Australian and New Zealand Actress Nude Guide February 2024

Australian movies: 1972-1973

Things are slowly starting to develop in the Australian film industry which gives me the opportunity to go through two years in this update. You'll find that many of the same actresses appear nude in multiple movies in this time so that tells you how small the talent pool was.

1972

The Adventures of Barry McKenzie

A number of early movies were very Australian comedies, known as 'ocker' comedies where the comedy is of a very Australian sensibility and the lead character, usually male, is the most Australian man ever. That basically the conceit of this Bruce Beresford directed movie where Barry 'Bazza' McKenzie (Barry Crocker) goes to Britain which was considered a rite-of-passage for young Australians at the time and kind of still is. Basically, Bazza is an Aussie in Britain to the bafflement and bemusement of the British and there's a few well-known Aussie and British comedians thrown in. Probably would've been hilarious in 1972 (it does have a 1974 sequel) but the comedy has dated badly.

There's a little bit of nudity in the movie from British actress Maria O'Brien plus some unknown actresses in a couple of other scenes

You can find a synopsis and the collages and HD videos from The Adventures of Barry McKenzie here. A preview is below.

Night of Fear

52 minute movie that was supposed to be a TV pilot but got a cinema release in 1973. A very odd horror movie about an outlier who comes across a lost woman near his home and stalks her. There's no dialogue and it's very exaggerated but the movie has strangely developed a cult following when rediscovered by Umbrella Entertainment nearly 20 years ago. No idea why as time hasn't been kind to the movie and because there's no dialogue the acting is wildly exaggerated and some scenes are utterly ridiculous.

There's a little bit of nudity from Carla Hoogeveen, mostly side-boob.

You can find a synopsis and the collages and HD videos from Night of Fear here. A preview is below.

Private Collection

Wacky comedy about two men trying to steal a valuable painting from a collector that plays as a slapstick comedy which ages the movie horrendously. At least there's a few laughs in The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, this movie is a total struggle.

Debut movie for Pamela Stephenson who's better known for her British comedy work and being married to comedian Billy Connolly. No nudity from her here but she has done nude scenes in other things like Bloodbath At The House Of Death, Stand Up Virgin Soldiers, The Day the Screaming Stopped and a sketch on Not the 9 O'Clock News. There's also a scene where two naked women are posing for an artist but I have no idea who either are. Another victim of the vague credits throughout this time.

There's no nudity in The Office Picnic, Shirley Thompson versus the Aliens, Sunstruck and the animated movie Marco Polo Jnr. versus the Red Dragon.

1973

Alvin Purple

Bawdy sex comedy that absolutely wouldn't fly today but is played for fun despite an incredibly dodgy plot where the perennially jobless Alvin Purple (Graeme Blundell) finally gets a job as a phony psychiatrist where he fucks his 'patients' and films the results which we then see. A lot of nudity in the movie including from some fairly well-known actresses and many would be naked again in subsequent movies (including Libido below). There's the feel that actresses basically 'turned up, took off their clothes, showed their stuff, got paid and then left' about the actresses in this movie. Abigail was a well-known sexpot at the time but they could only get a see-through blouse scene from her in this movie. She would eventually get naked in the next year's sequel.

You can find a synopsis and the collages and HD videos from Alvin Purple here. A preview is below.

Dalmas

Very experimental movie from director Bert Deling (better known for making the 1975 junkie drama Pure Shit) about a TV filmmaker (soon-to-be director John Duigan playing himself) who makes a documentary about a bunch of hippies just doing nothing. Honestly, I got no idea what's going on and it all seems a bit of a boring wank. Occasionally a sort-of known actor turns up like Max Gillies as a wheelchair bound junkie ex-cop who we get to see 'shoot up' (I doubt it was him doing though), Roger Ward as a psycho cop or the father from Storm Boy who has a drug freak-out. Sadly, that sounds more interesting than it is as the movie is basically 98 minutes of interviews of fuck-know who and experimental filming.

There's a brief nude scene from an unknown actress (there was no credits at all in the version I watched and there's only very cursory credits available elsewhere).

Unknown in Dalmas

7588kb 26sec 640x480 (brief breasts and bum)

Libido

Four part portmanteau movie with each story about sex made by a different director. So the tone of each story changes wildly from each story. There's plenty of nudity throughout. Elke Neidhart and Debbie Nankervis are also both naked in Alvin Purple (see above) and Debbie has a very similar scene in both movies where she 'begs' a man to 'rape her' which is very odd. Robyn Nevin has a brief nude scene in the movie playing a nun but in the trailer for Libido there's some extra nudity which I hadn't capped before and can be seen below.

You can find a synopsis and the collages and videos from Libido here. A preview is below.

There's no nudity in Come Out Fighting, Lost in the Bush and the kids movie Avengers of the Reef. I haven't been able to find the movies Linehaul, Moving On and The Sabbat of the Black Cat so it is unknown as to where there's anything to cap in any of these movies.

Back to one year in the next update as 1974 does not skimp on the nudity.

Australian movies: 1971

The Australian film industry is slowly developing, still mostly being held up by international productions although this year we get the first of the Australian New Wave movies in Stork.

1971

Bello Onesto Emigrato Australia Sposerebbe Compaesana Illibata (A Girl in Australia)

Italian made movie that was shot in Australia but is in Italian so it's doubtful many Australians have ever seen it. Basically an Italian man (Alberto Sordi) is working in Australia and lonely so he decides to get an Italian wife (Claudia Cardinale) but things don't go to plan. He spends some time with her and manages to win her over. There's no nudity in the movie but there's a bit of sexy stuff from Cardinale who looks amazing throughout. And she's still acting well into her 80s!

1484kb 8sec 640x350 (brief bra)

10906kb 43sec 640x350 (dress lifts up to reveal panties)

Bonjour Balwyn

Small independant movie starring future director John Duigan (most notable to this site for Sirens but there's so many more of his movies that I've capped) where he plays a magazine editor who's about to lose it all unless he does something drastic. Very low budget and experimental. There's a scene where Duigan and a woman audition for a sleazy director looking for the next Hair and he asks both to strip off but we only see the nudity in silhouette so only get a glimpse of the both of them. No idea who the actress is but her character's name is Jane. The credits only list the main actors with character names and I think she only appears in this scene.

Unknown in Bonjour Balwyn

14301kb 1min 54sec 704x536 (full frontal nudity in silhouette, panties, lengthy)

A City's Child

Strange drama about a lonely woman (Monica Maughan) who reverts into her own world of dolls after a her mother dies. Then a man (Sean Scully) enters her life and she seems happy but the nagging voice of her mother haunts her and she struggles to keep the man. Also, she could be dreaming that she's with the man. Not much in the way of nudity in this movie with some side-boob from Donna Drake as someone the lonely woman imagines being with her man.

Not high quality videos as they are from a TV showing of the movie but it appears that this movie is on Prime so that suggests it is available in decent quality.

Donna Drake in A City's Child

8745kb 29sec 716x540 (side-boob/arm covering breasts, sex scene)

Nickel Queen

Maybe the first movie made in Perth with well-known British actress Googie Withers, who would later settle in Australia for the second half of her life, and her husband developing a star vehicle for her. She plays a tough-as-nails pub owner Meg who own a mining claim that is much wanted by an unscrupulous mining company so they make her an offer of a million dollars and she takes it and starts living the life. Also a group of hippies arrive in town headed by Claude (radio DJ who later turned popular conservative Sydney shock jock John Laws) and they make an impact. Also a number of people want to take Meg for a ride including Claude who cleans himself up to do so because hippies are broke. Silly stuff but a fairly harmless and fun movie. It is funny watching the very one-dimensional Laws playing an unconvincing hippie and not the least surprising when he decides to clean up and get a share of Meg's money.

Only nudity in the movie is from one of the hippies after she strips off her dress before entering a pool. She is probably listed in the credits but we never get any of the names of the hippies and there's a whole lot of characters listed I have no idea who they could be.

Unknown in Nickel Queen

5024kb 18sec 640x480 (brief breasts, panties)

Stork

Usually listed as the first Australian New Wave movie, this is Tim Burstall's second movie after the turgid melodrama 2000 Weeks and this is a very different movie, a 'raunchy' comedy.

There's some brief nudity from Jacki Weaver (in the previous update she was interviewed for The Naked Bunyip and she said she hadn't been asked to do nudity before. Well...) and some brief side-boob from Jan Friedl.

You can read more and find the collages and videos from the movie here. A preview is below.

Wake in Fright

Almost lost international production about an English school teacher who is trying to get to Brisbane to meet up with his Australian girlfriend only to get stuck in 'The Yabba' where his nightmare begins. Excellent movie I actually watched in cinemas when it was re-issued back in 2009.

Not really any nudity in the movie. English actress Sylvia Kay is in an open dress and covers her breasts with her arms. Nancy Knudsen is in a bathing suit in a flashback seen numerous times throughout the movie.

You can find a synopsis and the videos from the movie here. A preview is below.

Walkabout

Nicolas Roeg directed co-production about an English teen girl (Jenny Agutter) and her younger brother who get lost in the Australian desert and are helped by an Indigenous teen (David Gulpilil). Another excellent movie.

There's plenty of nudity from Agutter, full frontal and bottom, throughout the movie. You can find a synopsis of the movie plus multiple collages and videos here. A preview is below.

That's about all I can find at this moment. The movie Demonstrator has nudity in it from Wendy Lingham and a bunch of others but I can't find a copy. Other movies - And the Word was Made Flesh, Stockade and Sympathy in Summer may or may not have nudity in them but they are unavailable. There is no nudity in the following movies: Country Town and Homesdale.

Australian movies: 1970

Heading into the 1970s and the Australian film industry is still in it's fledgling stage, still mostly entrepreneurs and hobbyists. Things are starting to cook with the movie Ned Kelly starring Mick Jagger released this year but there's only a handful of movies released this year.

1970

Beyond Reason

Independent movie from the director of Clay (1965) that looks at a group of doctors, nurses and patients at a mental health hospital who believe that a nuclear bomb has exploded in Melbourne (ah, OK) and they hide in the hospital's bunker only to get locked in. Things quickly devolve from there. Almost completely lost movie, the copy I found is pretty ratty but watchable and the credits are very thin with only the main actors given their character names and everyone else just listed. There's an actress who has a couple of scenes where she takes off her shirt at the drop of a hat, exposing her breasts but I have no idea who she is despite her character's name being Lydia. There's about 4 actresses listed in the credits, so it's doubtless one of them.

The Naked Bunyip

Documentary that uses the fictional premise of a reporter (Graeme Blundell of Alvin Purple fame basically playing the same character with less female interest) who is asked to look into the state of sex around Australia. Over two and a quarter hours long and quite an extensive lot of the second half is about homosexuality (a very 1970 version of it). There's a lot of interviews (including a bafflingly unfunny one with Dame Edna Everage) and a fair bit of nudity from anonymous people as barely anyone is named except for 'important' talking heads. Locally famous transwoman Carlotta is interviewed about her show Les Girls and her life which is still surprisingly prescient about current trans issues. There's a 2014 telemovie about Carlotta starring Jessica Marais that has a little bit of nudity in it. Jacki Weaver is also interviewed saying she's never been asked to take her clothes off. That would change soon (see Alvin Purple). Otherwise, I have no idea who anyone else is.

In some of the videos below you'll see scenes where an animated picture of a 'naked bunyip' appears which comes up in parts where the filmmakers were told to censor the scene. It comes up surprisingly regularly and in the most random of moments. A lesbian kiss is censored. Very strange.

I capped these from a VHS rip so there might be an issue particularly with the audio but the videos are otherwise fine. I think I have the DVD somewhere but I couldn't be fucked finding it.

The Set

I capped this movie back in May 2021 after a HD release was released. Odd movie about two men who find one another despite being interested in women. Tries to have a discussion of gay men but is very coy about it.

There's a bit of nudity in the movie from Hazel Phillips, Julie Rodgers and Ann Aczel. Previews of the nudity from the movie feature below.

That Lady from Peking

Another movie from the American director of Color Me Dead (1969, see previous update) and It Takes All Kinds (1969) who made another B-grade movie for American audiences starring American actors Carl Benz, Nancy Kwan and singer Bobby Rydell. This time it's a spy thriller with an East Asian angle.

Interestingly, in the versions available online there's a scene where Australian actress Sandy Gore is in the bath but there's some very dramatic edits in the scene heavily suggesting something was cut out. Thankfully Ozmovies has posted pics from an uncut version of the movie where we see Sandy's breasts and bottom. I've post a few pics below but that is all that's available at the moment. Generally surprised to see Sandy in a nude scene as I can't remember her having any such scenes in the many things I've seen her in and she still turns up fairly regularly in TV and movies. Hopefully the uncut version can be found.

Other movies released in 1970 including Ned Kelly and Squeeze a Flower have no nudity while Strange Holiday is a kids movie. Jack and Jill: A Postscript has some sexy stuff in it but the actors are fairly unknown and it isn't worth the time to cap. Another couple of movies, Dead Easy and Nothing Like Experience are not available and it isn't clear whether there's anything worth capping in them.

Australian movies: 1960s

Found that I have capped an overwhelming majority of Australian movies made between 1970 to 2010, so I came up the idea to do a review of each year every week until the present day. Well, I was going to begin at the beginning of 2024 but as you can see it's now February and this is the first of these updates. So this might take a lot longer than I was hoping.

The main goal is to finish off the remaining movies I haven't watched/capped between 1970-2010 so that I only have left everything after that where the number of Australian movies exponentially jumped as it became far easier to make them. Hopefully that can be achieved save for movies that are impossible to find or have completely disappeared.

The Australian film industry began in earnest in 1970/1971 when the Prime Minister at the time, John Gorton, helped institute the Australian Film Development Corporation which was to help fund an Australian film industry. Before that, movies were basically the domain of entrepreneurs and dedicated film societies that ran off the smell of an oily rag. There weren't a lot made and they were usually pushed out being shown by big American studios. But a small number of movies were made before 1970.

I'm going to start with the 1960s as there were only a handful of movies made and most of them are available to look at. For the most part I'll have original content or link to where I've previously capped the movie. Sometimes I'll mention the excellent Ozmovies site (I won't link to it here but it's easy-to-find via search) when I can't find the movie at it has catalogued most Australian movies and has a convenient 'Downunder Club' section that highlights sexy stuff in the movies.

1966

They're a Weird Mob

Quintessential Australian fish-out-of-water comedy made by the great film partnership of Powell/Pressburger after director Michael Powell was basically banished from Britain after making the highly controversial 1960 serial killer drama Peeping Tom. The plot is pretty simple, an Italian man arrives in Sydney with the promise of a sports writing job with his cousin but once here he finds his cousin has gone broke and absconded and he's all alone with no money and can't understand what Australians are saying. A fun movie but very much of the time and even I as an Australian struggled to understand some of it.

There's no nudity in the movie as it's pretty G-rated but plenty of bikini action on the beach.

Journey Out of Darkness

Long forgotten movie about Indigenous man (Kamahl, who's actually a Sri Lankan immigrant better known for his singing who's still kicking around as seen by his nutty social media presence) who is taken to prison by a trooper through the unforgiving desert. Can't find the movie but there's this scene of Julie Williams nude which going by the Ozmovies site seems to be the only nudity in the movie.

1969

2000 Weeks

Tawdry arthouse drama about a man deciding whether he wants to be with his wife (Eileen Chapman) or his lover (Jeanie Drynan). A bit of sexy stuff with mild nudity in the movie from Eileen Chapman. Some sexy stuff from Jeanie Drynan who's not usually known for such scenes but it's very mild. The director would change tack and went on to make the sex-filled Alvin Purple movies and has apparently said he wishes for this movie to never be seen again. That's probably why the movie seems to be only available as a bootleg workprint. The version I have has no tail credits and a timecode. Better than nothing I guess.

Adam's Woman

Period drama about an American (Beau Bridges) who is sentenced to death in England but is sent to Australia instead where he is set-up with a wife (English actress Jane Merrow) and they try to make a go of it on the land. Starring an American and full of British actors, it's a surprise this is an Australian movie but it was shot entirely here and various known Australian actors turn up throughout the movie. Starts like a bawdy comedy but gets serious real quick. The only nudity is from Jane Merrow as she is bathing in the river but there's also a bit of sexy stuff from others.

Age of Consent

Michael Powell's next movie after They're a Weird Mob, which I capped back in May 2021. You can find the update and more info on the movie there. English actress Helen Mirren has a number of nude scenes and Australian actress Clarissa Kaye-Mason (who would go on to marry the lead actor James Mason) also shows her breasts.

Color Me Dead

Strangely, this a remake of D.O.A (1950) about a man (American actor Tom Tryon) who has been injected with a poison and before he dies he tries to find out his killer. Also features American actress Carolyn Jones best known as Morticia in The Addams Family plus a bunch of great movies from the 50s. There is some stripper nudity in this movie from unknowns Alisa Teran and Joanne Smith who were probably just strippers in real-life. There's also some sexy stuff from Suzy Kendall (not the one from To Sir, With Love) who seems to be having a ball playing a minx.

You Can't See 'round Corners

A feature-length movie based on a TV show of the same name (which was not uncommon at the time). It's all pretty mild but there's some brief sexy stuff from Carmen Duncan who worked plentifully in Australia and even turned up in American soaps. I remember seeing her turn up in the Adelaide shot Hotel Mumbai which seems to be her last role before she died.

Carmen Duncan in You Can't See 'round Corners

22414kb 1min 20sec 720x540 (brief bra, 'nude' under covers)

That's all for the 60s as far as I can tell. There's a 1968 movie called Time in Summer that may have very brief nudity in it but it's impossible to find so I can't confirm it. There's also a 1969 experimental movie Marinetti from the director of Palm Beach that I can't confirm if there's nudity in it but the poster for the movie has a naked woman on it so there's probably a good chance it does.

Other movies released in the 1960s like The Sundowners, Shadow of the Boomerang (both 1960), Clay (1965), a couple of Japanese co-productions from 1968 Koya No Toseinin and Moeru Tairiku, It Takes All Kinds (1969) and a couple of family movies Little Jungle Boy and a Skippy movie The Intruders (both 1969) all have no nudity in them.

As you can see there was only about 20 Australian feature-length movies for the entire 1960s. Into the 1970s it quickly became about 20 movies a year before an explosion in the 1980s. The goal is to do an overview of each year every week so we'll see how that goes. If I have time I might include New Zealand movies but the first one isn't until 1977 so I have a few updates to decide whether to include them or do a separate update after I finish with Australian movies.
