Update for 28 May...

Saw Berlin Syndrome in cinemas a couple of weeks back and it's been released on VOD in America this weekend, so it's time to cap it. I don't know why day and date VOD/cinema release isn't done more in Australia, possibly not financially viable to do both. There was a couple of Australian movies that did it in 2014 but nothing since and none from overseas. So now you have to wait at least 3-4 months later before it gets legitimate home release if you miss it's 'blink and you'll miss' cinema release. I think it has something to do with government money and that movie's must be released in cinemas as part of the deal, but that's a ridiculously antiquated system and I'm sure that 11 people total that saw Berlin Syndrome in Australian cinemas was well worth the investment. Ah, whatever, it's never going to change...

Redux for 27 May...

HD redux time, today the sex comedy Good Luck Chuck which has plenty of sex, just none from Jessica Alba. Also delved deep into the Bluray and there's plenty of stuff to cap in the extras. Shame that those days where extra scenes seem to be ending as there's occasional nuggets of gold in between boring features and backslapping talking heads. Usually something extra on a sex comedy Bluray like this movie and I remember Forgetting Sarah Marshall having a some great extras (that I really should recap sometime soon) and here's always extra nudity from Lena Dunham on the Girls series Blurays (yeah I hear the groan, move on). My favourite extra scene is the minute longer extended sex scene of an already long scene featuring Autumn Reeser in The Big Bang. Looks like in the streaming age all you'll get is the movie. I've seen some movies with extras but rarely ever deleted scenes always some boring interviews. What are we going to miss out on...

Update for 25 May...

A few more telemovies today, a couple of newish ones and one from the 90s. Dangerous Lessons is a stalker thriller with double the stalkers, one a student the teacher had a brief flirtation with and the other another teacher who end up fighting each other for her stalker affections. Yeah, it's pretty bad. Outlaw Prophet is the true life tale of a polygamist religious leader who authorities are looking to arrest as tales of his brutal hold over the women in his cult, particularly the underage girl who he forces to have sex with them. This movie has frustrating amounts of covered up nudity as it attempts to tell a sexual story in the most sterile way possible. Stolen Youth, which I get mixed up the other Brian Austin Green telemovie about him bringing up a baby as a high school kid, Unwed Father, is where he has an affair with his mother's best friend and everyone seems to have no problem with it except his mother who's seething over it. Not bad, I s'pose.

The problem with all those old telemovies from the 90s is that they are all upscaled into HD with varying degrees of quality. The copy of Stolen Youth I recorded is fairly good, but the open credits is all interlaced which is where I capped the Katie Wright bra scene, so that video is a bit dodgy at HD size, but looks good if you reduce the size a bit. The Sharon Lawrence videos are fairly good. I've comes across some great upscale including one in an upcoming update and also come across some appalling uncappable ones which I've junked because I can't fix them. Shame really, as the one I'm thinking of had a really good side-boob scene. Maybe I'll give it a go at the smaller size next time it airs.

Update for 24 May...

Being building up a few telemovies so it's time to actually cap some of them. Nothing spectacular below as their telemovies, but there is good stuff. The movies themselves are typically bad and cliché-ridden although The Assault isn't too bad as far as these go, a little overdramatic which is not unexpected, but it's OK. Confessions is typically annoying and Presumed Dead has a terrible title which is only slightly worse than the hokey plot and even dumber ending. Also these movies usually cast mother as fairly well-known actresses from 10-15 years ago (see another telemovie I capped recently: Lethal Seduction), so I'm definitely getting on when Kate Ashfield is the mother of a teenage daughter in a crappy telemovie and Ashley Dulaney is pretty cute playing a psycho.

Update for 22 May...

Running out of new stuff so something quick today.

Schneider vs. Bax is the latest absurd comedy from Dutch filmmaker Alex van Warmerdam where Schneider (Tom Dewispelaere) is called away for an urgent job on his birthday by his boss Mertens (Gene Bervoets). Turns out Schneider is a hitman and hasn't told his wife (or kids) that what he actually does. His job is to kill obnoxious writer and apparent child killer (according to Mertens...) Ramon Bax (Alex van Warmerdam), who has just callously dumped his girlfriend Nadine (Eva van de Wijdeven) because his 'weird' daughter Francisca (Maria Kraakman) is making her yearly visit and he doesn't want them to meet. Easy job for Schneider; go to Bax's remote house, wait for him to exit the house and shoot him from a distance then go home and celebrate his birthday. Wrong. A local ranger (Pierre Bokma) thwarts his first attempt and then a prostitute, Gina (Annet Malherbe) decides to hide from her violent customer in Schneider's secret hide-out, so he has to kill the customer to save Gina and then she becomes a thorn in his side as he attempts to kill Bax. Things then get crowded at Bax's house when his actually perverted father and his latest much younger lover arrive and then Nadine comes back with her friend to get her stuff. Also, it turns out Bax isn't who he seems and is now waiting for the crafty but increasingly frustrated Schneider. Pretty good black comedy, but I don't think it's as good as van Warmerdam's previous movies De Laatste Dagen van Emma Blank, Ober or the excellent Borgman. It does have it's moments though, the leads are pretty good as well as his regulars and Maria Kraakman's character is pretty good particularly after one incident in the movie also the final act shoot out is pretty thrilling. Worth a look if you're into the absurd, but it's hard to recommend a van Warmerdam's film as absurd comedy is not for everyone.

Update for 19 May...

One more Spanish movie, well technically it's also French and Belgian, but the writer/director is Spanish (being involved with movies like Abre Los Ojos, Nadie Conoce a Nadie, The Sea Inside and Agora). The movie is in English... I'm now confused... Anyway, it's about a young man (Tom Hughes), who is dying and decides to put himself into a program where they resurrect people from the dead a fair way into the future. Turns out he's the first person to successfully survive the resurrection, but when he is introduced to his old memories, particularly of his former lover (Oona Chaplin), he begins to go through a series of wild emotions including reassessing whether it was a good idea to be resurrected. This is further complicated when he is told that his lover decided to be resurrected too. Not a bad movie with an interesting idea that doesn't take the easy route that a Hollywood movie absolutely would've taken, but having said that, I still thought Proyecto Lázaro was a little underwhelming. There's a stand-offish feel to the story where it feels more like it's observing from afar rather than getting to the heart of the story and this is not helped by a boring lead actor who delivers a character I never really felt any affinity for. Not everyone can be all-stars but at least give us something to connect to. Ah well...

A couple more Spanish movies today with María (y los demás) about a woman (Bárbara Lennie) trying to cope with her father marrying his nurse and El Elegido (The Chosen), a film mostly in English about the man who was entrusted by Stalinists (including his mother) to find a way into the inner circle of the exiled Leon Trotsky and once inside, he is given the go ahead to assassinate Trotsky. Hannah Murray plays the girl he uses to get his way in.

Update for 15 May...

A couple of new VOD movies in today's update.

Some quick synopses: Bottom Of The World is a mind-bending drama where a man (Douglas Smith) attempts to work out what is going on when his increasingly sick girlfriend (Jena Malone) disappears. Turns out he's living a double or triple life and that his girlfriend isn't who he thinks she is and everything that's coming has been predestined. Or something... Couldn't work out what was going on and why it was going on, movie seemed like a complete mess. Vincent N Roxxy is a surprisingly violent thriller/love story where Vincent (Emile Hirsch) saves Roxxy (Zoë Kravitz) from being attacked and tells her that she can hide out on his family's farm with his brother and his brother's girlfriend. She settles in and they fall for each other but a lingering threat remains. Pretty stock-standard love story come revenge thriller that gets extremely violent very quickly. Was very surprised by this, wasn't expecting it to be that violent and it may be the best reason to watch the movie as it's pretty mundane before the violence.

Update for 14 May...

Always Shine is a drama/thriller where two actress friends at different points in their careers, Anna (Mackenzie Davis) and Beth (Caitlin FitzGerald), go on a weekend trip to hopefully improve their crumbling friendship. But it's a friendship that has gone through years of jealousy as Beth is now on the verge of stardom thanks to a series of successful horror movies where she always gets naked while Anna, who is clearly more invested in acting, is struggling and it's coming out in equal bouts of crying and bullying. The friendship comes to a head when Anna and Beth run into a friend who is making a short film he told Beth to tell Anna we was considering her for a role but Beth did not tell her about it. Anna goes into a rage and takes it out on Beth, then... Interesting movie that I don't completely understand particularly after the twist and is also full of insider knowledge which is not surprising considering it written and directed by actors Lawrence Michael Levine and Sophia Takal. I don't think it fully communicates what it wants to say, but Always Shine is an intriguing mood piece about professional jealousies nonetheless.

Update for 12 May...

Today a new Australian movie that hasn't even had a local release yet. Typical...

Hounds Of Love is a based on a true story thriller set in 1980s Perth about a married couple John and Evelyn White (Stephen Curry and Emma Booth) who cruise the streets looking for teenage girls to entice into their car and then they kidnap them, lock them up and perform all sorts of physical and sexual torture on their victims before killing them. Their latest victim is Vicki (Ashleigh Cummings), a school girl who sneaks out of her house to visit her boyfriend and is enticed by the couple with the promise of good dope. But Vicki is a fighter and she will try anything to get out of her predicament. She makes an escape attempt that is unsuccessful and she also notices that Evelyn is insanely jealous of any attention that John gives Vicki and she desperately tries anything to avoid John's advances, not always successfully. Her mother (Susie Porter), who with husband who she recently separated from, attempt to track her down after they receive a letter Vicki was forced to write to get her family to not look for her and despite very little help from the police. Can Vicki escape before John and Evelyn before they can add another scalp to their ever growing list. As I said earlier, Hounds Of Love is based on a shocking true story that I don't know a lot about, but from what I know about it, the details including how it ended seem are fairly similar. The movie is tough going at times although it never gets extremely graphic with the violence/sexual assault, but that makes the movie no less intense. Both Curry and Booth are playing way against type, particularly Curry who is well known for his knockabout sidekick roles and is very convincingly nasty here. Cummings continues to impress although by playing a victim for most of the movie, she doesn't have a lot of work with but makes the most of it. Worth a look if you are into true crime tales, but definitely not an easy watch.

Finally gotten around to seeing the German set Australian movie Berlin Syndrome in cinemas on Tuesday (finally remembered to write about it...) despite it being out since April 27. Starring Teresa Palmer as an Australian backpacker in Berlin who meets a local English teacher (played by Max Riemelt) and falls for him and despite her plans to keep travelling, decides to stay to be with him. After a night of pleasure at his out-of-the-way place, he goes to work and leaves her at his apartment. When she goes to leave, she finds that she is locked in and that he's taken her sim card, so she waits for him to come home, laugh about the misunderstanding and spend another night together with the promise that he has left the key for her to leave. Except the key doesn't work and she's locked in again and the windows are suspiciously reinforced. When he finally comes home, she wants to leave, but he won't let her and ties her up. Now, she is his captive and he forces a domesticated relationship with her while he goes about his daily routine. She tries to escape, but doesn't get far and slowly over time he grinds her down but there's always the notion that he may harm her, more so when she finds out she's not the first. Ha, I just realised the similarities to Hounds Of Love except it's a little less threatening and the captor and captive have a very different type of relationship. A pretty decent movie that seems to go on and on at almost 2 hours and does end in a most unlikely fashion, but not a bad movie.

It's directed by Cate Shortland (Somersault, The Silence, another German set movie Lore) who usually makes movies with sexual overtones and Berlin Syndrome has a bit throughout. This is definitely Teresa's best nudity since Restraint (and that's hard to top for quality, but it's not far away here). When the couple first get together, we see Teresa's breasts from a couple of angles as she is getting eaten out. The scene is lengthy (possibly over a minute) and her breasts are on constant display throughout the scene as she lies on the bed. Next, she's in the shower with the man and we see one of her breasts briefly. We then she her bottom for about ten seconds as she lays on her stomach on the bed. Later, we briefly see one of her breasts as the bloke forces Teresa to shower. There's also another dark scene where she's playing with a Polaroid camera (which is constantly used throughout) and she might be naked, but the shots where too quick and too dark to tell anything significant. There's also numerous Polaroids on display throughout with naked shots possibly of Teresa although a photo double is listed in the credits so I doubt it's her. There's also a fairly sexy scene when the bloke gives her a bodysuit-type lingerie to wear and she plays for him. I think that's it although I might have forgotten a brief scene or two, I am trying to remember it from a few days ago.

Bad Girl also played in cinemas the previous two weeks and I missed it, but there's already being a review that's said that Sara West is naked and Samara Weaving is almost naked (there was an original trailer for the movie that starred Hanna Mangan Lawrence, shame she's not in the movie). Emo: The Musical is also out, but I doubt it would have anything and Don't Tell (also starring Sara West) is released this Thursday, an all-star Australian cast for a movie about child abuse I gathered from the trailer I saw before Berlin Syndrome, so probably nothing to cap except the classification does say it has a sex scene and usually if it's abuse-related, it gets a sexual violence rating (which they're very harsh on in this country).

Update for 11 May...

Three new movies today. Some quick synopses:

Land of Smiles is a terrible horror movie about a woman (Alexandra Turshen) who follows her friend to Thailand to join her on holiday, but she finds out that her friend has been kidnapped and to get her friend back, she need to party hard and enjoy herself. Everyone tells her that this is just some silly shit to add to the experience of the trip and her friend will join up with her later, but it becomes clear that this might be more. Garbage movie, terrible premise with little to no tension and for a movie made in Thailand, the only Thai people in the movie are glorified extras.

The Holly Kane Experiment is a British thriller about an experimental psychologist Holly Kane (Kirsty Averton) who specialises in the subconscious who is given a major grant by a well-known psychologist (Nicky Henson) to further her studies. Holly begins to experiment with a new drug and her experiences in the immersion tank, but her benefactor begins to interfere with her experiment in a way that Holly will become sexually submissive to him. A former boyfriend tries to help her, but the benefactor has far-reaching influences. Not bad, a bit silly, but interesting enough.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a horror thriller about a mysterious dead body (Olwen Catherine Kelly) that is delivered to a morgue for a quick autopsy, but strange things begin to happen and the autopsy become increasingly unreal. And the body is still alive in its own way and it's not happy. Pretty good thriller.

Update for 9 May...

Voice From The Stone is a drama about Verena (Emilia Clarke), a young nurse in Italy who takes up a job helping a mute young boy, who hasn't spoken since his mother died. Verena is the latest of a long list of nurses who the boy's artist father Klaus (Marton Csokas), has brought to the castle to help and he doesn't expect her to last either. Verena observes the boy, who is obsessed with a voice in the wall that is saying something to him, but when she listens to the wall, she cannot hear it. As she continues to understand the boy and the castle that they live in, Verena becomes more entranced by the place. When Klaus recognises the similarities between Verena and his wife, he becomes interested in her and inspires him to go back to his art and they both fall for each other. Verena hears the voice in the wall and things then take a turn for the worse for her. OK drama with a slight supernatural theme, but isn't entirely the point of the movie.

Update for 8 May...

Don't worry, I still cap new movies...

Personal Shopper is a drama/supernatural thriller (of sorts...) about Maureen (Kristen Stewart) who lives in Paris and finds out that her twin brother has died of a heart defect that she also has. She settles in her brother's place for the night even though it had been vacated by her brother's girlfriend Lara and while there Maureen feels a presence in the house that she believes could be her brother. She investigates about ghosts mainly via her phone as she works as a personal shopper for Kyra (Nora von Waldstätten), a job she despises but she has freedom and money to play with. At Kyra's house she meet's Kyra's lover Ingo (Lars Eidinger), who piques her interest in ghosts further. Maureen stays a second night in the house, but this time the presence interacts with her in an angry manner that scares her and she comes to the conclusion that the presence is not her brother. On a work trip to London, Maureen begins to receive text messages from an unknown person who seems to be following her. In the beginning the texts a playful, occasionally a little unnerving, but Maureen plays along, going as far a trying on the clothes she has brought for Kyra although she is not allowed to. Then, the text become more personal and demanding, so Maureen cools it with this unknown person, but this only makes things much worse when she finds Kyra dead in her apartment. Who is this unknown person? Is it her brother? And what do they really want with Maureen? Another Olivier Assayas baffler where a surprising amount of the movie is just text messages and that's not the baffling part. Not the normal supernatural thriller and the answers are not exactly certain but Assayas's movies are always interesting if not completely comprehensible and Personal Shopper is a pretty interesting movie. But, I can't say that I fully get it...
