Update for 26 June...

Something quick for the Australian Classics weekend update.

Phobia is a 1988 low budget two hander set over the final day of a marriage. Renata (Gosia Dobrowolska) is waiting for the arrival home of her husband David (Sean Scully) who arrives home late after drinking. Renata falls asleep and David joins her but Renata turns her back to him. The next morning, David calls Renata's friend Julie who seems to be taking Renata in as she is leaving David but he convinces Julie to make an excuse so she can't take her in. Over the day, David tries to convince Renata that he's worth staying with but the die is cast and the more he realises this, the more desperate and violent he becomes. Can Renata get out alive? Limited drama that even at barely 80 minutes is a bit of a slog but the movie is aided by two very good performances who bring the two characters alive, particularly Scully whose menace grows the longer the movie goes. It's an interesting look at a distintergrating marriage but the movie takes a while to find it's feet. A good domestic drama but not without it's obvious limitations.

I've found two different copies of the movie, both have their own issues. The TV rip is from a Russian site so while the quality of the video is pretty good, the audio is overdubbed with Russian voices. It's not a big issue but it's there. I've also included the VHS rip version below and while the video is OK, the audio is noisy as hell and it was hard to to listen to. It seems to be taped off an SBS airing from the early 90s (there's a very brief bit of David Stratton giving an outro on the rip). It's doubtful that there will be a better version available as it's a barely seen and long forgotten movie that didn't even get a VHS release locally. But MGM has the rights to the movie so there's a small chance that it might find it's way to a streaming service. A very small chance but it's better than most of the movies I've capped recently.

This update has bled into the next update which is a bunch of HD reduxes of Australian movie, all recently released by Umbrella on Bluray and I've finally gotten around to capping them. I rewatched Nightmares and it's even more inept than I remember it being. The movie can't decide whether it wants the killer to be known the whole time or whether it should be a mystery and ends with so many baffling moments. All the killings are done in a point-of-view fashion which suggests mystery but then the killer Helen (Jenny Neumann) is known from the opening scene and she even dreams all the killings so it's in no way a spoiler. I love how she kills people at the same time as she's supposed to be on stage in the play. Obviously no-one pointed out how bad this looks to the director, John D. Lamond, who never really cared for those things anyway. As long as there's tits and arse it's good enough. By the way, I quite liked his previous movie Felicity, which wasn't really constrained by having to have a logical plot.

More new movies including another great nude scene from Spanish actress Begoña Vargas. Sadly there isn't a decent rip of the movie so it's low bitrate and dark, something that seems to be happening too regularly with Netflix rips (see also yesterday's update with Collision). Having said that, I found a very decent Netflix rip of Spiderhead so I suppose it's got to do with the expected popularity of the movie. I wish that these movies got a release elsewhere but Netflix movies don't tend to find there way to Bluray/other streaming services.

Haven't capped a new movie release for a little while, mainly because there hasn't been much until the last week, so it's time for something new. Liked the new David Cronenberg body shock horror movie Crimes Of The Future but I did laugh when Don McKellar, the writer/director/star of Last Night, which I capped the other day, turned up in a fairly big role after I'd just talked about Cronenberg appearing in that movie. Canadian industry just as incestuous as the Australian industry... More 90s movies. I remember seeing the Canadian end-of-the-world movie Last Night on SBS back in the day, full of the usual Canadian actors plus an extended acting role from director David Cronenberg. Plus I found a HD release of Innocent Lies, a movie I only capped from DVD a month ago so that's fantastic. This time I've made a collage of Gabrielle Anwar from the movie plus I never noticed that you briefly see her bum as fumbles around in the final video. Another thing I noticed that I never have before was that the actress playing Gabrielle's as a young girl is Keira Knightley in what must've been her first movie.

Update for 18 June...

Australian Classics update with a couple of 80s Australian movies I chose randomly but both ended up starring Jennifer Cluff, who has some decent nudity in Death Games and probably better known as the wife of director Bill Bennett (who directed Jilted).

Jilted is a 1987 drama where Al (Richard Moir) works as a chef in a restaurant on an island resort owned by Bob (Steve Jacobs) and resents every minute of it because he thinks he's the best chef in the country. He wastes the time by playing around with waitress Cindy (Helen Mutkins) who came to the island on holiday 8 months earlier only to be dumped and she never left. Then Harry (Jennifer Cluff) arrives and Al is immediately intrigued by her but she just wants to be left alone as she just left her husband. After a while, she succumbs to Al and they begin sleeping with one another. Also at the restaurant is Paula (Tina Bursill), who runs the place and like the others she is stuck there but is hoping the play she is writing is her ticket out. Paula bonds with Cindy over their hatred of men despite earlier tension. Harry and Al seem to be going fine so much so that Al tells her he gave up a job at a prestigious restaurant to stay with her. Then Harry's ex Doug (Ken Radley) arrives and things become complicated. Thirty-something adult drama that's pretty uninteresting. All the characters seem to be stuck working at the world's worst restaurant yet little is made of this, just lots of relationship stuff that's familiar. Harry seems interesting until she inevitably falls for Al and there's a bizarre obsession with her short haircut. Bill Bennett's 80s movies (like Backlash) are all fairly small and mostly forgotten because they are of such narrow focus that only completists could be interested in them and Jilted is no exception. I prefer Bennett's 90s/00s genre movies like Kiss Or Kill or his Hollywood movies Tempted or Two If By Sea.

Brothers is a 1982 drama loosely based around the Balibo 5 who were members of the Australian media who were murdered by the Timorese army in 1975. Turns out two brothers Adam (Chard Hayward) and Kevin (Ivar Kants) miraculously survived the massacre and go on with their lives. 4 years later and Adam arrives in a small town in New Zealand to go to his brother's wedding but things have changed dramatically. Kevin has settled down with Jenine (Alyson Best) while Adam continued travelling the world as a photographer and suffers from PTSD from the massacre. Jenine's family doesn't like Adam and is kicked out of the house because of his views about certain things and when he takes an interest in Maori girl Lani (Margaret Laurence) who he sees singing with her brother and becomes intrigued by her. Turns out she's the town 'slut' but that doesn't bother Adam who wants to be with her. He takes her to the big city to be his escort to his exhibition but they go down a dark alley and are confronted by a gang of men who beat up Adam although he holds his own. Lani escapes and they lose each other. Adam seeks comfort in old friend Alison (Jennifer Cluff) and Lani finds him with her and runs off, finds herself with another man and attempts to kill herself. Adam moves on with Alison. Then he arrives back in Kevin's home town and the whole town hates him because of what he did to Lani. Can Adam redeem himself? Can something incredibly outlandish happen to end the movie in the most ridiculous way possible. Oh, you better believe it. Directed by notorious sleaze merchant Terry Bourke (Lady, Stay Dead, Inn of the Damned, Night of Fear) and based off an unpublished novel by actor Roger Ward, Brothers is an attempt at a meatier drama about PTSD but Terry Bourke isn't the director for such a treatment and the movie lacks lustre. Some of the choices made in the movie are baffling. Chard Hayward isn't too bad as Adam but being more of a soapy actor, he lacks the polish to bring a supposedly complicated character in Adam to life. The whole Lani sub-plot is handled badly and Bourke can't help himself with a sleazy attempted suicide scene plus why did Adam, not less than an hour after getting separated from Lani call up an old girlfriend to fuck? Bizarre. But nothing tops the ridiculous, over-the-top end where Adam goes to catch up to Alison who has left town on a bus, only for that bus to get into a bizarre accident with a logging truck when a tree truck goes completely through the bus, then the bus explodes killing Alison and setting alight a nun who's clearly stuntman Grant Page. I'm also baffled by the casting of sex bomb Alyson Best as a tightly wound housewife or why a whole bunch of Australian actors are in a movie mostly shot in a small New Zealand town. So many questions...

Both movies were capped off VHS rips so the quality is not great but perfectly watchable. Jilted has a line a little too high up from the bottom throughout which is annoying but doesn't make it unwatchable. Brothers is not bad, pretty typical of VHS rips. Neither movie will probably get an upgrade any time soon. As I said above, Bill Bennett's 80s movies were low budget niche movies barely seen by anyone and lucky to be released in some cases. Brothers gets a mention in Not Quite Hollywood for the spectacular crash at the end of the movie but if it hasn't been released by Umbrella with Bourke's other movies then it probably won't be ever upgraded.

Still with the 90s update and even more French movies, well Gadjo Dilo is mostly a Romanian movie but it does star French actor Romain Duris. The quality of the HD rip isn't the best, particularly in fast moving and heavily detailed scenes but it's mostly fine. Update for 13 June...

90s update with the entirely hateful Roman Polanski erotic drama Bitter Moon. Hadn't seen this movie in a while but I have this odd Mandela Effect with one scene in the movie. I swear I remember a scene in the movie where Emmanuelle Seigner sits on a television and pisses down it. It's such a strange memory that I clearly dreamt something but back in the day I found a thread on the old IMDB boards where other people remembered the scene being in the movie. Well, it isn't (unless it in some alternate cut) BUT there is a scene in the movie where Peter Coyote's character describes this exact scenario to Hugh Grant's character in such a vivid way that this may be where the confusion comes from. Even that is strange and I thought I was hearing things when the story was told. I don't usually have these mistaken memories, anyway I think I've cleared it up unless someone has a video of that scene... This movie could be the hateful movie ever made, just two awful characters who make their lives miserable and somehow enjoy doing it. The ending to this movie is just perfect. Total low-rent debauchery on New Year's Eve. Peter Coyote cheering on the ship hitting a big wave hoping for the next Titanic. Horny Hugh Grant getting cuckolded by his wife and the Coyote ending it all in the most matter-of-fact way possible. I love this movie way more than I should, just revolting in every way.

I'm not sure it's open matte although it pretty close to. Also Alice Eve's Australian accent is not bad, I've heard better but it's passable. Update for 4 June...

Australian Classics with a couple of 1985 movies starring Greta Scacchi that I've finally gotten around to capping.

The Coca-Cola Kid is a comedy where an intense corporate hot shot from Coca-Cola in America, Becker (Eric Roberts) comes to Australia with a mission: To get Coca-Cola sold in the only part of Australia where it isn't being sold. That place is Anderson Valley, a small isolated township that is owned by eccentric millionaire T. George McDowell (Bill Kerr), who makes his own variant on Coca-Cola, McCoke. He has an unexpected insight into the place from his assigned secretary Terri (Greta Scacchi), who takes a liking to Becker and seems to know a lot more about Anderson Valley and T. George McDowell than she is letting on. Becker manages to ingratiate himself to the eccentric millionaire by saying that he'll help spread McCoke around the world but really he's trying to complete his mission. Becker slowly falls for Terri but she lives a complicated life with a young daughter (Rebecca Smart) and a persistent ex (Chris Haywood). But when Becker brings Coca-Cola to Anderson Valley, all hell breaks loose. Strange, wacky tale full of that certain type of Australian humour that doesn't travel well even though the movie is directed oddly enough by a very European director. Eric Roberts is an odd casting here but he kinda works as a very American fish-out-of-water and Scacchi is also fine with her ditzy character who gets to do a fair bit of physical comedy. Turns out Scacchi hated Roberts according to an interview on the DVD so it's interesting that this doesn't really come across in the movie. An early role for child star Rebecca Smart too and she's fairly precocious here mixing it up with Roberts. The film's plot is never not odd. I just don't understand why Coca-Cola would give a shit about it's product not being sold in a small area covering less than 1% of the nation. Why does Terri keep trying to get Becker to like her even after he unceremoniously fires her? And because it's an odd, wacky Australian movie, you can guarantee David Argue turns up as he does here as a newspaper salesman but he barely offers a joke. Just a strange mess of a movie, some good but quite a bit that doesn't work.

Burke & Wills is a drama about the most famous exploration in Australia, made in 1860-1861 by Robert O'Hara Burke (Jack Thompson) and William John Wills (British actor Nigel Havers). Before leaving, Burke courts and then marries opera singer Julia Matthews (Greta Scacchi) but signs are ominous before they leave Melbourne as neither man seems prepared for the trip and Wills' father warns Burke that his son might not be up to it before he leaves. Things go alright to begin with although Burke gets into constant fights with camel herder Landers (Barry Hill) to the point that Burke sacks him from the trip. They come across Indigenous people along the way but all encounters between them are awkward although not hostile. Despite being considered lost by the media, Burke and Wills get to their destination in the top of Australia, the Gulf of Carpentaria (later found that they were actually 20 miles short of the top most point of Australia) before coming back and relying on half rations which soon leads to disaster. A search crew led by Brahe (Drew Forsythe) is sent to find them and all they find is one near death member of the exploration, John King (Matthew Fargher), who is being looked after by a local Indigenous tribe. I remember there being a big thing about Burke & Wills in the mid-to-late 80s but I never realised how much of a disaster their exploration was until much later. They seem to be celebrated despite failing badly (not the only Australian explorers that this happened too) but this movie seems to be fairly accurate if mostly uninteresting telling of the exploration. I suppose it's hard to make walking for 18 months interesting so there are interludes where Burke remembers his time with Julia and Wills keeps having the same nightmare about not getting out of a maze in time. The end speech from a barely recovered John King at the end of the movie is probably the best part of the movie and gives a rather dark account of what actually happened although he still gives praise to Burke & Wills who nearly got him killed. If anything I think more should've been made how the Indigenous tribes tried to help the explorers near the end but all bar King either refused or didn't take heed of any help or advice given but even then I don't think it would've made this movie worth watching. It's just hard to tell this type of tale in an interesting way.

I capped The Coca-Cola Kid from the new Bluray and honestly it's not high quality but that is more that there doesn't seem to be a high quality print of the movie around. The Umbrella DVD isn't great either but actually seems more presentable plus is has some good DVD extras if you're into that. Burke & Wills is from the bare bones Umbrella DVD, not great but better than nothing. Scacchi mentions on the The Coca-Cola Kid extras that she seemed to only be up for roles that required nudity during this period and funnily enough she even briefly shows her breasts in the PG rated Burke & Wills.
