Australian/New Zealand movies: 2004 part 1

A quite good year with a good mix of movies with a fair bit of nudity and movies that have one or two decent scenes. This update features good nudity in Defenceless: A Blood Symphony and Paul Cox's Human Touch.

Part 2 of the 2004 update has some excellent nudity particularly in the movies Shot of Love and Abbie Cornish in Somersault. There's also decent scenes from Diana Glenn in Oyster Farmer and Emma Lung in Peaches.

Aussie Park Boyz

Perth made low budget action rip-off of The Warriors. Pep (Joe Murabito) heads the Aussie Park Boyz out of Osborne Park, a group of mostly Italian-Australians, who go around picking fights for money against other rag tag gangs in the area. Pep vouches for Cam (director Nunzio La Bianca), a hothead who thinks with his fists rather than his head. The two are sent to a drug deal by local kingpin Big Jimmy (James Mercanti), but it goes wrong and Cam beats a guy to death. Pep and Cam are arrested on the spot and serve 16 months in prison where they barely survive the Maori run prison. Two years after their release, Pep and Cam and a bunch of Aussie Park Boyz head across town to get some tickets where they are spotted by the brother of the man Cam beat to death and the brother goes ballistic. He sets up a plan to frame Cam for the rape of the head of the Maori gang's girl so that they can get him. That's the least of the Aussie Park Boyz problems because every gang in the area wants a piece of the them. It's going to be a long night. Poorly made movie that takes forever to get going and when it does it's just a flagrant rip-off of The Warriors, which is the only reason to watch this movie.

Brief nudity from Amy Stuart as she cleans herself up after being raped and an unknown woman shows her breasts.

You can find a synopsis with collages and videos from Aussie Park Boyz here. A preview is below.

Big Reef

Ooof, struggling to remember this Channel 9 telemovie. A pilot set on the Gold Coast and there's a gratuitous bikini scene from Madeleine West. I get the feeling nothing else from the movie is worth remembering because it did not go to series.

No nudity in Big Reef but there's some sexy stuff from Madeleine West in her first post-Neighbours role, which you can find here.

The Brush-Off

Second of two telemovies based on the Melbourne-set comedy/mystery novels of Shane Maloney and adapted by comedian John Clarke. Murray Whelan (David Wenham) is a fixer for Labor Party minister Angelo Agnelli (Mick Molloy) who can't help but get into trouble. This time an artist has apparently drowned himself in the fountain outside the gallery and Murray is asked to investigate and finds that things are rotten in the art community. Apparently the artist was forging famous paintings and someone is making a packet out of it. Pretty watchable movie, played for laughs and there's more than a few. The plot is a bit convoluted but it doesn't really matter. Strangely this is directed by Sam Neill, the only time he directed a feature length movie. I'm assuming it's because he and John Clarke are old mates from back in New Zealand.

Heather Mitchell shows her bottom in one scene and then double Naome Ivushkov shows her bottom for Heather in another. Both scenes are available below.

The Crop

Oddball comedy set in 80s Queensland where bar owner Blade (George Elliot) is hurting because the police are cracking down on drunk driving and that's most of his business. So Blade decides to make a little extra cash growing dope with his mate Wack (Rhys Muldoon) and unsurprisingly turns out to be more than handful. Has a strange vibe as it seems to be going for something different but doesn't quite pull it off.

There's some strip club scenes featuring topless nudity but they are all wearing pasties with tassels over their nipples.

You can find a synopsis with videos from The Crop here. A preview is below.

Defenceless: A Blood Symphony

After a couple of forgettable erotic thrillers (with extensive nudity) in 2003, Mark Savage comes back with this weird silent revenge thriller. After her husband and then lover (Erin Walsh) are murdered by ruthless property developers, The Woman (Susanne Hausschmid) then becomes their target because of her opposition to a development on the beach that she loves. Well, she and her son are killed but 9 months later The Woman emerges from the surf a shell of her former self, found by a young girl (Bethany Fisher) who helps The Woman get her bearings although now The Woman is a cannibalistic dimwit. The girl's stepfather kills the girl and The Woman decides to get revenge then sets about finding out what happened to her and then enacts a nasty revenge on her killers. Interesting way to tell the age old revenge thriller but once The Woman dies, the movie gets increasingly silly and The Woman becomes a monster who inexplicably starts eating her victims organs. Her turning to cannibalism includes eating the remains of her husband which is so ridiculous, it's hard to take seriously anything that happens after that. Good idea, silly execution.

Susanne Hausschmid and Erin Walsh both show their breasts.

Dreams for Life

Slow-moving drama about middle aged Ellen (Maria Mercedes) who wants love but doesn't believe she deserves it. She seems to be pining over someone until she meets Martin (David Paterson), the son of a friend who is all grown up now and shows an interest in her. Ellen is reluctant to pursue a relationship but over time she convinces herself to go for it. It seems to go well until it comes time for sex and Ellen decides that maybe this has all gone a bit far. Then Stephen (Don Halbert), her lost love, comes back into her life. Molasses-paced movie and even at 75 minutes feels like an eternity not helped by Ellen's stubbornness to commit to anything.

Maria Mercedes briefly shows her pubic hair as she undresses for a bath. Videos from Dreams for Life are available below.

Floodhouse

50 minute drama where teenage Mara (Victoria Thaine) is told by her grandmother to go live with her father and sister on the outskirts of town. Her father Harry (Robert Menzies) is a bit of drip who struggles to maintain his dirt farm so Mara feels a need to visit her hippie mother Ava (Catherine McClements) who barely seems capable of doing anything either. Over time, Mara gets a crush on vagabond Herringbone John (Brendan Cowell) and this crush will cause all sorts of trouble during a party on a stormy night but it also might bring her closer to her mother. OK drama driven by a decent lead performance from Victoria Thaine who carries the movie quite well and proves why she was the go-to young actress for the next few years.

Catherine McClements shows her breasts in a couple of scenes as a clothing adverse hippie while Victoria Thaine has a few sexy scenes which you can find below.

Fracture (NZ)

First of two movies released this year based on the novels of Maurice Gee. Brent (Jared Turner) robs houses but one day he is interrupted by a homeowner Ulla (Jennifer Ward-Lealand) who he kicks down the stairs as he escapes, knocking her out. Meanwhile his sister Leeanne (Kate Elliott) is bringing up her new son by herself which her religious mother (Miranda Harcourt) isn't happy about. She lives with Jody (Jay Saussey) and her abusive boyfriend Danny (Paul Glover), who has an eye on her. It turns out that Ulla is fighting for her life so her family get in touch with her father Howard (John Noble), a hot shot lawyer with political ambitions who is neck-deep in the trial of his brother Gordon (Alistair Browning), who has been absent from their lives since the divorce from her Ulla's mother Gwen (Liddy Holloway). At first, Brent is cocky about what happened but when his fence Mrs. Ponder (Brenda Kendall) works out that he's behind what happened, she threatens him and attempts to get him to go to Sydney. This starts Brent's descent into a personal hell which would lead to him becoming a shadow of his self. Brent's crime affects two families which will either bring them closer together or tear them apart. OK drama that has one large problem it struggles to overcome. The character of Brent may be the stupidest character I've ever seen. He does things that are incredibly nuts and it gets more ridiculous with everything he does. It's hard to believe that anyone could do the things he ends up doing. There are some good things mostly involving the victim's family but I just got more frustrated by Brent that I didn't even care by the end.

Brief side-boob from Kate Elliott.

The Garth Method

Low budget comedy where Garth (Gregory Pakis) is a struggling actor who misses out on all the roles, barely even getting an audition. After bundling up his agent, he finds out that he's not 'manly' and doesn't have much experience with women so he starts trying to hit on women and is completely unsuccessful. He finally loses his virginity to a stripper who takes an interest in him and things start to pick up acting wise as he lands a role in a big movie. He starts to bulk up for the role but overdoes it, ends up with insomnia then in hospital and finds out that the producers want a bigger name for his role. That tears it for Garth so over a week, he along with another struggling actor Lorna (Katrina Baylis) concoct a plan to make a movie where they force people at gunpoint to be in their movie and it goes about as well as expected. Cult hit back in the day and it plays like the small movie that could but ultimately the movie has a concept way to wild to express with its meagre budget and while the intentions are there, the skill to bring them out isn't. Still pretty watchable though.

No nudity in The Garth Method but there's a video from the movie available here.

Get Rich Quick

Comedy thriller where a struggling artist, a deadbeat gambler art dealer, an avant garde artist who's really a drug dealer, a junkie, another junkie who's just been released from prison, a sports star turned gangster and a gang of thieves all enter each other's path all because they want a lot of money quickly. It all culminates in a bank in Byron Bay. And it makes very little sense, if any. When Australian movies imitated Tarantino, it usually ended badly and by the time of this movie's release it was at least 5 years too late for that craze. Then there's baffling moments like the man just out of jail who decides to get rich quick by faking a funny video for Australia's Funniest Home Video show and ends up killing the bloke who's been made a fool and then just buries him at the beach(!). There's a surprisingly decent Australian cast for this low budget movie with a whole bunch of actors who are fairly well known like Jason Clarke, Anthony Hayes, Ben Oxenbould, Marshall Napier, Malcolm Kennard amongst others which suggests that this movie should've got some sort of release in Australia but it never has and the DVD I capped this from is a terrible US DVD.

Blazey Best briefly shows her breasts.

Go Big

Light comedy telemovie where Gina (Justine Clarke) is fired from her telemarketing job by her stubborn boss so she goes for a drink only to be refused service for how she is dressed. She decides to spend her last dollars on a business suit to show up the bartender and while at the bar she meets brothers Ethan (Tom Long) and Lars (Leon Ford) who are play-acting being big shots so they can get investors in the company they've called 'Go Big'. Well despite being broke, Gina decides to join the brothers in making their company but after an investor dies during lunch, they decide to change tack and go after a big fish in Lachlan Murdoch Hamish Fitz-Herbert (Alex Dimitriades) and set about a plan to infiltrate his life and make it look like they belong in his world so that they can get his attention and hopefully invest in their company. Along the way, Gina and Ethan fall for one another and Hamish falls for their scheme and invests $100 million. There a big initial success but it turns out that it's all a set-up to dump rubbish companies on them at the behest of Hamish's ailing father and things go from bad to worse when it turns out Gina's loving parents mortgaged the house to invest in 'Go Big'. Something different for a telemovie, a rise-and-fall story about the little company that could that's pretty watchable and the three leads are very likeable particularly Gina. I didn't really understand all the business stuff but it doesn't really matter as it's a fun ride most of the way.

No nudity in Go Big but I've capped a couple of scenes featuring Justine Clarke below.

Hamlet X

Video installation of a movie that supposed to be Hamlet but after an hour I couldn't remember anything that happened so I gave up. Just a non-stop stream of consciousness and repetition that is indecipherable and completely unwatchable. No idea, none...

Human Touch

Paul Cox continues in Adelaide with this arty drama that follows Anna (Jacqueline McKenzie), the lead singer of a choir who comes to the attention of photographic artist Edward (Chris Haywood). She decides to model for him and he gives her money to go towards the choir who are about to tour China. This is fine until her struggling artist husband David (Aaron Blabey) sees the photos and starts to believe that Anna and Edward are having an affair, not helped by his friend George (Aden Young) fanning those flames. David questions their marriage and what she's doing with George. Anna agrees to a refresh of their marriage in France but comes into the attention of skeevy real estate agent Bernard (Simon McBurney). A bit saucier than usual Cox movie as it involves some nude modelling plus a bit of sexual frustration. Does have a pretty funny scene where Simon McBurney turns up as a Frenchman who goes too far with Anna so David stops at his shop and punches him in the face. There's also some creepy stuff too when George tells David to drug Anna to 'have sex' with her but chickens out after drugging her. Ooof...

Plentiful nudity from Jacqueline McKenzie throughout the movie plus Angela Noack shows her breasts in photos and now celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow shows her breasts and top of her bottom during a massage scene.

In My Father's Den (NZ)

Second of the Maurice Gee adaptations, this time a searing drama/mystery. After spending many years as a war photojournalist Paul (English actor Matthew Macfadyen) returns to his old home town after his father's funeral. His religious brother Andrew (Colin Moy), who had to pick up the pieces after Paul left isn't happy to see him because he has to deal with his father's will although Paul isn't interested in anything from his father who he had a massive falling out with. Paul takes a job as a teacher at the local high school where he comes across Celia (Emily Barclay) who is interested in his work and they become friends but this gets them unwanted attention. Even more when Celia disappears and the town turns on Paul accusing him of her foul play. Celia's disappearance also forces him to relive his past and that he may actually be Celia's father. Extremely riveting drama and simply one of the best New Zealand movies ever made. Great performances from Macfayden and Barclay and a story that becomes more intriguing and horrifying by each revelation.

Brief nudity from Emily Barclay.

Josh Jarman

Comedy about struggling playwright Josh Jarman (Marcus Graham) who in an extreme stroke of luck actually gets his play made but only because without his knowledge, he's accidentally sleeping with daughter of producer Billows (Kim Gyngell) and he wants Sasha (Kestie Morassi) to be happy. That's only the start of his problems. His play is about to be torn apart by a respected director, Billow's wife Edwina (Suzy Cato-Gashler) wants him badly, his roommate Russ (Damien Richardson) is a struggling actor/bungling robber who's about to drag Josh into it and he's actually fallen for his housesitting neighbour Maxine (Daniela Farinacci). Passable comedy that if you're Australian you'll notice that the movie is cameo heavy. It's like a game of 'spot the known local actor' which is distracting but the movie is amiable without reaching any great heights.

No nudity in Josh Jarman but there's a couple of underwear scenes from Kestie Morassi plus other scenes from the movie available here.

Love in the First Degree

Sticking with the artistic theme, another comedy this time of the romantic variety when struggling Shakespearean actor Fred (Rhett Giles) takes a temp job at a law firm run by Leslie (Joy Smithers) and after an initial misunderstanding, Fred becomes a breathe of fresh air around the place. Leslie is close to getting married to lecherous Graham (Walter Kennard) but she finally finds out about his dalliances and leaves him. Well it isn't long before Fred and Leslie fall for one another but they have to keep it a secret from their workmates and her parents who think she's dating a lawyer. Then Fred gets the role he's always wanted and this complicates his relationship with Leslie. Very light romantic comedy where they're supposed to keep the relationship quiet but I swear everyone already knows about before they announce it but this isn't acknowledged. Very few laughs but the final scene has it's moments when the Shakespeare in the Park play goes from bad to worse not helped by Fred saying Macbeth in a failed attempt to stop the superstitious myth of not saying it.

No nudity in Love in the First Degree but there's a few sexy scenes, videos of which are available below.

Offensive Behaviour (NZ)

Over-the-top low budget comedy that has a rather mild attempt at being offensive. Struggling filmmaker Quentin (Richard Allom Cosgrove) can't get his dud of a movie funded even after promising to blow a funder so he comes up with the idea to make a porno but the only people he knows are his long suffering girlfriend Debbie (Yvonne Dyson) and porn-obsessed roommate Clarke (Fraser Jackson). They reluctantly agree to star in the movie and end up falling for one another. Sister Mary Pious (Janice Gray) is dragged back into her previous life of crime when she is offered half a million to kill a scummy debtor. She decides to get her gay hairdresser son Nigel (David Sheard) to finally become the man she always wanted and get him to kill the debtor but it doesn't go well. Also in the same building fighting lovers Bernadette (Sera Kerr) and Jason (Aaron Bloomfield) come across a dead neighbour and that's only the beginning of their troubles. Silly movie that's trying to make you laugh while trying to be offensive and fails at both. The type of movie I would've thought was genius at 20 but now think is edgelord bullshit. Ooof...

No nudity in Offensive Behaviour but there's an underwear scene from Yvonne Dyson. How can you be offensive without female nudity?

One Perfect Day

Drama about Tommy (Dan Spielman) who is studying music in London but finds that his great opus called 'One Perfect Day' will be even better with the sounds of the world. When Tommy's sister Emma (Abbie Cornish) dies of a drug overdose, Tommy comes back to Melbourne and is consoled by his girlfriend Alysse (Leeanna Walsman) but they break up when he finds out Alysse had given Emma the drugs that killed her. Both Tommy and Alysse get in with crooked music manager Hector (Andrew Howard) with Tommy becoming a hit as a DJ as he completes his opus in honour of his sister while Alysse spirals out-of-control on drugs supplied by Hector and his crew. Not bad movie that's trying for something a bit different in the teen drama genre and doesn't skirt around the influence of the drug scene in dance music. But it's focus is a little muddled and probably the reason why it didn't really find an audience.

No nudity in One Perfect Day but there's some videos from the movie here.

Oyster Farmer

Drama about Jack (Alex O'Loughlin) who performs a robbery in the city and decides to hide out in the Hawkesbury River. While there he gets a job as an oyster fisherman. While there he tries to fit in, Jack falls for post office worker Pearl (Diana Glenn) and waits for the money he stole to turn up. Barely remember this movie.

Diana Glenn shows her breasts and briefly her bottom during a sex scene.

Peaches

Drama about Steph (Emma Lung) and her adopted mother Jude (Jacqueline McKenzie) who have come into a crisis point in their relationship. Jude decided to adopt baby Steph after her mother and best friend Jass (Samantha Healy) died in a car accident. After turning 18, Steph does what everyone in town does and gets a job at the local peach cannery but she also wants to find out more about her mother but Jude is reluctant to say much. While at her job, Steph meets supervisor Alan (Hugo Weaving) who was in a relationship with Jude when the accident occurred but they are now estranged. Steph and Alan begin a relationship which will cause a ruction between her and Jude and set Steph onto a different path for life. OK drama with the usual good acting from the usual suspects plus the emergence of a new talent in Emma Lung. The movie's story is a bit seen-it-all before but that's not too grating.

Nudity from Emma Lung plus Jacqueline McKenzie and Samantha Healy perform a fan dance although they have stickers over their nipples.

Roll

Crime comedy short where talented Aussie Rules football Matt (Toby Malone) comes to Perth from the country to try out in the big league and is about to have a night he won't forget thanks to his dopey cousin Vito (Mike Frencham). Vito is doing a drop-off for mob boss Tiny (John Batchelor) while being followed by cops (Marcus Graham, David Ngoombujarra and undercover cop Tasma Walton) who are waiting to bust him and then Tiny after the drop-off. Along the way Matt has his gear stolen by desperate thief Jesse (Renee Newman-Storen) who feels guilty and becomes a part of their night. As Vito dilly-dallies about town with a bag a cash that everyone is following and getting nervous about his next move until it leads to a showdown where Matt's skill will be put to the test. Wacky comedy that throws everything at the wall for it's meager 45 minutes to see what sticks and the answer is some, not all. There's more going on in this movie than most 90 minutes movies, not all of it worth the time but the movie keeps interest throughout despite very few laughs.

No nudity in Roll but there's a few scenes of interest found below.

Shot of Love
aka Dope

Adelaide-made drama set during the high profile trial of two cops who are accused of shooting a star Indigenous footballer, a trial which is fascinating the city. Laura (Anastasia Seis) is on a desperate search for love and may have found the one in Russell (Nathan Dean Ramsay) who is good friends with Laura's best friend and they both may have been involved in the shooting. Then there is the drug dealer who wants to go up in the world and steals a fair amount of drugs to help out his junkie girlfriend and this triggers a couple of thugs who will do anything to get it back. Highly ambitious movie about addiction (drugs, love, TV, criminal trials) that is for the most part very good but is let down by the Tarantino-esque plot strand which seems out of place with the rest of the movie. The movie is lead by an excellent performance from Anastasia Seis in her one and only role.

Extensive nudity from Anastasia Seis including full frontal nudity.

Somersault

Drama about teenager Heidi (Abbie Cornish) who runs away from home after being caught with her mother's boyfriend. Heidi runs to the mountains where she finds shelter by sleeping with various tourists until she comes across local Joe (Sam Worthington) who takes an interest in her but has his own troubles. She also finds a welcoming place with hotel owner Irene (Lynette Curran) who is missing her jailed son. Over time, Heidi and Joe's relationship develops but it also runs into problems which will lead to Heidi causing more problems for herself. Not bad drama that won all the awards in its year and is spurred on by break-out performances from Cornish and Worthington. First feature length movie from director Cate Shortland who'll become a fixture in the near future particularly with her German movies.

Extensive nudity from Abbie Cornish. I noticed that the videos needed updating so new ones are available below. I've also made a few collages. Sadly Somersault hasn't had a HD release of any note. You can find previous collages from Somersault here.

Strange James

No budget psychological thriller where James (Justin Greenaway) is a typical teenager going out with his friends and enjoying life despite having to deal with his psychotic stepfather Gary (Mark Withers). Coming home late one night, James barely escapes Gary on a rampage and in the morning his mother Karen (Jenny Blake) and sister Tessa (Meredith Barnes) have packed up and are urging James to pack a bag and come with them on-the-run from Gary. They arrive in Canberra and things seem OK in their new surroundings except that James hasn't made friends with anyone and seems withdrawn even with the threat of Gary seems long over. Months later James is getting ready to do an oral presentation only for a man in a clown mask and shotgun to burst in and hold the class hostage. And James is about to find out that his worst nightmare has only just begun. OK attempt at making a feature length movie with no budget, first time actors and limited skills in writing and directing. There's some interesting ideas but there's a 15 minute bit about propaganda that bogs the movie down badly. It's a mess that a few more drafts might've cleaned up better but there's some good stuff here. The ending is similar to Shutter Island although done 6 years earlier.

Tom White

Grim drama from Melbourne social realist director Alkinos Tsilimidos. Tom White (Colin Friels) is a successful architect when all of a sudden he is hit with a mental illness which makes him withdraw from his wife Helen (Rachael Blake) and kids. He turns to the streets where he meets a number of people who all live on the fringe of society and he tries to survive the best he can. Tough going in this drama with a great performance from Friels playing against type. He'll work with Tsilimidos again in Blind Company.

Very brief nudity from Loene Carmen and Angela Punch McGregor.

Under the Radar

Queensland-set comedy thriller from the director of Blurred. Brandon (Nathan Phillips) has an incident while surfing and is forced to work at a mental institution where he befriends a couple of patients Trevor (comedian Steady Eddy) and Adrian (Clayton Watson). After a while Brandon promises break Trevor and Adrian out and to take them to the beach and when he does it sets off an adventure that will include waitress Jo (Chloe Maxwell) and an accidental death which will cause a bunch of gangsters to chase after them. Oddly structured movie where the first 15 minutes starts at the ending, then goes back to the start and continues to go back to the ending before it finally becomes the ending. Otherwise it's basically a straightforward genre movie that's largely forgettable. Also bizarrely has a whole bunch of Melbourne actors although the movie seems to made entirely in Queensland.

No nudity in Under the Radar but there's a collages and a video of Chloe Maxwell available here.

The Widower

Another musical drama from the makers of One Night the Moon. This time it's about recently widowed Neville (Chris Haywood) who desperately misses his late wife Mary (Frances Rings) to the point that it starts to affect his health. He is helped by his son (Matt Dyall) who has memories of his parents too. Occasionally a song plays out over the 55 minutes and that's about it. Nowhere near as good as One Night the Moon and the one noticeable song is appalling and just starts describing stuff that's happening on the screen after a while. Haywood gives it his usual all but there's not much else to recommend it.

Nudity from Frances Rings in a couple of scenes which you can find below.

The usual list of movies with nothing to cap includes the AC/DC obsessed comedy that couldn't afford their music Thunderstruck, romantic drama starring Giovanni Ribisi Love's Brother, Tasmanian short drama Cable, comedy Strange Bedfellows that was ripped off by Adam Sandler, the first Murray Whelan telemovie Stiff, ABC telemovie Loot, sci-fi movies The Follow and Lost: Black Earth, dramas Little Lies and Orange Love Story, low budget thrillers Crash Test and Rapid Fear and Canadian co-production Oblivion. There's also some New Zealand movies with nothing to cap including Her Majesty, 1nite, Flatmates Wanted and Fijian co-production The Land Has Eyes.

I wasn't able to find the following movies: Brizbin Boy Canberra Girl, Crimes of the Heart, Die blaue Grenze, Las llaves de la independencia, Lullaby, Meaning, Mothers Little Murderer, Not About AJ, PictoCrime, Queen of Hearts, Right Here Right Now, Scary Legends, Sleep-Paralysis, Soul Traces: The Introduction, Southern Cross, Suburban Boys, Tea!, This Bitch Called Home and Who Is My Enemy. The following New Zealand movies I was unable to find: Gupta vs Gordon, Murmurs and Spooked although all three seem to be available in very out-of-print and highly expensive DVDs.

2005 looks like being a similar year to 2004 although there could be a few more movies listed but maybe not enough for a third update.
