losing his virginity with Dallas. Back to the first mistake as Dallas decides to make her presence felt in the family Poison Ivy-style by attempting the sleep with everyone, well except Rastus who despises her and is more interested in spotting UFOs. Dallas doesn't stop there as she has her sights on taking over the whole town with her special kind of outsider knowledge. A movie that has an interesting idea but gets too bogged down with Dallas seducing the family and doesn't focus so much on the more interesting stuff regarding Australians blindly thinking anything an American says is worth listening to. Not so much a black comedy as it wants to be but strangely feels like a lighter version of Poison Ivy. Bernhard is interesting casting and is both good and bad throughout the movie andLongley is the real stand out here as someone who becomes emboldened by Dallas's arrival. The movie ends in the stupidest way possible involving UFOs, it might've been better to just cut to credits.

Capped this movie from a VHS rip which is pretty good except for the bottom line being slightly higher than normal. Also the sound is a bit noisy, most notable in the silent scenes and can definitely be heard in the Victoria Longley videos. Highly doubt this movie will ever get a HD upgrade as this is a rare movie made with government money that didn't get a cinema release and struggled to get a VHS release. It's a hard movie to describe and I think that's what turned off distributors more than the quality. The movie seems to have got some Gay and Lesbian cred thanks to Dallas and Ros's relationship which is barely sexual, even the kiss that happens between them seems to have not happened. This may be the only way it'll get any upgrade but I seriously doubt that. If this movie couldn't get a release during the height of Bernhard's popularity, then it's never going to. Just a bit of a mess all round.

Probably the most memorable thing about the movie is how Bernhard absolutely trashed the director during and after making the movie. Worth having a look for. Also interesting to find out that the director was working at the university I went to around the time I went there but I can't for the life of me remember her being there. So weird...

Update for 5 February...

A new Australian movie, the latest in 'Wog Boy' franchise. Not much to say about it except it's basically a rehash of the first movie but now the lead character is 25 years older and an even bigger failure in life. Also a distinct lack of jokes and moments where the entire movie stops so a comedy troupe can do unfunny characters. I know it's easy to hate these movies but I don't hate them and this is just lazy.

Had never heard of Annabel Marshall-Roth before but it seems she's been in America for a while so I went and had quick look around for stuff but couldn't find much just a 2012 Australian short film.

Update for 4 February...

Over to New Zealand for an early 80s small town thriller.

The Scarecrow is a 1982 mystery thriller where in the small town of Klynham, a young girl is brutally murdered and it sends shockwaves through the town. Teen boy Ned (Jono Smith) and his friend Les (Daniel McLaren) steal some hens to get there own eggs so they can get 'rich'. Ned's sister Prudence (Tracy Mann) is burgeoning into a young woman and is starting to get the attention of the local boys. Meanwhile a drifter Hubert (legendary character actor John Carradine) arrives in town and impresses some drunken locals with some tricks while scaring half the town with his intimidating physique. Ned and Les are intimidated by a local gang of boys who will let them join if they can deliver Prudence to them. All the while the bodies start piling up and the town goes into a panic. Then the murders strikes close to home when Prudence's friend Angela goes missing. Interesting mystery movie that's not really all that much of the mystery but it builds the tension in the town quite nicely before it ends in a bit of weird way. The movie has that typical feel of New Zealand movies at the time where there's a horrible darkness under the surface of a fairly normal small town. And while she's not the main character in the movie, Tracy Mann impresses as someone trying to break out of the chains of being a young woman in a small town and then finding herself the target of the killer.

Actually never heard of this movie until I saw it come up on NZ OnDemand, sadly not available in Australia so I had a look around and found this OK DVD rip that could be better but is better than a VHS rip. Tracy Mann still works very regularly in Australian stuff, most recently in the SBS OnDemand series Latecomers. Only brief nudity here, she has better nude scenes in the 1980 movie Hard Knocks. Really need to do a deep dive into more from Tracy Mann as there's quite a bit I haven't seen.
