A look at 70s war action drama Spyforce

Spyforce was a war action drama set during World War II that aired between 1971-1973 and then replayed late at night on Channel 9 ad nauseam up until about 2017 and hasn't been seen in a while. It starred Jack Thompson, Peter Sumner, British actress Katy Wild who came to live in Australia and Redmond Phillips. It was a very well made and fairly expensive looking series, a lot of which was shot on location in places like New Guinea (including the infamous Manus Island), Singapore, Thailand and Fiji where Australian TV series generally looked cheap and studio bound. 42 episodes of the show where made, not many but considering the expense it probably was all they could afford.

The quality of the below videos vary. It took me over 4 years to record every single episode of the show from about 2010 on, mainly because episodes would air randomly and repeat regularly so I had a lot of repeats. Then I just didn't get around to capping them, put them on a hard drive and then that hard drive broke down and only the first 7 episodes survived as I was going to cap it at some stage. Recently, I searched another old hard drive and found a further 9 episodes in upscaled HD which was a nice bonus. The rest of the episodes are from a download, smaller videos that look like they were taken from the DVD. I'll upgrade when I can get access to better quality episodes.

Throughout the series, there are very occasional scenes of nudity. Technically, there are 5 scenes two of the nude scenes are seen out-of-focus.

 

Arna-Maria Winchester played a recurring role in the show, usually in black body paint(!) and she had nude scenes in two separate episodes which were apparently cut out in some versions of the show but it looks like the main versiom of the show left them in. She also had nude scenes in the 1980 movie The Chain Reaction and the 1983 telemovie Man of Letters, which I will hopefully get around to capping soon plus a side-boob scene in Alvin Rides Again.

Victoria Anoux had a brief out-of-focus nude scene in the episode she appeared in. She has a number of decent nude scenes in movies like Stone, The True Story of Eskimo Nell and Scobie Malone and a nip-slip in the TV series Luke's Kingdom. She quit acting in 1977 and is briefly interviewed for the Ozploitation documentary Not Quite Hollywood.

UPDATE:

After last week's update featuring Rachel Blakely, a reader alerted me to this extra scene from Tribe where Rachel is sunbathing naked and shows her breasts. Now, I have never seen this scene before and it definitely isn't in the broadcast version of Tribe, which I rechecked just in case. The scene could only fit in the first 10 minutes of the mini-series as the cruise goers were attacked 10 minutes in and this scene clearly takes place before they are attacked.

I have no idea where it's from; it could be a deleted scene from a DVD version of the mini-series or there could be another version of the mini-series. Also wondering about the quality as this is clearly DVD quality while the videos I made were VHS quality and I have never seen a DVD of this mini-series and definitely not in Australia.

Oversight: Rachel Blakely

While I've capped a fair amount of Australian and New Zealand productions, there are still a lot of little holes that I can still fill. One of the bigger holes is that I've haven't capped anything from Rachel Blakely, who has a few nude scenes in her time and it's time to rectify that.

Love Until... (1993?/1995?/1996?)

Hard to know when this Czech filmed Australian movie was actually made. I've seen in one place that it was filmed in 1993 which sort of make sense to how the actors look a little younger than their later stuff. It is listed on IMDB in 1995 but I think that is incorrect as it's the only place I've seen it listed as such. Anyway, the end of the movie lists it as 1996 which is later than I was expecting but it's also near impossible to verify as it doesn't look like the movie had a cinema release and it was never properly classified by the Ratings Board although the DVD I have gives it an arbitrary MA 15+ rating (which I would suggest as probably being too high as while the movie has a few nude scenes, they are all fairly brief and there's no actual sex and apart from that the rest of the movie is fairly mild). No classification also suggests it didn't play in the local video market which is odd but seeing as the movie got no money from funding commissions, isn't unusual either. The DVD of the movie I had come from the bargain bin from about 2003 and is made by a low rent company but is actually not too bad considering. I did cap the movie back in the day and have only just revisited it which is a mistake.

Well, Love Until... is a fairly straightforward love story set in a small town in the Czech Republic and in Prague where Jan (Dino Marnika) runs a small restaurant/B&B in a village with his put upon wife Karla (Maureen O'Shaughnessy) and his brother and sister-in law. One day three Australian women (possibly sisters but it's never mentioned as such) Madeleine (Rachel Blakely), Suzie (Dee Smart) and Joanne (Collette Roberts) come to town and eat and drink at the restaurant and stay a while and Jan falls for Madeleine but she has to go back to Prague to work where she is managing a struggling hotel and close to losing her job. Before leaving, she makes Jan an off to join her and he thinks about it. After the death of a dear friend and his business about to go under, Jan decides to take up Madeleine's offer and works at the hotel as a cook. They fall for one another and while their love is going strong, Madeleine is close to losing her job, so Jan, after a makeover, decides to help her by finding out what the problem is. But there's always that lingering thought of what he left behind. Pretty stock-standard stuff, but fairly enjoyable nonetheless. The plot never stretches itself and has a tidy if hasty ending which it probably doesn't deserve, then again it's strange that Jan leaves his wife to go to Prague in the first place. That whole relationship is very odd, I couldn't work out why Karla stuck around like she did, as if she didn't realise her husband had run off with another woman. It is strange watching Australian actors in a movie set in the Czech Republic, at least the three women friends are playing actual Australians. All the main cast seems to be Australian and all the minor parts are Czech actors, it's quite weird at times.

There's some good nudity in the movie from three Australian actresses. It was Rachel's nude debut and she has 3/4 fairly brief nude scenes but they are fairly good. Dee Smart brief shows her breasts as she takes her top off for a swim. She also has a nude scene in Back of Beyond and briefly shows her breasts and maybe more from a distance in the short Audacious, which I haven't seen in a while and must dig up. I'm pretty sure it's on the local DVD release of The Monkey's Mask (same director) which I thought I had but I can only find the British DVD which I also inexplicably got. Must try to find that. Maureen O'Shaughnessy had a nude scene in Signal One made around the same time.

Funnily enough when I saw the name Collette Roberts, I wondered if that was the same person as well-known one hit wonder Collette of Ring My Bell fame and sure enough as soon as she appeared on screen, I knew it was her. She even gets an 'Introducing' credit. Can't believe I never put two-and-two together before now. I think it's the only movie she ever made.

One Way Ticket (1997)

This was a 1997 telemovie for Channel 9 based on a notorious Melbourne jailbreak which gripped the country for a week in March 1993. It was pretty salacious and unsurprisingly the telemovie reflects that with a few sex/nude scenes including a 'bathing beauty' scene which totally happened... I've only ever seen TV rips off VHS screenings so the quality is down, but this one isn't too bad and it doesn't have an annoying TV watermark I've seen from another copy that's floating around.

Tribe (1999)

Two part mini-series the aired on Channel 7 which probably had American backing as it stars Antonio Sabato Jr and Joanna Cassidy as well as a bunch of Australian actors. I remember watching this back in the day and remember it being pretty terrible and seeing it again, it all came flooding back how bad it was. Rachel is lumbered with a French accent and then finds a World War II Japanese soldier's lair and starts acting like a samurai, which is really something to watch in 2021. The main villain is played by Grievous from Fire, one of the most baffling stupid characters in TV history, which is absolutely hilarious. So many silly little things and a lot of padding to get it out to 3 hours.

It does have a couple of nude scenes. A fairly decent one from Rachel, longer than I remember and another from Joanna Cassidy. I found an American version of this mini-series and of course it cut out the nude scenes. I don't know why I was expecting anything else. It's just good to see these scenes once again.

I doubt we will see this in better quality, it wasn't popular back in the day and it's mostly forgotten. It was also made by Crawford Productions, who as I've mentioned in previous posts are notorious stingy with releasing their popular stuff let alone getting a DVD release of their lesser known productions.

As for other stuff to cap from Rachel, The Lost World and Tales of the South Seas seems to have some good stuff if mostly implied nudity. There's not a lot else in her credits that is looking probable but if you have any suggestions, feel free to make them. I can't believe I haven't at least capped Love Until... before now. At least that's finally done.

A Look At Channel 9's 90s Telemovie Series The Feds

More VHS action, this time the series of 10 telemovies that aired from 1993-1996, that had a surprising amount of nudity. The Melbourne set telemovies were about the Federal Police solving major crimes with an international flavour. The only actor to be in every telemovie was Robert Taylor, a decent character actor best known to international audiences for being the lead in the US crime drama Longmire and was also the person that was getting scammed in the recent movie Focus.

The first telemovie that aired in 1993 was just titled The Feds and apart from Taylor had a completely different cast from the rest of the series. Taylor was joined by Sigrid Thornton and Bruno Lawrence with a bunch of mostly unknown and mildly known character actors plus it was one of the first productions for Rachel Griffiths, who plays one of the cops. Only one scene to cap of two unknown women who are in their underwear in a brief scene, nothing special. The telemovie ends with Bruno Lawrence's character being assassinated in a very similar way to an assistant commissioner of the Federal Police was, a case that has never actually being solved although someone did 20 years for it and then was found not guilty...

It should be noted that the following videos are VHS quality, recorded off the TV and the sound is very ordinary in some videos.

The next telemovie was Obsession which came out a year later with only Robert Taylor returning and he is joined by Angie Milliken as his partner. There were others but they mainly played minor roles. In this telemovie, Angie has a briefly shows her bottom as she is being spied from a distance although I would cast doubt as to whether it is her as the scene seems to be staged in a way to suggest it could be a double. There's also a photo that may be something but the quality of the VHS picture makes it impossible to certain. It does look like she could be naked but she is holding a towel or something to cover herself. Possibly...

Angie has a had a number of nude scenes over her career, this listing is her sixth production she has been nude in.

Next up is Suspect where Robert Taylor's character picks up someone at a strip club, has sex and then they are found brutally murdered and he's the main suspect. There's a sex scene early on where we see Shannon McNamara's breast and bottom. Taylor's character then remembers having sex with the victim and we briefly see the top of Shannon's breasts with a hint of her nipples and then some photos of how the victim was found, naked and tied to a bed and we see Shannon's breasts in some of those photos. Shannon has very few credits according to IMDB, only 4 including this telemovie plus another doubtful credit. I doubt she has any further nude scenes in those credits, I've seen the movie Georgia and there's no nudity in that movie, Celia is a mild movie and the other is a kids show.

Up next is Deception and there's a fairly lengthy sex scene featuring Angie Milliken but you don't really see anything more than side-boob and implied nudity although a better quality video might unveil a nipple. I've also included a collage of Angie from throughout The Feds.

There was nothing to cap in the telemovie titled Abduction. 

Seduction was next, this is the only one of the telemovies that I had seen before when I caught a late night replay of it in the late 90s, so I knew that both Angie Milliken and Peta Toppano both showed their breasts during sex scenes. It's a strange scene in context as Angie is actually dreaming both scenes and getting insanely jealous of her partner while becoming miserable that her dream sex isn't happening. Peta has a couple of nude scenes in the second Fields Of Fire mini-series and she shows side-boob whilst in the shower in the opening episode of Return To Eden. Next is Terror, which I'd never seen but I had seen an advertisement for the movie which showed the scene where a woman drops her towel and reveals she's naked. Channel 9 certainly loved showing ads for movies and TV shows where they showed nudity. I have memory of a few of those, mostly obvious ones like Erika Eleniak in Under Siege or Jamie Lee Curtis in Trading Places. They were quite common in the 90s and pretty much only on 9 although I could be wrong there.

It turns out that the actress in that ad was Erika Peril, playing a South African terrorist and there are a number of nude scenes throughout the movie including some full frontal nudity as she plays a horny little terrorist. One scene of note early on shows that she is not wearing any underwear as she lies in bed then rolls over onto a bloke and we see her bottom but what also looks like her genitals. But something is bulging out and also slightly earlier it looks like she was a white patch over her genitals but when turning, it is a darker colour. A good quality video would help sort it out but it's very interesting indeed, particularly for a telemovie shown at 8:30 at night.

   

Erika doesn't have many credits, a guest role on Blue Heelers and Police Rescue, both of which I've checked so nothing there and a role in the Miranda Otto starring Daydream Believer, which I haven't seen but I do have a copy of somewhere. I think the movie is fairly mild though. But while searching for anything from her, I found this even worse quality music video for a single she released, covering Sugar Sugar. In an article about her art, it is suggested that she was satirising pop stars but I'm definitely missed the satire.

Here's the clip but I don't recommend watching it as it's very poor quality and it cuts out before it's supposed to finish.

There was nothing to cap in the telemovie titled Vengeance. And only a brief scene in from Tammy MacIntosh in the next telemovie Betrayal. There's also nothing in the final telemovie Deadfall which begins with a 10+ minute training exercise which suggests that they needed to fill a fair bit.

It's hard to think that there will be a better quality version sometime in the future as there isn't one currently. And it was made by Crawford Productions who are incredibly stingy with releasing their shows and when they do, they're very pricey. Case in point, when Umbrella released entire TV series Spyforce, it cost $70, expensive but fairly reasonable while Crawfords has just released a new version of the exact same thing for $100. Interesting that they released it too as it's not their show so I guess this is a Win TV thing. Anyway, would love to see this in better quality, particularly the Erika Peril scenes.

A Couple Of ABC Anthology Series From The 90s

Some very nice person has made available a couple of ABC anthology series from the 90s, Naked: Stories Of Men and Seven Deadly Sins. There's some surprising quality nudity from the series including from some actresses I never knew had done nude scenes.

It's from VHS tapings off the TV, so the quality is low and I had to play around with the sound just to make it audible. I doubt anything of better quality will be made available, particularly as the ABC have abandoned all but their most popular/noteworthy pre-2010 series.

Naked: Stories Of Men (1996)

A bunch of stories about men/boys, mostly in a crisis of some sort. It has a very austere feel and is written mostly by a bunch of playwrights which really says a lot about the type of series it is.

Linden Wilkinson is briefly nude during a sex scene in this episode. I'm unaware of any other nudity from Linden but she has a fairly expansive filmography that I haven't explored, so who knows.

Veronica Neave in Naked Stories Of Men 3: Blind-Side Breakaway

This is a nice little surprise for me. I quite like seeing Veronica turn up in something, liked her in a guest role on Fire. She still turns up in stuff, mostly in Queensland productions and apparently she is in the new teen girl series Dive Club which looks remarkably like H2O: Just Add Water and has a few bikini scenes from what I've seen. This is her only nude scene as far as I know, very unexpected...

There's also a nude scene featuring Kayla Vain as a stripper in this episode.

Another little surprise. Rachael has a few nude scenes in this Geoffrey Wright (Romper Stomper, Metal Skin, Lover Boy, Macbeth, Cherry Falls) directed episode. Her only nudity as far as I know as she usually plays more respectible characters. Victoria Hill, who has nude scenes in Macbeth also appears in this episode but nothing really to cap from her.

Seven Deadly Sins (1992)

A series based on the seven deadly sins, obviously. Strangely, there was nothing to cap from the Lust episode despite it being very horny.

 

Gia Carides in Seven Deadly Sins part 6: Gluttony

A few years ago, I bought a very poor quality version of this series and just plain forgot about mainly because of the quality but I remembered that Gia Carides had a few nude scenes, far better than anything I'd ever seen her in (save for a photo series in the 90s that I remember seeing where all 3 of the Carides sisters were naked with one of the sisters being pregnant). Gia had a 'nude' scene in Bliss but it is clearly done with prosthetics and she had a couple of sort of nude scenes in the 1997 American thriller LifeBreath.

A far better version of Seven Deadly Sins has been made available, still not great but it'll do. The scene in the final video also had a fairly explicit birthing scene but it's also fake so I edited it out. It was a not bad fake though...

Trailer Time: Possible Nudity in Unreleased Movies

There's a surprising amount of Australian movies that get made but never get released, at least in a proper form. As seen in this update, sometimes they leak out but there's plenty that never see the light of day. Today's update will feature a bunch of movies that I haven't been able to find, some over 20 years old, but have trailers online that show nudity. This list is by no means complete but a starting point.

Bondi Chronicles (2013)

This 2013 movie doesn't seem to have seen the light of day but has an extensive synopsis on IMDB but briefly is apparently about a journalist who infiltrates the world of a media tycoon to get her big break but falls deeply into his world of excess. The movie stars Kaja Trøa, who has a small amount of credits although I do remember her in a few episodes of the failed soap Headland and she plays a nude cam model in the short The New Life (follow link for trailer with nudity from Kaja), which I should cap at some stage. In the trailer for Bondi Chronicles, there's a brief moment where Kaja shows her left breast as she is placed on a bed. There's also a few other shots of random women naked in the trailer. The movie looks a bit low rent, so unless it's gets distributed by the producers, I doubt it will see the light of day.

Elixir (2001)

I was alerted to Elixir back in the mid-2000s when there was probably a hope to still release the movie, the debut feature from writer-director Colm O'Murchu (The Makeover, Dealing With Destiny, Tabernacle 101) but it has never surfaced. Some online details suggest that only a workprint was shown at a few festivals in the early 2000s and the trailer very much looks like a work-in-progress. The movie looks like a corporate thriller of some sort and it has a decent cast of known actors (Rhett Giles, Tiriel Mora, Henri Szeps). It also stars Australian/New Zealand actress Laurie Foell, who has a brief nude scene in the trailer. I think this her only nude scene but I haven't seen a lot of stuff she's been in.

The trailer is from 14 years ago so the size is very small, so I decided to enlarge the pics to get a better sense of what is being shown.

Love Brokers (1998?)

Ah Garnet Mae (Meat Pie, Duran Duran), the fool's gold of filmmakers. Makes a lot of movies, even gets some fairly well known actors/people to be in them, but his passion far outweighs his talent and his movies are always pretty shit. I remember seeing a segment on Weekend Today in the late 90s/early 2000s that actually talked about the making of this movie in an excited way, mainly because it starred Ben Mendelsohn. He seemed excited. Then nothing... There is a trailer online which looks exactly like a Garnet Mae movie and Ben Mendelsohn even appears in it a little bit. But at one point he is poorly dubbed and his name is conspiciously missing from the credits which suggests Mendelsohn has distanced himself from the movie. Malina Hamilton-Smith is the female lead in the movie, she also appeared in Mae's Duran Duran and she briefly shows her breasts in the trailer. There's also a bunch of other sexy stuff in the trailer but I have no idea who's who.

I would say that Love Brokers will never get a release but while I was capping Duran Duran recently there was a recent message which suggested it was going to be released soon but I haven't been able to find it since. Hmm...

Suite For Fleur (2015, filmed 2009)

This movie has been lingering for a while and probably should have been released by now. The maker of the movie is the owner of OzFlix, a site dedicated to showing Australian movies and he promised numerous times that this movie would show up there when it started in early 2017 but still no sign of it on the site and OzFlix has turned into something completely different from where it started with barely any Australian feature movies being put up in the last year or so. Anyway, there's some good nudity in the 'red band' trailer from female lead Jessikah Brown. There's a possibility that other actress have nude scenes in the movie.

So, that's that... except I did some deep searching and come across this long lost promotion that has going to be put up on Ozflix for the movie and wouldn't you know it, there's a bunch of nude scenes featuring Jessikah Brown in it. They're included as videos below the pics from the trailer.

Now for some international movies starring Australian actresses.

The Company You Keep (2003)

Update 5/9/2022 - Collages and videos of Chantelle Barry from The Company You Keep are now available.

This is a 2003 South African thriller obviously made for an American market but never has had a proper release. An old Facebook post from the director (which does seem to be available any more) said that the movie had some cable play but never got a DVD release. Maybe there was hope for a future release in the streaming era, but that seems highly doubtful. Anyway, Australian reality TV pop star Chantelle Barry is cast in her first movie and the trailer shows at least two different nude scenes, showing both her breasts and bottom. As far as I know, this her only nude scenes but I did cap her from another hard-to-find movie The House That Jack Built, where she has a lengthy implied nude scene with some side-boob but nothing like in The Company Your Keep trailer.

Chantelle was also in another movie that has never been released called Punish The Wicked which could be another movie with nude prospects, the poster is very suggestive but any sign of the movie has disappeared.

A Name Without A Place

Update: You can find collages and videos of Charlotte Best from A Name Without A Place available here.

I've tried to avoid more recent movies for this update but it is almost two years since this movie had a meagre cinema release in America and has pretty much disappeared. Charlotte Best stars and while there's no real nudity in the trailer, it could reasonably be suggested that there is nudity in the movie. Here's hoping for a release soon.

Mia Wasikowska in Bergman Island

One quick update to finish, something you may have already seen. There's a couple of brief nude scenes featuring Mia Wasikowska in the trailer of the recent Cannes Film Festival shown Bergman Island. Doubtless this will be released soon enough.
