Australian/New Zealand movies: 1984
Another big jump in the amount of movies made/released this year as the 10BA era has well and truly set in. A real mixed bag with the first lot of movies, some absolutely terrible movies (Channel Chaos, Future Schlock, Fantasy Man) and some true bafflers (Death Warmed Up, Kindred Spirits).
Also some movies that weren't released until way later which makes their year of release hard to work out. Among The Cinders was made in 1983 but not released until way later while Channel Chaos and Future Schlock got released years later. Then there's Innocent Prey which wasn't released in Australia until Umbrella re-discovered it recently and only got a release in America in 1991.
1984
Among The Cinders (NZ)
Coming-of-age drama about a teen boy Nick (Paul O'Shea) who's become a constant worry for his parents then becomes further disillusioned when he gets into an accident with his best friend which results in his friend dying. So his 'sovereign citizen' grandfather (Derek Hardwick) decides to take him under his wing. His grandfather abruptly decides to go camp out at his old abandoned shack and along the way they come across free-spirit Sally (Rebecca Gibney), who takes a liking to Nick. Based on the novel by Maurice Shadbolt, this is a strange tale where not a lot happens and feels very much of the time. Not a bad little movie though.
A few very good nude scenes from Rebecca Gibney plus a scene in a wet dress. There's also a scene where Shelley Simpson and Jill Ann Davies change their clothes during a modelling shoot and we see them naked.
You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from Among The Cinders here. A preview is below.

Channel Chaos
One of those low budget Melbourne comedies, this time about the goings on at a failing TV station. New shows are needed so we get to see a selection of what could be on the TV. Also a wannabe 60 Minutes reporter is murdered just as he's about to file the story that makes his career and everyone's a suspect. A politically incorrect comedy but not in a good way because the jokes are utterly appalling and plainly obvious. Another contender for the worst Australian movie ever.
Diane Fox shows her breasts in a strip quiz show while there's also nudity from others.

Constance (NZ)
Wasn't able to find the full movie but the first 10 minutes of this movie is available at NZ On Screen and in the opening scene Susan Trainer plays a naked dancer which is a surprise considering the movie is supposedly rated PG.

The Coolangatta Gold
aka The Gold and the Glory
Incendiary sports drama about a family brought to their knees by their father's (Nick Tate) inability to get over getting second in the local Iron Man surf-lifesaving event The Coolangatta Gold. He is desperately trying to get his son Adam (Colin Friels) ready for the year's event while his other son Steve (Joss McWilliam) goes his own way much to his father's disgust. Then after a night out, Adam gets in an accident and the family tensions boil over but it may bring the brothers closer together when the both take on The Coolangatta Gold. Cliché-riddled sports drama that is so over-the-top it becomes laughably bad but no more so than Nick Tate's up-to-11 performance as the father who won't accept second best or anything else for that matter. Subtlety does not exist in this movie.
Some brief nudity from actual dancer Josephine Smulders playing a dancer in a baffling sex as a dance routine scene which is quite fitting for this ridiculous movie.

Crime of the Decade
One of two teen dramas directed by Ken Cameron for the year, this one a telemovie for ABC that follows a bunch of teens who live at a halfway house who are trying to make it in the world even after their parents have abandoned them. Meanwhile, a local wheeler and dealer (John Gregg) is on the campaign trail to be elected to state parliament but he increasingly seems to come down hard on the local teens. Two of the teens, Steve (Mark Davis) and Elly (Toni Allaylis) fall for one another but everything comes to a head when Steve's mate dies of a drug overdose and that's when the 'crime of the decade' is done. Starts off as a solid drama about kids struggling against the odds but ends abruptly and in an unsatisfying and unearned way.
No nudity in the movie but Toni Allaylis is harassed while in the bath and Judy Nunn lounges in her underwear.

Death Warmed Up (NZ/Aus)
Typically nutty New Zealand horror movie from David Blyth (Angel Mine) about a teenage killer (Michael Hurst) who is chemically coerced by crazy doctor (Gary Day) into killing his parents all because the doctor has come up for a cure for death which the boy's father was against. After spending 7 years in a psychiatric hospital, the boy is released and gets on with his life by going on a trip with his girlfriend and other friends to Waiheke Island to look at the old tunnels. Coincidentally, the crazy doctor is experimenting with his cure for death in these tunnels and his experiments have begun running amok. Oh and the real reason the boy is there is to get revenge on the crazy doctor. Extremely violent and incredibly nutty movie that has a number of good ideas but also feels like there were some issues along the way particularly with the rushed ending. Not bad but could have been better.
Some brief nudity from Norelle Scott as she has sex in a car while they travel on a ferry.

Every Move She Makes
Hysterical stalker thriller telemovie where country girl Alison (Julie Nihill) starts a new job in the city and catches the eye of weird nerd Matthew (Doug Bowles) who she humours but is not interested in. Matthew wants Alison and he stalks her making her too scared to leave her home. Has it's moments in regards to how women feel when they are stalked and with it's villain who's portrayed as a non-violent oddball that it makes him quite effective as a stalker. But the movie has quite a few ridiculous moments including a car chase on the wrong side of the road.
Some brief side-boob from Julie Nihill plus a scene where she's nude behind a shower screen.
You can find a synopsis with collages and VHS quality videos from Every Move She Makes here. A preview is below.

Fantasy Man
Silly comedy/drama about Nick (Harold Hopkins) who hates his job, is not really attracted to his wife and seems to be going through a midlife crisis. He takes a liking to the local fast food worker Donna (who wouldn't when it's Kerry Mack from Hostage: The Christine Maresch Story) so he does what any normal person would do and start talking 30+ minute showers dreaming of being with her which makes his wife 'strangely' suspicious. Meanwhile his wife Liz (Jeanie Drynan) is encouraged to see her neighbour in a platonic manner. Then Nick asks Donna out and things don't go to plan. Ridiculous movie where no-one does a thing that any human would actually do to the point where the movie feels like a sex comedy without any sex. A lot of it's 75 minute runtime is taken up with Nick either having or trying to have a shower. This could've only been made in the 10BA era.
There's no nudity in Fantasy Man but there are some sexy videos here.
Fast Talking
The second of the Ken Cameron teen dramas for the year and definitely more rounded of the two. Steve (Rod Zuanic) is a teenage hustler brought about by having a drunk for father and an absent mother. He tries to be one step ahead of everyone and almost always succeeds but when his marijuana dealing business is found out, Steve finds himself on the way out of school thanks to a cane-happy principal and his fellow students sick of his shit. While running numerous scams, he has time for a sort-of mentor (Steve Bisley) who works on motorcycles and helps him get one and also gets help from a teacher (Tracy Mann) who's also on the way out of the school. Has a number of actors from Crime of the Decade in the cast including Zuanic who's incredibly charismatic and is well cast as hustler who always has an escape plan. Definitely the better of the two Ken Cameron movies thanks to a winning lead and a good mix of lighter and darker stuff. Was quite alarmed to see a scene where the principal used the cane on the hands of some students (even the cops found it bizarre). Didn't realise it was still happening this late in time.
No nudity in the movie but Toni Allaylis flashes her underpants in one scene.

Future Schlock
If Channel Chaos wasn't bad enough, the same filmmakers delivered a possibly worse movie in the same year. Set after the middle-class uprising in 1990 where a wall separates the layabouts and the suburbanites, a group of layabout radicals including Sarah (Mary-Anne Fahey) and Bear (Michael Bishop) aka Pancho and The Cisco Kid wreak havoc amongst the suburbanites when they are not putting on a show at the popular bar. So the suburbanites decide to send their two best cops after them. Meanwhile one of the suburbanites Ronnie (Tracey Callander) takes a liking to the duo and they let her hang around and share in everything they do. Typically unfunny stuff but acts a relic that features a number of Melbourne comic actors before they got famous. That's about the best you can say about it. Oof...
Still one of the great surprises in seeing both Tracey Callender (Acropolis Now) and Mary-Anne Fahey (The Comedy Company) very naked in this movie. There's also a bunch of other unknown actresses naked throughout the movie.
Disappointingly it looks like this is the best quality we're going to get which is shame as I'd love to see the below scene in better quality.

Heart of the Stag (NZ)
Drama where Peter (Bruno Lawrence) comes across a remote sheep farm after his car breaks down that is run by Robert (Terence Cooper) who is forcing himself on his daughter Cathy (Australian actress Mary Regan). Robert lets Peter stay until he fixes his car but there's a weird tension on the farm and Robert is a total hard-arse. Peter makes his presence felt and ends up winning over Robert who offers him a job which he takes. He then tries to talk to Cathy but she runs from him and is rarely out of her father's eye but over time she lets her guard down and lets Peter in. Then he finds out what her father does to her and Peter tries to help her escape. Typically depressing New Zealand drama helped by good performances particularly by the ever-reliable Bruno Lawrence. But the movie is very hard going and Cathy is understandably tough to warm too.
A couple of scenes where Mary shows her breasts including when she rips her top open.

Innocent Prey
Shot in both Australia and Dallas, this horror movie stars P.J. Soles (Halloween) who is suspicious of her older husband (Kit Taylor), so much so that she follows him and spies him slitting the throat of a prostitute. She dobs him into the police and he is sent to a mental hospital which the husband promptly kills some guards and escapes then goes after his ex. With the help of a sheriff (Martin Balsam, a long way from Psycho), she escapes to Australia but that doesn't stop her ex from following her. But she's ready and has a surprise waiting for him. A not all bad horror movie that makes huge leaps in credibility particularly in regards to the killer.
In the last update I realised very late that there's an uncut version of the movie available on DVD thanks to Umbrella Entertainment, which I actually had and just needed to find it. I also got out the VHS version I had and found out that I was wrong about it not being released in Australia on VHS as the copy I had was taken from the Australian version and going by the trailers after the movie would've been released around 1989-1990 which is still a long stay on-the-shelf. It was also the cut version as was released in America.
Sadly, there's no extra stuff to cap in the movie and it's hard-to-know what the extra 13 minutes actually is without a closer look, I'm assuming it's just padding out of the plot.
Anyway, I decided to remake the videos from the slightly better DVD which you'll find below. The only major difference is I decided to add more to the Debi Sue Voorhees video as she was wearing something sexy and I didn't capture this the first time.
There's some brief nudity from Debi Sue Voorhees (who'd later turn up in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning).

Kindred Spirits
Strange drama about a dancer Julie (Julieanne Newbould) who has a vision about a man who dies at a beach and it haunts her because she swears it's real but it didn't actually happen. Except it did happen but in the 1930s. Then she starts seeing the man around town in the present day so she tries to find out who he is and even contacts his now elderly former lover. Absolute head-scratcher of a movie that ends in the most bizarre way involving the notorious Grenville Train Disaster that happened in 1977. Good luck trying to make sense of it.
There's no nudity in Kindred Spirits but there are some sexy videos here.
More to come, hopefully on Sunday including some movies with a fair bit of nudity.
The rest of the movies from 1984 and strangely most of them are only available from VHS sources which is a shame. At least they are available in some form. There's also a couple of movies with a lot of nudity like the erotic drama Leonora and sex comedy Melvin, Son of Alvin plus a fair bit of nudity from American actress Diane Franklin in the New Zealand made Second Time Lucky, which I've capped for the first time with collages.
Leonora
Rubbish erotic romantic drama about a woman named Leonora (Mandi Miller) who's stuck in a dead-end marriage with a sleazy car dealership owner Simon (David Evans) who cheats on her constantly. She then catches the eye of video director Mark (Leon Marvell) just as Simon suggests they should have an open marriage. But when he finds out that she's actually indulging in the open marriage, Simon loses it at Leonora and forcibly ends it. But Mark doesn't want to give up on Leonora so he goes to psychic witch Helena (Angela Menzies-Wills, reliably nude) to 'suggest' to Leonora change her mind but then Helena falls for Mark and the melodrama just never ends. I don't know why these two idiots are so enamoured with Leonora as she's a complete drip, not worth anyone's time.
A lot of nudity from Mandi Miller throughout the movie with a few nude scenes from Angela Menzies-Wills. There's also further nudity from Lala Young, Corinne Collins and Juonika Zan Somerz. Sadly it's not in the best quality but the likelihood of it being released in a better format is pretty much zero.

Mail-Order Bride
Very much of the time ABC telemovie where middle-aged no hoper Kevin (Ray Meagher, Alf from Home and Away) decides to get a Filipino mail-order bride to bring back to his caravan in the middle of nowhere. Ampy (Charito Ortez) arrives and immediately feels wildly out of place in her surroundings, not helped by the rampant racism and sexism of the remote town. She attempts to find solace in religion and the few locals who give her the time of day like Indigenous welfare worker Iris (Justine Saunders) but that ends when Kevin finds out about it. Things get worse for Ampy until a horrific incident one night entraps her in a nightmare. Strangely feels like a woman's version of Wake in Fright where Ampy can't seem to escape from the hell of this very Australia country town. While it's not as good as that movie, there are moments of intrigue but this telemovie is not very subtle and it's ending is a special type of hell for Ampy where things could only get worse. I also wondered how the chronically unemployed Kevin could get a mail-order bride but what do I know.
No nudity in the movie but there's a few sexy scenes featuring Charito Ortez.

Man of Letters
Another ABC telemovie this time about prominent academic Sir Dorton Serry (Warren Mitchell) who comes to town thinking he's going to wow at his speaking gig and maybe get a little action while he's there. Turns out he can't handle women's changing role in the world and everywhere he goes he humiliates himself. Then he comes home and cops the same from his wife, daughter and a little girl he comes across. It's good seeing this dinosaur lose his place in the world but the 'feminism' is very basic and Dorton is supposed to be a bit of a cad but he feels very weak and some of the scenarios he gets into are more than a bit silly.
Some brief nudity from Genevieve Mooy and Debra May in a silly scene where they mock the old man. Also Arna-Maria Winchester flashes her breasts.

Melvin, Son of Alvin
Bringing back the very 70s Alvin Purple for the 80s where free love has mostly died off but everyone is still horny. Turns out Alvin (Graeme Blundell) had a kid called Melvin (Gerry Sont) who is now a teenage boy (phew, that... decade went fast) and just like his old man, all the girls are now chasing after him which he is repulsed by. After being besieged by young women, Melvin is saved by a Greek girl named Gloria (Lenita Psillakis) and he falls for her although she is followed like a hawk by her mother. Meanwhile, Alvin's dodgy agent finds out that Alvin has a son and looks to find a way to exploit it for his own gain. Utterly silly movie, almost a relic of a relic, an idea out-of-time but it's still a little better movie than the unbelievably awful Alvin Rides Again.
Quite a few actresses are naked in the movie including Peppie D'Or, Jeanette Leigh, Connie Pound, Pauline Winston and Nicole Reading plus Val Christensen is in a wet see-through top. There's also other women who show their breasts throughout the movie or are featured in sexy scenes.

My First Wife
The annual Paul Cox movie brings back Wendy Hughes as the unsatisfied wife of pretentious Classical musician/radio announcer John (John Hargreaves) who has an affair with another man and finally decides to break it off with him. And he doesn't take it well ending up in a deep depressive spiral which results in a stay in hospital which doesn't end up helping. He then makes a play for their young daughter, kidnapping her and pretty much setting fire to any chance of them getting back together. Strangely it feels like Cox is siding with John which is wild considering all the shitty things he does. Get the feeling it coincides with something that happened in the director's own life and you'd hope not as it would portray him in a pretty bad light. Not one of Cox's best.
A couple of nude scenes from Wendy Hughes including brief full frontal nudity.

One Night Stand
Pre-apocalyptic drama set just as a nuclear war has broken out between America and Russia and the nuclear bombs are just about the rain down on Sydney. After bombing out at a Midnight Oil concert the previous night, Sharon and Eva (Cassandra Delaney and Saskia Post) are about to go out again when they come across AWOL American naval officer Sam (Tyler Coppin) and along with cleaner friend Brendan (Jay Hackett) they begin to talk about life and then figuring out what to do next after getting word of the bomb being dropped. Set in the middle of 80s nuclear war paranoia, this talky John Duigan directed drama has it's moments and a fairly haunting ending but feels silly in light of the nuclear war never happening.
Some brief full frontal nudity from Cassandra Delaney as she tries on some of the stage dresses at the Opera House.

Razorback
Prominent music video director Russell Mulcahy's debut movie, a creature feature about a mutated razorback pig that is attacking people in a remote town. American man Carl Winters (Gregory Harrison) goes looking for his wife (Judy Morris) after she goes missing but we know she's been mutilated by the pig. Meanwhile, a couple of hillbilly kangaroo hunting brothers (David Argue and Chris Haywood) are enlisted by Carl to find his wife. He also comes across the house of a razorback hunter (Bill Kerr) who is haunted by his encounter with the rabid pig. With the help of a scientist Sarah (Arkie Whiteley), they all go hunting for the razorback who hasn't finished killing just yet. Not a bad little mutant pig movie that has obvious limitations and with Mulcahy at the helm is very stylish looking. It's just a shame that the razorback pig kills aren't all that memorable.
Some brief nudity from Arkie Whiteley while she takes a shower outside.

Relatives
Dysfunctional family comedy where a family gets together for their grandfather's 80th birthday just as his place is being sold off. His son Geoffrey (Ray Barrett) hasn't told the rest of the family about this while the rest of the family are either carrying out affairs or wanting their share of the inheritance. Pretty low key stuff with the family strangely light on for drama and tension. Mostly found the movie pretty boring.
There's a lengthy nude scene from Alyson Best where she shows her breasts throughout. Sadly this would be Alyson's last movie after a fairly impressive run of nudity in movies.
You can find a synopsis with collages and VHS videos from Relatives here. A preview is below.

Second Time Lucky (NZ/Aus)
Comedy where the Devil makes a bet with God that he could make two people sin in the same way that Adam and Eve did and they choose two dorky American college students Adam (Roger Wilson of Porky's) and Eve (Diane Franklin of The Last American Virgin). Over time the bet becomes more complicated, getting Adam and Eve into various historical scenarios to see if Eve can tempt Adam to do bad. Strange movie that starts off as a seeming like it's going to be another college-set sex comedy but makes a sharp turn into a movie not unlike Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 1 except with limited comedy,a number of hammy actors and plenty of bawdy scenes that seem like an excuse to get Diane Franklin naked, which is done very successfully. That's about the only thing that's done successfully though.
A fair amount of nudity from Diane Franklin throughout the movie including a lot during a 20 minute scene in The Garden of Eden plus a couple of breast flashing scenes. There's also random nudity from unknown women throughout the movie.

The Settlement
Light drama about two drifters Kearney and Martin (Bill Kerr and John Jarratt) who go from town-to-town looking for work and when there's none, they run little scams to get by. Things change for the two when they enter the town of Cedar Creek, first with the elderly Kearney getting sick and then when they meet local barmaid Joycie (Lorna Lesley) who is sympathetic towards them especially after she's fired from her job. It isn't long before the town starts talking about how the three are living and they want them out. Pretty gentle stuff with no real lofty ambitions but is pretty watchable with three fairly amiable lead performances.
Lorna Lesley briefly shows side-boob while changing before getting into bed. She has far better nudity in Just Out of Reach.

Silver City
Romantic drama where two Polish immigrants Nina (Gosia Dobrowolska) and Julian (Ivar Kants) meet on a train and they reminisce about the affair they had years earlier. We then go back to post-WWII Australia where Nina and Julian meet as fresh off the boat immigrants attempting to make a go of it. They instantly fall for one another but there's one major problem and it's that Julian is married to Anna (Anna Maria Monticelli). They continue to see one another while avoiding getting caught including hatching a plan to live together while he's still living with Anna. Fairly decent romantic movie that's mostly unsentimental about their circumstances and it kind of feels like they were going to make it together despite the insurmountable odds of their situation. Gosia's first Australian movie and she would later become a fixture in Paul Cox movies.
No nudity in the movie but there's a bikini scene featuring Gosia Dobrowolska. She would do plenty of nudity in future movies particularly in Paul Cox movies.

Stanley: Every Home Should Have One
Wacky comedy about hopeless oddball Stanley (Peter Bensley) who doesn't fit in at his father's company so he goes about finding a way to fit in somewhere by moving in to the most normal family in Australia which is headed by Norm (Graham Kennedy) with his wife and kids. He also wants to get a normal job and enlists Amy (Nell Campbell) to help him find it. She kind of has a thing for him but doesn't want to show it then her friend sets them up and they have a series of disastrous dates not helped by Stanley's father sending his butler Berger (Max Cullen) to spy on him. Along the way he manages to work out his life plus help out all the members of the family he moved in with. Suffers from having dangerous levels of wackiness most of which compensates for the lack of laughs throughout. It doesn't help that the lead is a complete dead weight, wildly miscast with a complete lack of humour.
No real nudity in the movie but there's a few sexy scenes featuring Nell Campbell.

Vigil (NZ)
Drama about a mother Elizabeth (Australian actress Penelope Stewart) and her daughter who try to go on after losing their patriarch in a tragic accident. Elizabeth has been left with about a thousand sheep that need to get ready for sale but no-one to help prepare them until Ethan (Frank Whitten) comes along. Both mother and daughter struggle with the arrival of Ethan in their lives but they eventually get along even after the daughter makes a disturbing claim about something that happened during a trip she and Ethan had. Minimalist debut from visually impressive director Vincent Ward (Map of the Human Heart, What Dreams May Come) where not a lot happens but if you have the patience, it's not without it's charms. There's also a couple of spectacular shots set on the edge of a cliff that I haven't forgotten ever since I saw them.
Some brief full frontal nudity from Penelope Stewart.

There's also plenty of movies released in 1984 that have nothing to cap including the disabled child drama Annie's Coming Out, the Werner Herzog directed Indigenous drama Where the Green Ants Dream, union drama Strikebound, horror portmanteau Fragments of Terror, sci-fi thriller Starship aka Lorca and the Outlaws, the Vince Colosimo starring teen drama Street Hero, a biopic of Country and Western singer Slim Dusty called The Slim Dusty Movie, the baffling low-budget spy comedy The Narcissus Factor, a bunch of telemovies like The Great Gold Swindle, High Country, Matthew and Son, Queen of the Road, Run Chrissie Run! and Cluedo-style live who-dunnit Super Sleuth. There's also strangely nothing in Undercover, a movie about an women's underwear brand that is set in the 1920s when they still hadn't discovered bras. Also the kids telemovie The Fire in the Stone and director Rolf de Heer's debut, the kids movie Tail of a Tiger. Plus there's the animated movies Dot and the Koala and The Camel Boy.
It was also a pretty busy year for New Zealand movies with 6 movies already listed and then there's nothing in the comedy Came A Hot Friday, Maori mythical drama The Silent One, odd feminist thriller Trial Run and the pretty decent man versus wild horses drama Wild Horses. I haven't been able to find copies of the movies Iris or Other Halves.
Again, 1985 is looking like another big one so it'll probably be split into 2 parts.
