Australian/New Zealand movies: 1989

A significant drop-off in the number of movies made/released in 1989 so that means less movies that had something to cap in them. Like 1988, there's no movies that have extensive nudity but the year does feature movies like Houseboat Horror, Sweetie and Afraid To Dance which all have fairly decent nudity. Also a few movies which are very obscure including one, Closer and Closer Apart, that is impossible to find.

1989

Arguing the Toss of a Cat

No idea what this movie is about as it's pretty much unavailable now so all I know is that it's 50 minutes long and stars singer Kate Ceberano in her first acting role. Thanks to Ozmovies there's a few pics from the short movie that show a couple of sexy scenes with Kate.

Afraid to Dance

Drama about two unnamed characters that cross paths in their meandering lives. The Man (Nique Needles) is a petty crim who is going nowhere. After being left in the middle-of-nowhere when an attempt to steal from a woman fails, The Man walks to the nearest town and attempts to steal a car but The Woman (Rosey Jones) arrives back after doing some light shoplifting and reluctantly gives him a lift. They sort of hit it off but she wants him gone. Instead he hangs around and they end up breaking into a house where they watch a video made by a man living at the house, then The Man takes The Woman's virginity. He then dies the next day during a police chase. Oh and she becomes pregnant. That's it for the movie, barely any plot just a meandering movie with nothing interesting happening and no character worth following. A complete miss.

There is a lengthy nude scene from Rosey Jones where we see full frontal nudity and also her bottom briefly. At least there's one thing worth watching in this movie.

You can find a synopsis with collages and VHS videos from Afraid To Dance here. A preview is below.

Becca
aka Derfydd Aur / Realms of Gold

(With thanks to Topless Review) ABC telemovie that's a Welsh co-production set in the late 1800s about couple in Wales, Becca (Beth Robert) and Dai (Dafydd Hywel) who become a part of a Welsh revolutionary group called the Daughters of Becca who are sick of the English laws that are being imposed on them. They join after Dai's mother dies and their landlord wants to kick them out, Well, Dai gets arrested and found guilty then sent to Tasmania for hard labour, meaning he is separated from Becca. Dai's preacher brother Gwilym (Dafydd Emyr) helps Becca out while Dai is treated harshly until he becomes friendly with one of the troopers Matt (Gary Sweet) and helps him after Matt is spied having an affair with the boss' wife. Dai and Matt escape together to the Victorian goldfields while Becca and Gwilym become closer and eventually decide to come to Australia to find Dai. By the time they arrive in Australia, Becca and Gwilym have fallen for each other. They eventually find Dai but it might be too late. OK drama that is mostly predictable, particularly where the Becca and Gwilym relationship goes and then the ending. There's probably a 50/50 mix of English and Welsh with a fair chunk of the movie set in Wales.

Sort of nudity from Welsh actress Beth Robert who shows the side of the breast in a couple of scenes while she's in a wet see-through blouse in another. There's also another scene where Australian actress Polly Croke is briefly naked but you don't really see anything and it's very much implied.

Cappuccino

Comedy about the trials and tribulations of being an actor that is desperately trying to get a role. The main focus is around Max (John Clayton) who drives a taxi most of the time while trying to do stand-up comedy at night. He has a new girlfriend in the much younger Celia (Cristina Parker) who seems to sleep her way through actors in better positions. He also has coffee with other actor friends like Larry (Barry Quin) who has a role in a long running soapie until he is sacked and he becomes incredibly depressed. Then there's Anna (Rowena Wallace) who's more of a stage actress that is obsessed with her reviews. Finally there's Maggie (Jeanie Drynan), Max's ex-wife who is struggling to get a role as she hits middle-age. A whole lot of navel-gazing in this movie that at times feels more like a docudrama, particularly when Max speaks directly to the camera. Intermittently funny but nothing that hasn't been seen before in every other movie of it's type.

Cristina Parker shows her breasts in one scene plus there's other sexy stuff throughout as she portrays a bit of a starfucker. This is her only movie.

Closer and Closer Apart

Now for the completely obscure, so much so I don't have any materials for it. But I do remember seeing a collage made in the early 2000s that showed Marie-Louise Walker showing her breasts. I can't remember the capper, but it would have to be an early Australian because the movie was only ever released in Australia and even then in a very limited capacity.

I once saw a VHS copy of the movie selling for $90 on EBay which is way too rich for me and after a year of listing, it disappeared probably never selling. Anyway, there's probably no chance of this movie ever seeing the light of day but maybe the collage that was made might. I must've saved it somewhere but that could be over 20 years ago. I should check these old hard drives that have been untouched for over decade.

Who knows? All I know is that I saw this collage that doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

(Updated 11.6) As mentioned in the original update, I remembered seeing a collage from this movie but thought it was lost. But Scoopy has found the original Oz collage from Closer and Closer Apart that shows that Mary-Louise shows her breasts in at least two scenes.

Come and Get It

Comedy thriller from the same people that made the terrible erotic movies Leonora/Coming of Age but this time without the erotic element. Doc (Ron Becks) is an American veteran who's friend, 'nightclub' owner John is killed in Australia by rival Pirate (David Evans) who wants all the clubs in Kings Cross. Doc is bequeathed John's nightclub including all the girls that work there but he is wildly out-of-his-depth. He has someone helpful in Kit (Amanda Hiles) around but she has her own eye on running the club. She and the other girls also want revenge for John's death and Pirate is a lingering threat so Doc and the girls have to stop Pirate and his goons from violently taking over the club. Then John turns up very much alive... Silly movie that does have a few laughs along the way but the movie goes off on weird tangents frequently and the final twist is so bizarre it's very hard to describe without seeing it. At times the movie is barely comprehensible but that still makes it far more watchable than Leonora and Fantasy.

Brief nudity from Angela Menzies-Wills (in her final movie after a solid run of nudity starting from the late 70s and all through 1980s) and Tanya Ross.

Dead Calm

Superb thriller from director Phillip Noyce where a married couple Rae (Nicole Kidman) and John (Sam Neill) take a lengthy holiday on the seas to get over the recent death of their child. After seeing no-one for weeks, a boat that looks abandoned appears except they spot a man Hughie (Billy Zane) rowing furiously towards them as if he is escaping something. As Hughie rests, John checks out his boat which Hughie takes advantage of and he takes over the control of the their boat and takes Rae hostage while John is left on the leaky boat. As Rae tries to deal with this new arrangement, John desperately tries to get back to his boat. A solidly suspenseful thriller with three decent leads acting their arses off. Still holds up very well after all this time.

Nicole Kidman shows her breasts and her bottom briefly.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from Dead Calm here. A preview is below.

The Edge of Power

Political thriller that starts with a curious hypothetical: What if a politician was a secret Nazi? Well, it was a bit of a joke while drunk with mates but then a socialist newspaper runs with a story that 'next big thing' politician Peter Mueller (Ivar Kants) is a secret Nazi and all hell breaks loose. The people behind the socialist newspaper Ivar (John Stone) and Judy (Katherine Thomson) won't let it go and dress up as fake Nazis and infiltrate his press conferences. But after Judy takes money offered by a powerbroker to stir up trouble, the next press conference ends with Mueller being stabbed and Ivar being kicked to death and it all looks like a set-up. A journalist who used to have ideals Steve (Henri Szeps) gets pangs of guilt for concocting the Nazi story and decides to investigate further. And what he uncovers is a conspiracy that could be coming from the highest office in the land. A movie that tries to make Australian politics exciting but it's the most boring shit imaginable and this movie is not in anyway believable. There's so many assassinations before an unbelievable final twist. A terrible mess with less understanding of Australian politics than I have.

The only nudity in the movie is in some salacious photos featuring Anna Maria Monticelli.

You can find a synopsis with VHS videos from The Edge of Power here. A preview is below.

Houseboat Horror

Cult classic or worst Australian movie ever made? Low budget incompetent horror movie about a music video director (Alan Dale) who goes on a weekend away to Lake Infinity to shoot a new music video with a band and their hangers on. The arrival of these people stirs up a long forgotten memory about a fire on a houseboat with the locals but also a killer who is seeking revenge for the injuries he received. As the crew party and shoot the video, the killer starts his revenge and thins out the crew by quite a number by the end. Let's face it, this movie only has it's cult classic status because of its pure ineptitude on many fronts and it's well deserved. Houseboat Horror is a really bad movie but it sure is inexplicably fun to watch.

Umbrella recently released a fully-featured Bluray of the movie so it's about time to upgrade the videos to HD which you'll see below. There's a number of brief scenes of nudity featuring Christine Jenson, Peppie D'Or, Katherine Hill and Sandra 'Scarlett' Wilson. As the movie was shot on video, it still looks like 1980s video recorder quality even in HD. The Bluray is slightly brightened so some scenes can be seen better, particularly the dark nude scene which is a nice bonus. The night scenes on the DVD/VHS are very hard-to-watch for how dark the are.

You can find a synopsis with newly made HD videos from Houseboat Horror here. A preview is below.

How Wonderful!

60 minute comedy about the ups-and-downs of working woman (Tracy Mann) dealing with being pregnant for the first time. Pretty stock-standard stuff with the usual tropes embraced throughout the movie. Nothing you haven't seen a million other times.

Very brief nudity from Tracy Mann as she takes off her top to embrace her newly born child.

Jigsaw

Very obscure thriller where Virginia (Rebecca Gibney) finds out that Alex (David Bradshaw), the man she's known for 3 weeks and married the day before, has turned up dead at the beach by drowning. A detective Broulle (Dominic Sweeney) thinks that Alex may have been murdered and Virginia starts to question whether she really knew him which is exacerbated when his young son turns up out of nowhere. Brouille starts asks questions to some powerful people which gets political candidate Jack McClusky (Terence Donovan) very nervous so he hires a hitman (Nick Lathouris) to kill Virginia. Virginia barely escapes but continues to investigate Alex's background and finds that his death is a little closer to home than she expected. Paranoid political thriller that attempts to be bigger than it is and it feels very out-of-place. There's a bizarre car chase where not one but two people are clinging to a regular sized car as it hurtles around the usually busy St. Kilda Road. Then there's an ending that I found impossible to work out who shot the magic bullet. Movie has pretty much disappeared.

There's no nudity in Jigsaw but there's some videos of Rebecca Gibney available here.

Lover Boy

Director Geoffrey Wright's (Romper Stomper) debut feature, a 60 minute movie about about a relationship between a bored 42 year-old woman (Gillian Jones) and a 16 year-old boy (Noah Taylor) who is a friend with the woman's son. Typical of Wright's social realist style it's working class and grimy and also features actors he would later work with like Ben Mendelsohn and Daniel Pollock.

A couple of nude scenes from Gillian Jones.

Luigi's Ladies

Wacky comedy about three women, a magazine editor Sara (Wendy Hughes), a nervous wreck Cee (Sandy Gore) and pregnant housewife Jane (Anne Tenney) who meet at a restaurant owned by their friend Luigi (David Rappaport) to chat about their chaotic lives. Sara is married to Steve (John Walton) but is tempted into an affair with the much younger Nick (Joseph Spano) which is exacerbated when there's a massive stockmarket crash where Steve loses everything. Cee is in a relationship with a cop (Ray Meagher) who's very into New Age mysticism and gets her involved. While Jane is not handling her latest pregnancy well and gets into big fights with her husband Trev (Serge Lazareff). The aforementioned stockmarket crash is a catalyst that will cause massive ructions in their friendship but will also bring them closer together. Silly, over-the-top comedy where everyone's is at the end of their tether and characters are constantly doing wacky things. Directed by actress Judy Morris and co-written by her, Wendy Hughes and other actresses, it's a movie that feels like it was made by friends who didn't really care what they were making, just enjoying each other's company.

The only nudity in the movie is from an unknown woman sunbathing topless on the beach and there's also some sexy stuff from Wendy Hughes.

Mullaway
aka Mull

Drama about a teenage girl Phoebe (Nadine Garner), affectionately known as Mull, who is thrust into a life she did not imagine after her mother dies. She is forced to look after her younger siblings as her father Frank (Bill Hunter) has shut himself away from the world. Mull attempts to live her life as a normal teenage girl but it's a struggle. She ends up falling for the singer of her older brother's band but it turns out that he would rather her brother. She then finds love with a young plumber but struggles to keep the relationship thanks to familial demands. Typical teenage drama tale that is helped drastically by Nadine Garner who was a great young actress. Otherwise it's nothing you haven't seen in a teen drama before.

There's no nudity in Mullaway but there's a few videos available here.

Out of the Body

Brian Trenchard-Smith was churning them out every few months in this stage in his career and the quality has severely dropped off. A supernatural crime thriller that follows David Gaze (Mark Hembrow), a university lecturer who starts having disturbing dreams involving the murder of various women. At the same time, someone (or something) is murdering successful women in the exact way that seems to be occurring in his dreams. His girlfriend Neva (Tessa Humphries) believes him and thinks that he is astral travelling in his sleep to the murder scenes. David calls the cops to warn them of the next murder but they think he's a crackpot. When newsreader Mary Mason (Mary Regan) is revealed to be the next victim in his dreams, he goes to warn her but he looks like a lunatic then she turns up dead and now he's the suspect. But how can he be when he was nowhere near the scene of the crime when Mary was murdered. Quite possibly the most laughable movie I've ever seen. There's the ridiculous red herrings, David's lunatic behaviour and of course an astral travelling killer. Complete and utter silliness.

Tessa Humphries shows her breasts and bottom in a couple of scenes.

The Salute of the Jugger
aka The Blood of Heroes

American co-production filmed in South Australia set in the post-apocalyptic future that is dominated by a sport where athletes called Juggers play a violent sport that is reminiscent of gridiron with a dog skull as a ball that is played over the time it takes for 100 stones to hit a gong. Kidda (Joan Chen) is desperate to join in and gets her chance when a team of travelling juggers arrive in town lead by Sallow (Rutger Hauer) and one of the team becomes injured. Kidda is raw but Sallow sees potential in her and she joins the team as they continue to travel hoping to join the government-run major league. But once they get to the city, it turns out that the man who runs the competition Lord Vile (Hugh Keays-Byrne) hates the now ailing Sallow and has asked a former champ to kill him during a challenge. But it's not going to be that easy. Surprisingly fun movie that is quite violent and never not interesting with a great cast also including Delroy Lindo and Vincent D'Onofrio. Almost turns into a Mad Max spin-off when Hugh Keays-Byrne and Max Fairchild turn up in the final act. Only movie directed by David Webb Peoples who wrote movies like Blade Runner, Unforgiven and 12 Monkeys.

Some brief nudity from Joan Chen during an attempt at sex but because both participants are so sore after a game, it can't happen. Chen has quite a history of being in Australian productions including Turtle Beach, The Home Song Stories, Mao's Last Dancer and the TV series Serangoon Road.

A Sting in the Tale

Political comedy about up-and-coming politician Diane Lane (Diane Craig) who's in a relationship with fellow politician Barry (Gary Day) and goes through the motions of being a rookie politician until she makes a speech in parliament that changes everything and now she becomes a player with political ambition which ends up alienating everyone including Barry and journalist best friend Louise (Lynne Williams). But by alienating them, she now has a chance to become the first woman prime minister and the vipers are out to get her. Fanciful look at Australian politics where one speech can make you a political player and that you can manipulate the system so much that you can fool an entire government full of people. The movie makes no bones about the plot being ridiculous but that doesn't mean that it makes the movie any better because it's in on the joke. Third political movie of the year and while it's not great it's probably the most watchable as it plays alright as a comedy.

There's brief nudity from an unknown woman in an interrupted sex scene plus a couple of sexy scenes featuring Diane Craig.

Sweetie

Comedy from Jane Campion, technically her first feature as 2 Friends is a telemovie. Kay (Karen Colston) finds the man of her dreams after reading the tea leaves and discovers that it's co-worker Louis (Tom Lycos). He's engaged but Kay convinces Louis to be with her and things are going great between them until Kay's sister Dawn, known as Sweetie (Geneviève Lemon) breaks into their house with a man she's sleeping with. Sweetie has been in a mental institution for a lengthy period but still has dreams of making it big even though she seems to be grossly overestimating her ability. Sweetie causes havoc from the minute she arrives, causing problems between Kay and Louis, so Kay enlists her father to help her get Sweetie out of the house. He's always seen Sweetie as his little darling despite her erratic behaviour so this is not going to end well. A rare comedy from Campion that's not far removed from Muriel's Wedding and is not a bad little movie. Geneviève Lemon is excellent as Sweetie, a horrible, selfish person who always wants the attention on her, but even after all that, her demise is actually quite sad.

Full frontal nudity from Karen Colston and full frontal and rear nudity from Geneviève Lemon.

You can find a synopsis with videos from Sweetie here. A preview is below.

Trouble in Paradise

Desert island romantic comedy where Rachel (Raquel Welch) is burying her husband and has decided to join his coffin that is travelling by a boat that is run by Jake (Jack Thompson) and immediately Rachel hates the sight of him. Then they hit a storm and the boat sinks and Rachel and Jake seem to be the only to people to survive and have to spend their time together on a deserted island. Did I mention that they hate one another? And you're not going to believe this, over time they come to love one another. Just in time for Rachel's not actually dead husband Arthur (Nicholas Hammond) to find them except that's not what he was actually doing. Cliché-riddled romantic comedy that goes along exactly as they all do until a ridiculous third act twist involving Rachel's not actually dead husband and you know it's lazy writing when a movie ends with a tacked on drug smuggling plot. At least Welch and Thompson make the movie fairly watchable despite the obviousness of it all.

A few side-boob scenes from Raquel Welch who was still looking mighty fine at 50.

Zilch! (NZ)

The only New Zealand release for the year. Comedic political thriller about Sam (Michael Mizrahi), a man who has his fingers in many pies, who overhears a conversation at his job at the telephone exchange about a secret tape that could be used to blackmail a politician who is deciding the winner of the tender to build the second cross harbour tunnel. The man who made the call is arrested before he can say what he has and where it is but Sam goes looking it and when he can't find the tape, he digs deeper and finds that it involves a shonky businessman (Roy Billing). Sam, along with his buddy Curtis (John Watson) dig deeper with Sam going above and beyond to find out what's going on, getting himself into more trouble by the minute and dragging his friends including dominatrix Anna (Lucy Sheehan) with him. Not a bad little movie with some decent foot chases and is good cheeky fun. Sure it's not very believable that Sam would go to the lengths he does for such little reward but who cares.

A nude scene from Louise Graham who shows her breasts after sex with Sam is aborted.

Zombie Brigade
aka Night Crawl

Absolutely strange vampire/zombie hybrid set in a small Western Australian town that has invited a Japanese businessman over to make a deal about a theme park that is going to be built locally. Turns out that the initial digging has disturbed the graves of dead Vietnam veterans who are now vampires and they come to town and start attacking the locals. In town, the businessman's translator Yoshie (Khym Lam) and a young Indigenous local Jimmy (John Moore) attempt to find a way to stop the vampires and strangely it comes in the form of another group of dead Vietnam veterans who are zombies. Very low budget vampire/zombie hybrid that is very limited in what it's produced and is not helped by a plot that's so baffling it's hard to work out how any of it makes sense. The ending is so baffling it needs to be seen to be believed, almost like an Anzac Day parade for the zombie troops. An admirable attempt at something a little different but a muddled mess all the same. Points for having two non-white leads in a movie, a rare feature in an Australian movie at the time. Having said that there's more than a bit of Japanese hatred, a recurring relic of 80s Australian movies/TV.

There's a brief side-boob scene from Maggie Wilde West playing a sex worker while Kara Barber is also featured in her underwear.

A bunch of movies released this year did not have anything to cap including the Dolph Lundgren led comic book adaptation of The Punisher, the Greek-set Paul Cox movie Island, the very good coming-of-age tale Celia, the political thriller The Humpty Dumpty Man, Noah Taylor wandering around Berlin quoting Russian authors in The Prisoner of St. Petersburg, muddled thriller Glass, the ludicrous cloning comedy Future Past, a low-budget comedy about people getting Worker's Compensation in Compo, the rubbish immigrant comedy Blowing Hot and Cold, a comedy about old people taking on police corruption in Kokoda Crescent, comedy Daisy and Simon, docu-dramas Against the Innocent and Police State, the telemovie The Saint: Fear in Fun Park and family movie What the Moon Saw.

There's nudity in Cappuccino from Cristina Parker but I can't find a copy of it (it was on Ozflix the site no longer works). There's a brief nude scene featuring a nude model in multiple named Jeff Fahey starring Minnamurra aka The Wrangler/Outback but you don't really see anything and the person is unknown. There's also nudity in the trailer for the German co-production Zucker but I don't know who it is, possibly a German actress as the movie is in German but shot mostly in Australia.

It is unknown whether there's nudity in the Welsh co-production Becca and two Bill Bennett movies Malpractice and Mortgage.

That's it for the 1980s so I will tot up how many scene each actress did for the decade. Here's the list:
10 Wendy Hughes (including 3 brief/accidental scenes)
4 Alyson Best, Angela Menzies-Wills, Anna Maria Monticelli (plus she had some brief nudity in Nomads)
3 Judy Morris, Noni Hazlehurst, Jennifer Cluff, Mary Regan, Tracy Mann, Brenda Knowles

And the totals for both the 70s and 80s combined include:
12 Wendy Hughes
6 Judy Morris
5 Jacki Weaver, Kris McQuade, Angela Menzies-Wills
4 Abigail, Alyson Best, Anna Maria Monticelli

1990 is looking good for a return back to two updates despite the drop-off in the number of movies being made is still occurring.
