Update for 28 May...

More Australian Classics with today's theme being movies starring American actresses. Some quick synopses:

Now and Forever is a 1982 romantic drama based off of a Danielle Steel novel where Jessie (Cheryl Ladd) arrives back home to her husband Ian (Robert Coleby) and things seems great until he is charged with rape after having a fling with another woman (Christine Amor) while she was away. Well, it's a false accusation but the court doesn't see it that way and he goes to jail and Jessie tries to stay with him as he tries to appeal the verdict but she struggles. Then she meets Geoffrey (Rod Mullinar) and things become further strained in her marriage. Will they get back together? Oh come on, you know the answer to that. Typically silly drama not helped by a drawn out court case of an incredibly stupid false accusation that a half decent lawyer (or even a terrible one) would've scuttled by dinner. It's all very tawdry and silly and then there's the scene where Ian, from jail, buys Jessie an incredibly flash and expensive car which steers her back to him. Boo! This sucks but then this movie isn't made for people like me.

Backstage is a 1988 drama where American 'rock' singer Kate Lawrence (singer Laura Branigan) is restless about going on another world tour so she tells her agent that she'd like to do some acting. He reluctantly guides her to the only play that has shown interest in her, in Melbourne Australia, and she jumps at the opportunity. Once in Australia she comes across some resistance in her appearance in the play by a local critic Robert (Michael Aitkens), which she doesn't take kindly too, humiliating him in front of the press. She goes to apologise to him and they end up falling for one another. Then it turns out that Kate has a bad case of opening night jitters and is really bad. Robert doesn't hold back in his review and this causes a rupture in their relationship. Kate gets better over time but the die is cast and Robert leaves her and he seems to disappear off the face of the Earth except someone gives her a great review in Variety and it reads rather familiar. Kate takes up another acting gig and hopes this will bring Robert back. Oh boy, this one is very silly. The old harsh critic has his heart melted by the nice actress only to expose his own failings as an artist which he can't handle so he disappears plot. The movie basically mirrors Branigan's own appearance in the movie (pop star who does acting) and even gets her to sing a few songs which are fine. But the plot is silly and very obvious and the ending when she's getting applause for performance and she's looking around for Robert and you just know he'll be there. I was seriously hoping he wouldn't turn up to give it some poignancy but no, this movie's need to be bleedingly obvious wins out. Branigan isn't too bad although they overstate her acting abilities but she's fine. The movie just isn't interesting enough and unsurprisingly didn't get much of a release back in the day and is pretty much lost to time except for VHS rips. Plus one of the producers/filmmakers is a notorious scammer so good luck with anything better coming out.

I also had a look at another Australian movie starring an American actress (Carol Kane from When a Stranger Calls) called Norman Loves Rose but there was nothing to cap. It a 1982 movie about a 13 year-old boy who has a very close relationship with his sister-in-law (Carol Kane) and the word 'creepy' comes to mind. It plays as a light comedy but boy you couldn't make this movie now. When the sister-in-law gets pregnant and we don't exactly know who by... Woof!

As always, the quality of the videos below is only as good as the sources that are available. Now and Forever is off DVD but is only of reasonable quality. It's fine I guess. Backstage is from a VHS rip which is OK quality. Get the feeling that a good DVD would make that see-through scene come out better but I doubt that'll ever happen.

Update for 27 May...

Today's Australian Classics includes a couple of 90s Australian movies starring Claudia Karvan. Some quick synopses:

Dating the Enemy is a 1996 body swap comedy where a science reporter Tash (Claudia Karvan) meets a TV host Brett (Guy Pearce) and they hit it off at first but she finds out he's massively self-centred and interested in other women so she dumps him. Then a full moon hits and they end up swapping bodies. This means that they have to spend more time around one another despite hating one another but slowly and surely they begins to tolerate one another to the point where the fall for one another once again while they try to live each other's life. Pretty stock-standard body swap stuff, not really funny but Karvan and Pearce do OK playing one another without making a whole lot of impact. A bit disappointing if anything...

Redheads is a 1992 thriller where juvenile delinquent Lucy (Claudia Karvan) visits her lawyer (Mark Hembrow) in the dead of night after stealing some jewellery which she wants him to fence plus they are sleeping with one another despite him beginning to have regrets. Then at 2:30am, there's a knock at the door where a person in a motorcycle helmet shoots dead the lawyer and Lucy barely escapes in her underwear and a videotape of the murder. She then gets herself arrested so that she can get sent back to the detention centre. Now Lucy needs a new lawyer and it comes in Diana (Catherine McClements), who's never tried a case before. Then Lucy's clothes turn up and she gets the feeling someone knows something so she gives her clothes away only for that person to mysteriously die from a hot shot of drugs. Then Lucy is almost drowned in a bath and it becomes quite clear the killer knows she was a witness. Lucy escapes and hides out with Diana only for a number of suspects to come forward wanting Lucy for themselves. Fairly silly thriller which plays up a very obvious red herring and then the killer is unveiled in a spectacularly silly way just to rub it in. Karvan and McClements are OK although the significance of them being redheads doesn't extend much beyond it being the title although there's a heavy-handed mention of Lucy being obsessed with matches (Redheads) but even that is never made obvious. Also the movie is set in Brisbane but apart from a brief mention of a Brisbane suburb and a final sweeping shot of the skyline, it could've been set anywhere it's that anonymous. Get the feeling this would've worked better as a more comedic movie considering how silly it get at times and occasionally it threatens to but never does.

As always with Classics the quality can differ but Dating the Enemy is from a passable DVD. Redheads was released straight-to-video which seems strange considering the bright young female leads. It looks like it'll never advance beyond that in quality, which is fine, a little dark perhaps but nothing too bad. While there's no real nudity in either of these movies from Claudia, there's plenty of find on this site as she's had a nude scene in 10 productions. I think that might be pretty much it to cap for the moment as there doesn't seem to be much left from her I haven't seen.

Update for 22 May...

A couple of new Spanish movies.

There was already a Spanish movie called Venus starring Ester Expósito that was released only months ago, so here's another one. That is a crazy-arse horror movie, this Venus is a very different movie. It is a time-bending romantic drama about a man who comes back to his hometown for his father's funeral and meets someone he grew up and it brings back memories of when they first met as well as the band he used to be a part of. It's very talky and a little tricky but I thought it was something interesting and a little different.

Also below is the new movie from nutty director Eduardo Casanova, La Piedad, who loves a bit of body horror but in a way that even David Cronenberg would take pause. His previous movie Pieles was about physically deformed people who are looking for love. This movie is about the absurd relationship between mother and adult son and somehow it's related to what's going on in North Korea which bodes well for that relationship. A few actors from his previous movies are back including Ana Polvorosa who at least looks normal here. I have some doubt that the explicit pissing scene in this movie is her but considering she played someone with her mouth and arsehole swapped in Pieles, then maybe my doubts can be assuaged. Interesting to see that Casanova directed a couple of episodes of the recent TV series Nacho, which strangely makes sense.

Update for 21 May...

Continuing Australian Classics with another Rolf de Heer movie.

Dance Me to My Song is a 1998 drama about Julia (Heather Rose) who has fairly severe cerebral palsy but lives in her own home although she needs care which she gets from her harried, abusive at-home nurse Madelaine (Jo Kennedy from Starstruck). Not only is Madelaine unreliable, she impersonates Julia on the phone, brings men to the house to have sex with and also steals from her when she remembers that she's supposed to be looking after her. One day while Madelaine is out, Julia goes out the front of her house and gets the attention of a man who is walking by, Eddie (John Brumpton) and she gets him to help her despite him not really wanting to be there but he takes a liking to her. Also every once in a while her sister Rix (Rena Owen) comes and visits her and gets Julia out of the house. Eddie keeps coming back to visit Julia and they strike up a friendly bond but Julia wants more and gets Madelaine's help in initating it. The first attempt ends with Julia chickening out and Madelaine decides to seduce Eddie. Then Julia makes another attempt to go further with Eddie without Madelaine's help and when she finds them together, she flips out and takes it out on Julia causing incredible tension between the two and an increase in the abuse Madelaine gives towards Julia. Things come to a head when Julia gets Madelaine fired and she doesn't take it well.

Co-written by Heather (who briefly appears in Bad Boy Bubby as one of the disabled patients Bubby bonds with late in the movie), this is a fairly charming movie that doesn't down play Heather's disability for a nice movie and instead becomes a far more rewarding movie. The first 15 minutes are a tough slog, there's no sugar-coating about Julia's disability or of the abuse that Madelaine performs on Julia with and without her knowledge. One moment, Madelaine seems nice and gets along with Julia but she can turn just as quickly and Julia tries to get her own back by attempting to ram Madelaine in her wheelchair. Dance Me to My Song is a well-made movie that is uncomproming about disability and the relationships disabled people have. The three lead performances are very good and the relationship between Julia and Eddie is handled quite well without getting overly sexual. There are hard-to-watch scenes in the movie but in fact it's quite accessible after it's opening scenes, more than some of de Heer's other movies.

As always with VHS rips, the quality is down but the videos below are pretty good. I know that this movie was released on DVD strangely as a hidden feature on Rolf de Heer 6 movie (7 including this movie) DVD pack but that has been out-of-print for probably 15 years. There's been no effort to re-release any of de Heer's movies outside of Bad Boy Bubby getting another version every couple of years. Also interesting to see he has a new movie out, The Survival of Kindness, his first in 10 years which looks about as accessible as his movies usually are.

Update for 20 May...

Today's Australian Classic is a movie I capped back in the day but have never gotten around to re-capping it as I thought it would take a long time. Well, it took a while but it isn't as insurmountable as it once was. If only I could get the movie in HD.

Alexandra's Project is a 2003 domestic thriller set over the course of Steve's (Gary Sweet) 45th birthday. As he gets ready for work he spends some time with his kids and there's a little bit of tension between him and his wife Alexandra (Helen Buday) but nothing seems too out of the ordinary. As soon as he leaves for work, Alexandra tells the kids they aren't going to school and they can help her prepare for their father's birthday celebrations. Steve has a good day at work and leaves expecting a celebration but he arrives home and finds the house deserted with the electricity cut off except for the television and the VCR. He also sees a video camera set up on a tripod and a birthday gift. He opens it and finds a video with a message to play it. Steve watches and is greeted with a striptease from his wife before she sits down and starts talking about their relationship. Boring!!! So he fast-forwards the video and what he sees next will begin a night of viewing he'll never forget for a long time. A simple premise from director Rolf de Heer (numerous movies most notably Bad Boy Bubby) but an insanely intriguing one that delivers multiple gut punches as we watch Steve's life implode on videotape. Both Sweet and Buday are excellent in what is basically a two-hander after the first twenty minutes where it's just Sweet reacting to what he's seeing on the tape. Buday spends most of the movie wearing not very much and it must've been a hell of an effort to get all the beats right. On rewatch, there's one or two hints early in the tape as to what's to come but you'd barely notice them on first watch. The twists are wild and leave Steve who started by thinking he had everything with nothing, his whole life stripped of what he thought he held dear. I hadn't seen the movie since I capped it back in 2004 (so almost 20 years and my memory is I think I saw in theatres back in the day) but it's still works after all this time.

One of the reasons I haven't re-capped it until now is I was kind of hoping it would come out in HD but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening. de Heer is such an eclectic filmmaker which makes his movies a hard sell for the general public, I mean even his most known movie, Bad Boy Bubby is not an easy watch (the first 30 minutes alone would wipe out most of the audience hence why it only has a decently sized cult following). Alexandra's Project is a little more accessible than that movie but just never clicked outside of his usual audience. I'll never understand how things get an audience...

As far as the actors go, Gary Sweet is still one of the most prolific actors in Australia while Helen Buday pretty much quit acting after this although she had a pretty sporadic career before starting with Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, which apart from this movie might be he most recognised role. She was also the female lead in de Heer's 1991 movie Dingo starring Colin Friels and jazz legend Miles Davis.

Update for 18 May...

Still sticking in the 90s with a bunch of movies I found in the pile. Didn't realise I had The Big Squeeze which I must've got of Tubi at some stage and there's a fair bit of sexy stuff in the movie so why not finally cap it.

For a long time I strangely thought Hellbound was a Hellraiser movie starring Chuck Norris (there is a Hellraiser movie called Hellbound) which sounds like such a loony idea until I finally watched and capped them a few years back, I was disappointed that it wasn't so. Not that it couldn't be as this movie isn't too dissimilar from the later Hellraiser movies where it's just a cop thriller with Pinhead turning up for a scene or two. Basically, Hellbound is a cop thriller where Chicago cops Chuck Norris and his partner go to Israel to track down a killer demon with the help of professor strangely played by Norris's Walker: Texas Ranger co-star Sheree J. Wilson. Turns out this was the final ever Cannon movie before they bust and this movie is pretty low rent considering the type of movies they were releasing in the 80s. It also explains why they went to Israel.

I remember seeing Cool and the Crazy on late night TV back in the 90s when Alicia Silverstone was at the peak of her popularity so it's good to see it again. It was a part of TV movie series that also included the Girls in Prison movie starring Anne Heche so now I need to find that.

Update for 14 May...

Another quick look at an Australian movie.

1MC: Something of Vengeance is a 2010 exploitation revenge thriller where Sarah (Liliya May) arrives back in Australia from Russia after leaving with her mother where they fled their horrible family. She is back to get revenge on the family that destroyed her and her mentally disabled twin brother Billy (James Saivanidis) who was left behind and tortured by the family. One-by-one Sarah kills members of the incestuous family before setting up for a final showdown with the remaining members. That's pretty much it except for some asides that act as social satire and don't really work with the ugly nature of the rest of the movie. The movie is pretty basic and quite nasty at times, particularly from the patriarch John (Laurence Coy) who has no problems raping his own family members or just bashing someone 'for a laugh'. He's quite menacing and so is his brother played by Terry Serio and they strangely seem to a have a very close incestuous relationship with one another. Apart from that the movie is fairly amateurish in plotting and story, Sarah isn't given much more to do than set up and look good while getting fairly basic revenge with bizarre weapons on her horrible family. Not a great movie but at least it tries something different with the family relationship.

A little bit of nudity from the only two actresses of consequence in the movie. Liliya May has done a bit of acting in Russian stuff and has a brief side-boob scene in the Australian movie Any Questions for Ben? where she plays a temperamental Russian tennis player (a movie where Rachael Taylor also has a nude scene). Strangely there's a few actors in small roles in the movie that went on to have decent careers overseas like Meegan Warner and Callan McAuliffe who both appear in an ill-judged 50s sitcom parody.

Update for 13 May...

Back to the Australian movies. Some quick synopses:

On My Own is a 1991 Australian/Canadian/Italian co-production about a teen boy Simon (Matthew Ferguson from the La Femme Nikita TV series) who is shipped off to a boarding school in Canada while his father works in Hong Kong and his mother (Judy Davis) is living with her new beau in England and is in and out of hospital. At school, he makes friends through playing football and has a crush on a girl (Rachel Blanchard) but doesn't know how to talk to her. When his mother visits him at the school, he finds out the reason why she's in and out of hospital. Fairly forgettable drama, nothing all that remarkable about it. Probably why it's near impossible to find. And while it's clearly more a Canadian movie, it was funded by Australian money and is helped by Judy Davis playing one of major roles.

At Last... Bullamakanka: The Motion Picture is a 1983 'wacky' comedy set in a mythical outback town of Bullamakanka where a group of local radicals led by L.D (Mark Hembrow) and helped by his girlfriend Clare (Alyson Best) and his right hand man T.M (Iain Gardiner) go about spoiling things for the local mayor Rhino Jackson (Steve Rackman) who is trying to impress the senator (Robert Baxter). In the process, the radicals rig an election, the Miss Bullamakanka contest and then a horse race that the mayor himself is trying to rig. Features a bunch of cameos from celebrities like John Farnham (his cameo features a whole bunch of homophobic slurs, not said by John thankfully), Angry Anderson (in dual roles), 'Molly' Meldrum, Gordon Elliott (later of Hard Copy fame) and a whole bunch of music mostly from the Mushroom Label. Oh and the film is an absolute unwatchable mess, a meandering made-up as you go plot, awfully unfunny jokes, a whole bunch of low-level sleazy shit going on and no memorable cameos at all, just appearances. They just got anything made in the 80s and this what happens when there's no quality control whatsoever. Didn't even get a cinema release in Australia despite it's numerous cameos and barely got a release on VHS. It's the type of movie that you could fool a few rubes into watching just on who's involved in the movie. Just complete garbage, could be a contender for the worst Australian movie ever.

As always with VHS rips, the quality is an issue and On My Own is not too bad but I had a bit of problem with the initial bigger version of Bullamakanka I had which was interlaced pretty badly (the scene with the naked girls jumping around was unwatchable) so I junked it and found a better quality albeit smaller version on YouTube.

Update for 11 May...

Digging into a pile of movies I've gotten from Tubi.

Facade is a movie I remember seeing on video shelves back in the day but never gotten around to the watching it possibly because I thought it was too B-grade. It looked like a typical 90s thriller but having just watched it, it's a movie that it very much of the 90s, a Tarantino-type plot structure where a whole group of people's stories interact eventually. It's not much of a thriller, it's more of a weird comedy before it hits the last third where the movie becomes so ridiculous it stops making sense or coming to an obvious conclusion and becomes something near impossible to describe. There's so many wacky characters in this movie who make so little sense as to why they are there. A sexy nun (Dawn Eason) just walks into Eric Roberts house and they interact for a while, most of the time she lolls around naked/semi-naked. Angus MacFadyen plays some sort of shady middle-man who gets arrested and then starts impersonating Napoleon. He has an assistant played by Patricia Velasquez that I can't figure out what she was doing there. There's the usual 90s hitman plot thrown in for good measure which is probably the best and most understandable part of the movie. Otherwise, I'm at a loss as to what it's all about. It loses the plot and seems quite happy with doing so.

Update for 10 May...

Digging into the DVDs and today's update includes the 1993 erotic drama Boxing Helena, a bizarre movie that would in no way be made today without being laughed out of town. Let's face it, the exact moment in time it was released was probably the only time it could've been made as the idea is so ridiculous and insane. Unsurprisingly, the movie is pretty much disappeared from public consciousness and it barely made a ripple when it was released. I had to look up whether it even got a cinema release in Australia and apparently it did. IMDB says it went straight-to-video in Britain which isn't at all a surprise.

Written and directed by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David and has pretty much none of his sensibilities. For the most part it's a two-hander between Julian Sands and Sherilyn Fenn as he looks after her when she is hit by a car and has her legs amputated. It then gets even weirder when he takes her arms, all the more trying to please her and eventually winning her over. The best that can be said that at least the stalker is a man for once. Some thing I'd completely memory-holed was that Bill Paxton is in the movie as Sherilyn Fenn's early boyfriend and he has this amazing head of hair in the movie. It then ends in a completely ridiculous way that I'm not sure I understand, something like it was all a dream. Kinda hoping I too will wake up dreaming that I watched this movie but it looks like I did actually watch it...

The best known thing about this movie is that Kim Basinger was successfully sued for $9 million after pulling out of the movie. I remember local magazines going crazy for this story as Basinger was one of the biggest names in the world at the time. Remember all those stories about her owning a town? Hard to believe now that she was just that big in the early 90s. I wonder if she's glad that she didn't end up being involved in this disaster of a movie, I'm guessing yes.

A quick update from an Australian movie from a few years ago. I watched the 2019 movie Cult Girls when it was released and was hoping to cap it but go stuck on the names of some of the actresses as the credits are incredibly vague plus there was anyone of note. So I put it in the pile and of course it got lost to time like most things in the pile. Still can't identify everyone and there's one actress with a heart tattoo in two separate scenes that I haven't been able to identify still.

Sadly no nudity from Saara Lamberg (she has a body double), who does have some nudity from her 2017 directorial debut Innuendo.

More from the pile, this time 2001 Larry Clark directed drama Bully, so you know what to expect. Lots of naked and semi-naked people, particularly young men. Lots of young people hanging out doing dumb shit, this movie having the ultimate thing of dumb shit when the group decide to kill a particularly nasty acquaintance. I think this is probably Larry Clark's best movie, his style works for the material really well and he gets some pretty good performances from the actors, Nick Stahl is very good as a real piece of shit.
