Update for 28 April...

One more Spanish movie this time the 2003 comedy Torremolinos 73, one of my favourite Spanish movies which played a fair bit on SBS in the 2000s. Set in the 1970s. it's a funny look at a couple struggling with purpose until they are introduced to a way to make money by making 'sexy movies' for the Scandinavian market under the guide of education. Turns out the husband (Javier Cámara) has a knack for making films and becomes inspired by Ingmar Bergman while his wife Carmen (Candela Peña) becomes his star and they become closer while making a bit of money which improves their lives. But there's one thing missing, Carmen wants a baby but it turns out her husband can't produce so things become tense between the two just as she's about to star in his first feature film with the help of the Danish crew and star (Mads Mikkelsen). Then the husband's boss tells him that they need sex in the movie to sell it to the Scandinavian market. It's a crazy film with a wild premise but it works really well and the two leads are great and it's also great to see Mads Mikkelsen turn up as a dopey 'actor'.

Update for 26 April...

Another Spanish movie, the 2009 polygamy drama about chefs Dieta Mediterránea. Being meaning to cap this movie for a while as I recorded it off SBS back when it aired in 2015 and still have the stream but a cleaner HD copy became available. I think the main reason I hadn't capped it yet was because I thought it had a lot to do but it turns out that it's all fairly brief so I was able to knock it out quickly. Could've sworn this had more nudity in it too but both my recording and the HD copy are the same. Hmm...

Update for 20 April...

Another large update from the pile I've finally gotten around to capping, the 2008 comedy The House Bunny. Was going to cap it last year (and have been planning to for many years) but junked it after I saw the Anna Faris bottom scene and thought there's got to be an open matte version that shows more, found it, then got pissed off that I did all the work for nothing and didn't get back to it for several months.

Anyway, this movie feels surprisingly strange nowadays with Playboy no longer being large in the public conscience but mainly because the plot feels like a relic from ages ago. The young women of the struggling sorority would never be portrayed the way they are in the movie now. The movie is also just not good, it's held together by a likeable lead performance by Anna Faris but there's no other reason to see it. It has that Happy Madison/Adam Sandler comedy that doesn't work outside of movies he isn't starring in and even then it doesn't always work. Emma Stone is lumped with a terrible role and she's so much better in Easy A, almost a completely different actress her role is so terrible here. Ditto for Kat Dennings. All the stuff featuring Hugh Hefner and his 'wives' is so clunky and I have serious doubts Faris even met Hefner. I didn't think this movie would be such an oddity.

Update for 13 April...

Another large update from the pile, this time from the 1993 erotic thriller Save Me. Typical of the genre at the time: man gets into fling with a troubled/troublesome woman. Things go well for a while until the bodies start piling up and the man becomes the target. Then take your pick as to which woman in the cast turns out to be the murderer and in this movie it's Lysette Anthony as the only other woman of note in the cast is Olivia Hussey playing the man's ex and she's only in it for one forgettable scene in the beginning of the movie.

Some great nudity from Lysette in the movie (who also has a brief nude scene in Switch which I capped on Tuesday) but this is a very silly and dumb erotic thriller. I'm particularly fond of the ridiculous scene in the lingerie store where Lysette Anthony just asks to go in the back room to fuck around. Is this something you can do at any lingerie store? Amazing stuff.

Update for 9 April...

Let's move to the 1980s for the Australian Classics update with a couple of movies from 1984. Some quick synopses:

Fantasy Man is a comedy/drama about Nick (Harold Hopkins) who is going through a midlife crisis big time. He's not really attracted to his wife Liz (Jeanie Drynan), he hates his job and he develops a crush on the local fast food worker Donna (Kerry Mack) and he makes any excuse to talk to her. Nick also takes long showers like half-an-hour or longer and no-one knows what he's doing. Meanwhile Liz, encouraged by her neighbour friend Betty (Kate Fitzpatrick) starts seeing old flame Steve (James Healey) in a platonic matter. Nick gathers to courage to ask Donna out and she tells him to come along to an art class which gets absolutely ridiculous. Utterly silly movie, looks like it's going to be a sex comedy but there's no sex and has many ridiculous scenes that go about avoiding sex. There's a 10-15 minute segment where Nick desperately tries to have a shower which is so baffling I can't even describe how baffling it is. A truly bizarre movie and not in a good way.

Kindred Spirits is a drama about a dancer Julie (Julieanne Newbould) who has a vision of a man dying on the beach and it haunts her as it turns out it didn't actually happen. It turns out it did happen but back in the 1930s and she starts seeing the man who drowned around town. She tries to work out who it is and why she's having these visions and finds the man's long lost lover who is now elderly. But why is Julie having these visions and what fate awaits her. Pretty stock standard movie about a woman trying to find out why she is having these visions which is fairly forgettable until a truly out-of-nowhere ending that is so bizarre it feels like it's from another movie. Basically it turns out that the visions Julie is having are because she is actually dead and died in the Granville Train Crash, a real-life tragedy. It's... I got nothing...

A couple of fairly good VHS rips in this update, neither will probably get the upgrade as both movies seem to have premiered on the ABC in the 10BA era so they're more than likely tax dodges that have already served their purpose. Both movies are only 75 minutes and barely scrape to that length. Nothing all that special to cap from either movie either which is a shame as I like Kerry Mack and I've pretty much capped everything she's done (including some great nudity in Hostage: The Christine Maresch Story and The Lancaster Miller Affair) but Fantasy Man is the most sexless sex comedy I've ever seen.

Update for 8 April...

Sticking with the 70s for the Australian Classics, today's is a real rare find.

Palm Beach is a 1979 experimental drama that follows a group of disparate people who end up being connected in some way. Joe (Ken Brown) is collared by the police and to get out of his charge he is tasked to find a patsy who has LSD so he goes to the northern beaches and hooks up with old surfing pal Nick (surfing champion Nat Young) who shows him around town helping him with the most obvious of set-ups. Paul (Bryan Brown) is out-of-work and out of money and the only good thing in his life is his dancer girlfriend Kate (Julie McGregor). So he decides on desperate measures to get money and it goes as badly as can. A mother (Lyn Collingwood) has called up a private detective Larry (John Flaus) to find her runaway daughter Leilani (Amanda Berry) who has been missing for a fortnight. Leilani has hooked up with American yachtsman/drug trafficker Zane (David Lourie), Rupert (Peter Wright) and eventually Joe as she lives on the fringes of society and has no interest in going back to her mother. Very much an experimental movie with a constant radio running in the background of the entire movie and scenes bleeding into other scenes that makes it sound like scenes are playing out in the next room. It's quite strange and takes a while to get used to and it helps that not a lot is going on. Most of the acting is improvised so it kind of feels like a movie is been shot in the middle of real life happening, no more so than a surprisingly effective scene where Paul shoots a cop in a busy street. You can feel a palpable energy during it. Sadly not much else in the movie captures that energy but the movie keeps interest for the most part even if it there's no real high stakes in the end. There are also some scenes where you can see what the beaches of Home and Away looked like in the 70s, which is quite wild.

As always with VHS rips, the quality isn't great but it's not bad and considering the movie was never released properly so this is probably about as good as it gets. Not a lot of known actors in the movie sure Bryan Brown and John Flaus are still around and Lyn Collingwood was on Home and Away forever. Julie McGregor is best known as the dumb-as-shit secretary Betty in Australia's longest running sitcom Hey Dad!, which is now forbidden to mention in country because of some very bad things that happened.

Update for 6 April...

I said last week in the Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love update that I was going to try and finally cap a bunch of movies with a lot to cap plus hard to finish in a day because I was sick of looking at them and doing nothing about it. Well today's example in the 2001 Spanish drama Lucía y el Sexo which I should've capped years ago as it has a few of my faves and plenty of nudity.

I first saw this movie when it played at the old Lumiere Cinema in Melbourne in 2002 but I swear it was 2003, no idea why. That cinema is long gone now but there's a long lost Australian movie called Let Me Not that has a brief shot where the central couple are leaving the cinema and a poster for this movie is in the background so that dates when it was filmed (it was released/shown on Saturday night TV in 2006).

I think this might be my favourite Julio Medem movie, definitely seen it the most of his movies but it has a pretty good if entirely convoluted story, which he sort of replicates in his last movie, 2018's El Árbol De La Sangre. Hasn't made a movie since which is strange as he usually has a new one every 2-3 years but he does seem to have made a 'película sonora' or audio movie which is not much use for this site.

Update for 1 April...

For today's Australian Classics weekend update, a couple of late 70s Channel 9 telemovies that were made in South Australia. Some quick synopses:

The Sound of Love is a 1978 romantic drama about a deaf drifter (Celia De Burgh) and a race car mechanic who both end up at the Deaf Institute. The deaf drifter ends up there reluctantly after she runs out of luck robbing drivers who pick her up while the race car mechanic gets hit by his team driver in the pits and loses his hearing and is there to learn how to read lips. The drifter takes a liking to the mechanic and they hit it off but when the mechanic regains his hearing, the drifter thinks their relationship is over and goes on the run again. Not a bad story although not a lot happens but it has some interesting scenes involving hearing. The movie feels like it's both too long even at 72 minutes and a whole heap of stuff seems to have been cut out. The ending is a bit hoaky too with the drifter saved in the nick of time from being raped.

Harvest of Hate is a completely unbelievable 1979 terrorist thriller where terrorists kill the owner of a winery in South Australia and a young couple go to take it over and are kidnapped by 70s Muslim terrorists and taken hostage for some reason. The male hostage is Jewish so that's not something the Muslim terrorists need to know. As they wait for something to happen, one of the terrorists seduces the woman and attempts to get her to come to his harem (!!) and in the most predictable twist, one of the terrorists is an Englishman but he's actually an infiltrator who's trying to stop it. Makes not a jot of sense and is not believable in any way. The Muslim terrorists are portrayed as if they're from another era which suggests how much things have changed. Also gets more ridiculous by the minute. Definitely the worse of telemovies and it isn't even close.

There were actually 3 in the series with the third movie, The Plumber, was directed by Peter Weir and has gotten a fair bit of attention because of his involvement including getting a Bluray release overseas (it's also a pretty decent movie, rather creepy thriller). The two movies featured in this update have pretty much been forgotten except that The Sound of Love randomly played late at night in 2012 and I managed to record it and still have the original transport file which I found in the past couple of days, hence why this is today's update. Good luck with either of these two movies getting the treatment The Plumber has.

I've also included further videos from Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love as a viewer of the site told me of another version of the movie that has even more full frontal nudity. I don't know how many versions of the movie but I think this must be the definitive uncut version.
