Update for 31 January...

90s weekend upon us once more. A couple of movies about making movies in Hollywood, both are at bit insufferable for different reasons. The Player has a good plot about a murder but all the starfucking stuff wears thin incredibly quickly. Even the ending that doesn't necessarily give away who's been sending the postcards just adds to the frustration (turns out it's a guy who had one scene in the movie...). The Big Twist is just plain annoying, a wacky 'comedy' about writers trying to write scripts sounds about as awful as it turns out to be.

Superstar may be the worst of the lot, one of those Saturday Night Live movies where they get a somewhat popular character and give them a movie. Worked with Wayne's World and Coneheads but there's also a shitload of misses most forget. This is one of them. I'm baffled as to how this character was funny in the first place as there's nothing in her persona that makes her funny, just an annoying kid who wants to famous and kiss the high school stud. I never saw any of the sketches but there's nothing here to suggest that it could be sustained for barely 80 minutes. Thank fuck SNL gave up this venture; could only imagine how much worse the movies would be from today's generation.

Update for 29 January...

Still going with the New Zealand movies, this time it's 3 movies from the late 90s/early 2000s which I capped back in the pre johnny-moronic.com days in 2004 and have finally gotten around to recapping with videos. Some quick synopses:

Orphans And Angels is a 2003, well, an unconventional noir thriller where Theresa (Emmeline Hawthorne) meets John (Christopher Brown) after she watches her friend Kim (comedian Cal Wilson) mutilate herself on stage while John bets a groom-to-be to drink a pot of hard liquor which he does and promptly dies. They hit it off despite her reticence particularly as she's a rape victim who doesn't like being touched and he starts giving her ecstasy and she starts drifting off in between bouts of mutual masturbation. Meanwhile, John joins up with his drug dealer buddy and starts selling drugs again. Kim is very suspect of John and it turns out he probably killed his ex-girlfriend, also named Theresa and that he may be slowly killing Theresa. After Kim talks to Theresa and tells her about him, she gives her a gun to protect herself and when John finds out, he decides to kill Kim and then up his control of Theresa. Can Theresa get out of John's clutches? Very odd movie, hard to pin down and has some intriguing elements but Theresa is a hard character to get into because she spends most of the movie in a daze and makes the ending of the movie more than a little implausible. But there's enough going on to keep interest, it just doesn't quite hit all the right buttons.

Rain is a 2001 drama seen through the eyes of a 13 year-old girl Janey (Alicia Fulford-Wierzbicki) who watches her family fall apart over summer at their holiday house with her mother (Sarah Peirse) flirting and then having an affair with a local man Cady (Marton Csokas). Janey begins to resent her mother and starts to become insistent on Cady, attempting to get him to take photos of her. Then one day it all comes to a head with a family tragedy. Disturbing drama where the final act is incredibly bleak and the whole movie is hard to watch but the two female leads are very good particularly Fulford-Wierzbicki but the male roles are very weak and depending on your proclivities, the final act might be too much.

What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted? is the 1999 follow-up to Once Were Warriors where Jake The Muss (Temuera Morrison) comes back into his family's life after the death of his son by a gang. His other son wants revenge but Jake tries to get his son out of the gang life but it's going to take everything he's got. A big step down from Once Were Warriors but it's not a bad movie, just not as intense or as complex as the original.

Update for 28 January...

A bunch of New Zealand telemovies in today's update. Piece of My Heart and Safe House are from DVDs and the Lawless telemovies are from Tubi but differing qualities. Lawless was series of former cop turned private investigator telemovies starring Kevin Smith who sadly died on a movie set not long after these movies were made. These movies usually imported an American actor for some reason, probably for overseas sales, so one had C. Thomas Howell (who also turned up in the Australian movie Willfull from the same period) and Jennifer Rubin who had a far bigger role in her movie. Tahei Simpson from the first Lawless telemovie has a nude scene in What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted? which I must dig out.

Update for 27 January...

Another New Zealand movie update, this time even more obscure movie from the 1990s, The Footstep Man.

The Footstep Man is a 1992 drama where a sound technician/foley artist Sam (Steven Grives) is tasked with providing the sound for an arty movie about Toulouse-Lautrec and his lover directed by Vida (Rosey Jones). The movie is a bleak look at their lives but it is starting to affect Sam who takes a liking to one of the characters in the movie, Mirielle (Jennifer Ward-Lealand) and he starts seeing her everything and he just might be cracking up, again. After firing his workmate for incompetence on the insistance of Vida, he takes over the recording of sound for the movie completely becomes obsessed with Mirielle to the point where she starts talking to him and taking over the equipment in the studio, finally telling him to make Vida give the movie a more uplifting ending. She resists this notion but comes around after coming to terms with her own trauma. Baffling inside baseball movie with a whole lot of movie within a movie scenes but the movie is a decent look at the creative movie making process. But it's also a dour look at the process and the characters are hard to warm to as the live in their own world, coupled with movie within the movie characters being actual characters in the main movie making the movie a constant chore to keep abreast with what's going on. It is an interesting look at the creative process but not an easy one to watch.

I struggle to think who the audience for this movie would've been back in the day let alone now. So much so that the movie has never been released on DVD in New Zealand and it's only been released on DVD in the Netherlands, which is where I got this from a few years ago and promptly forgot about until now. A fair bit of nudity in the movie, all of Jennifer's scenes come from the movie within the movie, which also seems to have a fair bit of nudity, which is joked about when one of the technicians takes a pervy look at one sex scene.

I've also included a quick scene from a 1990 short film also starring Jennifer Ward-Lealand called Linda's Body, a quirkly comedy about a woman who has an out-of-body experience after her partner whistles a certain song which causes her body to become comatose and the woman to enter the afterlife where she meets an old boyfriend who made the song. Not a bad little short either.

Update for 26 January...

Had a request to do some New Zealand movies and here's a couple from the 70s/80s.

Sleeping Dogs is a 1977 thriller where during an uprising against the government, Smith (Sam Neill) up and leaves his family for some solitude on a remote island. After a massacre orchestrated by the Prime Minister and his head of police, New Zealand turns fascist, not that Smith cares until he asks to by a gun from a local, only for things to get weird and the special police ending up on the island to arrest him. Turns out he's been framed up and he is told to confess on live TV and he'll be given asylum overseas but on the way to the TV studio, Smith escapes. He ends up in Rotorua hiding out a motel which is then overrun by American soldiers led by Colonel Willoughby (Warren Oates) who use it as a base. Meanwhile, Smith's past catches up with him when Bullen (Ian Mune), who shacked up with Smith's wife Gloria (Nevan Rowe) arrives having joined the resistance and wants Smith to help him in an ambush of the American soldiers. Smith is having nothing of it as he never wanted anything to do with the revolution and hates Bullen but when the woman that help him find refuge is found dead, Smith reluctantly helps and the soldiers are massacred by the Bullen-led revolutionaries. Smith goes back on the run with Bullen and even spends time with Gloria before they go back to where Smith was to join forces with a group of revolutionaries but by this time, Smith is the most wanted man in the country and everyone is after him. Very good thriller about a man forced kicking and screaming into something he wanted nothing to do with only for it to define him. Sam Neill's and director Roger Donaldson's first film and both show a lot of talent, particularly Neill, who's effortlessly a leading man even this early in his career. Some of the plot is a bit hokey but the conspiracy angle is laid on thick and is absorbing for the most part, even when it settles down for a long stretch climbing a mountain towards the end of the movie. A pretty solid early New Zealand movie, some say the first New Zealand movie ever made but I think there was at least one made in the 1940s.

Pallet On The Floor is a 1984 crime drama where local factory worker Sam (Peter McCauley) gets married to a Maori woman (Jillian O'Brien), who is pregnant with his child, much to the chagrin of her former lover Jack (John Bach) who harrasses her at the wedding. Also at the wedding are Sam's best pals Basil (Bruce Spence) and O'Keefe (Terence Cooper) but O'Keefe has a seizure at the wedding and dies. After a night at the pub, Sam is convinced by the local bartender Miriam (Shirley Gruar) who has a thing for him that the baby isn't his. Sam and Sue get into an argument but make up the next morning. The next night things get tense as Miriam makes a drunken move on Sam and Jack comes to Sue who is all alone at home and attempts to rape her but she escapes to the street just as Basil and friends are walking past and in the ensuing brawl, Jack is killed. Basil, Sam and co. attempt to cover up what happened instead of calling the police about an accidental death of a wannabe rapist and it goes badly, discovered by a local cop who tells them to take the so-called drunk Jack to hospital with him driving behind them. But instead they go ahead with their plan to drive his car onto the train tracks for a train to hit it, which it does. Problem solved, well of course not. Word is spread fast that Jack was murdered and local head cop Larkman (Tony Barry) is on Sam and Cecil's back looking to take them down. But what happens next is not forseen by anyone. OK low key crime drama that probably would've played better as a black comedy because it teeters on the edge of being one for the longest time without ever becoming one. Particularly after Jack is killed and the farcical proceedings in the cover up of the death but it's played straight down the line the entire time. And it's full of that bleakness that can only come from New Zealand.

Was able to find the Bluray of Sleeping Dogs, so no problems with the quality there but Pallet On The Floor is incredibly obscure but it turned up on Tubi which a whole bunch of New Zealand movies from the 80s have. But it's basically a low quality DVD, so it's better than VHS but not by much. It's fine but during any fast moving scenes, it struggles but I guess it's the best that we'll get unless this almost forgotten movie gets remastered.

Update for 24 January...

90s update is all about From Dusk Till Dawn in today's update.

Saw From Dusk Till Dawn in cinemas back in the day, in fact I think it was the first R18+ rated movie I was legally allowed in to see from memory although I thought for a while it was Trainspotting but that was released 1 month later FDTD. Still a bizarre movie that changes genre halfway through which is quite jolting but it works and is a pretty fun movie.

Hadn't seen the straight-to-video South African made From Dusk Till Dawn sequels before, never felt the need as I thought they'd be dog shit and well, they are and they aren't. Both movies basically take off the original plot wise. Texas Blood Money decided to have the vampires in the middle of a heist with only a brief sighting of the Titty Twister strip club, to its detriment. The Hangman's Daughter takes place 100 years prior and the plot is almost beat for beat the same as the original. Criminal escapes hanging, goes on crime spree, comes across religious people and they all end up at Titty Twister where everything goes to shit and Danny Trejo is behind the bar. Geez, what must it be like being a bartender for 100 years... Anyway, there's the addition of an actually person of history in The Hangman's Daughter. Writer Ambrose Bierce, played by Michael Parks, was an actual writer who got shot by Pancho Villa, which is referenced in the movie and then he disappeared off the face of the Earth. Apparently he turned up at the Titty Twister which fills in a few holes in his story. While the third movie copies the chaos of the original, it doesn't have its flair although Sonia Braga is giving it her all and the movie isn't too bad as a From Dusk Till Dawn knock-off.

Texas Blood Money on the other hand is a fairly boring movie, where the characters become vampires and then commit a robbery where more of the crew become vampires and then they attack both Mexican and American law enforcement who come to stop the robbery. Robert Patrick plays criminal involved in the robbery who has to fight with the cops when his team becomes vampires. Not as much fun and a lot of waiting before the big action horror set piece. Definitely the lesser of the From Dusk Till Dawn franchise.

Update for 23 January...

Another redux featuring Ana Claudia Talancón, this time in the Mexican movie Arráncame La Vida. Had this rip for a while and sadly there's a scene where they (whoever they are) blurred out the pubic hair. Had a look around and it looks like it's the only Bluray/HD version around, apparently from Taiwan as that's the only country it's been released on Bluray. I was going to junk it but it's only affects 10 seconds of one video so I've kept the old 720p version I capped off TV back in the day. Otherwise, the update is fine but I'll be on the lookout for an unblured version. Although I have my doubts about one coming up.

Australian Classics for 20 January...

Back to the Australian Classics. Recapping the movie Blacktown, which I first capped in 2007. Basically a low budget kitchen sink drama about an Indigenous man who decides to ask out an emotionally unavailable woman (Nikki Owen) after he saves her from a date that ends in a bad way. Her problems with men make it hard to connect with the man but he is persistent and a nice guy who puts all his flaws out on the table for her to see and slowly but surely she comes around to him. Cheap looking movie with some serious technical issues but it's made by one of the most prolific directors in Australia, Kriv Stenders, before he went mainstream and it's actually a pretty likeable movie and the male lead Tony Ryan is very charismatic. Not for everyone but if you like low budget almost mumblecore dramas, this one is pretty good.

Well, if Blacktown isn't obscure enough for you, how 'bout a movie not even listed on IMDB? Duran Duran is a 1998 sci-fi drama from the director of possibly the worst Australian movie ever made Meat Pie, set in 2037 where the world was taken over by women and the remaining men just skateboard and play videos games (oh good, not much change then...). Anyway Rittyay (writer/director Garnet Mae) and his friend Measles (Jade Gatt of Cheez TV), skateboard away the days with his drug dealer cousin Wiff (Ben Oxenbould) and his friend Drongo (Rob Carlton) hoping to get laid but women aren't interested in men anymore. One day, an all girl group take over their skate ramp, lead by Bum Fluff (Rebekah Elmaloglou) who beat up Wiff. Later, they meet up at a dance party and Rittyay and Bum Fluff hit it off and over time they fall for one another but Bum Fluff is being 'initiated' in a week, something about going to a higher plane. The wile down the days skating and snowboarding and when Bum Fluff finally gets horny for Rittyay, he goes missing and she ends up sleeping with Wiff. Also, it turns out that Rittyay (and his cousin Wiff) is a hermaphrodite and might be able to join Bum Fluff in being initiated.

Amateurish movie, barely a feature at 52 minutes but at least it's short which is to it's advantage because the plot holds together just long enough that anything else would be padding. Some of the actors, including well known ones are overdubbed, thankfully Rebekah Elmaloglou keeps her voice and is enthusiastic participant in the movie, well save for the sex scene below although thinking about it further that might be what the scene was going for. There's a fairly well known cast for a movie made for barely anything and apparently they were getting paid after it got released, which it never did until it turned up on YouTube. Whoops! While the movie is very poor and plot is remarkably silly, at least it has a drive that is seriously lacking in Meat Pie and it riffs off Barbarella (see title) which isn't the worst thing. Duran Duran is in no way a good movie but it tries hard, it's writer/director has passion but lacks skills and money and it shows big time.

Well, I sat on Duran Duran for a while, I don't know why but I was looking through my hard drives and come across it, so finally got around to capping it. It features possibly the only onscreen nudity from Rebekah Elmaloglou, completely unexpected, so that's one bonus to this movie. Also just a quick look around suggests that maybe another film the director made around the same time, Love's Brokers, is possibly getting a release of some sort soon although I wouldn't count on it. This was a movie where the makers somehow got Ben Mendelsohn for the lead but then suspiciously his name disappeared from the movie despite the trailer showing a few shots of him. There's also a bit of nudity in the trailer, so who knows, maybe it'll get released. Probably not.

Update for 18 January...

90s weekend continues.

Nattevagten was remade as Nightwatch in 1997 and I swear I'd seen the original but everything I remember is from the remake. Didn't realise that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game Of Thrones was the lead in what looks like his first movie with Sofie Gråbøl, who I remember from a few movies from the 90s, a couple I capped off SBS back in the VHS days and she's still going strong, recently turning up as the prosecutor in The Undoing. The movie is a pretty solid idea and has a few tense moments before going overboard in the finale but it isn't really a surprise it got remade and directed by the same director.

Update for 17 January...

Guess it's the 90s weekend once again. A couple of movies starring Robin Wright and some others.

Irma Vep is an arty French drama from director Olivier Assayas about a once revered director who decides to remake famous silent feature Les Vampires with Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung and everything is going wrong. By the time Maggie arrives, they are already 3 days behind schedule and over budget. The director is slowly losing his mind and what he's shot sucks, so everything is going to shit fast. Also a bunch of other stuff happens. Basically a satire of French movies that are made on the public purse made by formerly revered directors that goes off into different directions including Maggie Cheung being a cat burglar for some reason stealing from Arsinée Khanjian in a baffling cameo. There's a hint of a girl crush on Maggie from the production designer but that goes nowhere. I honestly got no idea where the movie is going but there's enough interesting stuff going on to make it at least watchable even if the movie just sort of ends. Also the movie is very similar to a later Assayas film, Clouds of Sils Maria, at least plot wise, so if you liked that movie, you'd probably like Irma Vep too.

Update for 14 January...

A new-ish Australian feature in today's update with another bunch of short films from the last couple of years.

Thicker Than Water is a heavy melodrama about a woman (Ellie Popov) who attempts to keep her family together after the arrival back in town of her formerly drug addicted brother which sets off a chain of events that will end in tragedy. Not a bad little low budget movie that packs an absolute shitload of drama into 70 minutes of movie. While there's a few issues, most of the male roles are under written and some of the drama is a bit ridiculous but the movie never stops trying.

Also another bunch of short films, again not really well-known actresses although Hannah Fredericksen has appeared in a few TV shows including Wake In Fright. Jacqui Purvis had an ongoing role on Neighbours a year or so again playing the lover to April Rose Pengilly's character. And I recently capped Georgia Scott in Skinford: Chapter Two where she had a couple of nude scenes.

Update for 13 January...

Haven't really delved deep into Australian short films and I've been through a whole bunch recently, so it's time to cap more than a few. But you have to go through a whole bunch just to get a short film worth capping, the ratio is at least 1 to 10, so it takes a long time to just get to here.

Not too many known actresses in this update. Anna McGahan is probably the best known, mainly for her break out work in Underbelly: Razor but it's highly doubtful we'll ever get any further nude scenes from now on as she's found religion big time. There's a whole heap of videos on Youtube of her talking about her conversion and other religious related stuff. Ah well, whatever makes you happy... Meg Fraser has one of the main roles in a new horror release called Bloody Hell which recently played in local cinemas, so might be seeing more of her in the near future.

Update for 10 January...

90s weekend update.

Hired To Kill is a 1990 action thriller where Night Slasher from Cobra (Brian Thompson) is tasked by George Kennedy to gather a group of female warriors to infiltrate some South American dictatorship and kill a jailed political leader so that America can feel good. Not much more than that plus a whole heap of racism, sexism and homophobia, basically all character traits of Brian Thompson's character. And having an all girl warrior group smells of another dog shit Andy Sidaris movie. I was all ready to hate but slowly the movie stopped going down the wrong path and became a more watchable if mostly predictable action movie. Thompson even leans into his fake gay fashion designer role and gives Oliver Reed and big ol' smooch and this movie just never looks back. It's silly and utterly predictable, even down to the 'twist' ending save for a major character copping it quite early in the movie and the action is not bad. Reed makes a decent villain with his twirly moustache and the girls kick some arse. A not bad B action movie that could've been a lot worse.

Australian Classics for 7 January...

A couple more recent Australian Classics plus a couple of short films which I really should cap more of. Some quick synopses:

Project Eden Volume 1 is a 2017 conspiracy thriller where a woman who lost her husband in the war gives birth to their child who is born catatonic. At age 5, the government suggests that her son should be euthanised but the woman doesn't want this. Then a man comes to her and tells her that he was in the same situation and that he can help her get her son back but the FBI is on his and now her tail so they go on the run trying to get her son back. Wild conspiracies abound in this thriller that is prescient to current conspiracy trends but goes round in circles and ends in a most ridiculous way so that a sequel can be set up. It's a fairly watchable movie but it's not without issues and there's an extraordinary amount of exposition in the final act, so good luck trying to understand it.

House Of Cards is a 2013 Netflix political thriller where a woman is killed in a forest and a symbol is found nearby by a drunk and disgraced journalist who thinks it's his next big story. Turns out it's a symbol of a secret society of warriors who are being killed one-by-one by a woman in a mask who is breaking with tradition to make her tribe the only one. The journalist is directed towards one of the members of the secret society who is their best fighter, who is reluctant to let out trade secrets until his secret society starts getting very thin. Also the journalist's girlfriend is a wannabe member of the secret society and she's murdered by the boss so the journalist and fighter work together to find out who is killing the members of the secret society. Or something... Silly movie that stagnates for an incredible period of time and then balloons out to over and an hour and three quarters which is way too long. The plot is constantly confused, then the fighter has an affair with the killer as soon as they see one another and I think I lost consciousness at this point. And for a movie that promises martial arts there's very little of it and the final fight is incredibly disappointing as there's a need to set up a sequel that hasn't happened yet. And the journalist always turns up at the right place and the right time except for when his girlfriend is murdered, which is unfortunate for her. This gets a bit ridiculous by the end. Sure it's low budget but that's no excuse for a bloated and silly plot.

Now the short films: Flow is a 40 minute drama about a couple who's marriage has hit a brick wall and it's about to get worse when the wife finds out that her husband has been seeing a sex worker but it's not quite what it seems. Bird Of Paradise is a drama about a young man who lives in a motel who takes a shine to a woman staying there and she humours him, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend who becomes violent towards him.

Australian Classics for 6 January...

Time for some Australian Classics. Some quick synopses:

The Coolangatta Gold is a 1984 sports drama where one brother is a freewheeling bloke who is looking to branch out while his brother is his father's favourite who is training him for the surf lifesaving championship known as The Coolangatta Gold. Extreme tension develops between freewheeler and his resentful father until he decides to enter the race himself and prove he's as good as his brother. Also, he falls in love with a ballet dancer (Josephine Smulders, an actual ballet dancer in her only movie). Truly bizarre movie which has all the usual sport clichés and then amplifies them to extreme levels mainly thanks to a ridiculously over-the-top performance of Nick Tate as the boy's father who hates one of his son's and basically ignores his wife. Probably an accurate portraying of an overbearing sports father but it's so extreme it becomes laughable. Otherwise it's a pretty stock-standard sports movie, predictable even to the final seconds. Also check out the dance sex scene below which fits perfectly to the ridiculousness of the movie.

I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer is a 2009 horror comedy where a killer dressed as a cricketer returns to Australia to pick off the members of his school cricket team who bullied him mercilessly. In an idea so dumb it can only happen in a horror movie, the remaining members of the team are brought together to be protected in a remote country house by the investigating detectives including a woman from Scotland Yard. Well, wouldn't you know it, the killer finds them and uses weapons made from cricket equipment to slaughter the remaining members of the team one-by-one. For a movie that has an perfectly fine silly concept and a decent parody name, the movie is surprisingly devoid of comedy unless you consider oft-used sexist and gay jokes as the height of comedy. I think the makers thought that their idea was silly enough that people would just find the movie funny because of that but you need jokes or even funny deaths, none of which happens. And the horror side of things is by-the-number boredom, everyone is told to stay in the house but then they just leave one-by-one and no-one seems to notice or care when they go missing until they bother to do a head count. Should've been way funnier than this disappointment. It does have a lengthy body double scene that feels like it should've been played for laughs and then nothing but lengthy washing of body. Where's the jokes?

Get Rich Quick is a 2004 comedy thriller where a struggling artist, a deadbeat gambler art dealer, an avant garde artist who's really a drug dealer, a junkie, another junkie who's just been released from prison, a sports star turned gangster and a gang of thieves all enter each other's path all related to wanting to get money quickly. It all culminates in a bank in Byron Bay. And it makes very little sense, if any. When Australian movies imitated Tarantino, it usually ended badly and by the time of this movie's release it was at least 5 years too late for that craze. I still have no idea why the main character, the struggling artist is in jail, you don't know this until the final minutes and you never know exactly why, you could make a reasonable guess but it still would make no sense. Then there's just baffling moments like the man just out of jail who decides to get rich quick by faking a funny video from Australia's Funniest Home Video show and ends up killing the bloke who's been made a fool and then just buries him at the beach (!). There's a surprisingly decent Australian cast for this low budget movie with a whole bunch of actors who are fairly well known like Jason Clarke, Anthony Hayes, Ben Oxenbould, Marshall Napier, Malcolm Kennard amongst others which suggests that this movie should've got some sort of release in Australia but it never has and the DVD I capped this from is a terrible US DVD.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia from Get Rich Quick which explains why the scene ends with a cartoon man shooting up the place, another baffling feature of the movie.

Update for 4 January...

Undertow is a psychological thriller where Claire (Laura Gordon) has a miscarriage but can't get in contact with her husband Dan (Rob Collins). He is partying with his football club friends while also at the party is a young woman Angie (Olivia DeJonge). Months later, Claire and Dan try to move on, going to meetings for bereaved parents and Claire is back at her job as a photographer. On the way to a job, Claire spots Dan at a motel and calls him to say hello but he says he's busy and then she sees Angie gets out of his car. Claire decides to keep it secret and back at home she gets a knock at the door from Dan's friend and former football star Brett (Josh Helman) but she decides not to answer it. Claire gets bad news at the gynecologist who says she probably won't be able to become pregnant again. Claire finds Dan at the motel again and when he leaves, she goes and takes a look at Angie, following her to a nearby hotel but she is conspicuous and Angie catches her watching her and Angie mistakes her for a talent scout. Claire tells her she a photographer but decides to leave but not before Angie gives out her phone number.

Claire decides to photograph Angie and meets her at an improvised skate park and they get to talking. Claire finds out Angie is 19 and also that she is pregnant which sets off Claire who runs off. She decides to leave Dan believing that it is his child, but he tells her that Angie is Brett's former girlfriend who broke it off when he found out she was 16 and that Dan in his role as football club mediator is attempting to help Angie. Brett meets up with Angie and they have sex. Dan goes to work but Claire follows him and he ends up at the motel again, this time Claire takes photos and sends them to the media to expose Brett but she regrets it when it becomes front page news. Brett comes to their house in the middle of the night in a panic and shows Dan a video on his phone but when Claire asks him about it, Dan ignores her. Claire checks Brett's phone when he is distracted but doesn't have enough time to see anything. The next morning, Brett is still in the house and Claire asks him about Angie's baby but he tells her to ask Dan about it. Claire finds a photo of Dan partying with Angie on her Facebook page and this sets her off and she decides to go drinking but then decides to find Angie, who's drinking at a discotheque and Claire decides to drag her back to the motel. Angie admits that she had a fight at the party and something bad happened but Angie falls asleep before she can say anything further and Claire decides to stay with her.

The next day, Claire takes Angie to the doctor to get an ultrasound and everything is fine but a callous joke from the doctor makes Angie runs away. She gets back to the motel and finds someone has spray-painted 'Slut' on the window. Claire pins Angie's ultrasound photo on her pinboard with an ever increasing number of photos of Angie. She then has a dream in the bath about a naked and pregnant Angie and begins masturbating only to find that she was dreaming. The next morning, Claire goes to the motel but Angie has gone and left the door wide open. She arrives late to meeting for bereaved parents and while there has a strong reaction. Claire goes home and finds Angie in her home office where Angie finds her pinboard full of photos and she takes her ultrasound photo, but Claire fights her and strangles her but Angie leaves. Claire goes to the football club fundraiser in a state and Dan is worried about her, not helped when she starts drinking. During the fundraiser, Angie arrives semi-naked and calling for 'Respect' in front of the media. Claire tries to talk to her but Dan wards her off before dragging Angie away. Claire goes off with a drugged-up Brett. Angie tells Dan that Claire is stalking her and she thinks she's in love with her. She runs away when Dan stops the car. Claire has sex with Brett at the beach and also takes drugs with him. Angie hitchhikes out of town.

In the morning at the beach, Claire sees who she thinks is Angie who goes walking into the sea. Claire follows her and becomes overwhelmed in the water. Brett tries to save Claire but goes missing in the process while Claire manages to scramble back to shore. Dan takes her home. Brett is not found until the next morning but Claire is only worried about Angie who only Claire thinks went into the water. She drives off to the beach and finds Angie there mourning Brett. Angie knows Claire has sex with Brett. Claire tells her that she only wanted to look after her and the baby and in the commotion, ends up hitting Angie. Angie tells her that at the party, Brett let his friends have sex with her, filmed it and then he dumped her. Angie walks into the sea but she is bleeding. Claire rushes her to hospital but she has a miscarriage. Claire finds Brett's phone with the video he was showing Dan which turns out to be Brett's friends having sex with a drunken Angie. Claire confronts Dan with the video, Dan has trouble explaining himself but admits that he didn't care. Months later, Claire gets an ultrasound, assumedly Brett's baby. While getting petrol, Claire sees Angie in a school uniform boarding bus.

Utterly depressing psychological thriller about a woman struggling to cope with the loss of her baby at the very worst time of her life and her way to deal with it is to ingratiate herself onto a lost soul in similar circumstances. Angie's story is based loosely on a real life incident with a football club, which was previously used in the 2013 movie Blinder which also stars Josh Helman in the exact same role he plays in this movie, talk about typecast. But where Blinder was a surface level movie more interested in the how it plays out in the club and local town, Undertow is more interested in how Claire uses Angie in an attempt to get over her demons. Laura Gordon does some fantastic work driving the movie, an underrated actress who is very good in heavy drama and she is well cast. DeJonge and Collins don't have much to do apart from react to the increasingly unstable Claire but of the two, DeJonge gets more to do thanks to Claire's growing obsession with her. The movie is heavy going and gets darker the longer it goes with no let up with the movie ending badly for everyone but Claire who has her only bit of good news in the final scenes. A solid story driven by an excellent lead performance are Undertow's strengths but don't expect an easy ride.

While the rip of the movie is fine, it's not high quality and it's very dark so hopefully a better quality rip becomes available but considering that it's a fairly obscure movie, I have my doubts about that.

Update for 3 January...

A grab bag of stuff for today's 90s update.

Never seen Pentathlon before but I was always intrigued to see how this movie could be a Dolph Lundgren action thriller and it turns out it's not really. Basically, Dolph plays an East German athlete who refuses to blood dope and wins the gold medal in Seoul but has a falling out with his strict coach (David Soul) and kinda like an American athlete (Renée Coleman), so he hatches a play to defect to the US, which he does. Anyway, his coach kills his father and when the Berlin Wall comes down months later, Dolph loses it and tries to reconcile with the fact that if he waited a few months to defect he might've saved his dad. Cue 3 years later, Dolph is working a low paying job at a diner and is drunk most of the time and has lost everything including his drive. Meanwhile, his coach become the head of a German neo-Nazi group and manages to escape to America after they are raided. Dolph slowly gets his mojo back and starts training for Barcelona and that's when his coach spots an article in the paper about Dolph and he decides to get his revenge on Dolph by inadvertently involving him in his terrorist act. It's a far different movie than I was expecting, a solid comeback storyline mixed with a silly Nazi plot but not a bad movie all the same. It does have the hokiest ending ever when they restage the Barcelona Olympics in your local running track to 20 people and David Soul just casually walks on the track with a gun to shoot Dolph. It's laugh out loud bad and completely unnecessary but when you spend the entire movie letting David Soul escape certain capture numerous times by fading to the next scene, it was only going to ending as awfully as this. A shame because the Seoul Olympic scene actually looked sorta plausible, well as much as anyone gives a shit about the Modern Pentathlon.

Hah, if my memory serves me, the Seoul Olympics was when Australian modern pentathlete Alex Watson got caught with an extreme amount of caffeine in his blood he blamed on having 80 cups of coffee the previous day. Wonder if Dolph's character knew him...

Milk Money has a baffling plot synopsis that is even more bizarre when you see it played out. There's no way this movie gets made today but I'm struggling to think how it even got made in 1993. Just a baffling movie about a bunch of young boys who hatch a plan to get enough money to go to the big city and see some boobs. Well they do when hooker with a heart of gold Melanie Griffith takes their $100 in change and then decides to drive them home when they are stuck in the rain. The plot, already nonsensical then becomes even more nonsensical with every development until it's treacly nonsense ending where everything fits so perfectly and now the kid who went to the city to see a woman's boobs and sort of does now has that woman as his new mum. I'm done, I'm spent, this movie doesn't even pass as fantasy, it turned out to be way sillier than the plot synopsis suggested and I didn't think it was possible. And the movie plays out as if it's a cute but slightly raunchy family movie. How is that even possible?

Update for 1 January...

In Corpore is an Australian movie made in 4 countries telling 4 different stories of love.

In Melbourne, Julia (Clara Francesca Pagone) arrives back home from New York to visit friends and family but she is struggling to gather up the strength to tell her parents that she is now married to a much older New York art critic after visiting Las Vegas. Julia and her parents are joined by her best friend Henri (Frank Fazio) and she tells them she married and it goes as badly as she expected. Julia sulks in her bed, joined by Henri who helps her through it, so much so that they have sex in the morning.

In Malta, Anna (Naomi Said) and Manny (Chris Dingli) are a married couple trying for a baby but it's not going well. Anna tells her Nina (Simone Alamango) that she is not interested in the job Nina suggested for her and also not ready to have a baby. Anna continues to have sex with Manny but he finds out that she is still taking the pill and they get into a massive argument.

In Berlin, Milana (Kelsey Gillis) and Rosalie (Sarah Timm) are a loved up couple but with lingering underlying issues that are about to come to the fore. Rosalie does not like Milana's job as a web cam model and this is not helped when one of her regular customers, Luca, keeps calling and texting her and now is coming to Berlin to spend a week with Milana and pay her a lot of money for the pleasure. Rosalie reluctantly lets her do it but absolutely does not want this to happen because she thinks Milana will leave her. Rosalie reacts to this by forcing herself onto Milana in a way that goes further than rough sex and into violence.

In New York, Julia is back with her husband Patrick (Timothy McCown Reynolds) and she tells him that she slept with her friend Henri. Despite being in an open relationship, this hits Patrick like a punch in the gut and struggles to get his head around it. Julia is about to have her first ever art show at Patrick's gallery and Patrick becomes snarky towards Julia, causing friction in their relationship. This is not helped when her friend Zara (Amelia Hunter) joins her in New York to see her exhibition and she doesn't like Julia's choices.

OK drama with some solid stories if limited in scope that are punctuated with some surprisingly intense sex scenes which become the main focus of at least two stories. The lesbian story is probably the most rounded story and has the most intense sex scenes, one erupting in violence which helped bring a realness to the story. Both actresses do a good job conveying a relationship teetering on the edge. Julia's stories are the least interesting, mainly focusing on her reluctance to tell people about her marriage where she seems to spend a lot of time trying to convince herself that she has made the right decision not by how it effects her but how it effect other people. The dramatic tension in these stories is probably helped by having none of these stories resolved but it does leave each story at a crucial point where a resolution might be helpful. Having said that, In Corpore is a not bad relationship drama with strong acting from it's four female leads and relatable stories that are told in an interesting way.

Also included in this update is the short film Daughter from the same filmmakers, about three women who cross paths over one night that will end tragically for one of them. You can see some early remnants of In Corpore in the movie plus one of the leads is played by Katherine Langford, now a fairly well-known actress. Also former Heartbreak High star Aisha (Tara) Jakszewicz plays one of the women. Personally, I'm a big fan of her excellent nude scene from 15 Amore, so it's good to see her back acting again.

Well, it's apparently a new year with 2021 actually being the 20th year of this site in it's various forms. Recently, the place where it all began on Yahoo! Groups in December 2001 was shut down, honestly I can't believe it had still being going for as long as it had. Anyway, Johnny Moronic Capturing has grown from there, recently clocking up capturing over 4000 movies and 500 TV shows although that seems lower than other sites. But that was never the goal of the site, it was to capture a whole lot of stuff that wasn't been done and that's what I'll continue to do. Currently up to 660 Australian movies capped plus 170 more that don't have anything to cap and plenty more to come. I've still got a whole bunch of movies only available on VHS I eventually get around to watching/capping. And I'm coming up fast to 900 movies from the 1990s, which is now a major part of the site.

Gotta admit 2021 was a pretty damn good year for nudity in TV and movies considering a whole bunch got delayed or abandoned.
