Update for 22 January...

More Australian movies from the mid-80s. Some quick synopses:

Unfinished Business is a 1985 drama where Geoff (John Clayton) bumps into Maureen (Michele Fawdon) in the street, a woman he had a brief relationship with 15 years previously. They start talking and then one thing leads to another and they sleep with one another. The next day, Maureen, who is married, calls Geoff with a proposal. With her husband (Norman Kaye) going away on a work trip, she asks Geoff if he would like to get her pregnant. He feels like he's getting used but he agrees and they set up a trip to a remote cabin when they have a week where Maureen can get pregnant without her husband knowing and with no strings attached. Well, of course strings are attached... From the maker of the insufferable Warm Nights on a Slow Moving Train, Bob Ellis managed to make yet another boring adult drama where two people talk about their relationship and what they are doing the entire time. Thankfully it's only 75 minutes long but that's still too long.

Going Sane is a 1985 comedy about Martin (John Waters) who's hit a brick wall in his life and is going through a mid-life crisis. He doesn't love his wife Ainslee (Judy Morris) and he hates his job as a mining executive. His secretary Irene (Linda Cropper) has a crush on him which he decides to indulge by taking her out to dinner then bringing her home to his wife where he asks her to have a threesome. When Ainslee says no, he locks her out and has sex with Irene. Then he locks himself in his boss's office and can't be talked out for a day until Irene finds a way and they end up running away to the country together. But things don't go as planned and it only makes him more depressed. When he's found barely alive in an abandoned warehouse after starving himself, he is sent to a mental hospital where he meets Nosh (Kate Raison). They come to like one another and she helps him escape to a commune that ends up being the focus of his old company. Wacky comedy that's not really funny and the plot isn't all that enticing. Also has a very obvious plot where he finds himself getting away from the city and falling for a much younger woman. Also has no real insight into depression and there's no real surprise that it's pretty much forgotten.

As with all VHS rips, the quality varies. Unfinished Business is fairly decent quality and it's lit and shot quite well even though there's very few locations, which is not a surprise considering the cinematographer went on to shoot the Lord of the Rings movies. Going Sane is very dim which shows up in a couple of the darker scenes I capped below. Maybe it'll find a DVD release by accident but that's going to be the only way it'll get a better release.

Update for 21 January...

A couple of Australian movies starring Tina Bursill for the weekend update, I think both might be made-for-TV. Some quick synopses:

A Single Life is a 1986 drama where 30-something Billie decides she wants a baby but her current boyfriend and flings aren't cutting it and she may not be fertile. Then she gets a job at a construction site as a secretary and she then begins an affair with her boss Richard (Steve Jacobs) which seems to be going well then Billie gets pregnant and then she avoids Richard like the plague. He tries to see her but she 'disappears' thanks to her friend Lee (Jane Clifton). Well that's a problem as Richard left his wife Margaret (Pamela Rabe) for Billie and then he sells his business and starts again as a boatbuilder. One day he spots Billie and he still wants to be with her. Then he finds out he's a father but she won't let him see the baby. Oh boy... Utterly silly drama very much of the time that seems to want to make Billie out to be a feminist hero but her choice is appalling and incredibly selfish. Richard's reaction is reasonable until he finds out he has a kid and then the movie completely loses it. And then it tries a happy ending! Fuck off...

A Good Thing Going is a 1978 domestic drama where Phil (John Hargreaves) stays out with his mates including his best mate Terry (Chris Haywood) every night and has a fling with Jeanette (Tina Bursill). There's just one thing. He's married to Jane (Veronica Lang) and they have two kids. And Jane has finally had enough of his bullshit. One day, she up and leaves without telling him or the kids. Phil then has to look after the kids but he's completely hopeless and his kids take it hard, particularly his son who gets into plenty of trouble. Can Phil get his shit together and get back with Jane? Another very much of the time drama, this one is pretty obvious where it's going although it is a bit of shock having the mother just disappear completely and have little interest in coming back. Phil is an awful person and deserves a wake-up call but Jane probably would've made a better choice if she dumped Phil and took the kids. Interesting that the kids are played by fairly famous acting siblings Miles and Simone Buchanan.

As always with VHS rips they vary in quality and both are not too bad, A Good Thing Going has some interlacing issues but it is not overwhelming. As both are TV movies it's highly doubtful they'll ever get an upgrade to DVD or better quality.

Tina Bursill has been a consistent presence in Australian movies and TV for 50 years and is still going strong. It's a testament to how small the local industry was in the 80s that Tina and Steve Jacobs would play a couple in the next year's Jilted which I capped recently. Looks like A Single Life was Pamela Rabe's first movie.

Some new horror movies. Did some upgrading of my system and it's run into some issues which plagued this update. Everything is mostly fine but this update should've been out yesterday, so it's taken far too long. There might be some barely heard audio issues in some videos but nothing to render the videos unwatchable. Still trying to work out why it is happening, hopefully it's because the audio had issues which I think is definitely the case with the Candy Land rip.

Candy Land is a pretty fucked up horror movie that I liked quite a lot. It even bizarrely ends with Crowded House's 'Don't Dream it's Over', an Australian/New Zealand classic...

Update for 10 January...

Going through some DVDs of 90s movies.

I had to get another copy of Oh, What a Night as the copy of the Australian DVD I had was scratched and it affected the one of Barbara Williams' nude scenes. Interestingly, both versions are letterboxed differently and some musical cues are different. Nothing dramatically different enough to cap both versions as they show the same thing but some shots are zoomed in while others are the same. Also the Australian DVD is more washed out so this version is better. Very odd, particularly the different musical cues.

Update for 8 January...

Another New Zealand movie for the weekend. Thought about leaving it to next weekend but it's a very quick update so why wait.

The Insatiable Moon is a 2010 drama where a group of men who live on the fringe of society roam the streets of Ponsonby including the rather charming Arthur (Rawiri Paratene) who claims to be the second son of God. Meanwhile Margaret (Sara Wiseman) is working in social services and comes across Arthur and is immediately taken by him. Arthur is looking for a man who has gone missing from the boarding house where they live and eventually finds him hanging from a tree after his 'urges' become too much for him to handle. Turns out the man who killed himself was a paedophile and this is used by certain locals as a crutch to shut down the boarding house. The closure of the house brings Arthur and Margaret closer to the point where they fall for one another but this causes issues for Arthur who starts to become more manic and then goes off his meds. Can the boarding house be saved and Arthur and Margaret get together? Not a bad movie and it helps that Arthur is a great mix of charming positivity and nervous energy that attracts people to him. The plot is pretty straightforward and formulaic but it's fairly watchable although there's a few times where the movie stops dead for incredibly long scenes where not a lot happens play out.

Update for 7 January...

Haven't capped a New Zealand movie on the weekend update for a while so I've been sitting on 99 New Zealand movies that I've capped for a while. Maybe I was waiting for a big one to cap but I didn't really have anything that big to look at or I've already capped them. So, here's a couple of early 2000s movies starring Kate Elliott. Some quick synopses:

Toy Love is a 2002 romantic comedy Ben (Dean O'Gorman) sees Chlo (Kate Elliott) at a bar and tries to pick her up but fails miserably so he asks her to start again only for another man Jim (Peter Feeney) to cut in. Ben has a go at him and they tussle and they both get kicked out. As Ben leaves, he comes across Jim and his buddies who see him and they chase after him. As he runs, he sees Chlo in a taxi who helps him escape. They go to his house where he lives with his girlfriend Emily (Marissa Stott) and he introduces Chlo as his casting agent for an ad he's about to shoot. They fool around in the bathroom then Chlo leaves possibly never to be seen again. Meanwhile, Emily is in love with mechanic Francois (Michael Lawrence) and she's cheating on Ben with him. The next day, Ben picks up Nancy (Genevieve McClean) and they go to her house but she loses interest. Ben hears someone nearby spying on them and goes to check who it is and it's Chlo. This begins a chaotic, wacky journey where we'll see if Ben and Chlo get together that goes to many ridiculous places with no real clear path as to where it's going almost like it was made up as they filming it. Chlo is so unpredictable that she's hard to pin down, she's like the ultimate manic pixie dream girl. Ben flits between Chlo and Emily although this is probably the only predictable thing in the movie as you know where Ben's going to end up. It's a hectic movie that bounces from one wacky moment to another so you'll either find it a lot of fun or completely silly. I found it pretty watchable mainly for the unpredictability factor.

Fracture is a 2004 drama where Brent (Jared Turner) robs some houses but is interrupted by a homeowner Ulla (Jennifer Ward-Lealand) who he kicks down the stairs as he escapes, knocking her out. Meanwhile, his sister Leeanne (Kate Elliott) has a new son in which the father was a one night stand which her religious mother (Miranda Harcourt) isn't happy about. Brent drops off Leeanne at her sharehouse and gives her some of the proceeds of his robberies. She lives with Jody (Jay Saussey) and her abusive boyfriend Danny (Paul Glover), who has an eye on her. It turns out that Ulla is fighting for her life so her family get in touch with her father Howard (John Noble), a hot shot lawyer with political ambitions who is neck-deep in the trial of his brother Gordon (Alistair Browning), who has been absent from their lives since the divorce from her Ulla's mother Gwen (Liddy Holloway). At first, Brent is cocky about what happened but when his fence Mrs. Ponder (Brenda Kendall) works out that he's behind what happened, she threatens him and attempts to get him to go to Sydney. This starts Brent's descent into a personal hell which would lead to him becoming a shadow of his self. Brent's crime affects two families which will either bring them closer together or tear them apart. As this movie is based on the novel written by the author behind possibly my favourite New Zealand movie In My Father's Den, I was hoping this would be pretty good too but the movie has one large problem it struggles to overcome. The character of Brent may be the stupidest character I've ever seen. He does things that are incredibly nuts and it gets more ridiculous with everything he does. It's hard to believe that anyone could do the things he ends up doing. It also suffers from the usual ensemble drama nonsense where everyone ends up being connected despite not really knowing it. There are some good things mostly involving the victim's family but I just got more frustrated by Brent that I didn't even care by the end.

The quality of the videos below are OK I guess. Both movies have been near impossible to find as they both seem to have not been released outside of New Zealand and have long been out-of-print. Toy Love is from a DVD rip so it's not bad but I wish it was bigger. Fracture recently turned up for free on NZ OnScreen, so that's where I got it from. It's pretty much DVD quality but is a bit splotchy at times but nothing overly noticeable. I also watched another movie starring Kate Elliott from the same period, the American co-production No One Can Hear You co-starring Kelly McGillis and Emily Barclay but there was nothing to cap in that movie.

Update for 3 January...

It's 90s update time and I've finally gotten a hold of a HD copy of Hong Kong action classic Naked Killer. Hadn't seen it in a while and it comes from that early 90s period where the world discovered female 'hitmen' thanks to La Femme Nikita. At least Naked Killer has some originality in it's plot unlike that other Hong Kong female killer thiller Black Cat which is a flagrant rip-off of Nikita. The movie plays heavily on the sex and violence factor and mixes both quite regularly including in a really out there scene where the rival killer gets extremely horny at Kitty (Chingmy Yau) when she is spied having sex and takes it out on her underling. There's also a strange obsession with milk which is brought up very regularly. Then there's the neverending stream of drooling rapists that Kitty's mentor seems to have available for 'practising' on. Naked Killer ends up being a strange mix of action thriller, erotic thriller and comedy that doesn't completely gel but is still a pretty enjoyable watch. Plus it has an utterly bizarre ending where the 'good guys' including a cop kill themselves something you'd never really see in a movie. Such a shame Chingmy Yau never really gets naked and does one hell of a tease.

Well as I said, Kitty and the cop die in the end so it's not strange in the slightest that they both turn up as different characters in the 1993 completely different sequel, which goes by the name Raped By An Angel. And if you're a regular of the site, you'll know that I capped a bunch of the sequels to Raped By An Angel a couple of years ago, all completely unrelated to Naked Killer but somehow in the same series. And all as revolting as the titles suggest...

Starting the new year with a couple of Australian movies that I screencaptured off Ozflix back in 2016 and have finally gotten around to having a look at. Just had a look at Ozflix, which last time I saw hadn't had a new movie in 2 years and it's currently down. Hmmm... Might've been a movie of two on there I didn't get around to looking at that were available nowhere else. Ah well. Some quick synopses:

Gene-X is a 2005 medical thriller where Dr Tom Grey (Patrick Magee) is working on a cancer cure at a hospital when he catches the eye of nurse Casey (Ayse Tezel) who is kinda appalled by him using rabbits as his 'guinea pigs'. Tom is close but one of his fellow doctor's mistakes his cancer cure for meth and he and his girlfriend take it. Also Tom's boss, who's having an affair with Casey, has gotten a hold of the mistaken meth. Casey is also looking after a young boy who is dying from cancer and she coaxes Tom to try it on him. Well, it turns out it makes people extremely violent but it also cures the young boy and now a bunch of people who've taken the 'cure' have turned extremely violent and various people are dying. Has a fairly obvious idea and runs with it although there's little consistency as to how the drug works particularly how it cured the boy but he magically doesn't become violent. Not a bad movie but it's limitations are obvious and definitely affect it.

Dust Off The Wings is a 1997 drama that focuses on the day before and the day of the wedding of Lee (Lee Rogers). As he watches his best friend Ward (Ward Stevens) pick up women, Lee tries to reconcile that he can't do that any more and is about to get married. Meanwhile, Ward talks to Phil (Phil Ceberano) who admits to sleeping with the bride-to-be one drunken evening and Ward doesn't know what to do with the information. He tells the bride's friend Jenna (Kate Ceberano) who doesn't know what to do either so they let things go ahead as normal. At the buck's night, Lee gets a 'wedding present' from Roxanne (Tziporah Malkah aka Kate Fischer). On the morning of the wedding, Ward tells Lee that his wife-to-be cheated on him with Phil. He tries to get his head around it and whether or not to go ahead with the wedding. Sigh, what an awful, annoying movie full of annoying people who do shitty things. The central premise of the movie is so stupid that I just kept getting more pissed off the longer it is mulled over. So a guy who got a blow job from a woman at his buck's party is worried that he has to stop the wedding because his wife-to-be cheated and it only matters because it was with a friend while he got a blow job from some known slut? Fuck off, I don't care, you're both fucking stupid, I hope you have a great marriage.

The quality of both screen captures are OK I guess, I'm not completely happy with them but neither movie is available anywhere else so it'll do. Gene-X isn't too bad but it has a bit of that jittering thing that I can't work out how to stop. Dust Off The Wings isn't helped by it being shot on home video cameras but it's not too bad considering. It's never been released on DVD and I'm surprised it turned up on Ozflix. It was my first try at screencapping so I'm just glad it turned out OK.

New Zealand actress Ayse Tesel made a couple of indie Australian movies in the mid-2000s, this and Court of Lonely Royals. She's worked mostly sporadically since but is still acting recently turning up on Shortland Street. Ayse had a fairly decent nude scene in Spartacus: War Of The Damned. Quite a number of known actors turn up in Dust Off The Wings but the main roles are mostly just the filmmakers and their friends. Annalise Braakensiek and Alana Ross-Stevens have nude scenes, Annalise, who was a fairly well-known modell at the time, is only in the movie for the brief nude scene. Alana plays the bride-to-be.
