Australian/New Zealand movies: 2008 part 3

The final update for 2008 features decent debut nudity from Teresa Palmer in Restraint and Jessica Marais in Two Fists, One Heart plus some good nude scenes in Salvation, Takoyaki City and Ten Empty. Also featured is the first ever movie Margot Robbie appeared in: Vigilante.

2008

Ozferatu

Low budget horror movie where three couples are given an exclusive dinner at a house in the middle-of-nowhere by a bunch of oddballs. The couples wonder why they have been invited for the evening as they don't know one another and it turns out that the oddballs are a bunch of cannibal vampires and they are the ones having a feast. After bumping off the doctor and making a meal of his wife, the others try to escape the house only to find there is no escape. But before the feast, the oddballs are going to play with their food. Pretty low rent stuff, an interesting set-up but no idea how to make the movie interesting beyond that so we end up with numerous thwarted escape attempts and a bunch of scenes where the oddballs are just teasing those invited before they feast on them. Probably the best thing about the movie is the title and even then there's only a tentative link to it. Might've worked better as a comedy.

No nudity in Ozferatu but I've made a video from the movie which you can find below.

Playing for Charlie

Drama about a talented junior rugby union player Tony (Jared Daperis) who is on the verge of playing for the state of Victoria except he has a major issue that may stop that from happening. He has to look after his baby sister because his MS suffering mother Paula (Jodie Rimmer) works nights but that is when the Victorian squad trains. It's hard enough to make the team if you are not from a private school but this may end any hope he has. Tony is not going to die wondering so he tries his best with the help of his shonky half brother and his dedicated school coach Joe (Shane Connor) who wants him to succeed. OK movie with a good story and solid performances, probably the first Australian movie about rugby union and its focus on a state where it's not prominently played in Victoria is an interesting choice (more of a New South Wales/Queensland sport). An early role for Rhiannon Fish playing a friend of Tony's.

No nudity in Playing for Charlie but there's a brief underwear scene featuring New Zealand actress Jodie Rimmer available here.

Restraint

Thriller about two lovers Ron (Travis Fimmel) and Dale (Teresa Palmer) who are fugitives from the law and end up at a house inhabited by the agoraphobic Andrew (Stephen Moyer). They decide to hole up at the house holding Andrew hostage as they rummage around his hoarder style house that are full of remnants of a previous relationship Andrew had and laments that it's over. A power struggle for the loyalty of Dale breaks out between Ron and Andrew after he offers Ron and Dale a sum of money that can only be gotten with the help of Andrew's lost love, who remarkably looks like Dale. Ron is greedy and the police are closing in but who really has control of the situation. Not a bad three hander where the power dynamic shifts between the captors and captive although the ending feels like it goes too far in the unbelievable direction.

A few decent nude scenes from Teresa Palmer plus an extended scene off the DVD.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from Restraint here. A preview is below.

Salvation

Second last Paul Cox movie, a drama about Barry (Bruce Myles) who visits sex worker Irina (Natalia Novikova) who is a Russian immigrant and it changes his life. Barry is married to prominent TV evangelist Gloria (Wendy Hughes) who runs Barry's life so he finds comfort and his faith again through his visits to Irina and after a while they fall for one another. Irina's pimp Anton (Alex Menglet) starts hassling her then steals her passport and Barry decides to go the extra mile to save Irina from Anton's influence. A bit more straightforward than the usual Paul Cox movie and the movie basically turns into a noir thriller in the third act. Has his usual themes of art and love but they are less prominent here. Probably ends up being one of his more accessible movies. Not bad but it's basically a dressed up 'hooker with a heart of gold' movie and it's stabs at TV evangelism are pretty rote.

Natalia Novikova shows her breasts while lying on a couch.

Scorched

Channel 9 telemovie set in 2012 where there's extreme water restrictions and an indefinite drought in Australia. Then the bushfires start and the suburbs of Sydney come under threat and we follow a number of people who are either working to stop the fires or their homes or lives are under threat. OK drama that never really goes beyond the usual clichés.

No nudity in Scorched but this was a multimedia event so there was a bunch of vlogs done by a peripheral character in the movie played by Kate Bell. In a couple of them she is wearing a bikini and I've made a video which is available below.

A Song of Good (NZ)

Drama about Gary (Gareth Reeves) who lives with his sister Rachel (Danielle Cormack), father Ron (Ian Mune) and her son. One day he breaks into a house and when found out by the resident, he ends up raping them. Gary is shocked by what he's done so he tries to go straight including getting a job as a burger joint. But it becomes increasingly hard for him to escape his past. A more 'polished' effort than the director's previous movie Christmas but definitely still a whole lot of depression porn. It does have an interesting ending though that almost redeems it.

The Square

Tense thriller where construction manager Raymond (David Roberts) is having an affair with the younger Carla (Claire van der Boom) using the excuse of walking their dogs to meet up. One day Carla spies her tow truck owning Smithy (Anthony Hayes) hiding a bag of cash in the laundry and when curiosity gets the better of Carla and she hatches a plan to steal the money, burn down the house to hide the money's absence and run off with Raymond. Easy! Raymond enlists the help of firebug Billy (Joel Edgerton) and his girlfriend Lily (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) to burn the house down and everything goes to plan until it turns out that Smithy's mother didn't go to the Christmas party they were using as an alibi and she perishes in the fire despite Ray attempting to call it off. Things spiral out-of-control fast as Billy wants more money for killing someone, someone else is blackmailing Ray and Smithy's friend Leonard (Brendan Donoghue) seems to know a whole lot more about it than he should. When Leonard accidentally dies, Ray buries him where they are about put to concrete but it's never the right time to finish the concreting job. Then more people find out like his friend Jake (Peter Phelps) and Smithy is getting mighty suspicious and closer to working it out. Ray has gotten himself into a mess he's going to have to wallow in and it's not getting better. Decent thriller from the Edgerton brothers (Nash Edgerton's feature directorial debut after some popular shorts) where the lead character just keeps burying himself deeper into trouble but somehow keeps his head above water until he can't any longer. Lots of twists, maybe too many but the movie is densely layered and there's always something coming up to put Ray on the back foot. There's even a shark in the river...

No nudity in The Square but I've made a new HD video from the movie featuring a couple of sexy scenes from Claire van der Boom which is available below. Previous collages and a deleted scene are available here.

Takoyaki City

Only been able to find a 10 minute segment of this winner of the Optus 180 competition but it does contain a couple of nude scenes which makes me wonder if there's any more in the rest of the movie.

Both Brigette Paroissien and Danger 5's Amanda Simons have brief nudity in the telemovie.

The Tender Hook
aka The Boxer and the Bombshell

1920s set drama where Iris (Rose Byrne) is in a relationship with English alcohol bootlegger McHeath (Hugo Weaving) but he treats her like crap. Then McHeath introduces Iris to his new boxing protégé Art (Matthew Le Nevez) and she falls head over heels for him and they have a clandestine relationship. But when McHeath asks Art to throw a bout so he can get a later title bout, Art has a decision to make which may unveil that he's having it off with Iris. Major flop on release despite it's two well-known leads not helped by the movie being not that great, another boring love triangle with no real passion or consequence.

Brief nudity from Pia Miranda including a nip slip.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from The Tender Hook here. A preview is below.

Ten Empty

Dysfunctional family melodrama where Elliot (Daniel Frederiksen) arrives back in the family home in Adelaide after 10 years only to walk back straight into the hell he left. Not much has changed in town including with old friends and lovers and he's still arguing with his father Ross (Geoff Morrell). He hooks back up with old flame Bernadette (Blazey Best) while his brother Brett (Tom Budge) has been diagnosed with a mental illness just like his mother and he's become suicidal and withdraws from the world. Elliot is going to wonder why he bothered coming home again. By-the-numbers dysfunctional family melodrama, people yell, hash it out and something big happens but nothing really changes. Boy there's a lot of yelling in this movie.

Blazey Best shows her breasts during a sex scene.

You can find a synopsis with collages and videos from Ten Empty here. A preview is below.

Two Fists, One Heart

Perth-made drama about an amateur boxer Anthony (Daniel Amalm) who has a tumultuous relationship with his father/coach Joe (Ennio Fantastichini) to the extent that the boxer wants to take a backward step away from boxing, much to his father's annoyance. After a bust up between the two, Anthony leaves home and Joe compensates by training a hot-headed boxer Nico (Rai Fazio) and even lets him live in Anthony's old room. Anthony falls for Kate (Jessica Marais) and they live together with her comedian brother Tom (Tim Minchin) but she has a problem with Anthony's propensity for violence and dumps him after he gets involved in a street brawl. After Nico gets a better offer from a rival trainer, Anthony and Joe find a way to get back together. Pretty good drama with some good boxing scenes, nothing special but a fairly easy watch.

Nudity from Jessica Marais in her debut movie.

You can find a synopsis with collages and videos from Two Fists, One Heart here. A preview is below.

Valentine's Day

ABC telemovie where Ben Valentine (Rhys Muldoon) gets in trouble with the law in a small Victoria country town and he is strangely mistaken for a famous Australian Rules footballer of the same name (don't they have TV in the country). He is sentenced to community service which he does by coaching the struggling local team who are about to be booted out of the competition or forced to merge with a prominent rival who will envelope them. Well Ben is reluctant at first but then gets right into the coaching role and life in town including getting into a relationship with local girl Mel (Freya Stafford). Can Ben get the team to win their next few games and save the town's only joy? Well they have to beat their despised rivals in the final game to save themselves. Ticks off every cliché in the book but as far as no fuss entertainment goes it's alright without setting the world alight. Still can't get over how no-one knew what a famous footballer looks like...

No nudity in Valentine's Day but there's a sexy scene featuring Freya Stafford which you can find collages and a video of here.

Vigilante

Gold Coast set action thriller where a balaclava wearing man in black stalks the streets putting criminals and layabouts in their place. Previously, a self-made millionaire Luke (Robert Díaz) has just proposed to his girlfriend Cassandra (Margot Robbie on debut) and celebrates with a late night picnic at a park. They are met by a bunch of hooligans who decide to attack them, beating the man to an inch of his life and killing (and possibly raping) Cassandra. Luke is devastated then he is encouraged by Alex (Kazuya Wright) and his love of The Punisher and also by his physical therapist/martial arts instructor to get revenge on society. He ultimately gets his revenge on his attackers, one of whom Mako (Christian Radford) is unrealistically psychotic. Low rent action thriller that flagrantly rips off better movies (mostly The Punisher) although it does have some OK action scenes but that doesn't make up for some pretty awful acting. Hard-to-believe that Robbie would go on to be one of the biggest star in the world after this poor movie.

No nudity in Vigilante but there's a few sexy scenes available in collage and video form here.

The Ruins

I've decided to make a brief mention of this American horror movie which is technically Australian, it was made here but barely has anything else that identifies it as Australian. There's a bit of nudity from Laura Ramsey and some sexy scenes from Jena Malone which you can find collages and videos of here.

As always there's a bunch of movies that had nothing to cap including war drama The Tumbler, crime thrillers Cactus and Punishment, crime dramas Blue Lies and Mates, female led drama Four of a Kind, male led drama Men's Group, depressing drama Bitter & Twisted, Project Greenlight movie The View from Greenhaven, Indian co-production Singh Is Kinng, war drama Broken Sun, international drama The Children of Huang Shi, surfing mockumentary Kookman, low budget comedy Dead Man Drinking, gay romantic comedy Performance Anxiety, shore leave drama Three Blind Mice, docudrama Tao of the Traveller, last man on Earth drama 1 and 0 nly, mystery telemovies Emerald Falls and The Informant, drama about the Tasmanian cannibal The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce, Cambodian horror co-production The Red Sense and animated movie $9.99.

There's also a number of New Zealand movies with nothing to cap including oddball comedy Dean Spanley, comedy Show of Hands, dramas Taking the Waewae Express and Second-Hand Wedding, earthquake thriller Aftershock, kids movie The Sword, the Wand and the Stone, comedy Flat Life and there is brief nudity from extras in the Vincent Ward directed historical docudrama Rain of the Children but not really worth capping.

I wasn't able to find the following movies: Addiction, Among Dead Men, Cannibal Suburbia, Crushed, Dead Country, Dream Life, Green Fire Envy, Hard Heat, Heron's Story, The Horror Vault, Katusha, The Life o'Simon Lovely Scary Wolves, Lovers, M, Offing David, Onshinfutsu, Pink Teddy, The Plex, The Project, Space Pimp, Sticks & Stones, Under a Red Moon, Verite, Zombie Outbreak Response Team and Zyco Rock. I also wasn't able to find the New Zealand movies Apron Strings and Eyes of Love.

Australian/New Zealand movies: 2008 part 2

Just a little bit of nudity in this update including extensive extra nudity from a body double in I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer and some good scenes in the sex farce Mortal Fools and surfing drama Newcastle.

2008

Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger

Coming-of-age comedy where Esther Blueberger (Danielle Catanzariti) is an outsider at her all girl's school while it's not much better at home with her parents Grace (Essie Davis) and Osmond (Russell Dykstra) with her only ally being her equally weird twin brother Jacob (Christian Byers). Then Esther meets Sunni (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and everything changes for the better. She skips school and starts going to the public school with Sunni as a 'Swedish exchange student' and starts hanging out with Sunni's friends. She manages to trick her parents and her school and even becomes friendly with Sunni's mother Mary (Toni Collette). But as Esther's fortunes rise, Sunni becomes jealous and things begin to unravel between them which will lead to tragedy but also a new beginning. Strange movie with a weird tone that is supposed to be for teenage girls but also has a weird way of exploring teenage sexuality that might go over it's audience's heads. The plot goes down some weird roads and eventually ends with a needless tragedy. There's a few laughs and Catanzariti is good in the lead but this is a odd movie.

No nudity in Hey Hey It's Esther Blueberger but there's a scene where Toni Collette dances at a strip club which I've remade in slightly better quality and you can find below. Previous collages are available here.

The Horseman

Queensland-made revenge thriller where Christian (Peter Marshall) decides to overcome his pain for the loss of his daughter Jesse (Hannah Levien) by torturing and killing everyone involved with the porn movie she made where she was given the heroin that killed her. Using his job as a pest controller to help get access to the video's participants, Christian cuts his way through suppliers, directors and actors until he gets down to Derek (Brad McMurray), who looks to be behind her death. Along the way, he picks up a hitchhiker Alice (Caroline Marohasy) who is running away from her own problems. Very thin story but the real highlight of The Horseman is it's fights which are frequent and very well done, better than most Hollywood productions and quite brutal at times. A very good movie with the only thing stopping it from being a great movie is the lack of a story.

No nudity in The Horseman but I've made a video from the movie which you can find here.

I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer

Horror comedy where a killer dressed as a batter returns to Australia to pick off the members of his school cricket team who bullied him mercilessly. In an idea so dumb it can only happen in a horror movie, the remaining members of the team are brought together to be protected in a remote country house by the investigating detectives including a woman from Scotland Yard. Wouldn't you know it, the killer finds them and uses weapons made from cricket equipment to slaughter the remaining members of the team one-by-one. For a movie that has a perfectly silly concept and a decent parody name, the movie is surprisingly devoid of comedy unless you consider oft-used sexist and gay jokes as the height of comedy. Not even funny, ridiculous deaths. And the horror side of things is by-the-number boredom, everyone is told to stay in the house but then they just leave one-by-one and no-one seems to notice or care when they go missing until they bother to do a head count. Should've been way funnier than this disappointment.

There's is nudity in the movie in a body double shower scene performed by Ariana Starr which should've been played for laughs but is nothing but washing of her body. I've also included the complete version that was included on the DVD which goes for over two minutes and features further nudity.

You can find a synopsis with videos from I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer here. A preview is below.

Jinx Sister (NZ)

Drama about a woman Laura (Sara Wiseman) who has moved to LA to get away from her past but after waking up in an alley drunk and smelling of sex, she wonders where her life is going. So Laura goes home and tries to reconnect with her sister Mairie (Rachel Nash) but struggles to do so as she believes she is a jinx because of past events (including her possibly causing her mother's death). She checks into a hotel where she meets Sam (Jarod Rawiri) who she begins a relationship with although it seems distant at first. Mairie decides to seek her out and they reconnect and Laura then moves in with Mairie and her family. Then Mairie's pregnancy has complications which Laura believes it is her fault and has to decide whether she will run away again or stay and break her jinx. Solid but fairly undemanding drama with a good lead performance from Sara Wiseman. Not much to the movie but works well within it's limitations although I think Laura's rise to responsibility comes out-of-nowhere just to tie the movie up.

Brief nudity from Sara Wiseman.

You can find a synopsis with collages and videos from Jinx Sister here. A preview is below.

Kissing Paris

Drama about a Melbourne woman Claire (Natalie Vella) who decides to leave her partner Andrew (John Forman) to do what she's always wanted to do: spend an indefinite amount of time living in Paris. Inspired by letters she has from someone who has done the same, she lives in Paris and decides to check out the sights, occasionally meeting men who she has brief dalliances with but not really connecting with anyone. She takes a job a translator to help extend her time in Paris then one day she meets Paris (Remi Jaladieu) on a train and connects with him but he leaves to catch another train and Claire loses him in the confusing tunnels. She decides to wait at the station in the vain hope of finding him again. Not much to this movie, a lot of waiting around for something to happen coupled with an occasional reading of one of the letters she has with her. Doesn't really go anywhere and ends in a whimper that feels like her over a year long stay in Paris was for not much at all.

Natalie Vella briefly shows her breasts. A video is available below.

Lake Mungo

Fictional documentary about the death of Alice Palmer (Talia Zucker), who drowned herself in a local dam. Her family struggle to get on with life and then her brother Mathew (Martin Sharpe) sees that Alice makes an appearance in a video he shot at the family home then she also starts appearing in photos from various people. This gives the family hope she's still alive, particularly her mother June (Rosie Traynor) who enlists the help of a psychic Ray Keremy (Steve Jodrell) to find Alice. It turns out that the truth is a bit more complicated than that. A well done movie that uses the documentary format extremely well to create an interesting mystery. There's some genuinely strange moments that work and apart from a few minor missteps, mostly involving a dalliance with sleazy neighbours, it is a very fine movie.

Brief nudity from Tamara Donnellan in a grainy sex tape.

You can find a synopsis with HD videos from Lake Mungo here. A preview is below.

Long Weekend
aka Nature's Grave

Remake of the 1978 environmental horror movie, the second and so far last of the Australian movies directed by horror director Jamie Blanks. Peter (Jim Caviezel) and Carla (Claudia Karvan) go for a weekend away to the beach but their marriage is hanging by a thread. At the beach, they bicker and treat the environment with contempt but this ain't no ordinary environment; this one fights back against the couple. The 70s original is quaint and dated now but it had a superb idea ahead of it's time. The remake doesn't quite hit the heights of that movie but the idea is so good that it's hard to stuff it up. Strangely, Caviezel and Karvan would play a couple again in the 2019 terror thriller Infidel, a rare non-Australian outing for Karvan suggesting that it may have been Caviezel's choice to cast her.

No real nudity in Long Weekend but there's a few sexy scenes featuring Claudia Karvan which you can find collages and videos of here.

Malibu Shark Attack

Gold Coast-shot Canadian co-production set on an indistinct Malibu beach while looking like an Australian beach. Shark movie where an underwater earthquake unleashes a tsunami onto Malibu but that's the least of it's problems as it's also brought out supposedly extinct sharks who start attacking the beachgoers and entrap a group of lifeguards in their bungalow. Their only hope are a group of construction workers who have the means to save them but those sharks are real aggressive and love the taste of human flesh. Low-rent cheap looking shark movies are a dime-a-dozen on American TV, this one is no better or worse than the previous one but it does have a strange nastiness when it comes to butchering the sharks which I wasn't expecting. Not very TV friendly...

No real nudity in this movie, a couple of brief side-boob scenes but also Chelan Simmons spends 90% of the movie in a bikini top and shorts playing the usual blonde bimbo and Sonya Salomaa is in a bathing suit. Sadly Peta Wilson is in a singlet for the entire movie. So there's long videos of the two of them from the movie below.

The Map Reader (NZ)

Drama where Michael (Jordan Selwyn) is a shy 16 year-old who lives with his shut-in alcoholic mother Amelia (Rebecca Gibney) and ever since he was a kid, he's been obsessed with maps. This is mainly because he wants to find his father who his mother doesn't give any time to and won't tell him about. With his 'friends', they spy happy-go-lucky blind girl Mary (Bonnie Soper) including while she is in the shower. They are joined by schoolmate Alison (Mikaila Hutchinson), who bares the brunt of sexist gibes from Michael's friends but he pays no mind to them and becomes friends with Alison. One day, Amelia invites Michael and an old friend to dinner who brings her daughter Mary with her and she takes a shine to Michael, so much so that Mary seduces Michael. He tries to be with her but Mary only wants a fling. Alison encourages Michael to see the world and after an incident with her father, she gives him a box full of money and tells him to never come back. A fairly stock-standard coming-of-age story that is mostly effective although the ending is a bit of puzzle which I have no idea what it is going for as the movie is pretty straightforward up until then.

No nudity in The Map Reader but there's a video of Bonnie Soper in the shower almost showing something available here.

Monkey Puzzle
aka Enter the Wild

Low budget drama about five friends Carl (Ben Geurens), Dylan (Ryan Johnson), Pippa (Ella Scott Lynch), Zac (Socratis Otto) and Toni (Billie Rose Prichard) who go on a hiking trip to find a tree affectionately named 'Monkey Puzzle' because monkeys find it impossible to climb it's bizarre make-up. Well along the way they lose the map, have their food eaten by animals and that's when they have to survive their own stupidity and long-held grievances. OK movie but the best that could be said about it is that at least it's not a horror movie which these type of movies tend to be.

Anyway in 2018, Monkey Puzzle was rebadged as an American horror movie called Enter The Wild where the only difference was the title. I wonder how many horror fans were fooled by this...

No nudity in Monkey Puzzle but there's a few videos from the movie available here.

Mortal Fools

Sex farce loosely based on A Midsummer Night's Dream where couple Helen (Kaitlyn Cox) and Alex (Charles Kevin) host a housewarming party in their new palatial house and invite Helen's ex Dimi (Jai Koutrae) and struggling actress Jen (Melanie Armstrong) in an attempt to get them together and they also invite gay couple Nigel (Zach Lee) and Eddie (Dallas Palmer). Meanwhile, angels Danny (Lindsay Moss) and Suzanne (Sarah Campbell-Lambert) with magical avatar Robin (Amber Gokken) turn up to observe their behaviour without being seen by the party until Danny wants to cause a bit of mayhem. Well Dimi and Jen don't click so Danny gets Robin to zap Alex and make him fall in love with Jen which he promptly does in front of Helen and all hell breaks loose. The party goes from one hook-up to the next, mixing couples both straight and gay all the while disgusting Suzanne until Danny accidentally zaps her into reality and then everyone wants her and she barely escapes before an orgy can break out. Can normality be restored or is something else at play? Strange movie that goes nowhere for the first 25 minutes and then once the sex farce begins, the movie goes from 0-100 and is all sorts of fun before a bizarre third act twist which makes little sense and then ends in the most baffling way. Probably at it's best when sex breaks out as the rest is a bit of a bore.

Nudity from Melanie Armstrong and Kaitlyn Cox.

Newcastle

Coming-of-age surfing movie set in Newcastle where teenage Jesse (Lachlan Buchanan) who has the ability to become a pro-surfer but is reminded by his older brother Victor's (Reshad Strik) failure that he has a long way to go. But after a weekend away with friends which ends in tragedy, it puts into perspective what his future may be. Pretty standard stuff here except there's a homosexual overtone to the movie which is rare for the surfer movie that is also embellished by surprisingly plentiful male nudity throughout the movie. It also has the most bizarre masturbation scene I've ever seen because I swear to you, the character wanks to surfing.

There's not just male nudity in Newcastle as there's a fairly decent nude scene from Debra Ades as she has sex with a bloke. She also has a nice bikini scene plus Rebecca Breeds also has some bikini scenes.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from Newcastle here. A preview is below.

No Through Road

Perth-made suburban thriller where Richard (James Helm) is a photographer who arrives home after a day of taking photos and finds a local drug addict Samantha (Megan Palinkas) taking refuge in his house. He reluctantly decides to help her but then a group of menacing men arrive on his doorstep looking for her. Richard holds them off but the men can sense that she's around so he enlists the help of his friend Ned (George Shevtsov) as a go-between to help solve the situation. But when the men execute Ned, things become desperately serious for both Richard and Samantha as they fight for their lives. Surprisingly efficient thriller that's a bit clunky because of it's budget but is fairly tense throughout.

Sort-of nudity from Megan Palinkas as we briefly see the side of her breast as she tends to a wound. I've remade the video in HD below.

Acolytes

Thriller where three school kids Mark (Sebastian Gregory), Chasely (Hanna Mangan-Lawrence) and James (Joshua Payne) play hooky from school and while walking through the local forest they find a dead body. Instead of going to the police they decide to find the killer themselves and come across Ian (Joel Edgerton) who turns out to be a serial killer. In an incredibly dumb move, they decide to extort the serial killer into killing Gary (Michael Dorman), a man who has been tormenting the trio including assaulting the two boys and is just out of jail. Not a bad movie although the story become less credible the longer it goes but there's enough going on to keep it interesting. Debut movie for Bella Heathcote as a Norwegian backpacker who is terrorised by the serial killer.

Brief nudity from Belinda McClory while in the bath.

Baz Luhrmann directed epic I haven't watched and maybe never will and I might be one of the few Australians that hasn't seen it. Weird fact: the movie was filmed twice which doubled the budget of the movie from $40 million to $80 million, most of which was covered by the weird tax break the government had for local movies at the time. Also re-edited into the TV series Faraway Downs which was released last year.

No real nudity in the movie but there's is a scene where Nicole Kidman shows some side-boob and maybe more.

You can find HD videos from Australia here. A preview is below.

Belladonna

Polish co-production set for the most part in Melbourne and follows two narratives set in different times that are related. Luke (Todd MacDonald) is a doctor who is suffering from insomnia which is most likely caused by the pressure of his upcoming nuptials to Katherine (Kate Kendall). When he does get some sleep, he is having dreams set in the distant past about a Polish woman Jadwiga (Katia Mazurek) who is torn between her ailing husband and her lover. As his dreams unravel, Katherine is lost in preparations for the wedding while Luke is just feeling lost. Then he has a patient, Amelia (Katie Jean Harding), who looks strikingly like Jadwiga and he discovers that she has breast cancer. This brings him closer to Amelia and puts his marriage in jeopardy. Very artful look at a man trying to find meaning in his life during a chaotic period. Something interesting is going on here, maybe not wholly realised but seeing Luke is looking for something more in his life than the usual stuff and finding it in a non-sexual relationship with a woman he barely knows, is something you don't see often in movies.

Brief nudity from Polish actress Katia Mazurek plus Katie Jean Harding has a scene where she's covering her breasts with her arms. For much better nudity from Katie Jean check out the short Tender.

You can find a synopsis with collages and videos from Belladonna here. A preview is below.

The Black Balloon

Drama about a teenage boy Thomas (Rhys Wakefield) who is trying to deal with the circumstances he's living in. His family has just moved to a new town for his father's (Erik Thomson) job and his mother Maggie (Toni Collette) is pregnant with her third child while her other son Charlie (Luke Ford) is autistic and a handful for them all. At school, Thomas meets Jackie (Gemma Ward) and they fall for one another but Charlie becomes a problem which could put a potential relationship in jeopardy. Decent coming-of-age drama although I get the feeling the way Charlie's autism is handled might look a bit different now as it's very full on throughout the movie.

No nudity in The Black Balloon but I've made a few collages and HD videos from the movie which are available here.

Bloodspit

Low budget Troma distributed horror comedy where a family of vampires and weirdos headed by Count Blaughspich (Duke Hendrix) is hunted by a vampire hunter Dr. Ludvic (Leon Fish). Or something... The plot is pretty immaterial as the movie is just one revolting scene followed by another. The movie starts with Lloyd Kaufman dying on the toilet and the filmmakers eating his shit and it just never recovers from there. Deliberately shit and proud of it.

The only nudity is from an actress named Candy Whorehole playing a dead body but I've made a few videos from the movie which you can find below.

Crooked Business

Gold Coast based crime caper that owes a lot to Guy Ritchie. Two dopes Elmo (Teo Gebert) and Stevie (Firass Dirani) try to make fast money by selling fake watches. Then they sell to the wrong person and it sets off a series of events that piss off the English gang, the Chinese Triads, the Jewish gangs and the bikies. From the writer of Gettin' Square, not quite as good as that movie but playing in a similar toy box.

No nudity in Crooked Business but there's some collages and videos from the movie available here.

Death Bet

West Australian martial arts thriller about Justin (Kenny Low) who has returned back to his hometown for the quiet life but his past will never leave him. He takes a job with local scumbag Harris (Dean McAskil) who runs an exclusive bar that hosts underground cage fighting and trades in human trafficking. The real reason Justin is back is to be with his long-time lover Leelu (Tracey Baker) but she's become beholden to Harris after she kills her abusive lover. Justin doesn't want to fight but he's drawn into cage fighting at the insistence of Harris's offsider Sam (Kurtis Wakefield) who markets him as the Asian Sensation and Justin sees this as the only way he can help Leelu escape from Harris's clutches. By-the-numbers martial arts movie, not a whole lot of action but enough to get by and a pretty simple plot that never stretches beyond anything too taxing.

Hannah Moltoni shows her breasts during a sex scene.

Disgrace

Drama based on a book by Australian/South African author J.M. Coetzee that is set entirely in South Africa (although some of the movie was made in Australia). David (John Malkovich) is a professor at a Cape Town university who begins an affair with one of his students Melanie (Antoinette Engel) which sours after he takes it too far and causes him to lose his job. He decides not to fight the decision so he goes and lives with his estranged daughter Lucie (Jessica Haines) on her hobby farm. When the farm is robbed and Lucie is raped by a gang of black bandits, it puts David in the middle of a situation that he did not expect particularly when it turns out one of the rapists is the brother of the new wife of the co-habitant on the land. Good little movie that gets into the intricacies of post-Apartheid politics of South Africa that is bolstered by an excellent lead performance from Malkovich.

Brief nudity from South African actresses Jessica Haines, Antoinette Engel and Natalie Becker.

Previous collages from Disgrace can be found here. I've made new HD videos which are available below.

Dying Breed

Horror movie set in Tasmania where Irish zoologist Nina (Mirrah Foulkes) is convinced that the apparently extinct Tasmania tiger is still around and decides to find out for herself with her boyfriend Matt (Leigh Whannel) who gets his friend Jack (Nathan Phillips) to finance the expedition and he brings along his girlfriend Rebecca (Melanie Vallejo). Not welcomed by the locals, they head off and quickly find themselves in over their heads as it seems that some of the locals are descendants of the 'Pieman', a famous cannibal and they are continuing his ways, setting their sights on the four. But that's not all they want them for. OK horror movie that has it's limitations thanks to it's low budget but there's an interesting story that mixes two Tasmanian legends together. I do sometimes wonder if Tasmanians are sick of being portrayed the way they are on the screen and recently in TV shows and this movie definitely doesn't help.

Brief nudity from Melanie Vallejo.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from Dying Breed here. A preview is below.

The Eternity Man

Light opera musical set post World War I about Arthur Stace (Grant Doyle) who is a degenerate alcoholic whose sister Myrtle (Christa Hughes) runs the local illegal brothel. Well, he finds religion and sobers up and then starts to spread hope around Sydney by writing the word 'Eternity' in chalk around town particularly at places struck with debauchery. This becomes a symbol for the city of Sydney even as he begins to be overwhelmed by his experiences during the war. Directed by Julien Temple of The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle fame (also father of Juno), the music is mostly forgettable and definitely for those who are into musicals, which I aren't.

There's brief nudity from Jean Taylor, Safari Lee and Naomi Spilsbury.

The Gates of Hell

Horror movie where a film crew goes to a remote property that used to be an orphanage to make a cheapie horror movie. Led by the director Kyle (Michael Piccirilli), his assistant Leah (Samantha Noble) and cameraman (Bradley Tomlinson) and starring lovers Dylan (Christian Clark) and Maddy (Amy Beckwith), they begin filming after illegally entering the property and break into the old house which looks great apart from the cobwebs. Inside the house they find an audio tape where someone dictates their last words before committing suicide including saying that he is ashamed of giving up his child. That night as they camp outside, the killings start and as the cast and crew are killed off one by one, the horrifying truth about the place becomes very clear. Even at 69 minutes plus 10 minutes of credits(!), this movie feels too long. All bar one of the cast is dead by 50 minutes then there's an overwrought explanation to why this is happening that still doesn't explain much. There's also another character who turns up for no other reason than to perform a prank and be slaughtered and that seems out of step with the rest of the movie amazingly. Unsurprisingly never released in Australia.

Brief peeks of nudity from Amy Beckwith, most are so brief if you blink, you'll miss it.

You can find a synopsis with a video from The Gates of Hell here. A preview is below.

Australian/New Zealand movies: 2007 part 3

A little bit of nudity in the final update for 2007 with a couple of decent scenes in the moody drama West, satirical comedy Rats and Cats and a few nude scenes in vampire drama A Nocturne. There's also some nudity from foreign actresses in a couple of movies: Romulus, My Father and Unfinished Sky.

2007

A Nocturne

Probably Melbourne indie auteur Bill Mousoulis's most well-known movie thanks to an international release from an unlikely distributor, Troma. Philosophical vampire drama about two vampires only known as X (Vanessa de Largie) and Z (Alex Spears) who roam the streets of Melbourne looking for their next victim. After they trap one, they bring her back to their abandoned warehouse and feast on her with a cannibal who recites arcane poetry Seers (Patrick Boyle) and Vee (HaiHa Le), who they turned into a vampire. For the most part, X and Z live boring, miserable lives but they have a meeting with their French mentor Rola (Jennifer Levy) who tells them that the path they are leading is not the one to the 'transcendence' they are looking for. Dismayed by this, X and Z wander the streets until a tragedy occurs. I know Troma can be esoteric at times with their choices but this movie must've left their fans scratching their head like I am. The film is very miserable, full of philosophical thought mostly sprouted by Seers plus it's bookended by Nietzsche quotes. There's no action or excitement, just misery and an occasional feast. I hesitate to say that this is Mousoulis's most accessible movie but have you read my synopses of his previous movies. His movies are hard to get into.

Vanessa de Largie is nude in three scenes showing full frontal nudity and her bottom. I've remade the videos from the movie in slightly better quality which you can find below.

You can find a synopsis with collages from A Nocturne here.

Vanessa de Largie in A Nocturne

27439kb 1min 28sec 1280x700 (breasts)

Frances Marrington in A Nocturne

16467kb 53sec 1280x700 (blouse ripped open to reveal bra)

Noise

Gripping slow-burn mystery thriller where university student Lavinia (Maia Thomas) walks onto a train after a massacre and miraculously escapes and the killer is not found. A constable Graham (Brendan Cowell) is one of the first to arrive on call and after a bout of extreme tinnitus, he is dispensed out to man an information caravan about the killer in the suburb of Sunshine where he meets an assortment of local weirdos, one of which may be the killer who is taunting them. Decent thriller that has impeccable sound design and horrifying final scene with some decent performances from Cowell and debutant Thomas. It's slow-burning nature actually works to it's benefit and it's mostly suburban setting also plays a part in setting the mood.

No nudity in Noise but there's some brief sexiness from Katie Wall which you can find a video of below. A previous collages is available here.

Katie Wall in Noise

108298kb 2min 21sec 1920x1088 (panties, lengthy)

Plum Role

Second movie from Perth director Zak Hilditch (The Actress) with pretty much the same cast and similar hateful vibe. Drama about Jacob (Matt Hardie), an actor who has snagged a role on a cop drama filming in Sydney. Turns out he's a shitty person who treats women like garbage then one day he picks up Cheryl (Laura Henderson) from a bar and has sex with her then turfs her out in the morning. Well she becomes pregnant which he is not happy with and pushes for an abortion but Cheryl wants the baby which only pisses Jacob off more and causes him to push her over and she falls and miscarries. Problem solved... well, then her brothers come around and give him an ultimatum: they beat him up and he has to get their sister pregnant again or they call the cops on him and say goodbye to his breakout role. Ooof... Incredibly hateful movie to the point where the misogyny is cartoonish and the main plot development is entirely silly. Much prefer The Actress.

Brief nudity from Laura Henderson.

You can find a synopsis with videos from Plum Role here. A preview is below.

Rats and Cats

Satirical comedy about a writer for a trendy magazine Ben (Adam Zwar) who pitches the idea to do a 'where are they now?' story on troubled former actor Darren McWarren (Jason Gann). Ben finds Darren living in the country, lording it up in small town notoriety with his offsider Bruce (Paul Denny) and on-off girlfriend Cindy (Anya Beyersdorf). Darren basically does whatever he wants which impresses the women and pisses off the men and seems to have found a happy balance in his life but is it all a charade? Mildly funny movie that feels like antecedent to the TV show Wilfred which the stars and director would make soon after. Darren is such a silly character that is easy to tear down so it's minimal effort all the way but he does have an interesting relationship with Cindy which could've been explored more.

Both Alexis Porter and Jess Beazley shows their breasts during sex scenes. I've remade the videos from the movie in better quality which you can find below. You can find previous collages from Rats and Cats here.

Razzle Dazzle: A Journey Into Dance

Mockumentary that focuses on a dance class run by Mr. Jonathon (English actor Ben Miller) that wants to win the annual dance contest. The movie follows Mr. Jonathon and various students and their mothers/fathers. While the movie wrings everything it can from it's stereotypical characters, the movie is surprisingly funny with some good performances.

No nudity in Razzle Dazzle: A Journey into Dance but there's a few collages and videos of Kerry Armstrong from the movie available here.

Romulus, My Father

Biographical immigrant drama based on the popular book, the one and only movie directed by actor Richard Roxburgh. Raimond (Kodi Smit-McPhee) lives on a farm with father Romulus (Eric Bana) while his mother Christina (Franka Potente) visits from time-to-time and is always teetering on the edge of depression. Christina lives in Melbourne with Mitru (Russell Dykstra) the brother of his friend Hora (Marton Csokas) where she gives birth to another child but her depression leaves her unable to perform as a mother and she makes an attempt on her life. Raimond keeps going even after his father has a motorcycle accident and lives in abject poverty watching the adults in his life struggle to get by. But things change for him when he goes to a boarding school in Melbourne, both in a good and bad way. Terribly miserable look at a young boy's life set in the not too distant past but through all the misery Raimond keeps on living the best he can and there's even a sort-of happy ending after a loved one dies. Good story but it's a tough watch.

Franka Potente briefly shows her breasts. I've remade the videos from the movie which you can find below. You can find previous collages from Romulus, My Father here.

Storm Warning

First Australian movie from horror director/composer Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend, Valentine). Thriller where city couple Rob (Robert Taylor) and his French wife Pia (Nadia Farès) go on a boating holiday but get caught up in a storm and have to abandon the boat. After a while, they find an empty house that just happens to be a place where someone seems to be growing dope. When the occupants of the house return, Rob and Pia are greeted by a couple of hillbillies Jimmy (David Lyons) and Brett (Mathew Wilkinson), who treat their visitors in the typical hillbilly way. It becomes clear that Rob and Pia are not wanted then Rob's leg is broken so Pia must find a way to get them out of this hellhole. Then the hillbilly's father Poppy (John Brumpton) arrives and then Pia really needs to find a way out. Simple and surprisingly effective little thriller typical of the work of writer Everett de Roche. Farès is very good as the city artist who must do what she can to escape this madness while David Lyons revels in playing a backwater hick. And there's one scene involving a beer bottle and a steel trap that may make you think twice of taking advantage of a woman...

Nadia Fares briefly shows her bottom.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from Storm Warning here. A preview is below.

The Tattooist (NZ)

Thriller where American tattoo artist (Jason Behr) arrives in New Zealand to look at the local tattoo designs that he can study/steal. He comes across Samoan tattooing and he likes what he sees so he steals a haunted tattoo tool that he uses in his own tattoos. Turns out that he has unleashed an angry spirit which kills the people he is tattooing through poisoning and now he's tattooed a girl he likes in Sina (Mia Blake) and it's a race against time to save her. Silly idea that sort of gets away with it with an interesting story but it's nothing special.

Brief nudity from Mia Blake.

You can find a synopsis with collages and HD videos from The Tattooist here. A preview is below.

The Underdog's Tale

Comedy about Eric (Oliver Torr), a man who seems to have it all except he's hiding the fact that he has serious issues. He tries to get with Louise (Sophie Cleary) who takes a shine to him but then dumps him when he's shown to have major anger issues. Despite being broke most of the time Eric, with his down-and-out friend Dougie (Matt Zeremes) and the unlawful inhabitance of an apartment, attempts to steal back Louise from a self-obsessed rival she's currently in love with. Had the potential to be a good little comedy but completely blows it with a final act which is so ridiculous that it completely sabotages all the good work that is done earlier in the film. Shame really...

No nudity in The Underdog's Tale but there's some videos from the movie available here.

Unfinished Sky

Strangely a remake of the 1998 Dutch movie De Poolse Bruid (The Polish Bride) also starring the female lead of that movie Monic Hendrickx. John is a Queensland farmer who even after six years is struggling with the death of his wife. One day a woman, Tahmeena (Monic Hendrickx) stumbles and collapses on his farm. John nurses her back to health while a couple of locals arrive looking for her, followed by the local cop Carl (David Field). Turns out she's an Afghan immigrant who's been sold into sex slavery and she's much wanted. John keeps her hidden and then goes about trying to find her husband who might be in Brisbane. Over time, John and Tahmeena form a bond which is about to be broken when they come to the aid of a fallen motorcyclist which exposes Tahmeena's whereabouts. Solid movie with two good lead performances and a fairly decent ending. Still can't get over how strange the existence of this movie is.

Brief nudity from Monic Hendrickx in three separate scenes, all while in the shower. There's also a deleted scene off the DVD with further brief nudity. I've remade the videos in better quality which are available below. You can find previous collages from Unfinished Sky here.

Monic Hendrickx in Unfinished Sky

16862kb 45sec 1280x720 (brief full frontal nudity but mostly breasts, in shower)

We're Here To Help (NZ)

Underdog comedy/drama based on a true story about a man David (Erik Thomson) who takes on the tax department after they overcharge him and he risks losing everything to right a wrong. Don't remember much about this one.

No nudity in We're Here To Help but there's a few videos of Miriama Smith from the movie available here.

West

Aggro drama set in suburban Sydney where two cousins, Pete (Khan Chittenden) and Jerry (Nathan Phillips), live in each other's pockets and do everything together. Jerry falls in love with Cheryl (Gillian Alexy) but Pete has a thing for her too and she knows it. Jerry's so into Cheryl he's given up being a drug dealer with Pete and gets a real job at a fast food joint. Then Pete falls foul of the police and local interests so he decides to join Jerry until the heat dies down but then he gets a chance with Cheryl and it sets off a series of events which will bring their friendship to the brink. OK movie, nothing you haven't seen before from an Australian movie particularly around this time but it does have some silly moments including a scene where Michael Dorman's character just walks straight onto the street and gets hit by a car.

Nudity from Gillian Alexy and Blazey Best. There's also a decent scene where Gillian is standing in the rain in a very soaked and clingy T-shirt.

As always there's a bunch of movies that had nothing to cap, quite a lot in this year including Houdini-based drama Death Defying Acts, 80s rugby league drama The Final Winter, prolific director Rolf de Heer's silent comedy Dr. Plonk, immigrant drama Lucky Miles, comedy about a radio contest to win a car Two Door Mansion, Afghan drama Son of a Lion, big croc movie Rogue, mumblecore drama Boxing Day, rural dramas September and Twin Rivers, violent thrillers Nailed, Severance Pay and Stolen Life, political comedy The Independent, telemovie The King, strange drama Streetsweeper, cop thriller Without Warrant and tech spy thriller Insecurity. Also the BoyTown companion piece BoyTown Confidential was never released and the drama This Kiss has a brief lesbian kiss but it's not worth capping.

There's also a bunch of New Zealand movies with nothing to cap including co-productions 30 Days of Night and Bridge to Terabithia, decent horror comedy Black Sheep, musical Men Shouldn't Sing, thrillers Five and When Night Falls and mumblecore drama .ON..

There's also a whole bunch of movies I haven't been able to find including Academy, Alma Mater High, Almost, Battle Therapy, Battle Therapy Too, Beautiful, The Course, Cross Life, Devil's Gateway, Flesh, Forgotten Memories, Hammer Bay, Lights Out, Liminal, On the Edge of Eden, Redemption 101, The Roaring Whispers, Taber Corn, Thursday's Fictions, To Speak, A Touch of Courage: The Enlightenment, The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark and Virtuous. I thought I had a copy of The Home Song Stories but I seem to have misplaced it so I'm looking for a new one. I've seen the portmanteau movie Little Deaths when it played for a week in cinemas in about 2010 but it's never been released on DVD. There was nudity in the movie, a couple of brief scenes but I only remember some reflected nudity from Natalie Carr who also has a decent nude scene in Bad Boy Bubby. I doubt that movie will see the light of day again sadly; it was lucky to get the release it did. But I will say that's strange it hasn't been released as it stars a number of notable local actors.

There's also the following New Zealand movies I was unable to find: Down By The Riverside, Pictures of You, Sophie's Joy and You Move You Die.

From now on in it's a safe bet that every year will probably end up having at least 3 updates. The first of the 2008 updates should be up on Sunday.

Australian/New Zealand movies: 2007 part 2

Again there's not a lot of nudity in the second part of the 2007 update but there is some good nudity in sex trafficking drama The Jammed and shitty American co-production Lords of the Underworld.

2007

Ghost Rider

First of the movies Nicolas Cage made in Melbourne. Haven't seen it since it was released but I remember it featuring quite a few recognisable Melbourne places. Plus it was directed by the guy who made Daredevil and apparently his heart wasn't in it. Hmm...

No nudity in Ghost Rider and not really much of anything but I made a collage of Jessica Napier from the movie which you can find here.

Good Luck with That

Low budget stunt-based action comedy from stuntman Igor Breakenback that is in the vein of Jackie Chan movies where a man is set a series of tasks to help save his kidnapped wife from some evil dude. Limited and amateurish but not without it's charm and a decent stunt or two plus a 70 minute run time helps.

No nudity in Good Luck with That but there's a few videos from the movie available here.

The Jammed

Sex trafficking drama about a group of young foreign women who come to Australia looking for work but are then forced into prostitution by a local gang. One such person is 'Crystal' (Emma Lung), who has escaped from her captors and is been interviewed by a customs official where she tells her story. Crystal came to Australia for cleaning work but is tricked into prostitution where she joins fellow victims Vanya (Saskia Burmeister) and Ruby (Sun Park) who are bussed around Melbourne to various illegal brothels. Meanwhile, Sunee (Amanda Ma) arrives in Australia looking for her daughter and gets the attention of small time journalist Ashley (Veronica Sywak) who is reluctant to help but is soon drawn into finding Sunee's daughter. Solid drama with an interesting story, some uneven performances but not a bad little movie that got a little bit of love locally after a self-funded cinema run was a hit.

Nudity from Emma Lung, Sun Park and some side-boob from Veronica Sywak.

Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board (NZ)

Disney teen movie about a snowboarding champion who goes to Hawaii for a wedding and decides to check out the local extreme sports that they have to offer. Or something... Mostly made in New Zealand.

No nudity in Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board but I've made a few videos from the movie which are available below.

Kissy Kissy (NZ)

Lengthy mumblecore drama about a group of people getting on with their lives after the production of a no budget movie collapses when a sex scene doesn't go to plan. Dave (Daniel Northcott) walks from the set and disappears with a friend Lee (Richard Whyte) for a trip to the South Island but there is some tension between the two of them. Director Geoff (Rob Jerram) tries to save the movie while he's 'not a relationship' with the very clingy Sally (Jean Copland) continues on unabated. Female lead Alison (Tania Nolan) is freaked out by how the sex scene played out and tries to move on with her more successful actor boyfriend Mark (James Ashcroft) but she's not coping. Cinematographer Jackie (Angela Green) is living with her sister Erin (Brooke Williams) who is starting to annoy her plus she's striking out with Craig (Luke Hawker) who seems aloof to her interest. Somehow this movie is over 130 minutes and feels every minute of it. There's some interesting moments throughout but a lot of mulling in between.

Brief nudity from Jean Copland. Videos from the movie are available below.

The Last Magic Show (NZ)

Light comedy about magician/escapologist Ronny Roman (writer/director Andy Conlan) but is basically unemployable because of his general weirdness. He is on the lookout for a new assistant after finding his previous assistant having sex with his rival. He spots Celestine (Jade Collins) and attempts to get her to be his assistant. Ronny gets a gig at a hospice but it turns out it's only to give drinks to the ailing patients, set up by a nurse Sarah (Georgie Hill) who he strikes up a friendship with plus he also becomes friends with one of the patients. Celestine eventually accepts his offer to be his assistant and this leads to the biggest gig of his life on live television. Hard-to-like movie mainly because of the incredibly mannered performance of the lead which drags the movie to a crawl. Then this dope just walks around all day in his magicians gear which is just ridiculous. Sadly not even the story is interesting and it's attempts at wackiness are incredibly banal.

Brief nudity from Julia Hyde.

The Last Great Snail Chase (NZ)

Wacky drama about the people who gravitate to the house where Alice (Jocelyn Christian) lives. She's struggling at the moment with a shitty job and her mother is in hospital about to die from cancer. Her boyfriend Julian (Timb Wilton) is in a band and starting to get on her nerves not helped by him selling his soul to one of the devil's minions leaving his shadow to fend for itself. Alice's sister Petulia (Rakaia Rose) has run away from her aunt and uncle and hangs around the house much to Alice's chagrin. Zoe (Abby Marment) is a wannabe anarchist who's stolen a camera to make the next Anarchist's Cookbook while housemate Greg (Brad McCormick) has decided to build a bomb to further his anarchy but finds it hard to do with no money. Also wannabe artist Josie (Sally Martin) is about to be sacked from her temp job but isn't too worried as she has a crush on a workmate. Weird things are happening around these people including whales walking the streets. No-one seems to be bothered by much. Strange movie, hard-to-describe as not a lot happens and it meanders all over the place into very odd areas. Most of the time it just feels like people living their lives without doing much of consequence. Even the title needs a bit of explanation. I don't know about this one...

No nudity in The Last Great Snail Chase but Jocelyn Christian is seen briefly in a bra just as she did in Event 16. A video is available below.

Let Me Not

Low budget romantic drama where a 16 year-old school girl Nina (Charlotte Rees) works as a stripper at night. One night an architect Alex (Rodger Corser) watches her at the strip club and then sees her once more when he is commissioned to do some work at her school. Alex becomes interested in Nina and they eventually fall for one another. But things start to dim between the two just as the school eisteddfod is about to happen, something that Nina hopes to win. Some have called it the worst Australian film ever but I tend to disagree only because there's enough in the central relationship to not be completely awful. Sure the movie is not good and very clunky despite a fairly decent cast (even the revered 'Bud' Tingwell turns up) and the central relationship is barely legal... what was I saying...

No nudity in Let Me Not but there's a number of sexy scenes featuring Charlotte Rees and you can find collages and videos from the movie here.

Lords of the Underworld

Barely Australian movie only because of the multi-hyphenate lead is Australian but the movie was made in Los Angeles. Violent drama about mob boss Rocky Basta (Dale C. Reeves) who has decided to make a move in the underworld and begins by assassinating a disloyal senator. Then he decides to bring back the gladiatorial sport of Illuma (basically basketball) to decide which gang has the power and recruits a team to win him his power who are to be overseen by the mysterious, other-worldly Slay (Bay Abbey) who also becomes his spiritual guide. Also a former fling Hari (Tanya Mayeux) comes to Rocky to help look for her missing daughter Jade (Jaimyse Haft) who also happens to be Rocky's daughter that he never knew of. Enough... Irredeemably awful movie, ugly for the sake of being ugly with one of the most ridiculous allusions to spirituality I've ever seen. Badly written and full of absolute mumbo-jumbo bullshit topped off the a ruthless mob boss going on a spiritual journey he's never earned. And just when it couldn't get any worse, the sad mime turns up and fuck this movie to the depths of hell. Ends with 20 minutes of the most boring basketball scenes you've ever scene. Just the most hateful piece of shit movie I've ever scene. Fuck this!

Nudity from Jaimyse Haft, Tanya Mayeux and Catherine Wreford. Videos from the movie are available below.

The Money Shot

1999 made, 2007 released low budget comedy about Carmen (Fiona Parker), who lives with her boyfriend Stuart (James Bridekirk) in a share house with two others, Vince (Jim Koutsoukos) and Tracy (Anna Den Hartog) and is finding it hard to get a job in the media industry. The housemates joke about making a porn movie but when Carmen hits rock bottom, she decides to give it a shot despite having no experience and no money. After going through a bunch of freaks, Carmen casts professional porn actor Garry (Peter Stefanou) who is perfect but is wary of these amateurs although he does give them advice that helps them on their way. The only woman to apply is a trans woman Cindy (Pamela), which Carmen is happy with but the others aren't but they eventually find Missy (Claudia Mitterer) and she promises to bring her friend Angel (Jo Stanley). On the day of filming, not everything goes to plan but you never know, they just might end up actually finishing it. Movie has a number of limitations but makes the most of them. The cast is likeable although most never worked again and the one working actor, Peter Stefanou, is a stand out in his role and gives it his all. The story is pretty old hat but at 75 minutes it breezes along with no fat and there's even a few laughs along the way and the ending is pretty amusing. One of the directors would go on to make the real sex movie The Band.

Sort-of nudity from Fiona Parker and Claudia Mitterer but it's mostly covered stuff.

Moonlight & Magic

Timothy Spanos strikes again with this campy comedy drama. Two misfits Rocky (Tim Burns) and Frank (Maxine Klibingaitis) (aka Moonlight & Magic) go on a crime spree around Belgrave doing everything from robbing cafés and op shops, stealing food, throwing eggs and attempting to pinch the nipples of women with tongs amongst many other things (one scene with a woman who had a mastectomy is absolutely baffling). They meet a bunch of characters along the way, most of them naked while an Indigenous man, also naked, looks over them. Their victims also talk incessantly about them. That's pretty much it. Plenty of attempts at campy humour definitely influenced by John Waters but nowhere near as entertaining as Waters' movies. Wanders all over the place and never all that coherent and forget the plot; it barely has one. Spanos's movies are definitely an acquired taste and I don't mind some of them but not this one. It's a rambling mess...

Brief nudity from Maxine Klibingaitis as she bathes.

Murder in the Outback
aka Joanne Lees: Murder in the Outback

Telemovie based on the horrific murder of English tourist Peter Falconio in the middle-of-nowhere while his girlfriend Joanne Lees (Joanne Froggatt) barely escaped. Turns out that Lees was not the 'perfect victim' and that she seemed like a cold person so doubts were made about her story although she was vehement in her accusation of Bradley Murdoch (Richard Carter) as the murderer. Anyway, Murdoch was found guilty and Falconio has still never been found despite that dodgy documentary's attempt a few years back. The movie feels hollow and underwritten as if there was still a legal case being played out so they can only go with the certain verified facts. Murdoch barely speaks at all. Tom Long and Asher Keddie have barely anything to do. I will say Froggatt is well cast as Lees. Very much feels like they went too early with this telemovie.

No nudity in Murder in the Outback but there's a bikini scene from Joanne Froggatt which you can find below.
